SUMMER HOLY

Thursdays

My Dear Friends,

Jesus calls Peter to walk on the water in today’s Gospel,

and, after a few steps, he begins to sink and he calls out

to Jesus to save him. Jesus’ response is, “O you of little

faith, why did you doubt?” That question is for all of us

as well. Why do we doubt? Why do we question whether

God could really save us or bless us? The very name

of Jesus means that God saves. Yet we doubt Jesus’

goodness and we doubt the teachings of the church, and

we doubt the teachings concerning the Blessed Mother.

of the Blessed Mother of God, whereby Mary was

Day of Obligation, it is a beautiful teaching concerning

our Blessed Mother. Jesus, who faithfully fulfilled every

commandment, fulfills the fourth commandment.

He honors his mother and father. He was present at the

death of St. Joseph, which legend has it was a happy

death for him because he was surrounded by Jesus and

Mary. For this reason, St. Joseph is the patron saint of a

happy death. Mary, herself, did not deem herself worthy

to avoid death, since her Son was going to experience

death, so some of the Church Fathers will teach that Mary

did die but then knew no corruption as she was glorified

by her Son by being assumed into heaven. Scott Hahn,

a brilliant Catholic Biblical scholar, says that the fourth

commandment of honoring one’s mother and father was

fulfilled perfectly by Jesus at the Assumption because

the Hebrew language of Exodus is such that honor and

glorify are very much related. Why would Jesus not

fulfill the fourth commandment by glorifying his mother

in heaven, she who was the first to hear the Word of God

and conceived him in her heart and in her womb?

Did not Mary provide Jesus with a human body, and did

she not nourish him with her body, while in the womb

we have some figures that also were brought to heaven,

even though they did not taste death, for example Elijah

the prophet and Enoch. If they were given this grace and

gift to be assumed into heaven before death, why is it so

difficult for people to accept that Jesus would bring his

mother into heaven at the moment of her death?

Our Catholic faith is so beautiful, yet we have lost these

beautiful teachings through the years and have forgotten

the good things God has done for us.

May our Beautiful Mother, the Mother of our Lord,

pray for us as we grow closer to our Lord present

in the Blessed Sacrament.

God Bless.

Fr. John

Like the saints, Mary is always present when we are

in Adoration. As the first and pre-eminent member of

the Body of Christ, the Blessed Mother is undoubtedly

present wherever her Son is—wherever there is Jesus,

there is Mary. Near our Eucharistic Lord, her ardent

love and fervent faith can inspire and guide our

hearts whenever we come into His Presence.

She can fortify our weakness and

teach us the compassionate gaze

that will bring glory and

consolation to her beloved Son.

The more we give ourselves

to her the more she is able to

form us into loving adorers

and humble consolers

of His Most Sacred Heart.

2017 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL

Thanks to the generous support of the donors, our archdiocesan family of faith can continue to enrich,

families, and communities throughout the Hartford, New Haven, and Litchfield counties. As donations continue to come in through the end of the year, this could be a banner year for the 2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal!

In the words of Saint John Paul the Great, “Jesus Christ identifies himself in some way with the least of his brothers who would be

able to say: I was hungry. In every era, Christian communities have endeavored to live at the service of the poor, of the starving!”

You can help area food banks feed the hungry in our community by donating a non-perishable

food item to our monthly food collections. Items such as PASTA, PASTA SAUCE,

RICE, TUNA, MAC & CHEESE, CANNED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, BEANS, JUICES, PEANUT BUTTER, JELLY and CEREAL may be left at St. Francis or St. Peter the weekend

of August 26th-27th Gift cards to area grocery stores are also greatly

appreciated. Many stores donate additional items when food banks make purchases with gift cards.

Thank you for your continued support!

importance of praying the rosary. With that message in our hearts, the
