A Moment of ReflectionAs the Chamber celebrates its 40th anniversary year, our executive director shares thoughts about a personal milestone.
for our organization. Its distinctive look also works well on social media and our website!
• Growth and retention. When I started, our membership was at around 550. We’re now at 630, with an unheard of retention rate of 87 percent. Thank you to our loyal members!
• Leadership! We’ve graduated 60 people in three sold-out years of Leadership Chesterfield, and a fourth class of 22 began at the inaugural Leadership Conference in September.
• Community involvement. We’ve also added the Family Fall Festival to our slate of community
activities. Plus, our events provide financial support to great organizations, including Wings of Hope, Assistance League, Stages St. Louis, the Alzheimer’s Association and the USO.
• Moving membership meetings. We now move our monthly General Membership Meetings to venues around the region to expose more businesses to our membership.
• Business education. We launched regular round-table business education programs to help businesses learn about topics ranging from social media to legal compliance issues.
• Focused Out & About. Finally, this edition starts our second year producing Out & About on our own. Our laser-focus on the local community has received good reviews, and the magazine now offers substantial value to our members.
It’s been a privilege to be part of the Chamber’s 40-year history for these past three. Now, onward!
Nora Macalady Amato is the executive director at the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Reach her at 636-532-3399 or email [email protected].
The coming year for the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce is big. Throughout 2016, we’ll celebrate 40 years of serving the business com-
munity. We’ve existed longer than the city of Chesterfield itself, and we’ve grown to become the largest chamber of commerce in St. Louis County.
That’s why we’ll spend a little time in every edition of Out & About reflecting on where our Chamber has come from and where we’re headed. This edition, for example, will take a look at the founding president of the Chamber, R.B. Clark, who is still an active member of the business community through Clark Financial Services, his financial planning firm.
We’ll also look at 40 business milestones that have influenced life in our community for businesses and residents over our 40-year history.
This anniversary year also gives me an opportunity to reflect as well. The passing of autumn saw the end of my third year as executive director, which, as a life-long resident of this community, has been a singular thrill for me.
I love getting out in the community, mingling and mixing with neighbors, meeting new businesses as they open and offering ways to help them as they establish themselves and grow—personally and professionally.
Our first Leadership Conference in September was an example of helping our community and living the Chamber’s newly adopted mission: Connect, Learn, Grow.
The Chamber also now offers the Women’s Initiative, in its third year, and the annual Economic Development Summit, with its third edition on Jan. 27.
Here are a few more highlights from the past three years.
• An app for that. Visit Google Play or the Apple Store to download our app and keep up with Chamber events, get emergency updates on news and weather, find special offers for Chamber members and more.
• New logo. We upgraded the Chesterfield Chamber’s logo to create a simple, iconic identity

The Power of Saying ‘Yes’Our new Chamber chairman shares her philosophy about networking — and how she’ll address questions about the community from business owners and residents.
One afternoon last fall, I took a few hours off to attend a poverty simulation at the O’Fallon Park Recreation Center in North St. Louis. I
said “yes” to the invitation, reminding myself about something I’ve learned over and over: I get more out of “yes” than out of “no.”
The effort was relatively small—a few hours away from work. But as a banker, I learned more about how banking affects people of low income. We want lenders to be empathetic to people who earn low to moderate incomes and need loans. I made some contacts I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
I learned long ago that people who just show up succeed more than people who don’t. It’s about saying “yes.” The only way I’ve ever gotten ahead is by saying “yes” to a networking event, to a coffee appointment, to a volunteer opportunity.
After years of volunteering with the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce—on casino night, the winter
festival, golf tournaments and the Connecting Chamber Women committee—I’ve now said “yes” to serving as the Chamber’s chairman for 2016.
In this role, I will continue networking, of course, but I hope to hear from Out & About readers through this column as well. As I am “out and about” in the community, people often ask questions about the city, the business community and the Chamber. I invite you to ask questions I can address here. I often hear questions such as:
What are the benefits of being in the Chamber? Membership opens frequent opportunities to network, through monthly coffees, lunches, after-hours events and more. I know many members who have used these opportunities to increase their business and grow personally. By the way: I’ve made some really good friends through my Chamber involvement.
My business is national, not local. Why should I belong to the Chamber? It never hurts to meet more people. You might meet someone who knows someone who can benefit you—and, more importantly, someone you can help. You get out of your comfort zone when you meet new people. The Chamber also offers leadership opportunities, which can really expand your horizons. As a leader, people come to you. They ask questions and they look to you for answers. It opens doors and creates more opportunities.
How can I be on a committee? Just ask! Chamber committees are always looking for help. Contribute early and often. You’ll get much more out of your membership. The minute I got on a committee, I knew it was the right decision. I immediately met six or seven people and felt the closeness and openness of working together on a project to achieve a common goal.
Do you have more questions? I hope so! Please email [email protected] to share them with me.
And remember to just say “yes.”
Tricia Whelan is chairman of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and a vice president at Lindell Bank, responsible for growing the bank’s loans and deposits. Contact her at 636-449-4000 or [email protected].

An Army of Snow-Fighters Chesterfield’s director of public services explains how he wages the war to keep city streets clear of ice and snow.
As winter approaches, the average Missourian begins to think about winter weather and the annual
treacherous travel that comes with the snow, ice and freezing temperatures. However, residents should receive some level of comfort knowing the extreme planning, preparation and supervision area municipalities employ for their winter snow-fighting efforts.
What was once considered a mundane reaction—simply plowing snow from the street—has become a pre-staged, proactive effort that requires municipal managers to have technological knowledge, considerable skill and a comprehensive understanding of the road network.
Chesterfield manages the St. Louis Area De-icing Salt Cooperative. Early each summer season, while most of you are thinking about opening the pool for summer, Chesterfield’s Department of Public Services queries 50 municipalities and six school districts to determine the quantity of de-icing salt they will need for the upcoming season.
We then bid, procure and coordinate the barge unloading, and the trucking of the salt to each of the participating municipalities prior to the winter season. Chesterfield typically coordinates the acquisition and delivery of 60,000 tons of salt each winter season for the 56 public agencies. Chesterfield itself typically consumes 4,500 to 6,000 tons of salt in a year.
While each storm is unique, we typically spray liquid calcium chloride on the de-icing salt as it is distributed onto the street. The liquid spray coats the salt, lowers the effective melting temperature, reduces salt consumption, and activates the chemical reaction, which initiates the melting process.
With de-icing chemicals ordered, the fleet maintenance staff tests, services, lubricates and checks each vehicle prior to the winter season. Thanks to special equipment aboard each vehicle, snow-fighting managers can view the location of each vehicle in real time, along with information about the plow and spreader status. That way,
managers can improve routing and other operational decisions.
We routinely deploy 24 snow-removal vehicles to keep 175 miles of city streets clear. Each season, the Chesterfield Department of Public Services conducts classroom and “on the road” training for all snow-fighting professionals. We divide the city into 10 specific snow routes with identified “primary” streets and a comprehensive sequentially planned route. Drivers train ahead of time on their routes.
Managers also use a sophisticated radio system to provide continuous communication with drivers, ensuring the uniform execution of snow-fighting strategies. Snow fighting efforts continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until the job is complete.
We must push snow to the curb to ensure that the full width of the roadway can be maintained through the entire winter season and through successive storms. If the snow and ice is not removed, the road narrows and it is virtually impossible to clear accumulated snow after it has re-frozen. Ultimately, not only can this be unsafe, but it also limits mail delivery.
Keeping Chesterfield streets safe and passable is one of the primary functions of the Department
of Public Services. It is a huge responsibility we embrace, and we pride ourselves on performing it. We expect to not only successfully combat each weather event, but to excel in that response.
Mike Geisel is director of public services for the city of Chesterfield.

The Spa Treatment for Your Pooch One of the newer businesses in the area, Dirty Dog Wash, wants your dog to feel like its his or her day to be pampered.
By Carlos Restrepo
At first glance, the inside of this small Chesterfield Valley business has all the telltale signs of a calming spa: warm colors of the walls,
rugged wooden indoor accents, a cozy atmosphere. It may make you want to jump in one of the five raised tubs, light some candles and grab a glass of wine.
But this is not a domain for humans. It’s Dirty Dog Wash, a place where dogs and other animals can get a one-of-a-kind bathing and grooming experience.
Dirty Dog Wash, near the corner of Long and Chesterfield Airport roads, is the brainchild of Justin Michael, who wanted to offer pet owners a different
kind of cleaning experience for their furry friends.“All you need is your dog. We provide everything
else,” Michael said. The store provides pet-cleaning services either by appointment, or as self-service, as well as grooming.
What sets Dirty Dog Wash apart from other similar businesses, Michael said, is the attention to detail, customer service and top-of-the-line care products.
“We really take a one-on-one approach to everything,” said Michael, who used to live in Orange County, Calif., where he worked in a similar venture. “We treat each dog like it’s their day to be pampered.”
Justin Michael, owner of Dirty Dog Wash, outside his Chesterfield Valley business.
January - March 2016 | Out & About 11
Although Dirty Dog Wash, which opened in October 2014, only takes dogs by appointment, owners are welcome to drop in with their pets for a self-service bath. “I was surprised to see how many pigs people have as pets,” Michael said.
“We really have created a space where dogs can come in and feel comfortable,” he said. “It has a much more of a homey feel than a sterile vet’s office.”
And customers seem to like that.“I can’t tell you how many of our customers take
a large chunk of our cards and hand them out to others,” Michael said. “It’s been beyond amazing to see the support this community has to help businesses grow.”
He said part of the key to Dirty Dog Wash’s success is the family-owned atmosphere and the philosophy of caring for pets as if they were their own.
“For 15 bucks you can come in, make the biggest mess you want and you don’t have to clean it up,” he said. “Our goal here is to create a lasting friendship and not just make a quick 15 dollars and send you on your way.”
Fifteen bucks is a small investment in man’s best friend, said Michael, who has five dogs, along with his sister.
“It is always your pet who sits by your side and loves you unconditionally,” said Michael. “If they love you unconditionally, you should do the same. They really are nothing but love, so you should try and show that love back.”
Justin Michael shows off one of the bathing stalls at his business, Dirty Dog Wash.

Physicians, nurses, specialists and support staff now working at Mercy’s Virtual Care Center, which opened in October at 15740 South Outer Forty Road. The team can provide care 24/7 over audio, video and data connections across Mercy’s facilities around the country. (See the April-June 2015 Out & About at the Chesterfield Chamber’s website for more details.)
Where Chesterfield ranked in Business Insider’s annual report in October, “The 50 best suburbs in America.” The website reported on our town’s “booming residential and business community” and our “two top-rated public-school districts, a top-50-rated hospital…and a household median income of $95,945.”
Dollars paid by Jefferson, Ind.-based American Commercial Lines to acquire Chesterfield’s AEP River Operations, which ships 45 million tons of products annually by inland barge. The company is moving to Indiana, with its 100 jobs, according to the St. Louis Business Journal’s story about the acquisition. See the July-September 2015 Out & About at the Chesterfield Chamber’s website for a feature on the company.

Failure IS an OptionBy Kurt Greenbaum That’s one of the unconventional lessons offered by a nurse, a teacher, an ice cream mogul and a “chief executive bear” at the Chamber’s first leadership conference.
One insisted she would only hold the kind of job “that women didn’t do.” Another created a summer job for his kids by buying an ice
cream truck.Add a nurse who became head of a Top 50 hospital
and a university management professor, and you’ve got the makings of “Return on Leadership,” the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce’s first leadership conference for the community.
About 100 guests spent a morning hearing invaluable leadership lessons from Maxine Clark, former “chief executive bear” and founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop; Jeri Schultz, executive director of graduate and professional studies at Fontbonne University; Kevin Meuret, founder of Low T St Louis; and Christine Candio, president and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital, which hosted the event on Sept. 17.
“I was a manager,” Candio told the crowd as she kicked off the event. “I grew into a leader.”
Candio, who just began her second year as St. Luke’s chief executive, started her career as a nurse, rising through the leadership ranks, gaining operations and executive experience in 30 years of health care work.
She set the stage for the conference by reminding guests that leaders set the vision for their teams, serving as cheerleaders and champions, but they also get out of the way so team members can do great work.
Remembering to be Fearless
For Maxine Clark, those were important lessons, but she also noted that leaders are willing to be unconventional. They hold onto the instincts that children have, without being childish.
“They are not afraid to speak their minds, or to do stupid things—until we teach them to be that way,” Clark said at the conference. She explained her leadership lessons through her life story, starting with her first-grade teacher, who awarded a red pencil each week to the student who made the most mistakes.
The award was meant to reinforce a simple idea: Mistakes are fine. Take chances. Try new things. Be inquisitive. Get involved and be engaged.

Later, she declared her intention to steer clear of any jobs that women traditionally held and started as an executive trainee in 1972 at Hecht Company, which merged with May Department Stores.
There, she realized buyers actually planned for mistakes. She used a red pencil to mark down merchandise that hadn’t sold—because it hadn’t caught on with customers for some reason.
By 1996, after a career at various retailers, rising through the ranks of leadership, Clark said she “was bored by shopping. My psychic bank was running on empty.
“I left corporate America to bring back the fun to retailing,” she said, and found her inspiration in the words of a 10-year-old friend. Commenting on the Beanie Baby craze underway at the time, the youngster said, “These are so easy. I bet we could make them.”
“That’s when the light bulb went off in my head,” Clark said.
Now, Build-A-Bear has sold more than 145 million stuffed animals to children in stores that Clark says teach imagination, creativity, self-expression, empowerment and friendship—all key ingredients to effective leadership.
Watching Your Kids Fail
Kevin Meuret couldn’t stand the thought of his six children being bored over the summer. So he found them a job. Or, more precisely, he created one.
“I’m the guy who snapped one day and bought his kids an ice cream truck,” said Meuret founder of Low T St. Louis clinics in the region. The Cone Heads truck, he said, was an exercise in getting closer to his family and passing along life lessons. He doesn’t run the business; his kids do.
“It’s so hard to watch your kids fail,” he said. There was the time the inventory melted, for example. Or the attempt one of them made to book a gig—at a weight-loss camp.
But three years into the business, the truck and its team has cleared thousands of dollars in profit, while learning independence, building the confidence to take things on, and the skill to bootstrap a business and make things happen.
A Willingness to Speak Up
Jeri Schultz, who teaches management and leadership at Fontbonne University, recalls one of her early encounters with Maxine Clark, at a board meeting with the CEO. Clark wanted ideas. Schultz was brand new. She wasn’t ready to chime in.
Clark wasn’t having it. She insisted Schultz speak up.
Schultz recalled it as a reminder that leaders are willing to be mavericks. “If everyone is compromising, people are afraid to speak up—and change will never happen,” Schultz said.
Leaders are also rainmakers. For the rainmaker, it’s about making sure a negotiation helps both parties get something. They structure their conversation in a way that says, “I’m not going to let you say no. I’m going to give you something that you want, so you can’t say no,” Schultz said. “And I’m going to try and make a little rain.”
Nora Amato, executive director of the Chamber, said the 2015 leadership conference was enough of a success that she plans to repeat it this year. She’ll be working up a fresh slate of speakers and—speaking of “rainmakers”—potential sponsorship from companies that have reached out since the first conference.
The conference shared exactly the skills Meuret has been trying to pass along to his children through the family’s ice cream truck.
“I need them to learn these skills,” Meuret said. “That means allowing them to fail.”
Kevin Meuret says an ice cream truck business helped teach his children leadership skills.

St. Luke’s Hospital: Leading Chesterfield’s Health Care Boom By Kurt Greenbaum
St. Luke’s Hospital continues Chesterfield’s health care explosion with a multi-million-dollar investment in new facilities within the city limits.
Chesterfield has found itself at Ground Zero in a regional explosion of health care services, and the city’s largest employer is leading the charge
with a multi-million-dollar investment in the area.St. Luke’s Hospital, the 150-year-old institution
that’s called Chesterfield home for four decades, has just opened another health care facility within the city limits, the St. Luke’s Urgent Care Center in the Chesterfield Valley.
Meanwhile, the hospital has begun work on a $40 million expansion on its main campus near Route 141 and Conway Road. A new five-story outpatient building, under construction on the west side of the campus, will create space for more physician offices and expanded outpatient services.
“Chesterfield and the surrounding communities combined are growing and thriving,” said Christine M. Candio, president and CEO of St. Luke’s. “St. Luke’s unwavering mission is to improve the health of the community.”
St. Luke’s latest expansion is its new urgent care center, which opened on Nov. 2 at 17421 Chesterfield Airport Road. The center is staffed with physicians and nurse practitioners available to treat sprains,

broken bones, eye injuries, cuts, rashes, burns, cold and flu symptoms and insect and animal bites.
The new location opened in a renovated building that used to house Villa Farotto, the Italian restaurant that operated for 11 years before closing in May. The urgent care center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., joining St. Luke’s seven other urgent care facilities in Creve Coeur, Ellisville, Fenton, Kirkwood, Ladue, O’Fallon and Weldon Spring.
“There are many factors that go into the planning,” Candio said. “The location of St. Luke’s Urgent Care-Chesterfield and the onsite physician office is convenient and easily accessible to many families and local businesses, including the regional sports complexes.”
The new center can provide services such as X-rays, pre-operative testing, sports physicals, workers’ compensation care and more. And it is adjacent to St. Luke’s newest physician office, where Rachel Dickerson, MD, provides primary care for adults and children.
At nearly the same moment Villa Farotto was closing, St. Luke’s was breaking ground on a new 106,000-square-foot building on the other side of Chesterfield. The new outpatient center will adjoin
the hospital’s existing outpatient center and is expected to be completed late this year.
With the new addition, the hospital will be able to offer expanded physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation services. The team plans to relocate its wound care center and hyperbaric medicine services from the main hospital to the new facility. And St. Luke’s Nutrition Wellness & Diabetes Center will expand by relocating there from St. Luke’s Resource Center.
The hospital launched a capital fund drive to support the funding needs of this expansion.
“In its 150-year history, St. Luke’s has grown from a single hospital location to an advanced network of care with more than 25 locations throughout St. Louis and St. Charles counties, many of which are located in Chesterfield,” Candio said. “Another way to look at this is that St. Luke’s is an independent health care system with one hospital.”
St. Luke’s expansion continues years of growth within Chesterfield. The hospital’s services in Chesterfield extend now from urgent care to women’s health services, from rehabilitation services to hospice care.
Meanwhile, the community has recently witnessed

growth from other health care providers inside or near Chesterfield, including Mercy’s $54 million virtual care center, which opened in October; and the expansion of Total Access Urgent Care in 2012; and St. Louis Children’s Hospital Specialty Care Center in Town and Country, which opened in June.
Candio said St. Luke’s stands out for its history of providing high quality, personalized care. To further its mission of improving the quality of life for its patients and the community, the hospital recently undertook a “community health needs assessment process” to gauge the needs of the community.
“We’ve taken a look at the most pressing health needs locally,” Candio said, noting that the hospital has expanded resources for three focus areas for West County residents: obesity and sedentary lifestyle; cancer screening and support services; and prevention of chronic conditions.
“St. Louis residents are fortunate to have access to excellent health care facilities,” Candio said. “St. Luke’s is nationally recognized for the quality of its care and consistently earns high patient satisfaction scores.”

With the 40th anniversary of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce at hand, we thought it would be a good time to look back at some
of the milestones, the people or the events that had some part in shaping the business community of the city. Here, in no particular order, are our highlights.
1 Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce (1976): The Chamber began long before its namesake city was incorporated. The Chamber has seen decades of growth, a few hurdles and countless milestones.
2 Incorporation of the city of Chesterfield (1988): The city failed to incorporate in a 1987 ballot measure. A year later, new boundaries were drawn and incorporation passed with more than 60 percent of votes.
40 People, Places and Things By Carlos Restrepo Some of the events, personalities or milestones that shaped the business community of Chesterfield over the past 40 years—or longer.
3 Construction of Chesterfield Mall (1976): The 1.3 million square foot mall is home to approximately 150 stores and is owned by CBL properties. It is one of the largest indoor malls in the area.
4 Flood of 1993: The Chesterfield Valley was one of the hardest hit areas after the Monarch Levee breached. On July 30, about 8 feet of water partially submerged streets and about 258 businesses in the Valley.
5Chesterfield Commons (1999): The mile-long Chesterfield Commons along Highway 40 continues to be one of the largest outdoor strip malls in the nation. Built by THF Realty, it covers 2.5 million square feet of retail space.
Miles and Miles of outlet malls (2013): Two more malls arrived. St. Louis Premium
Outlets and the Taubman Prestige Outlets, within a mile of each other,
would make this once-empty corridor of St. Louis County a larger retail
destination, collectively producing $150 million in sales in 2014. 6
The Taubman Prestige Outlets opened in 2013, along with St. Louis Premium
Outlets, in the Chesterfield Valley.

7Butterfly House (1998): The 8,000-square-foot Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is also home to the history Faust Family greenhouse. It opened as a nonprofit to raise awareness of the natural habitat of butterflies.
8 Daniel Boone Bridge Expansion (1989): The first bridge connecting St. Louis and St. Charles counties opened in 1935. As commuting increased, the Missouri Department of Transportation built a second bridge upstream.
9Spirit of St. Louis Airport (1965): It started with the vision of Paul D. Haglin, an aerospace engineer working for McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis, who saw a need for an alternative to Lambert.
10Louis S. Sachs: A son of Lithuanian and Russian immigrants, he is largely credited with the founding of “modern Chesterfield.” The company he founded owns 1 million square feet of office and retail space. He also promoted the development of landmarks such as Faust Park and Chesterfield’s Central Park.
11 Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex: The Chesterfield Commons open mall was not the only big attraction that marked the end of the ‘90s in Chesterfield. Almost directly across from the mall, on North Outer 40 Road, the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex is the largest park in the city.
12 Reinsurance Group of America Headquarters (2014): The company reaffirmed its commitment to the area by building a new, $150 million, 405,000-square-foot headquarters along I-64.
13 Chesterfield Business’s First Lady: Carol Joan Schmelig, Citizen of the Year in 2010, began her community involvement as secretary of the Chamber. She was Chamber president from 1982 until her death in 2011 from cancer.
14 Taste of St. Louis Moves (2014): The 10th edition of the festival moved from St. Louis to Central Park and the Amphitheater grounds—with wildly successful results in two consecutive years.
15Logan University (1972): The college’s first home was in Normandy in 1938, with only a class size of seven. The college moved to Chesterfield after purchasing the buildings owned by Maryknoll Seminary.
16Hardee’s Iceplex (1995): The ice hockey rink was first called the U.S. Ice Sports Complex when it opened in 1995. The 2,200-seat multi-purpose arena also went under the name Summit Center before the fast-food giant earned its sponsorship naming rights in 2008.
17STLVentureWorks-West County (1997): STLVentureWorks-West County is one of the region’s prime business incubators. The goal: Attract new businesses as part of the post-flood of ‘93 revitalization plan.
18Parkway School District (1954): Chesterfield’s second-largest employer was the result of a special election that consolidated three area-elementary school districts.
19Rockwood School District (1962): Chesterfield overlaps not one, but two of the state’s top school districts. In one form or another, Rockwood has been around since 1902, claiming its current name shortly after Lafayette High opened.
20 St. Luke’s Hospital (1974): The 493-bed community medical facility was originally founded in 1865 by a group of Episcopal Church leaders and physicians. Its move to its second location set it up to become Chesterfield’s largest employer.
Crowds roam the 2014 Taste of St. Louis festival near the Chesterfield Amphitheater grounds.

21Annie Gunn’s Smokehouse (1937): This Chesterfield culinary landmark first opened as the Chesterfield Mercantile Company. It has survived for more than 60 years, even after briefly closing after the Flood of ‘93.
22Rombach Farms (1943): Hundreds of families and children flock to this popular pumpkin patch each fall. Started in 1914 in Creve Coeur, the family bought the current 100-acre farm in Chesterfield and started planting pumpkins there in 1958.
23 Jewish Community Center (1996): The JCC has had many homes around the St. Louis area since its foundation in 1880 as the “Young Men’s Hebrew Association.”
24Chesterfield Young Professionals (2009): Offering networking and professional development to young business people in the area, the group has more than 120 members and holds social and networking events throughout the year.
26 Samuel Sachs Library Opens (2002): The St. Louis County Library opened its 20th branch near Burkhardt Place and Chesterfield Parkway. The library closed in December for renovation.
27Street Improvement Ballot Measures (1996): Residents passed a 1/2-cent capital improvement sales tax and a $30 million bond issue, resulting in the replacement of one-third of the city’s streets.
28Monsanto Opens in Chesterfield (1984): The company opens a Life Sciences Research Center. Later, Monsanto reacquired the property from Pfizer in 2010 and announced plans for a $400 million expansion in 2013.
29 Reconstruction of Monarch Levee: Reconstruction began soon after the flood, making way for massive development in the Chesterfield Valley. The levee protects 4,000 acres from the Missouri River.
Chesterfield Amphitheater (2011): The theater, with a
capacity for 2,000 spectators, has seen multiple performances
and festivals, including Taste of St. Louis and Bluesweek
Festival.25

30 The F4 Tornado (1967): A violent tornado devastated a 21-mile swath that originated near the Chesterfield Manor nursing home and moved across northeast St. Louis County.
31 Expansion of 141 (2009): That’s when it started. The $149 million project ended in 2012 with the completion of an “outer belt” from Ladue Road to the Maryland Heights Expressway.
32 Maryville University (1961): That’s the year the university, originally founded in 1872, dedicated its West County campus. Though in neighboring Town and Country, its influence is keenly felt in Chesterfield.
33 Dierbergs Corporate Headquarters (1999): With roots in Creve Coeur in 1854, Dierbergs had been headquartered in leased property in Chesterfield, but built a new four-story, $13 million HQ on Swingley Ridge Road.
34Old House in Hog Hollow (1859): The first home to be listed on the Chesterfield Historic Register, the building on Olive Boulevard became a shop for Americana-esque goods in 1978.
35Mike Herring: Since the city was incorporated in 1988, Herring was the first employee hired and has been the one and only city administrator ever since.
36Leadership Chesterfield (2002): For about a third of the Chamber’s history, it has operated a “leadership academy” cycling scores of enrollees through the components of running a community.
37Community Services & Economic Development Division: Created to coordinate the city’s economic development activities, it has played a role in driving substantial retail, recreational and hospitality growth throughout the city and the Valley in particular.
38Balaban’s (2009): The Central West End landmark closed in 2007, but reopened in a newly renovated, $1.5 million space at Baxter and Clarkson.
39 Monarch Fire Protection District (1957): Volunteer firefighters have served the Chesterfield area as early as 1925. Monarch, which began with three pieces of equipment, 12 volunteers and two engine houses, now serves 60,000 residents in West County.

One Man’s VisionBy Gerald Right
The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce grew out of the inspiration of one man whose roots are in banking: R.B. Clark.
Clark’s office at the bank. His secretary, Mary Batz, acted as the first Chesterfield Chamber secretary—ironic, because he hired Mary away from her position at the Webster Groves Chamber of Commerce, where she was chamber executive and had worked for many years. Mary had both the bank and Chesterfield Chamber phones on her desk.
After membership outgrew the bank boardroom, the Rev. Carlton Norton, pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ on Olive Street Road, hosted chamber meetings at his church hall, where the ladies of the church prepared a luncheon.
A couple of years later, when the membership outgrew the church’s facility, the luncheons moved to a restaurant owned by the Kekeris brothers on Highway 40, just east of what is now the Chesterfield Parkway East.
The Chamber chairman that year, Homer Mastorakas, ordered a martini. Clark reports that they had drinks at the luncheons back then and had a grand time. The Kekeris brothers, however, would not serve Mastorakas, apparently the result
An article in the Oct. 20, 1976, Press Journal (later the West County Journal) noted that, “A Ches-terfield Chamber of Commerce is now being
organized, as a result of the efforts of R. B. Clark III, president of the County Bank of Chesterfield.”
Clark had sent a letter to more than 200 area business leaders on Sept. 1, urging them to create a chamber to provide “a public forum where local problems may be discussed and where ideas pertinent to the ever-expanding Chesterfield business community may be freely exchanged.”
Clark’s banking career spanned 25 years. He came to Chesterfield in 1962 to work at the Chesterfield Bank. In 1972, he went to Webster Groves to serve as senior vice president of the Big Bend Bank. He returned to Chesterfield in 1976 to start the County Bank of Chesterfield, serving as chairman and president.
Many business owners responded positively to Clark’s letter, and the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce was officially established in 1976.
In its early days, the Chamber’s headquarters was

of a conflict between the Greeks. The impasse was solved when Rev. Norton (a non-drinker) purchased the martini for Mastorakas.
A couple of years later, the meetings moved to Chaucer’s Restaurant in what is now the Chesterfield Athletic Club (the Doubletree Hotel was not yet attached to the tennis club).
The Founder TransitionsClark left the banking business for a couple of
years to run a series of ice cream stores with co-owner Dick Hrabko (another Chamber president). He returned to banking when he opened a branch for Boatmen’s National Bank in 1985, serving as senior vice president for the bank’s central region.
In 1987, he co-founded the Bank of Chesterfield with Phil Melton. That year, he founded Clark Financial Services Group, a financial planning company based in Chesterfield.
Clark is a lifelong St. Louisan. He grew up in Glendale and attended Kirkwood public schools, graduating from Washington University in St. Louis in 1961.
He married Patricia O’Neill in 1960 and is the father of Beau Clark, Candy Friedman and Tara Smith. He is the grandfather of Jacqueline, Alex, Chloe Smith and Whittaker Friedman. His hobbies include swimming, biking, travel, sketching, skeet and trap shooting and
art projects with the grandchildren. Chesterfield now has more than 2,000 businesses
and more than 42,000 employees working in the community. The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce has been instrumental in establishing the city’s robust economy and steady commercial growth. It has grown to become the largest chamber in St. Louis County, with more than 600 members.
The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce is widely recognized as one of the best. We owe all that we have accomplished and become to R. B. Clark III, who had a vision in 1976 and followed through on that vision.

Showcasing Chesterfield Growth By Carlos Restrepo
In its third year, the Chamber’s economic development summit will highlight the city’s many assets to the business community.
In its third year, the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development summit hopes to both educate and inspire the business
community about the many assets within its boundaries.
The summit, scheduled for Jan. 27, from 7:30 a.m. to noon, at the Emerson Auditorium of St. Luke’s Hospital, features experts who will speak on the topics of business, infrastructure and workforce development.
Speakers will include experts from St. Louis Community College, St. Louis, Fontbonne and Maryville universities, as well as representatives from the
Chesterfield Mall, the city’s two outlet malls and St. Luke’s Hospital.
Boasting more than 2,000 businesses and more than 42,000 employees within city limits, there are plenty of people interested in learning about Chesterfield’s secret to attracting and maintaining both small and large businesses, said Nora Amato, executive director of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce.
“We have local business people, as well as some from other municipalities, who want to come and see what Chesterfield is
doing right,” Amato said. “There is a lot of interest from people who want to start or relocate their businesses here.”
Part of Chesterfield’s charm, Amato points out, is its ideal location and ability to “bring everything together in one place.”
“You can live work and play all in one place,” Amato said. “We have arts and culture and community things to do. We have great schools. We have thousands of businesses both large and small. It’s a great place to work and live.”
Recently, the financial services website Nerdwallet.com ranked Chesterfield among the top 10 best places to start a business, citing a more than $2 million average revenue per business. Some of the top employers include St. Luke’s Hospital, Reinsurance Group of America, the Parkway School District and Monsanto, each bringing in more than 1,000 employers. These names speak of Chesterfield’s versatility in its economic growth.
“I think Chesterfield is vibrant and welcoming,” Amato said. “We really embrace people who want to live here and work here and we really are a great fit. The summits shows others about the current business models and practices in this area and how they can be successful.”
Attendance at the summit is $50 for Chamber members, $60 for non-members. Visit the Chamber website for more information and to register: chesterfieldmochamber.com.

According to the National Institutes of Health MedlinePlus magazine, there are more than 400 bones and joints in our bodies,
and, when there’s damage to just one of our bones or joints, our entire body may feel the effects of pain or limited mobility.
If you have such effects, what do you do?
SIGNS YOU NEED TO SEE AN ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR
9 Signs: When to See an Orthopedic Surgeon
1 Instability when standing or walking
2 Difficulty doing daily activities, i.e. reaching, rising from a chair or walking up the stairs
3 Swollen, tender or stiff joints
4 Continued pain, swelling or bruising after an injury
5 Limited range of motion
6 Symptoms of degenerative disease
7 Physical therapy that did not eliminate pain or improve your condition
8 Second opinion when you are told you need a joint replacement
9 If your hospital refers you only to their specialists, that may not be what’s best for you. Instead, that may be what’s best for the hospital.
The sooner you respond to any of these signs, the sooner treatment can begin to improve your condition.
Why See an Orthopedic Surgeon?
An orthopedic surgeon has extensive experience specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic diseases, disorders and injuries of the upper and lower extremities. These doctors can play a critical role in your health by providing the right diagnosis and treatment at the right time to prevent further damage and quicker potential recovery.
Signature Medical Group doctors are national leaders in orthopedics. They treat adults and children with injuries, diseases and disorders of the musculoskeletal system – from minor to complex issues of the hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, foot, ankle, knee, hip and spine. Here, preventive education is key and surgery is a last resort. Instead, treatment may include pain management care and physical therapy.
Plus, our orthopedists are independent. This means they are not employed by a hospital. How does this benefit you? You’ll receive high quality care from respected doctors, more affordably, especially by being referred to less costly providers for tests and procedures.
And, instead of waiting in an ER for costly treatment, some of our orthopedic offices offer extended hours and Saturday walk-ins with no appointment necessary.
At Signature Medical Group, we believe we owe it to you, your family and your employees to offer a better choice in healthcare – one that’s high quality, more affordable and accessible.
To learn more or schedule your appointment, visit www.SignatureMedicalGroup.com.
