Impossibly Easy Pumpkin-Pecan Pie1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) 1/2 cup Original Bisquick® mix 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup evaporated milk (from 12-oz can) 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 1/2 cups frozen (thawed) whipped topping 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 8 pecan halves, if desired

1.Heat oven to 350ºF. Spray 9-inch glass pie plate with cooking spray.2.In medium bowl, stir pumpkin, Bisquick mix, sugar, milk, butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice, the vanilla and eggs until blended. Stir in chopped pecans. Pour into pie plate.3.Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely, about 1 hour.4.Stir whipped topping and 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice. Garnish pie with topping and pecan halves. Store covered in refrigerator.

Baked Spinach Artichoke Dip1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 can (about 14 oz) artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped 1 box (9 oz) Green Giant® frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed to drain 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack or mozzarella cheese Toasted baguette slices or assorted crackers, if desired

1.Heat oven to 350ºF. Mix mayonnaise and Parmesan cheese. Stir in artichokes, spinach and bell pepper.2.Spoon mixture into 1-quart casserole. Sprinkle with Monterey Jack cheese.3.Cover and bake about 20 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve warm with baguette slices.

Pumpkin Swirl BrowniesFilling 1 package (3 oz) cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) 1 egg 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Brownies 1 box Betty Crocker® Premium Brownies Ultimate Fudge 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons water 1 egg 1.Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease bottom only of 9-inch square pan with shortening or cooking spray. In small bowl, beat all fi lling ingredients with electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Set aside.2.Make brownie batter as directed on box, using 1/4 cup oil, 2 tablespoons water and the egg. Spread 3/4 of the batter in pan. Spoon fi lling by tablespoonfuls evenly over batter. Spoon remaining brownie batter over fi lling. Butternut Squash Soup (Gluten Free)2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup) 1 3/4 cups Progresso® chicken broth (from 32-oz carton) 1 lb butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes 2 medium pears, peeled and sliced 1 teaspoon chopped fresh or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander 1 cup whipping cream 1 medium unpeeled pear, sliced 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1.Melt butter in Dutch oven over medium heat. Cook onion in butter, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in broth, squash, 2 sliced pears, thyme, salt, white pepper and coriander. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until squash is tender.2.Pour about half of the soup into food processor or blender. Cover and process until smooth; pour into another container. Repeat with remaining soup. Return soup to Dutch oven.3.Stir whipping cream into soup. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until hot (do not boil). Clinical Trial of New Medication for Feline Kidney Disease

Does your cat have kidney disease? Do you want to help in a research project to help suffering from this common health problem?

The Veterinary Specialty Center of the Hudson Valley in Wappingers Falls, NY (a bit south of Albany) is participating in a clinical study for a new drug to be used in the control of clinical signs associated with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in cats. The study is sponsored by a well recognized animal health company, who will use the data to help obtain FDA drug approval for this medication. They are looking for potential candidates to enroll in this study.

Potential candidates will undergo an initial evaluation including a physical exam. In addition, they will receive a full health screening which includes CBC, Serum Chemistry, Urinalysis and Urine Culture as well as IRIS staging. Four to fi ve additional brief visits will be required over the course of 8 weeks. Owners will be responsible for administering dose sachets mixed into wet food and monitoring their cat during the study.

Eligible candidates are cats at least 9 months of age and over 4.4 pounds body weight. There must be a diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), baseline serum creatnine between 1.6 and 5.0 mg/dL, a stable diet for at least 30 days prior to Visit 1, including some wet food, and stable fl uid therapy regimen, if necessary, for at least 14 days prior to Visit 1. Some other enrollment criteria exist. Costs for all study related lab work, visits and study medication will be covered by the company sponsoring the study and owners will receive fi nancial compensation (up to $150) for their participation.

To vax or not to vax...fl u is the question...Three years ago a local veterinary hospital decided to aggressively recommend the then new Canine Infl uenza Virus vaccine in preparation for an epidemic. This year a different local hospital has issued the same recommendation. So far, no epidemic. I’ve been watching. So, do you get your pet this year’s fl u vaccine? If you want a simple “yes/no”, you won’t get one from me. Some folks are aggressively proactive, and some are very relaxed. Neither is right. Or wrong, for that matter. Do you get the yearly fl u vaccine? Sure, many people do...we live in a swirl of pandemic almost yearly and strive for possible protection via the virologists best guess. They usually guess very well. Canine Infl uenza Virus is/was/can be, a big deal. Many dogs have suffered with the equivalent of our “really bad fl u”. Some have died. Not most. Quick care--fl uids and antibiotics usually work but it takes a while, can be expensive, and the dog is busy shedding the virus into the environment to infect others. One area expert told me he has seen very few cases, that they got better, and that the strain we may see if we are very unlucky is less virulent than in years past. And who ever expected an Infl uenza virus to mutate...and where will it mutate next? We’re doomed. I have spoken with several area/region experts and mixed feelings abound. To my knowledge we have never been in the throws of an outbreak of the virus. Certainly the indication for this vaccine is evident in affected endemic areas and yet we don’t seem to be in much of a “hot spot”. The CIV vaccine behaves much like the yearly fl u vaccine that we get, or the H1N1 vaccine for that matter--that is to say it does not in any way prevent the disease, but rather lessens the severity and stops the environmental viral shedding. Prevention of shedding is important, and I don’t wish to minimize the impact this would have on preventing widespread disease. The problem is, I have not seen any indication of CIV in my patients. Perhaps the cases I see are so mild as to be confused with the more common version of upper respiratory infection. The cases that respond quickly with oral meds and some TLC. I don’t tend to culture those cases--it’s expensive and the patient is often better by the time the culture comes back from the lab. One or two area veterinarians have/are recommending the vaccine for many/most of their patients and are requiring it for all boarding patients. We are not. We can get/administer the vaccine to your pet if it really makes sense--or things change. Right now we are watchfully waiting. I’m sure that’s not a real phrase but you probably get what I mean. I’ve practiced the same approach for the last 4 years. So far so good. It’s in my best interest to run a healthy practice. It’s in my best interest to avoid an outbreak in my kennel. I do better when my patients do better. Always. And, as always, I reserve the right to completely reverse my position! Annoying, right? Well, you know how life happens--someone drives/fl ies a few sick dogs into the area, spreads them around in foster homes, they all go to the dog parks/pet stores/vet hospitals, and in 8 weeks you’ve got a really big problem. It could happen. It’s not likely. I will be watching. If there is an obvious outbreak, my clients will be notifi ed immediately and a vaccine clinic inserted into our lobby. General notes to help your dog avoid the fl u. Any version of the fl u. Give them good food, good sleep, and good exercise. Don’t let sick dogs cough or get goo on you or your dog. If it happens, wash really well. See your vet regularly. Relax. If your dog is sick--call the vet (many can make arrangements for isolated exam rooms and no lobby wait). Again, feed your dog really good food--learn to cook for your pet (it’s not hard). General notes on vaccine strategy. Build good immunity early with thoughtful vaccination. Repeat. Core vaccines. Extras when appropriate. Back off when appropriate. Protect against likely or devastating challenges. I could go on and on. Call with questions and we’ll wade through this together. David Stone, DVM

Halloween is over.but did I have a great time. I was so lucky to attend Animal Fair’s Halloween Party for the benefi t of the New York Humane Society. Well, everyone knows that Bocker the Labradoodle just LOVES cats, so I went as a cat! I was dressed to resemble my “sister” Knicki, a tuxedo cat. Think I was the fi rst eighty pound cat ever. We were even fi lmed for the Real Housewives of New York. November makes us start thinking about the holidays. Well, I know that I have so much to be thankful for and that I am probably the luckiest doodle around. I am being featured in the holiday issue of “The American Dog Magazine,” which is on sale at Borders, Barnes and Noble and other stores. I am honored to share the spotlight with some other really terrifi c pooches who have their own stories to tell and all are doing more than their share to bring smiles wherever they go. So pick up a copy and enjoy!I heard that the theatrical version of “Eat Pray Love” will be out on DVD the end of the month and is supposed to include all the cut scenes; hopefully, including the family barbeque scene that I was in. Hold on to your hat for November. There are going to be some days during this month when you feel you like are doing nothing but either “putting out fi res” or “trying stop the leak that

could bring down the damn,” while at the same time trying to juggle three other things. What will

compound this hectic and somewhat stressful time is the fact that you will feel like you have

no help and you just can’t catch a break or your timing is totally off. Your saving grace is going to be “stick with what you know.” This isn’t the month to try that new recipe, or wear the new

shoes, or take the shorter route to somewhere: this month has that defi nite look of a time when

“what can go wrong, will,” so make your life easier in November and cut back on the stress

by going with what works, even if it is not exactly what you were planning. Trust me, if you just go with what you know during this month you won’t be bogged down and overwhelmed when those hectic days hit and you will have set yourself up to be in a better place, both emotionally and time

Picture this...You have a 13-year-old son with Autism. You spend a great deal of time caring for your child, and he is making progress every day. You go above and beyond to care for him. Each morning is a

struggle while you get him ready for school, make his breakfast, and pack his bag. Regardless, you do everything that you can to help him to be successful because he is your son. Then, you go to work. When you return home, it will be time for dinner, homework, and getting ready for bed. Your 10-year-old daughter is a great help at home. She washes dishes, folds the laundry, and helps to prepare dinner. She is doing okay in school. However, you notice that she becomes easily frustrated at home. Lately, she has been getting upset at her brother for little things. She thinks it is her Autistic brother who gets all the attention from you. What can you do to help this child? Where can a family in this situation turn?A support group for such siblings is “The Bus Stop Club” a FREE program for siblings (ages 7 to 15) of chronically ill, mentally disabled or physically handicapped children. It consists of monthly sessions held every month. These sessions allow siblings to share experiences, to ask questions, and to learn about the disease process that their brother or sister is experiencing. It also includes fun activities such as swimming, basketball, arts n’ crafts, as well as group trips to area sporting and community events. The monthly meetings take place at 5 local YMCAs in Guilderland, East Greenbush, Troy, Fulton County and Saratoga County.Meetings are staffed by volunteer Social Workers, Physicians, and other qualifi ed staff in an effort to enable these kids to express their feelings in a casual group setting. Siblings can play games, eat pizza, and just be kids. It allows children to learn from other children. It also allows them to see that they are not alone and that other kids may be struggling with the same issues and feelings. The YMCA environment allows them to have fun, experience new things, and build their self-esteem. The mission of the Bus Stop Club is to provide support to empower these siblings to cope with adverse life events they may face because they have a sibling with an illness or disability.

Respite Care What is it ?

Respite care is temporary relief from full time care giving. This can be from several hours a day in your own home to several days a week at an adult day program. Overnight stays at an assisted living or skilled nursing facility can range from several days to several weeks. Depending on your needs and the level of care your loved one requires will depend on what services are most appropriate for you.

If a caregiver has other obligations: business, pleasure or to take care of their own health needs then you may want to consider respite care. Respite allows the care giver time to themselves knowing their loved one is being well taken care of. This short break allows caregivers the break they need and deserve so they can come back refreshed and ready to resume the role of caregiver. This service ultimately allows the patient the ability to stay in their own home longer.

To determine the most appropriate level of care a PRI (Patient Review Instrument) must be done. Contact your local home care agency to schedule an appointment. PRIs are good for 90 days and can be submitted to several facilities for consideration.

If you or someone you know is looking for assistance in caring for a loved one you can contact your local department for the aging. They have numerous resources and contacts that can assist you in fi nding the help you need.

For the fourth year, Holy Spirit School is participating in the K.A.R.T. (Kids Are Runners Too!) Program, which includes a community 5K Run and one-mile fun run on November 13, 2010.

The KART Program is designed specifi cally for elementary and middle school students. The program is designed to motivate children to increase their commitment to physical activity at a time when a growing number of today’s youth are struggling with weight problems due, in part, to a sedentary lifestyle. The unique program design combines knowledge of proper nutrition and hydration with a walk/run program allowing the kids the opportunity to “help themselves while helping others.” Students learn the benefi ts of making healthy choices concerning exercise and diet.

The program provides children with an opportunity to participate in a 5-week program with a goal of running/walking a half marathon or 13.1 miles. In addition to each student completing the 13.1 miles they will seek sponsors to help raise money for the school’s athletic program. At the end of the program on November 13, Holy Spirit will host a 5K race, “The Rally to Run”.

Race Information

Registration is by 9 am day of the race. A 1 mile Kids ‘Fun Run’ will start at 9:30 am and the ‘Rally to Run’ 5K race will start at 10 am. The 5K race will be a loop track race that starts and ends at Holy Spirit School. 5K early registration is $25 for adults and $20 for students, including college students. Late Registration, which includes entries received after October 31, 2010, and includes day of race registration, is $30 for both adults and students. One-mile ‘Fun Run’ registration fee is $10, inclusive of race day registration. T-shirts will be given out on race day to those who pre-register. One-mile runners will receive an award at race completion.

Bess Heath is just seventeen as the book opens, leaving a prestigious private school never to return. Her father lost his job at the Niagara Power Company and the social status that accompanied it. Her life as it was is gone forever. No more fancy clothing, no more lavish family vacations, no more rides in her father’s expensive car. She helps with the cooking and household cleaning and joins her mother as a dressmaker to

help make ends meet. Bess’ older sister Isabelle is moody, depressed. She spends most of her time in her room refusing to talk and eat. Isabelle has a secret that she cannot disclose to anyone.

Tom Cole is a “river man.” He not only hears the river, but can feel when something will happen to the river. The river is in his blood, his being, his soul.

Tom and Bess begin to see each other, against the will of her family. They believe Tom to be beneath her. Will she listen to her family or follow her heart?

The time is1915, the dawn of hydroelectric power. Tom talks about the effects it will have on the Niagara raising issues about the environment which are still valid today. Is Tom a threat to progress?

The novel intertwines, romance, history and the power of nature. Parts are also loosely based on the history of Niagara river man, William Red Hill and other historical images and events.

The book portrays individuals, families, a community, and an environment imperiled by progress and the devastations of the Great War, The Day the Falls Stood Still beautifully evokes the wild wonder of its setting, a wonder that always overcomes any attempt to tame it. But at the same time, Buchanan’s tale never loses hold of the gripping emotions of Tom and Bess’s intimate drama. The result is a transporting novel that captures both the majesty of nature and the mystery of love.

I was planning on writing this month’s column in response to an inquiry that I got from a reader who had questions about criminal trials and procedure. That column will, however, have to wait for another day since I have news to report about recent changes to the divorce laws here in the State of New York. Just a few weeks ago (one day after Columbus Day to be exact) our newly adopted no fault divorce laws went into effect throughout the state. Until then, New York was the only state in the country who did not have a no-fault divorce statute in place.

So why is this such a major event? Under the previous laws, a divorce could only be granted if the party seeking the divorce could prove they had grounds to make such a request. In other words, if you wanted out of the marriage because your spouse was cheating on you, then you would have to raise your claim in your complaint and prove your allegations with suffi cient evidence at a trial. This always makes me think of the classic Roman Polanski movie “Chinatown”. If you’ve seen the fi lm (and if you haven’t , you should - it’s one of the best ever made) you know that Jack Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, a private detective who gets himself into hot water after being hired by a woman who wants him to take pictures of her husband and the woman he is having an affair with. The story takes place in the ‘30’s when such a thing as no-fault divorce didn’t exist so a private “I” like Mr. Gittes could make a terrifi c living taking pictures of philandering husbands and wives in the act.

As we progressed through the latter half of the 20th century, the idea of having to go through such steps to secure your freedom from an unhappy marriage took on an unseemly air and no-fault divorce became more and more the norm. No fault laws eliminate the need to supply anyone with such sordid proof which also put an end to having to air your dirty laundry in

the public forum of an open courtroom before a jury of your peers (Yikes!). It also made getting a divorce somewhat more affordable. Lawyers no longer had to hire a private investigator to ensure they would be able to make out their claims when a trial became necessary. Which also meant that lawyers fees for getting you divorced became more reasonable since a signifi cant part of what lawyers had to do for their clients was eliminated.

I started handling divorce cases while practicing in Pennsylvania which has been a no-fault divorce state for as long as I can remember. In PA, all you had to do was swear that you had lived separate and apart from your spouse for a certain amount of time and that was that. Which meant that the most diffi cult thing you had to do was divide up the marital property and fi nd a new place to live. Although PA law mandates that you have to wait two years from the time you fi le your complaint before you can get your fi nal divorce decree, if both parties agree to waive the mandatory time period, you can have your divorce fi nalized and be single again in just 6 months.

Pursuant to the current New York no-fault laws, your marriage can be dissolved if one of the parties verifi es under oath (via a notarized affi davit or statement) that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” and that it has been this way for 30 days or more. That’s it. This allows you to immediately focus on the important things like property division and alimony or spousal support. And, unfortunately, that’s about all I can tell you right now about the new laws. This statute is so new that no judges have had a chance to interpret it so there is no case law yet to be analyzed. That means I’ll likely be writing about this topic again in about 6 months to a year.

That should leave plenty of time to get to that criminal question that was sent in.

Veterans Day Event Planned at Melvin Roads

In celebration of Veterans Day 2010, Melvin Roads Post will once again sponsor an all-day buffet honoring

all veterans as well as those on active duty.

Veterans Day, November 11th, is a Thursday this year and at 12Noon a brief but solemn ceremony will be held in the Post Lounge. Following will be a buffet prepared by our Chef, Ed Ryan; it will be offered through 6:00pm. There is no cost and all veterans and their families are cordially invited to attend. This activity was held last year and over 100 persons dropped by during the course of the afternoon. There are several other Veterans Day observances scheduled; please see page four for

Dear 2 Kids Who Hate Show Offs,

I am sorry that a boy in your class is getting on your nerves because he shows off. Kids sometimes don‛t like it when other kids show off.

Lots of puppies show off too. My mom taught me that a puppy showing off is usually just trying to get your attention, and trying to make a friend.

Showing off to make a friend happens when children and puppies feel lonely, or left out. Puppies who feel left out try too hard to have friends. They think that for you to like them they have to be very brave, or very cool, or very smart. Often puppy show-offs are not being mean, they just want to get you to scratch them behind the ears.

So if you think of this child like I think of show off puppies then your job is to be patient with him. This is easy to say but not so easy to do. Take a break from him when you need to. It is OK to do that. When he is not showing off then you can say “It is nice to play with you when we get along. This was fun.” Let him know that just playing is fun.

You two can come and see me to help you more if you need to. Please let me know how it is going.

THE THANKSGIVING TREE OF GRATITUDE

Creating a tree of gratitude is an easy, fun way for kids and adults to recognize the spirit of Thanksgiving.

Materials:• A small tree branch from outside that has a few branches – *one that has already fallen to the ground• A can or pot• Florist Foam square• Fall colored foam from the craft store – you can get the type that is already in the shape of leaves or you can draw and cut out your own. You could also use construction paper if you cannot fi nd foam.• Dark markers to write• Yarn or thread or string.• hole puncher

Process:1. Put the branch into the foam which is then placed in the can or pot so it looks like it is growing. (This is the tree part.)2. Use cut out leaves or pre-made leaves and write down why you are thankful3. Use a hole puncher to create a hole in the leaf and string the thread through.4. Hang the leaves on the tree.5. As guests arrive give them a leaf and ask them to write why they are thankful on the leaf (and hang on tree).

Delegate – If one parent tries to do everything they will enjoy the holidays less. By sharing responsibilities everyone is more relaxed and happy.8. HAVE FUN – remember that laughter relieves stress for you and your kids! So don’t take all the baking, cleaning and shopping too seriously!

Holiday Art Fair will be on Nov. 6 - 7 from 10 - 4pm. Showcasing the work of over 20 regional artists you may fi nd that perfect gift for your holiday giving. No admission fee.

Theatre: Circle Theatre Players 30th year celebration will continue with an Original One Act Play Festival on Dec, 2, 3, 4, & 5 at 7pm.
