I’M THINKING...

FINDING RESTI love going on vacation. It would probably be just as accurate to

simply say, I love vacation. I don’t really need to go anywhere ordo anything for vacation to be awesome. Then again, isn’t thatwhat makes a vacation a vacation? The whole idea of a vacation isthat we are vacating – escaping the business of daily living. Weleave behind the responsibilities and daily tasks that occupy ourtime, our energy, and our minds. I did a quick Google search andlearned that the word vacation actually comes from the Latin wordvacatio, which literally means to be unoccupied. Vacation is greatbecause it is a time when we are no longer occupied with the rou-tine of daily life in the real world. But really, who doesn’t love vacation? Further, who doesn’t need

to stop from time to time? Life is hard work and, given enoughtime, it will eventually kill you. The world moves at such a terrify-ingly fast pace it’s a miracle that any of us can keep doing it for anyperiod of time at all. Truly, it is only through the grace of God.Living life today often feels like we’ve tied ourselves to a sports carand are attempting to run alongside as it speeds down the high-way. Sure, the rope will allow us to keep up with the car, but therewill be very little running and a whole lot of dragging.

Please don’t mistake me. I love life and I love my job. I believeboth to be gifts from God. Many of you would agree. But it cer-tainly takes its toll on us from time to time. We begin to weardown. We get tired and we need to rest and recharge. So, we startlooking for ways to escape. In my case I catch myself staring outthe window dreaming about lakes, wakeboarding, campfires, andAnimal Planet’s Shark Week. I want to escape the craziness andfind rest.I think this is both natural and good. We are actually commanded

to rest. In the creation account in Genesis 2:2 we read that onceGod finished the act of creation “He rested from all His work.” InExodus 20:11 we read that God’s actions in Genesis 2 were toserve as an example for us. It wasn’t that God needed rest fromwhat occupied Him, but that we need rest from what occupies us.We need times in our life when we escape all the busyness andstop for a while. But our vacation… our time of being unoccu-pied… is not supposed to be permanent. It serves a purpose sothat we can go on serving ours. The times of vacation are to betimes that allow us to return to life renewed and ready for action.

I am so grateful that God didn’t stay on vacation after creation. He didn’t choose to stay indefinitely in a state of rest. Rather, Hegot back to work creating and recreating. As we read the Bible werealize that upon returning to work things only got crazier andharder. In the process His work did cost Him His life in the formof Jesus Christ. Come to think of it, even the grave didn’t stop Godfrom coming back to work. He could have escaped permanently.Instead, He got back about the business of life so that we mighthave life and share life with others. So, what’s my point? My point is this, I know life is hard. I know

that many of us find ourselves tired, worn thin, and wonderinghow we’re going to take that next step from time to time. Goahead, take a vacation and find some rest. In Matthew 11:28-30,Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, andI will give you rest.” But realize the rest is meant to renew you sothat you can reengage. There will come a day when our rest will beeternal, a day when we will no longer be occupied with the crazi-ness of this life. But as long as we draw breath, God has work forus to do. The good news is the same Jesus we run to when we needrest will run with us while we live life.

Grace and Peace,Dr. Jeremy S. Myers
