two feature articles in this issue have really preoccupied me. the first is Peter taylor’s account of swimming the Channel. true, he

was a decent swimmer as a teenager (“I used to be a 100m free and fly specialist – so just add another 21 miles to that!”) but he’d stopped by the time he was a student. Resuming at the age of 41, it took his latent competitive spirit and a monstrous determination to train

before and after work and at weekends to get in shape for the epic swim. It’s an inspiring and moving story (page 58).

the second article to make a profound impression on me is Chris Armishaw’s Race Across America (page 65). Five years ago this Sainsbury’s executive didn’t even own a bike, yet here he is mixing it with the best on a 2,990-mile non-stop ride across the USA. the fact that it didn’t go to plan yet Chris still made it from California to Washington makes his an even more extraordinary and uplifting achievement.

Both of those heroic efforts are completely in tune with the theme of our star letter this month. Mark Fuszard was watching a DVD of James Cracknell running the Marathon des Sables when he casually muttered, “I’d love to do that.” the instant riposte from his wife was, “Why don’t you?”

It is a question that resonates with all of us, I’m sure. Because for every inspiring story of an elite sportsman’s derring-do on ice climbs (page 50), in the southern oceans (page 73) and on deadly whitewater rapids (page 84), there are thousands of men and women with day jobs and families who fix on a goal beyond their capabilities, train for it and succeed. So what’s your goal, and how and when will you achieve it?

Happy Christmas, and enjoy the issue.
