ALL ABOUT MOBILE PLATFORMS
There are so many options when it comes to technology these days. Picking
a handset or tablet is confusing enough. But many customers actually look at
which operating system they prefer first — although increasingly, the two come
together, as is the case with iPhone iOS, BlackBerry® and Windows Phone, just
to name a few. Each phone and platform suits different tastes, and different
personalities. Are you the sensible Windows, or the fun-loving Android? The social
BlackBerry®, or the trendy iPhone? Whichever way you choose to stay in touch,
Altech Autopage Cellular will find the perfect fit for you.

WHILE EVERYONE GETS EXCITED ABOUT HANDSETS, OFTEN THE MOST
IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR PHONE EXPERIENCE COMES FROM
YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM. WHETHER YOU CHOOSE BLACKBERRY® OS,
WINDOWS PHONE, iOS OR ANDROID SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU
BlackBerry® users were once all about business,
but now the little black handset with a keyboard
is the social networking addict’s choice. You’re a
BlackBerry® addict if:
1./ Your whole life is on your phone.
2./ You like easy email and messaging access.
3./ You like keypads.
1./ You love music.
2./ You love design.
3./ You had one of the original iMacs.
1./ You’re independent.
2./ You can’t get enough apps.
3./ You’re a little green robot.
BLACKBERRY® OS iOS (iPHONE)
ANDROID
The trendy geek, iPhone users are always ahead
of the pack. They work in the media, or the film
industry, they like things to be put in one sleek,
usable package. You’re an Apple addict if:
The Android user likes things done their way. They
need a sense of freedom - they don’t want a cell
phone to limit what programmes they run, or how
the interface looks. You’re a customisation junkie if:
Windows has never really been considered the sexy
choice, although there’s a good chance that will
change thanks to its pairing with the Nokia Lumia.
You’re a sleek Windows worker bee if:
1./ You care about the latest technology.
2./ You like easy to use interfaces.
3./ You love square shapes.

THE
BLACKBERRYTYPE
BlackBerry® users just can’t stop socialising —
at least in the virtual sense. You can see them
from a mile away — they’re the ones constantly
typing away on that little keypad. But they’re also
a successful bunch. This is the traditional device
of the business user, so when they’re chatting,
they’re probably also talking to a client, checking
appointments, plus catching up on the latest gossip
via BBM, of course.

The iPhone user is easy to spot. They’re creative.
They’re trendy. They like to be ahead of the pack,
and look stylish while doing it. They also like choice.
Since iPhone pretty much started the whole
smartphone craze, they have one of the biggest
app libraries out there. Of course, iPhone restricts
its users from adapting to other programmes; but
then, if you’re an iPhone user, why would you want
to use anything other than Apple anyway?

WWW.AUTOPAGE.CO.ZACOVER STORY
The Android user likes to have things their own
way. They need flexibility and customisation, but
they don’t want to lose out on clean, lively design.
Android allows more control than other platforms,
plus easy integration - so your Android friend is
easy get along with. They’re individuals, but part
of the family. They like to have fun — the great
multimedia experience on Android means its users
are always entertaining, and always entertained.

Microsoft sorts have always been on the geeky
side of things, but since the new Windows platform
launched with the sleek Nokia Lumia, things are
changing. Windows Phone users love streamlining.
The Mango 7.5 version of Windows Phone is the

WITH OS SYSTEMS OFFERING LOTS OF SPECIALISED FEATURES, BOTH WINDOWS PHONE AND BLACKBERRY® HELP YOUR BUSINESS THRIVE ON THE GO
Corporate connectivity
If there is one form of technology that has shaped
modern business practices it’s smartphones. As
cloud computing, the use of VoIP for calls and
online documents are on the rise, smartphones
are increasingly becoming integral to the
corporate world when on the go.
BlackBerry® has remained the de facto choice
for many of the world’s biggest corporations, as
they are experts at streamlining connectivity
with work applications. This integrated approach
also creates better security. The BlackBerry®
enterprise server brings your business’ email
server together with your phone, while Mobile
Fusion lets users protect multiple devices from
a single web-based user interface to keep
everything centralised.
But as a new generation business platform,
Windows Phone offers an attractive
alternative. Windows brings the usability of
the Microsoft Office suite together seamlessly
with the mobile experience. With many
workplaces using Outlook, a Windows Phone
will easily connect with office email. Many
services can be directly managed by your IT
department. Microsoft also offers SharePoint
Mobile Workspace, which allows you to share
your Word and Excel documents easily.
Altech Autopage Cellular offers special
packages for both Windows and BlackBerry®
phones — contact your key account manager
today to find out what suits your business.

HTC ONE SERIES: X,S,V
After the big fuss over the Desire and the
Sensation, HTC has been a bit quiet. But it seems
they’ve just been working away behind the scenes
on engineering a new generation of Android
smartphones. HTC has unveiled the ONE series,
a group of phones that offer one of the most
seamless smartphone experiences out there. The
S is super thin, the X packs the most power, while
the V is the most compact. The screens are big and
processors too. What’s not to love?

SAMSUNG GALAXY POCKET
LG OPTIMUS L7
The Pocket is a small but powerful phone that can
actually fit in your pocket. This affordable phone
comes loaded with most Google apps, as well
as Samsung’s app store and features a bonus
Samsung Social Hub app that lets you consolidate
all your social accounts. Everything is fairly basic,
but you get to enjoy smartphone perks at a much
lower price.
This good value phone is a nice addition
to LG’s growing Optimus range. It’s a very
thin and light device. It was very quietly
launched, and being an LG, didn’t cause
much of a stir, but it’s actually a great mid-
range choice. It’s one of the few mid-range
phones to offer Ice Cream Sandwich, the
screen is made of Gorilla Glass and it even
has NFC capabilities.

NOKIA ASHA SERIES 303
Nokia’s Asha series takes many of the style and
functionality benefits of Nokia’s more upmarket
phones and simplifies them, creating good value
handsets that don’t skimp on features. The phone
offers both touch and type capacity, with a fat little
BlackBerry®-like body but a fast touch screen. It
comes with most apps built in, so it’s optimised to
be used right away, easy as pie.

SONY XPERIA U
You’re after a phone that’s fairly simple and
affordable, but looks the part. Then the Xperia U
is a nice choice. Sony’s trademark emphasis on
high-quality video and audio makes this a strong
multimedia device, with its stunning 3.5” Reality
Display making viewing razor-sharp. The body
design is super-sleek, so you won’t feel like you

SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 2 10.1 VS THE NEW IPAD
In the battle of Google versus Apple, there is no
more hotly contested field than that of the tablets.
Although Apple gets the most attention, Samsung’s
latest edition of the Galaxy 10.1”, the Tab 2, has a
lot to offer. The screen is bigger than the iPad’s,
and it offers more options for memory expansion.
The Android operating system is also more flexible,
but the smooth functioning of the iPad is hard to

argue with. The two tablets aren’t wildly different in
terms of design or size. iPad wins out in important
features such as battery life, display, sound and
camera quality, plus offers 4G technology. Even
with price, the iPad is cheaper — surprisingly it
starts at R4399, while the Galaxy starts at R7199.
The iPad seems like the clear winner, although it
really comes down to your favourite OS.

Imagine if you could look at your phone and it
knew what you wanted. Sound Sci-Fi? Not at
all. Today, we can talk to our phones and they talk
back. We look at our phones and they respond. The
possibilities of new ways to interact and accomplish
tasks through technology are increasingly rapidly.
Now, a new generation of phones and mobile
devices are making machine interaction more
instinctual than ever. One of the most important
ways technology is developing is in our attempts to
make communication more congruent with natural
human interaction. After years of using keyboards
to interact with our machines, the predominance of
touch technology is developing phone interaction in
a new direction.
Voice communication has also become especially
important recently. Apple’s Siri allows you to speak
to your iPhone as though it were another person.
Siri’s inspired some amusement, much devotion
and some frustration. Other phones have since
adopted voice recognition software. Not one to be
left behind, the Nokia Windows Phone has a voice
search function in the form of Bing’s Tellme. It can
GENERATIONTHE NEXT
translate foreign text, find the name of a song
playing or deciphering QR codes. There’s even a
feature called Image Matching for Newspapers,
which allows you to find a digital version of
whatever you happen to be reading.
One of the most innovative developments in
phone technology comes with the Samsung
Galaxy S III. The phone has voice, eye and
movement recognition functionality. It uses
Smart Stay, which keeps the screen on as long
as you’re looking at it. The movement feature
sensors can tell if you’re bringing the phone up
to your ear, and switches the phone into calling
mode automatically.
Another exciting new features in mobile
technology involves biometric security. The
new Motorola Atrix 4G uses fingerprint security,
which means you can only access your phone
using your fingerprints.
The future is upon us. With the rate at which
cellular phone technology is moving, prototype
technology is becoming a thing of the present
before it’s barely finished.
Today’s mobile technology is changing so rapidly, it has departed almost completely from the functionality of the humble telephone. Using your phone has become a hi-tech pursuit that encompasses a wide range of technologies that makes communication instinctual

Norah Jones has long been charming audiences
with her sultry voice and chilled out vibes, but
this new record marks a departure for the
songstress. Collaborating with producer Danger
Mouse, Jones’ latest album Little Broken Hearts
adapts to his laid-back, atmospheric additions.
The album follows the story of a crumbling
relationship. It still carries Jones’ trademark
sultry voice, but takes away the jazzy feel to
become more sonic and lush.
This book by Alan Knott-Craig, CEO of South
Africa’s leading social network, MXit, and
journalist Gus Silber, examines Africa’s mobile
revolution. The authors argue that cellular
phones have given South Africans power like
never before, and explores this idea through the
story of the creation and evolution of MXit. The
book looks at how communication has changed
the lives of everyday South Africans, connecting
us in ways we couldn’t have imagined.

From JJ Abrams, the producer of the hit TV
shows Alias and Fringe, comes this new sci-fi
mystery drama focusing on 300 inmates who
mysteriously vanished from San Francisco’s
Alcatraz prison in 1963. All 300 prisoners have
suddenly reappeared, and they haven’t aged a
day. FBI agent Emerson Hauser (played by Sam
Neil) is there to chase them down. Also stars
Jorge Garcia, aka Hurley, from Lost, who plays an
oddball writer assisting Hauser.
Madonna’s playing at film director again.
Examining a plot-line spinning off last
year’s academy-award winning film The
King’s Speech, W.E. follows the story of
Britain’s King Edward who gave up the
throne for the love of divorced American
socialite, Wallis Simpson. It interweaves
this tale with that of a modern-day
counterpart romance between a married
woman and a Russian security guard.

DATA BUNDLES CAN GREATLY AFFECT YOUR SMARTPHONE USAGE – BUT BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING
KNOW YOUR DATAIt can be easy to get carried away with apps on
your smartphone. There are so many fun ones
out there, it’s easy to get caught up in wanting to
try them all out. But apps aren’t free. And we’re
not talking about just the price of downloading.
Many apps can’t really function without using
the internet. And whenever you use the internet,
you’re using data.
One thing many people don’t realise is that many
programmes can be running behind the scenes
if you’re not careful. Streaming service apps will
eat your data - look out for GPS, push email and
app notifications. This is why it’s really important
to be sure that you have a good data bundle
and that you’re keeping track of your bills. In
general, the best rule is to use wifi whenever you
can, and be aware of what’s going on with your
phone. One great way to do this is through a data
monitoring app - try MyDataManager for Android
or DataMan for iPhone.
There are a lot of different options through Altech
Autopage Celullar, involving combined data and
voice bundles. Managing your bills and your data
usage is a good investment, letting you enjoy
using your smartphone as it was meant to be,
operating to its full capacity.
