Newport-ThetownNewport is a large village in Essex near Saffron Walden. The village’spopulation is just over 2,000, precisely 2,352. Located approximately 66kilometresnorthofLondon,thevillageissituatedamongstthearablefieldsofnorthern Essex.With a regular train service to London Liverpool Street andCambridgefromtheNewport(Essex)railwaystation,thevillageisconsideredtobewithincommutingdistanceofthecapitalandassuchattractsanumberof workers from the City of London. Joyce Frankland Academy, acomprehensiveco-educationalsecondaryschool,isalsolocatedinthevillage.Newport is the centre point of the long-distance path known as "TheHarcamlow Way", a figure-of-eight walk between Cambridge and Harlow.Consequently, ithasa largenumberofwalksradiatingfromitscentre;shortwalksofsurroundinginterestincludethoseheadingtowardsSaffronWalden,the English Heritage property of Audley End House, or Prior Hall Barn inWiddington.
The village prospered until around 1300, afterwhich it declined and itsmarket ceased.Untilthe20thcenturyNewportwasmostlydependentuponagricultureinadditiontolocaltradeofleather,woolcombingandmalting.Therearemanyattractiveoldbuildingsinthevillage,acharacteristicofthearea:-Thechurch,StMarytheVirgin,datesfromthelate14thcentury.-TheCrownHouse(mostlylate16thcentury)-MonksBarn,aWealdentypehousedatingfromthe15thcentury.In1588NewportFreeGrammarSchoolwasfoundedbyDameJoyceFrankland;thevillagealsohasitsownprimaryschool.Onthecreationofaturnpiketrustin1744themainroadwasgreatlyimproved.Onehundredyearsagoabout900people, largelyagriculturalworkers, lived insome220dwellings.By1971 thepopulationhad increasedsomewhat toover1,200.Since thenallthe livestock farms have closed, fields, orchards and farmpremises in the centre of thevillagehavebeenbuiltover,andmorethan2,200peoplenowoccupyover900houses.
Thevillagehastwopublichouses:theCoachandHorses,alarge17thcenturyinnsituatedatthenorthendofthevillage,andtheWhiteHorse,anequallyoldbutsmallerpubinthecentreofthevillage.Thereisalsoasocialmembersclub,theNewportClub.Newport ishometoa tennisclubandyouthorganisationsandbenefits fromtheVillageHall where activities include a farmers' market, bingo, keep fit, Pilates, the FootlightTheatre Dance School, Newport Amateur Theatrical Society, Newport Art Group, andSaffronWaldenIndoorCarpetBowlsClub.Newporthasavillagemagazine,NewportNews,whichispublishedtwiceayearandhostsabonfirenightfireworkdisplayon5Novembereachyear.Newport is servedbyahandfulof small businesses, suchasa small independentpetrolstationandgarage,achemist,an Indianrestaurant,aconveniencestoreandpostoffice.Thereisalsoasmallgardencentre,beautysalon,gentleman'shairdressersandabakery.

Compulsoryeducation Full-timeeducationiscompulsoryforallchildrenaged5to18,eitheratschoolorotherwise.The"leavingage"forcompulsoryeducationis18since2008. Theschoolyearbeginson1September(or1AugustifatermstartsinAugust)andendsthelastFridayofJune. TheCompulsorystagesofeducationarebrokenintoaFoundationStage(actuallycoveringthelastpartofoptionalandfirstpartofcompulsoryeducation),4KeyStages,andpost-16education.
Somechildren in Englandattendprivately run, fee-paying indipendent schools. Some schoolsofferscholarships for those with particular skills or aptitudes, or bursaries to allow students from lessfinancially well-off families to attend. Independent schools do not have to follow the NationalCurriculum.

Post-16educationStudentsatbothstateschoolsandindependentschoolstypicallytakeGCSEexaminations,whichmark the end of compulsory education in school. Above school-leaving age, theindependentandstatesectorsaresimilarlystructured.Inthe16–18agegroup,sixthformeducationisnotcompulsory,butmandatoryeducationortraininguntiltheageof18wasphasedinundertheEducationandSkillsAct2008,with16-year-oldsin2013andfor17-year-oldsinSeptember2015.
Apprenticeshipsandtraineeships TheNationalApprenticeshipServicehelpspeople16ormoreyearsofageenterapprenticeshipsinordertolearnaskilledtrade.ApprenticeshipsintheUKareofferedfrombasictrainingatsecondaryleveltoadvancedcoursesathighereducationlevel.Traineeships are also overseen by the National Apprenticeship Service, and are education and atrainingprogrammesthatarecombinedwithworkexperiencetogivetraineestheskillsneededtogetanapprenticeship. Apprenticeshipscomeinfourlevels:Intermediate,Advanced,HigherandDegree.
There is a large varietyofVocational educationandtraining(VET)qualificationsintheUK.VET is available at secondary and higher educationlevelsintheUK;mostVETqualificationsaretakenatsecondarylevelwithinthefurthereducationsector.Formal VET in the UK is organised within severalnationalqualificationsframeworks. ThenewRegulatedQualificationsFramework(RQF),decided in 2015, gives awarding organisationsincreased freedom and flexibility to developqualifications that meet specific labour marketneeds. Qualificationsarenowexpectedtobevalidatedandsupporteddirectlybyemployers. New level descriptors are being developed, but thesame eight framework levels (plus entry levels)remain from the previous Qualifications and CreditFramework(QCF).
Types of VET
EntrancerequirementsandfurtherstudyorworkpathwaysarementionedwithinthedescriptionofqualificationswithintheUKqualificationsregistersandotherformal qualifications. VETisavailableacrossmostlevelsofthequalificationsframeworksintheUK,rangingfrom introductoryinitialVETcoursesinsecondaryschoolsandcollegesthroughtoprogrammesathighereducationlevel.Itcanbefoundintheshapeofschool-basedprogrammeswhichcombinegeneralacademicstudywithvocationalelements,broadvocationalprogrammesand specialistoccupationalprogrammes. VET is offered on a full-time and part-time basis and studentsmay attend school or college on ablockreleaseorday-releasebasisfromemployers,orattendeveningorweekendlearningsessions.Moreover,alargenumberofqualificationsexistwithinthequalificationsframeworksintheUK,offeringabroadchoiceofprogrammes.
