Welcome

Dear Readers,It is with heavy hearts

that we inform you thatJoanie Schmelig, ourleader and editor-in-chiefand President of theChesterfield Chamber ofCommerce, recently losther battle with breast can-cer and passed away aftera long illness. Joan wasone of the people respon-sible for starting the Out& About Magazine in 1996.She also had started orcontributed to many of the events that happenin Chesterfield. Some of her projects includedthe concert series in Faust Park, the annualPumpkin Run, and the Business to BusinessExpo. She alerted many of the Chesterfield resi-dents and businesses about the flood of 1993and rolled up her sleeves to help bringChesterfield Valley back into business.

She grew the Chesterfield Chamber fromabout 100 people from her basement office in1982 to more than 900 busineses with 1800members during her 30 years of service. Shedevoted her life to family, friends and makingChesterfield happen. In 2010 she was awardedthe ‘Chesterfield Citizen of the Year’ for hermany accomplishments. There was no one thatdeserved the award more than she did.

We will miss her immensely. We dedicate thisissue of Out & About to our dear Joanie- the‘First Lady’ of Chesterfield. Life at the Chamberwill not be the same without her driving force.

We also thank the contributing writers (vol-unteers, we might add) who workdiligently to bring you useful andentertaining information in eachissue of the Out & About.

Expert Advice: Car TalkTips for Filling Up at the Pump

• Buy gas on Wednesday. Gas prices are statisticallythe cheapest on Wednesdays, but isn’t always true.• Don't top up your tank between fills. It is wastedmoney and bad for the environment• Don't be brand conscious. Buy where you can getthe best deal. There's no significant difference.• Use the lowest required octane. This may depend onthe car but a good rule is if your engine does not “knock” on reg-ular, paying more for a higher octane rating is a waste.• Apply for a credit card which offers gas savings (but be careful ofinterest rates which may negate your gasoline savings)· • Buy gas three days before a holiday.

Expert Advice: Teeth Whitening

Your Plan For A Younger Smile!!

With age, one of the first things to go is the freshness of

your smile. At about thirty, tooth color begins to dim. And

if you smoke or overindulge in coffee or soda, darkening

can be dramatic. Exercise and low-fat foods count for less

if your smile gives you away! But just as our health habits

have improved, so has cosmetic dental technology. Now we

have the tools and techniques to perfect the color of your teeth.

Tooth-whitening systems take many forms. There are gels and solu-

tions accelerated by light; the laser is coming into use to “jump-start”

the whitening process. We can change color fast, or over time. In any

case, the result is visible in days and, with touch-ups, can last as long

as you do.By Dr. Amanda Darling • LegacyDentalOnline.com • 636-227-8400

Expert Advice: GolfingImprove Your Performance

Course management, or lack of it, costs golfers as manyshots per round as poorly played shots. To improve per-formance and lower scores learn to understand yourstrengths and weaknesses and play your high percentageshots rather than risky ones. Do you try to play difficultshots with little chance for success and then regret the

results?A key to help determine your definition of a high percentage shot- If

you hit 10 shots from a challenging position ask yourself-’would I play theshot successfully seven or more times’? If less than five of 10 you needto rethink your strategy. But you will lower scores quickly and eliminatesome of those blow-up holes by trying this strategy.

Travel time and distance areimportant.

Short stays, plan short air ordrive times. Include getting tothe door of your final destinationin your calculations.

Budgets: Add 10 - 20% towhatever you calculate. There’llalways be extras along the wayeven if you’re going all inclusive.

Hide cash in your wallet forthose vending machines thatdon’t take plastic cards or whensomeone says, “Sorry, cashonly.”

Take a day or two after the cer-emony before you go. Comedown off your adrenalin highfrom the celebration. You’ll needyour wits about you for securityand other challenges.

Going where the money is any-thing but US Currency? Pre-purchase at least some Euros orother currency in small denomi-nations for tips and extras.

Taking credit cards? Discoverand American Express may notwork where you want to shop oreat. Good idea to each take adifferent major credit card, justin case!

Driving abroad? Get anInternational Driver’s License.Don’t assume your credit cardcovers all CDW and Theft; readthe fine print.

Check out your mobile phone’svoice AND text charges forwhere you’re headed.Consider getting a special travelphone from a reliable source ifyou plan to “keep in touch”.

Check out the electric voltage:Travel prepared to “plug in” withthe right accessory(ies).

Pack once, unpack. Eliminate1/3. Pack again. Use what you pack to wear athome for the same length oftime you’ll be traveling. Get cre-ative: if everything in your suit-case can’t be combined, considerremoving it & adding somethingthat can!

Best Advice: Other people don’t really remem-ber what you wore two days agolike you do.Layering is the mantra of theexperienced traveler and so ishand washable.Leave room for a little bit of tan-gible memories in the way ofsouvenirs or must haves!

Journal!Honeymoons are special. Takeone someday even if you can’tbudget to go right away.

Pictures and videos are greatmemories but the moment inwords, even the challenges youmight face (blisters, driving incircles) are the memories you’llcherish as the days of your lifeturn into years.

Planning a wedding or anylarge party usually has itsups and downs. The downs

can bring you pretty far down ifyou let them. It’s important totake time to unwind and de-stress.Here are some ideas to get youstarted.

Exercise/Yoga Getting in a workout can do wonders

for your stress level. Exercise has beenproven to increase your body’s “feel-good”chemicals (called endorphins), giving yourmood a natural boost. For the optimumstress-reliever, try yoga. Most forms of yogaemphasize the breath which stimulates therelaxation response, the opposite of thefight-or-flight stress response that youmight be experiencing.

Massage/Spa PamperingPampering yourself can provide great

stress relief. Find a spa that offers a pack-age deal, sign up for treatments you love orbranch out to try something you neverhave before, and enjoy a day of total relax-ation. Massages are a great way to relievetension, for example. Please note, if you'venever had a facial before, book yourappointment two to three months beforeyour big event since you never know howyour skin will react, and the day of theevent is not the time to find out!

WellBridge Athletic Club & Spa (636)207-3000 998 Woods Mill Rd. Ballwin, MO 63011-5101

Budget tight? Create a spa environmentat home! Fill the bath with some therapeu-tic bath salts or oils, light a candle, turn onsome soothing music and relax. You’ll besoaking away that stress while moisturizingyour skin. Or give yourself a mini facial.Refreshing your skin isn’t just great foryour outside appearance but it’s great foryour state of mind as well. Cut up somecucumbers for your eyes, throw on a facialmask, then relax and feel the stress lift offyour shoulders.

Retail TherapyA little shopping can be a great stress

reliever, as long as your wallet can handleit!

Shopping can get your mind off yourplanning woes and give you a nice dose ofphysical activity to boot. Put on yourwalking shoes, head to your favorite malland peruse until your heart’s content!

There is something so magical about live theatre. Here are several of the hottest tickets in town!

Dramatic License Theatre:“Dirty Blonde” by Claudia ShearDates: Sept. 15 – Oct. 2 • Located in Chesterfield Mall, Upper level by Sears

For tickets, please call 636-220-7012 • dramaticlicenseproductions.org.

Before Lady Gaga, there was Mae West… Through theeyes of two adoring fans, Charlie, a shy archivist andtemp/actress Jo, this bio-comedy chronicles the earlyvaudeville to late movie career of the woman DickCavette called,“The Eighth Wonder of the World.”Witness the daring diva as a seductress, singer, play-wright, producer and star as she wriggles and sashaysher way through the 1920’s to the 70’s in a male-domi-nated industry to become one of the most imitated and beloved characters of all time. This play contains adult themes and language. Come up and see her beginning Sept. 15!

New Jewish Theatre:“End of Days” by Deborah Zoe LauferDates: Sept. 8-25 • 2 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis

For tickets, please call 314-442-3283 • newjewishtheatre.org

Laufer’s play is a wacky and off-balance tale that takes aim at science, religion, celebrityworship and suburbia. Set in 2003, just two years after9/11, sixteen-year-old Rachel Stein is having a bad year. Her father, suffering from post 9/11 depression, won'tleave the house or change out of his pajamas. Her moth-er, Sylvia, is a lapsed Jew who has become a devout bornagain Christian. Nelson, the nerdy sixteen-year- oldneighbor who dresses as Elvis, has a huge crush on her.The ensuing events of the play propel this dysfunctionalfamily on a journey of discovery that is a whirlwind of a family drama. The play ispoignantly redemptive and often hilariously funny, as it asks us what we would holdmost sacred if we knew the end was near. A satirically dark comedy with a moral edge,it is ultimately a story of family and faith, told with wacky hilarity.

Stages St. Louis:“Victor/Victoria”; Book by Blake EdwardsDates: Sept. 9-Oct. 9 • Kirkwood Community Center, 111 S. Geyer Road, Kirkwood

For tickets, please call 314-821-2407 • stagesstlouis.org

A woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman?! It’s a piece of cake forout-of-work soprano Victoria Grant in this hilarious, fun-filled romp through 1930’sParis.
