Crude oil prices have increased about 15 percent over the past year, which refl ects a trend in rising commodity prices across the board in 2011. Not surprisingly, this means that gasoline prices are also up, because crude oil is the single-largest factor in determining the price at the pump in the U.S.

The price for crude oil is set in worldwide markets where many buyers and sellers react to market fundamentals, including assessments of current and future supply and demand factors.

But just how much does the price of crude impact U.S. gasoline prices? Crude oil accounted for 71 percent of that price.

So what makes up the other 29 percent of gasoline prices? According to the Department of Energy, combined federal and state taxes on gasoline accounted for 14 percent of the average price. The remaining 15 percent of the price on average covers the costs of refi ning, transportation and marketing. The DOE chart right shows this average price breakdown.

There are very few consumer products whose price is driven so overwhelmingly by the price of the commodity behind it. Consumers see this correlation everyday on gas station signs that display the fl uctuating price of gasoline.

Neighbors Next DoorNeighbors Next Door

“Life is what you make of it.” And so began my conversation with Jennifer Gallagher, a Delmar native and mother of two. She grew up here, went to the Bethlehem schools and then SUNY Potsdam. It was always a dream, that the west coast would be her place. But the draw of her family, and the appeal of community drew her back to where she’d started. And here she stayed. Jennifer married Jim Gallagher in 2000 and their son PJ was born in 2002. It was during the 19th week of her second pregnancy, that the Gallaghers learned their baby would be born with Spina Bifi da. It was devastating, for both of them. The couple was at once scared and confused. Immediately their doctor pointed them in the direction of the MOMS (Management of Myelomeningocele Study) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Being both a healthy mother and a strong baby, they were perfect candidates for the in utero surgery. Their hope was that the spinal defect could be lessened through the surgery. The Gallaghers suffered another blow when they learned they weren’t chosen for the in utero procedure. Still, Jennifer says, “we continued to participate with the study, because they were learning so much about Spina Bifi da and were a great source of information and education for us, not to mention offering world-renowned medical care.”They had put a lot of hope into getting the surgery. It was something the Gallaghers wanted very badly for their baby. The next fi ve months were very hard, as they were unsure of what the future would bring.

It was during this time that Jennifer turned to her belief in God for comfort. She hadn’t relied on her faith for some time. She felt there was no one else who could help her or her baby during the long fi ve months of waiting. It was there that she found peace. She says of her faith, “I knew that God loved my baby no matter what, and so would I.”Madeline Hope Gallagher was born on January 6, 2005 by planned cesarean section. The couple chose the Epiphany for her birthday. It’s the day that Christians celebrate the gifts brought to the baby Jesus. And what better way to see her birth than as a gift? The cesarean was planned at 37 1/2 weeks, intentionally early. Her already damaged spine could have sustained further trauma from traveling through the birth canal. Thankfully, the birth went well. She was born beautiful and healthy. Madeline’s undeveloped spinal cord will be with her always. But so will her wit, her cleverness and strength. She has the face of an angel. One of those faces that

you remember as being the most beautiful you’ve seen on a child, anywhere. And then, her personality. She has charm and charisma. There’s lots of life in her little body. Six years later, the results from that MOMS study were recently published. The New York Times picked up the story and made mention of how well the children were doing who did have the in utero surgery. It was frustrating for Jennifer and Jim to hear this news. There wasn’t any information given about what life can be like for the kids who didn’t have the surgery. She said, “ I felt like the whole picture of Spina Bifi da wasn’t being painted and if there is something that can give prospective parents hope, like the story of Maddie and how well she is doing, it could help relieve a lot of fear for people who cannot have the surgery.” This comes back to what she said when we fi rst sat down to talk. The thing about life being what you make of it. The Gallaghers have taken everything they’ve learned about Maddie and about Spina Bifi da, and tried to turn it into hope. They both volunteer for the Spina Bifi da Association, as board members and are tireless fundraisers and cheerleaders. Through the Association, they’ve met many other adults and children with Spina Bifi da. For their son PJ, being around other specially-abled people has been good. In his fi rst year in elementary school, he was placed in an integrated classroom. The thing was, PJ didn’t see anything different in any of those kids. He befriended all of them. Parents approached Jen, grateful that their children had made a friend. She knew that it was another one of God’s ways, showing them the positive of having Madeline in their lives. When Jennifer was in the hospital, a friend sent her a poem titled Welcome To Holland, by Emily Perl Kingsley.

It’s an especially important poem for parents of specially-abled children. The poem describes a person who has dreamed of traveling to Italy, and is fi nally on a plane, heading there. Only, this person discovers the plane is not going to Italy - it’s going to Holland, and has landed there. It hadn’t gone to a terrible place, just a different one. And so the traveler must learn to love Holland, all the while hearing from other travelers about how wonderful Italy is, but knowing that destination is out of the question. The message sustained them through their fi rst year with Maddie. It was the hardest year by far. Now, when Jen dreams of the future she imagines how her children will grow up and be in the world. She still has hope. Hope that both Maddie and PJ will have open minds. Be giving, caring and empathetic. Throughout our entire time talking, Madeline Gallagher sat, smoothie in hand, listening to our conversation, occasionally piping up, but mostly listening, her big brown eyes alert and taking it all in. It was time to hear from her, after all that patient waiting. She loved talking about herself (who doesn’t?) I learned that her favorite singer is Taylor Swift. The song is Love Story. And on cue, she sang it for us, clear and from the heart. She also has big plans for the future. She’s going to be a pediatrician. We watched her sing, two mothers, smiling and nodding, loving the spirit and courage in this little girl. It was then that Jen commented on how, really, there is nothing that Madeline Gallagher cannot do. This made Maddie stop.

“Of course there is something I cannot do, Mommy!” she looked at us seriously.We waited. “I cannot fl y,” she announced. With all the love and hope and tenacity she has, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen.

A side note: Jennifer and Jim Gallagher have asked if our community would kindly say a prayer for their friend, Jennifer Lasher Tinsmon and her family. They greatly appreciate all the love and prayers that go out for her at this time.

Seasonal Allergies: How to Identify and Treat Them?

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? If you do, you are not alone. Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever, is the most common allergic condition. An estimated 35 million Americans are affected by seasonal allergies. Fortunately, managing seasonal allergies is not diffi cult. With proper identifi cation, prevention, and available over-the-counter treatments, allergic symptoms can be minimized.

Are my symptoms due to allergies?Sneezing, congestion, runny nose, cough due to post-nasal drip, and watery/itchy eyes are the most common symptoms of seasonal allergies. These symptoms are similar to those caused by the common cold and may be diffi cult do distinguish. However, a cold, which is caused by a virus, may involve low-grade fevers and thick, yellowish nasal discharge. Seasonal allergies usually involve thin, clear, watery discharge and no fever. While allergy and cold symptoms are similar, if your symptoms last longer than two weeks, they may be due to allergies.

What am I allergic to?Seasonal allergies are caused by substances in the air, called allergens. People most commonly experience seasonal allergic rhinitis during the spring, summer, and fall.

Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds are the most common airborne allergen. The type of pollen that you may be allergic to depends on what time of year your allergic symptoms occur. If you experience symptoms in the spring you may be allergic to tree pollen. Grass pollen is common during the summer. Allergies during the late summer and early fall are often due to weeds such as ragweed.

Molds are another common cause of seasonal allergies. Unlike pollens, molds do not have a specifi c season in which their likelihood of triggering allergic symptoms is highest. Indoors, molds can be found in damp areas such as bathrooms or basements. Outdoors, molds are found in grass and leaf piles, mulch, under rotting logs, and in compost piles. Allergies triggered by mold spores typically peak during hot, humid, and rainy weather.

How can I treat my allergic symptoms?Many medications used to treat seasonal allergies are available over-the-counter. Antihistamines are the most common medication used to treat allergic symptoms. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine, which is an infl ammatory chemical that is released during an allergic response. By blocking histamine, these medications reduce runny nose, itchiness, and watery eyes. There are two classes of antihistamines available over-the-counter. First generation antihistamines (for example diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine) work well, however, commonly cause drowsiness. Second generation antihistamines ( for example loratadine and Cetirizine) available

over-the-counter are less likely to cause sedation. All of the fi rst and second generation antihistamines that are over-the-counter have generic equivalents available. Other second generation antihistamines are available with a prescription from your doctor.

Decongestants can be used to treat the nasal congestion or “stuffy nose” that can occur with allergies. Two decongestants available without a prescription are pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) and phenylephrine (Sudafed PE). Decongestants may not everyone so read the label for warnings and if you have heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, glaucoma, or prostate problems talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking a them.

A nasal spray, cromolyn, is sold over-the-counter to prevent or treat nasal symptoms due to allergies. This medication also decreases the allergic reaction and can take a few days before your symptoms are relieved. Although nasal spray decongestants are available over-the-counter to treat nasal stuffi ness, they should not be used for more than three consecutive days. If used for longer, the decongestant nasal sprays can cause rebound congestion, in which your congestion may become worse when you stop using the products. Other nasal sprays which work well to manage seasonal allergies are available with a prescription from your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the best way to control your symptoms considering the benefi ts, side effects and costs of all the options.

Besides Medication, How else can I control my allergies? Preventing exposure to the allergen is the best way to minimize allergic symptoms. Paying attention to mold and pollen counts found

on weather reports can help to anticipate when you may be at highest risk of experiencing your allergic symptoms

and help you to prepare for those times. Simple things such as closing the windows in your house

when pollen counts are high may help to reduce exposure to pollen. Turning on a dehumidifi er in your house during hot and humid weather may help to prevent allergic symptoms triggered by mold.

What if my allergies are left untreated?If allergies are left untreated, it is possible to develop conditions such as sinusitis also known as a sinus infection. A sinus infection can occur when nasal congestion is left untreated which can promote a favorable environment for bacteria to grow. In addition,

patients who have asthma may have increased wheezing and trouble breathing during the

allergy season and may benefi t from treating allergy symptoms to ultimately prevent an asthma

exacerbation.

Celebrate the Women

in Your LifeThe Month of March is Women’s History Month. This year, the Women’s National History Project is honoring the diverse accomplishments of women throughout history with the theme “Our History is Our Strength.” As we refl ect on the theme of the month, we can all appreciate the triumphs and bravery of women in history like activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, aviator Amelia Earhart, astronaut Sally Ride, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

It is not just these exceptional women, however, who deserve our admiration this month. All too often, we forget the everyday achievements of the women in our lives, including our seniors. Women who surround us each day have led truly amazing and inspiring lives, and we should take greater advantage of their hard-earned wisdom and lessons.

The current generation of seniors have struggled and persevered through some of America’s most diffi cult times, but have rose to every occasion. The women of this generation can be heralded as everyday heroes, providing support, love, and care to their families and friends in both happy and hard times.

Many of these remarkable women live here at Delmar Place and resident Audrey Madison is one great example. Audrey, a resident of Delmar since 1945, has a smile on her face and pep in her step each day. An avid Yankee fan who loves to walk and bowl, this 93-year old

resident lives life to the fullest. In talking with Audrey and her family, it is clear she downplays her exceptional role as a mother. When Audrey and her fi rst husband, Fred Kass, fi rst moved to Delmar following WWII, they had only one child, a son nicknamed Fritz, a successful now-retired Navy Captain who Audrey jokes is her only “homemade” child, soon found himself the middle child with two new sisters. When her son was 9 years old, Audrey adopted a baby girl, now Carolyn Kaufman, who lives in Glenmont and frequently visits with Mom at Delmar Place. Only weeks later, Audrey also welcomed a 14 year old young lady, now Mary Wassung, into her home. Mary’s parents, close friends of Audrey’s, had died of cancer and Mary chose to join Audrey’s caring family. “When I got the girls, we were having work done on the house” Audrey remembers. “The contractor asked me, “where the heck are you getting all of them?” Audrey and her husband welcomed the children into their home with open arms and all three cannot say enough about what a wonderful mother and caregiver she has been to them over the years. After the death of Fred Kass, Audrey remarried Sam Madison, and became a loving mother to two more children, Robyn and Doug. Today, Audrey proudly displays images of her 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren in her apartment and eagerly shares them with her visitors. You only need to meet one of Audrey’s family members to learn what an extraordinary wife, mother, and caregiver Audrey has been to so many.

Certainly, woman like Audrey exemplify the strength that defi nes women’s history. During this month, we urge each of you to celebrate the wonderful women in your life, especially our seniors. If you would like to meet some outstanding seniors in our community, visitors are always welcome at Delmar Place!

A: Vacation is just around the corner, but before your family departs, consider a few things to prepare your pets for your trip. Whether you are planning on traveling with your pets or having them kenneled, plan ahead to make sure your pet will be taken care of during your trip. There are many options available for your pet: traveling with the family, staying with a friend, boarding at a kennel or cattery, or hiring the services of a pet-sitter. Here are a few things to take into account for each option:

Taking your pet with you:• If you can’t bear to leave your dog or cat behind, check for pet friendly hotels. Be realistic about the amount of time you will be able to spend with your pet. If you are away from your pet over 50% of the day, it may be best to leave your pet at home.• If you will be taking fl ight for your travel plans, carefully consider how the trip will affect your pet. Air travel can be very stressful for pets. • Check with your vet to make sure that there are no special animal health requirements for traveling to your destination.

Staying with a friend:• To have piece of mind, arrange for your pet to stay with a friend during your vacation and then swap services during their trip. • Make sure your pets have a positive interaction before you leave, especially if

Dear Our Towne Readers:

For the fi nancial and quality-of-life wellbeing of Bethlehem we must look to the future as well as act responsibly in the present.

Looking to the future, no initiative in our community offers more potential than the work of the 20/20 Implementation Advisory Committee. The planning accomplished over the last two years involved twenty-six community leaders volunteering over 1,000 hours. Now many of these people, and others that have joined the 20/20 Committee, are engaged in the implementation of the recommendations provided in the report issued in June 2009 and developing options for Town Board consideration. In my forty-years of experience in government, business and non-profi t organizations, I have never seen such a creative, constructive and courageous approach to attaining excellence – and in this case that means excellence for Bethlehem!

On January 26th the Town Board supported the 20/20 Implementation Advisory Committee Work Plan presented by Committee Co-chairs Terri Egan and George Leveille. Now the 20/20 Committee is working with our Town department heads and other staff to bring to the Town Board alternatives and options in leading-edge areas, including:

Accelerate responsible revenue generating economic • growth, particularly from the Vista Technology Campus, the Selkirk Rail Yard Industrial Center and through support for existing and future retail businesses.

21st century governance and management structures, • to promote effectiveness and effi ciencies, including such matters as elected and appointed offi ces and terms of offi ce.

Strengthen fi nancial management and capital planning • to cut costs and plan for future capital needs.

Reorganization and unifi cation of the Town’s Public • Works and Highway Departments to reduce costs and be more effi cient.

A state-of-the-art Town-wide economic development • partnership (involving the Town, Bethlehem and RCS School Districts, Bethlehem’s fi ve Fire Districts, two ambulance districts and the library) to share in the responsibilities and benefi ts of managing sustained community growth.

A virtual community center to facilitate community use of • Town, School, Fire District and Library facilities.

Savings and service enhancements from Town and • School sharing/consolidated services.

New revenue streams to support “green” environmental • protection projects.

In the present, Town business is being accomplished effi ciently and professionally by your Town Board and the staff at Town Hall:

At its February 23rd Board Meeting, the Town Board • will be considering the creation of a District Board of Ambulance Commissioners to strengthen oversight and the delivery of ambulance services throughout Bethlehem. In the area of health and safety, the Town Board • will be considering lowered speed limits for Delaware Avenue in the school zone opposite the Bethlehem Central High School. Quality of life issues are moving forward too, and • that is why we are considering the creation of tobacco free parks in our Town during our March 9th Town Board meeting. After many months of study, deliberation and • extensive input from all sides of the issue, a cell tower, compatible with the surrounding area, will be erected on Van Dyke Road that will improve cell service for our Town. Our new website posting process is working well, as • indicated by the receipt of fi fteen letters of interest and resumes for four positions on our very active PaTHs 4 Bethlehem Committee. Our Deputy Supervisor briefed the Town Board on • the Lafarge cement plant issues. (Although the plant is not in Bethlehem, residents in Selkirk, including children at the RCS High School and Middle School could be impacted by any air quality issues, and a number of Bethlehem residents are also employed by Lafarge.)

Last, I need to mention the extensive amount of top-priority work and careful analysis that is being invested in two major policy issues: The Normanside Golf Course acquisition is a very complex and emotional issue. At the February 17th public meeting 250 members of the public were in attendance to express their feelings. I assure you, that no matter what the outcome, your Town Board and all of our involved staff will do the very best we can for Bethlehem, as we consider the fi nancial realities, as well as open space and quality-of-life issues. And, with respect to the Vista Technology Campus, I am confi dent that your Town government and the Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency (BIDA) will creatively and effectively work through all of the complex details soon, so that this major revenue and job center becomes a reality.

Looking to the future as well as at the present, I am feeling very positive about the Town of Bethlehem. We are all working together, turning challenges into opportunities. And while it will always be true that not everyone will always be supportive of directions we take as a Town, or decisions that are made along the way, the job we all have to do in Town government is to listen to the people, thoughtfully consider information and options and then make the very best decisions we can for the entire Town.

One of the topics I hear new clients discuss most often is how to “get abs”! Abdominal muscles are almost often strong enough to be visible on all of us, if it weren’t for a layer of umm padding? that covers them! The simplest answer is that the less bodyfat one has, the more defi ned one’s abs will look. It doesn’t mean they’re strong necessarily, but they are visible they are. Mike Boyle, aka The Strength Coach addresses this topic, underscoring the importance not only of nutritional intake but of the type of training proven most effective at reducing body fat.

“I can’t even tell you how often I hear someone at the end of the workout say something like “I need to do more abs, I want to get a six-pack.” The truth is that passing on a six-pack is a better way to get a six-pack than six hundred sit-ups. The key to abdominal defi nition is the visibility of the abdominal musculature, not the strength of the muscles. You can do one million sit-ups, crunches or whatever exercise you want and it will have no effect on abdominal defi nition. When people ask me the best exercise for abs I tell them table push-aways. It usually takes a few minutes for them to get it. It’s not a joke, it’s the truth. If you want better abs, eat less and train more but, don’t just train your abs.

The idea of working abs to get abs is one of the oldest misconceptions in training. This goes back to the old idea of spot reduction. Spot reduction has never and will never work. The research has been done over and over and the answer is always the same. You can’t decrease the fat layer on a particular area by working that area. That means that the guys doing sit-ups to lose abdominal fat and the lady sitting on the adductor (inner thigh) machine are both wasting their time. Good total body work is, was, and always will be the key to fat loss.

Want better abdominal defi nition? Finish every workout with some hard interval training instead of extra sit-ups or crunches. Interval training or what is currently called High Intensity Interval Training (abbreviated HIIT) is the real key to fat loss and the resulting defi nition. Interval training burns more calories than steady state aerobic training and because it is s sprint program you get a sprinters body.

Abdominal training may potentially reduce the diameter of the waistline but, will do very little to reduce bodyfat. The truth is there are lots of good reasons to do abdominal work or core training as we now like to call it. A strong core ( strong abs) is one of the keys in the prevention of back pain. A strong core will help you look

better and improve performance in a host of sports but, sit-ups or any other abdominal exercise will not reduce bodyfat. The fact of the matter is that crunches will lead to back pain long before they lead to visual abs.

Another good tip. Don’t do crunches. A good abdominal or core program is a lot more than crunches. Most of your core work should be isometric exercises like front planks and side planks or carries like Suitcase carries. . One of the major functions of the core musculature is the prevention of motion. What does that mean? It means that the abdominals are great stabilizers. Work on the stability function, not on fl exion and extension.”

Great advice; not always easy but simple and effective. Just how your training should be.

For 38 years, Paul was one of the most ardent and successful disability policy advocates working on behalf of The Arc and United Cerebral Palsy Organizations. He is a nationally recognized expert on public policy and disability, having been extensively involved in the passage of many vital federal laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and its successor, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Greetings fellow readers…

One of the greatest pleasures here at Tattered Pages Used Books is the conversations with customers (bookshop friends) who share their love of books with me. I love learning something new everyday...what a great classroom! I learn so much from the people who come in looking for their next “read” and often end up with a new “friend”. Not unlike the new “friending” done on Facebook…face to face encounters happen daily here at the shop discussing authors, genres, topics and themes! Often total strangers start discussing with other customers while searching the shelves here. Recently a bookstore friend mentioned to me that our shop is reminiscent of a “town square” or “downtown” in that chance encounters often develop into discussions in our “living room” area and continue on much longer than a typical shopping experience. I have watched friendships develop as women discuss authors and topics and share everything from author recommendations…to recipes and crafting techniques! A recent new customer and wife spent an hour browsing, then sitting, reading and discussing which books from our Art section that they were going to take home. The gentleman shared with me that he had just retired as an engineer and wanted to now spend endless hours reading up on classical artists such as DaVinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and classic novelists such as Henry James, Oscar Wilde and D.H. Lawrence. He left with 6 books and vowed to return soon for others that he had re-shelved. His wife left with British authors; Barbara Pym and Jacqueline Winspear. (Winspear’s books involve Maisie Dobbs a keen investigator solving murder mysteries in post WWI England.) Another customer was thrilled to fi nd that I had Fern Michael’s “Celebration” a romance novel that she had left in her doctor’s offi ce that morning. She was headed for the airport and didn’t have time to go to the doctor’s offi ce to retrieve her book. She had called me on the way to the airport, discovered we had it and ran in to buy another copy! Love connecting people with their books! Though winter is hanging on, I did see robins in the trees the other day, and Punxsutawney Phil says Spring is just around the corner! Spring is a great time to clean out, de-clutter, organize and perhaps re-think your personal libraries. Though we love to have new inventory in the shop, please remember our trade policy sets a limit of 8 books per visit! As long as your books are free of any odor, dirt or dust and hardcovers have dustjackets and

One of the most powerful novels that I have read this past year is by Irish author, and winner of the Irish Book Award in 2010, Emma Donoghue. “Room” is a story of survival, betrayal and a mother’s love inspired by the horrifi c Austrian Fritzl case of 2008. Told in the voice of 5 year old Jack and through his perspective we learn of the life of Jack and his mother in an 11 by 11 foot “room”, their plight and triumph. It is a story that still shakes me to the core even now when I refl ect upon it. On a lighter, yet still “Irish” note…I would like to welcome you to come by Tattered Pages Used Books to meet my new “Greeter Dog” Seamus. Irish Soda Bread RecipeIngredients4 to 4 1/2 cups fl our2 Tbsp sugar1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking soda4 Tbsp butter1 cup raisins1 large egg, lightly beaten2 cups buttermilk

1. Preheat oven to 425°. Sift together 4 cups of fl our, the sugar, salt, and baking soda into a large mixing bowl.

2. Using a pastry cutter or two knives (can also use your fi ngers), work butter into fl our mixture until it resembles coarse meal, then stir in raisins.

3 Make a well in the center of the fl our mixture. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to well and mix in with a wooden spoon until dough is too stiff to stir. Dust hands with a little fl our, then gently knead dough in the bowl just long enough to form a rough ball. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add in a little more fl our. Do not over-knead! Transfer dough to a lightly fl oured surface and shape into a round loaf. Note that the dough will be a little sticky, and quite shaggy (a little like a shortcake biscuit dough). You want to work it just enough so that it comes together. If you over-knead, the bread will end up tough.

4 Transfer dough to a large, lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet (it will fl atten out a bit in the pan or on the baking sheet). Using a serrated knife, score top of dough about an inch or so deep in an “X” shape. The purpose of the scoring is to help heat get into the center of the dough while it cooks. Transfer to oven and bake until bread is golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped, about 35-45 minutes. (If you use a cast iron pan, it may take a little longer as it takes longer for the pan to heat up than a baking sheet.) Check for doneness also by inserting a long, thin skewer into the center. If it comes out clean, it’s done.

Hint 1: If the top is getting too dark while baking, tent the bread with some aluminum foil.

Hint 2: If you use a cast iron skillet to cook the bread in the oven, be very careful when you take the pan out. It’s easy to forget that the handle is extremely hot. Cool the handle with an ice cube, or put a pot holder over it.

Remove pan or sheet from oven, let bread sit in the pan or on the sheet for 5-10 minutes, then remove to a rack to cool briefl y. Serve bread warm, at room temperature, or sliced and toasted. Best when eaten warm and just baked.

Are Your Investments Getting Enough Exercise? Now that spring is here, you may fi nd it easier to get outside to run, bike or take part in other physical pursuits that you enjoy. As you know, the more active you are, the more effi ciently your body will work. And the same can hold true for your investments: The more exercise they get, the more potential to work on your behalf.

Just how do investments get “exercise”? Through lots of activity. And you can keep your investments active in at least two ways: through systematic investing and dividend reinvestment. Let’s take a look at both these techniques.

When you engage in systematic investing, commonly called “dollar cost averaging,” you are continually putting your money “in motion.” Essentially, you put the same amount of money into the same investments at regular intervals. For example, you might decide to invest $100 per month in Company ABC stock. To impose this investment discipline on yourself, you could even have the money sent directly from your checking or savings account.

Of course, since the price of ABC stock, like those of all stocks, is constantly changing, your $100 investment will most likely buy different numbers of

shares each month. This can work to your advantage, because when the stock price of ABC goes down, your $100 will buy more shares. When the price goes up, you’ll automatically be a smart enough “shopper” to buy fewer shares, just as you’d typically buy less of something when its price goes up.

Over time, systematic investing typically results in a lower average cost per share than if you were to make sporadic lump-sum investments. If you can lower the cost of investing, this may help boost your investment returns. This also can be an effective way to fund your retirement account(s) each year. (Keep in mind, though, that systematic investing does not guarantee a profi t or protect against loss. Also, you’ll need the fi nancial resources available to keep investing through up and down markets.)

Dividend reinvestment is similar to systematic investing in that it allows you to build more shares of an investment. But when you reinvest dividends, you don’t even have to take money from other sources to increase your shares — you simply request that a stock or a mutual fund, instead of paying you a dividend in cash, reinvest the dividend into that same stock or mutual fund. It’s an effortless way of adding shares. Similar to dollar cost averaging, dividend reinvestment imposes investment discipline — you automatically keep putting money in the market during up and down periods. (Don’t forget, though, that dividends can be increased, decreased or eliminated at any point without notice.)

Exercising your investment dollars in these ways can help you go a long way toward keeping your portfolio in good shape — enabling you to make healthy progress toward your important long-term goals.

BETHLEHEM RESIDENTS SHINE ON WMHTHello fellow frozen Popsicle people. The other day, a friend and I were talking about how cold this winter weather has been and, how at times, we’ve felt like frozen popsicles. Yes, I think it’s safe to say that’s what we’ve all turned into over this frigid winter. He then commented that if he were a popsicle, he’d want to be grape. (then pick up with rest of copy: ) I said I’d be Caribbean Fruit Punch.I fi gured besides tasting yummy, I’d maybe feel a little warm inside too! Hold on Popsicle people…..warmer weather is on its way! March’s calendar reminds us of two important dates. On March 13th , Daylight Saving Time begins and March 20th welcomes in the fi rst day of spring.

This past December I, along with many members of the Bethlehem community had the pleasure to be part of an upcoming WMHT production, “Our Town Bethlehem”. It’s a video documentary that asks the question, “What makes Bethlehem such a great place to live?” What’s so neat about it is that about 50 people in our community became documentary photographers and storytellers. Residents video taped their own stories. They captured personalities, organizations, history and events of our fi ne community. The tapes were then shared in interviews with WMHT. These were held on December 15th and 16th at the NYSARC Building located on Delaware Avenue. It was an opportunity for residents of all ages, from elementary school students to young at heart seniors to tell why Bethlehem is such a great place to live.

My own story for WMHT highlighted Channel 18, Bethlehem’s public access television station, located in our library right here in the heart of Delmar. A special thank you to Freddie Dunn who did an awesome job video taping my story. Freddie…..I couldn’t have done it without your help. As far as my camera skills go….. let’s just say that when

James Cameron is looking to hire a cinematographer for Avatar 2, I wouldn’t even get an interview for the job! Ch. 18 broadcasts many shows covering a wide variety of topics. The station promotes itself as airing topics such as public affairs and poetry, religion and relationships, music and medicine and education and environment. Local school and town board meetings are also cablecast. An awesome Community Bulletin Board is available for viewing around the clock. Posting announcements for an event or service for not-for-profi t organizations are free. How great is that!

A part of my video on Ch. 18 focuses on a talk show I created and host called, “Everyday Bethlehem People” which airs Monday evenings at 6pm. EBP focuses on local residents who make a positive contribution to our community. This can be done through their career and/or volunteering. I developed the show because I wanted to create a greater awareness of the people in our town who

help make it such a great place to live.

I’ve interviewed many wonderful people from teens to seniors. I can truly say that after spending time with them and listening to their stories, I walk away with feelings of appreciation and admiration for people right here in our own back yard. It is a testimony to my belief that people are good and have big hearts. During tapings, conversations with guests rage from the serious side to good humor. It never ceases to amaze me how talented they

are and how important it is for them to give back to our community. Listening to them, it’s obvious that many Bethlehem residents have a strong sense of community. We just didn’t know about how much good goes on. Thanks WMHT and Ch. 18 for bringing this to the forefront for all of us to view. Now I know why I call Bethlehem home.

Happy offi cial spring to everyone. Remember.....the ground hog did not see his shadow on February 2nd.....and you know what that means.....it will be an early spring. I sure hope Punxsutawney Phil knows what he’s talking about!

Chris is a local professional triathlete, born and raised here in the Capital District. He began his career in 2005 as an amateur athlete and has earned multiple trips to the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

The Ironman race is the longest distance triathlon, requiring athletes to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a marathon –– 26.2 miles –– all in one day. It is well known as one of the most gruelling one-day endurance events in the world.

The intense commitment required is part of what attracts Chris to Ironman. The Cedar Hill Schoolhouse is known as the meeting place of the Bethlehem Historical Association and our town museum. But from the time the original, smaller building was erected in 1859 until it closed 100 years later in 1959, it was a real, working school and part of the Ravena-Coeymans Selkirk District.

Students from that later time are with us today, and even the then very young teacher is still living locally. Former students will gath-er in this very special building at 7:30 on March 17th to reminisce

about their school experiences, and to share photographs and relics of those days.

The public is invited to hear about learning in a one-room school, something most of us associate with pioneer days. The event is free and refreshments will be served. The address is the corner of River and Clapper Roads.
