From the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

New School Values and Motto

Many thanks to the 150+ families that contributed to the review of our school values recently. Thanks also to our

staff and students for their important involvement in this process. School Council discussed the survey results at our

most recent meeting and I am pleased to announce that our ‘new’ values are:

Respect

Resilience

Responsibility

LOTE AWARD Phoebe B – 5/6 Daenke: Phoebe competed very well in the Education Perfect Language Championship to gain a

silver medal. Well done Phoebe!

HISTORY AWARD

Emre K – 5/6 Hartney: Emre’s positive attitude and high work ethic is always on display in Indigenous Studies.

He contributed well to his recent Powerpoint project and was confident with his class presentation. Emre is a

wonderful role-model for our school values of Friendliness, Personal Achievement, Respect and Responsibility.

Thankyou for all your effort and hard work Emre. Well done!

The SWPBS team will continue to work with staff, students and parents to document what these values will look

like at our school. They will be very important to the day-to-day operation of our school. These values will now

need to be updated as part of our newsletter, including our value tree awards.

I am very excited that our school will have a new motto ‘Spring Gully Primary School – Be Awesome’. This new

motto was inspired by the recent passing of Mr Stevens, our much loved teacher, colleague and friend. I know our

students will be very excited by this announcement, as they have been instrumental in reaching this decision. It is a

simple, yet powerful message that our students can relate to. I think it is perfect for our school!

NAPLAN Results

I have had a preliminary look at our school NAPLAN results and they are generally very good. In fact, an

Education Improvement Leader from the Department has recommended that a local school come and visit us to

discuss the outstanding growth our students have made in reading. This visit is likely to take place in the final week

of this term.

I will share our results with School Council before placing details in a future newsletter.

NAPLAN reports were sent home with Grade 3 & 5 students this afternoon. Please check their bag if you don’t

already have it.

Landscape Update

BLR Provincial Construction will begin the final stage of our capital works project on Monday. They were awarded

the tender to complete a number of landscape projects. I will provide some additional details of these projects soon.

State Soccer Finals

Best wishes to our boys competing in the School Sports of Victoria State Soccer Final tomorrow. They have done

incredibly well to reach this level of competition. Special thanks to Dennis Barnett for being our awesome coach.

Father’s Day Activity

Thanks to Parent Club for organising last week’s Father’s Day activity. We are very fortunate to have such a

dedicated group of parents who organise a range of activities to support our students.

I hope that our dads appreciated their lovely gifts and had an enjoyable day on Sunday.

Early School Dismissal End of Term

Term 3 will conclude at 2.30pm on Friday, 20th September. Please make appropriate arrangements for the safe

collection of your child/children due to the earlier dismissal time. There will be an assembly at 2.15pm and parents

are welcome to attend. Term 4 commences on Monday, 7th October.

School Bus The bus will be collecting the children an hour earlier on Friday, 20th September so parents can expect their child

to be dropped off at their bus stop an hour earlier than normal.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Did you know?

At the moment we are undergoing a major change to our behaviour strategies at SGPS. Staff, students and parents

are all involved in the process as we move towards our new positive behaviour focus. Behind the scenes we have

been revisiting our vision statement and our school values with the intention of restating our values in simpler,

more user friendly terms that all students can recognise and understand. Recently staff, parents and students were

surveyed about what they thought were the most important values for our students at SGPS. At the moment we are

collating the data and will soon be able to reveal the new SGPS value statements. Stay tuned!

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

Gender and Identity – Lesson 3 This week we took on Lesson 3 of Unit 7 ‘Gender and Identity’ in 1/2 Rodda/Orr. We read an inclusive gender story titled ‘Remi Loves to Dance.’ Followed on from ‘Aysha should be a cricket captain.’ The story was about a student who liked to dance and it made him feel excited and happy, but was told that he was a boy and boys can’t dance. As a class we discussed Remi’s problem and how we would feel if we were in the same situation. Grade 1/2RO responses were as follows: Eula- ‘People would feel frustrated if you weren’t allowed to play what you wanted to play.” Calvin- ‘You need to stand up for yourself and friends. Boys and Girls can play anything!’ Alexis- ‘Everyone has a choice what they would like to play.’ Sean- ‘It give’s everyone confidence when they play something they want to.’

Sunsmart Hats

Students at Spring Gully Primary School are required to wear a Sunsmart hat during recess, lunch, P.E, Sport and

any other outdoor activity.

The only acceptable hats at Spring Gully Primary School are plain green or black Sunsmart hats, consistent with

our Sunsmart Policy.

When choosing your hat, remember:

a hat should shade your face, head, ears and neck

a broad brimmed hat should have a brim of at least 7.5 cm

a bucket hat should have a deep crown, angled brim of at least 6 cm and sit low on the head

To best support our Sun Smart policy, please clearly and permanently label your child’s name on the inside of the

hat. Tracing ownership in a school of this size can be an impossible task if articles are not named. An identifying

sign is not sufficient to enable us to trace owners.

Children who do not have an appropriate hat will only be permitted to play in allocated shaded areas.

Michael Smith (Sunsmart Representative)

Active Travel News Spring is here! All of a sudden it’s gorgeous outside – and the number of bikes and scooters in the bike racks has

jumped up.

Mums, dads and carers, now is a good time to think about walking or riding with the kids. If you’ve been

hibernating all winter, the thought of ‘exercise’ can feel a little daunting. But a short walk to school with the kids is

the perfect way to ease yourself back in to being more active again. You’ll feel better – and it’s a lovely way to

spend time outdoors with the kids. Why not schedule in the Stanley stroll on days you aren’t rushing to after–school

activities?

Save time with the Stanley Stroll

Do you arrive early to school in the afternoon to find a car park? Did you know it takes just 10 minutes to walk to

school from Stanley Avenue? Park there and enjoy a relaxing stroll – savour some me-time or walk with a friend.

Walking back with the kids is special catch up time – if they’re not running ahead with their friends! Trust me, it is

so much nicer than battling traffic, and it means fewer cars around the school, which is better for everyone.

Footy Colours Day – Cancer Foundation - Friday, 20th September

It’s the Fight Cancer Foundation’s most important national fundraising event. Football is all

about spirit, strength, courage and the fight to win. Those touched by cancer need the same

qualities to win their fight against the disease. Wear your team’s scarf, beanie, socks etc and

make a gold coin donation to help support young people fighting cancer.

Repeat Notices Buildings Complete

Mr Parkes and I would like to thank our students, staff and parents for the remarkable patience shown during the

last 17 months of construction. We have been amazed by your support and understanding.

A summary of some important details are below:

- The main access to our school will be via the new stairs, leading up to the admin building. Families are

still welcome to enter the school via the Lower Oval.

- The new office will be open on Monday, however, please call or visit the office for urgent matters only as

Wendy and Judy will be spending a large part of this day moving/setting up.

- The end of the day collection point will be the school hub, from Monday. Parents can enter the school via

the main entrance and make their way up the steps towards the admin building to access this area. This

will be in place until the front of the school is completely finished. Students waiting for the bus or waiting

to be picked up must be in this supervised area from 3:15pm.

- Grades 3/4 Garmey, Crawford and Murphy will be teaching in their new classrooms from Monday

morning.

- The new Junior Building should no longer be used as a route to the school hub or any other classrooms.

- Grade 3-6 students will revert to using the new ‘senior toilets’ from Monday.

- Fairbrother will complete a few landscaping tasks at the front of the school during next week, so you will

still see some temporary fencing in place.
