Hi Bethlehem,

May is one of those months that will fl y by! We celebrate both Mothers Day and Memorial Day. With any luck we’ll have some of those 80 degree days!

OUR TOWNE will once again be participating in the Memorial Day Parade. It’s great to see so many neighbors get together. I hope you can make it. By now your lfe is probably as hectic as ours, with spring sports, concerts and full weekends of enjoying the weather. However.... there is less than two months until the end of school!

Hang in there!

Letter from our Town SupervisorSam Messina

In last month’s Our Towne I wrote about my dream as your Town’s Supervisor being, among other things that “we would excel in the way people want their elected offi cials to be. We will innovate and dare to be different when

it serves our community best.”

Since I last reported to you I can say that the Town Board, and all town staff, working together, is clearly moving in this direction. Here are a couple of examples:

The Town Board, working with the Bethlehem Chamber • of Commerce, has established quarterly Bethlehem Business Forums, to hear about the concerns of local businesses and to fi nd opportunities to support businesses. The fi rst Forum is scheduled for Friday, May 14th, 7:45 – 9:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Town Hall.

The Town Board will be holding quarterly Meetings • Around Town in all of Bethlehem’s fi ve hamlets, which will be informal sessions where Town staff will provide an overview of key issues including those impacting that area of town. Then, and most important, Bethlehem’s citizens will have a chance to raise issues of importance to them, and the Town Board and staff will listen, learn and respond, if appropriate. The meetings generally won’t have a single purpose and our goal is to have a dialogue.

The Town is moving forward to implement the 20/20 • Report recommendations. The Town Board has agreed to advance, as a priority, three major initiatives: improving our Town’s organization and operations; developing and implementing a Town-wide economic development strategy; and creating an intergovernmental working group focused on service delivery and fi nancial planning. (You will be hearing much more about these matters in the near future.)

Bethlehem has been successful in a competitive • grant process to bring two energy saving grants to Bethlehem; a solar energy panel for the Elm Avenue Parks and Recreation administration building, and; grant funds to bring an energy specialist into Bethlehem town government for one year to explore other savings opportunities.

We have had several of our fi ne staff appointed to • leadership positions in professional organizations or recognized for their outstanding work. Bethlehem has recognized their service too, and that is important to those individuals as well as to our community.

Your Town Board recommended to County Executive • Michael Breslin that town resident Ted Putney be appointed as the county representative to the Hudson River Valley Greenway Communities Council, and this was achieved. That is good news for the Town of Bethlehem.

In the last Our Towne I also described the challenges facing our town (and any government): Fiscal Responsibility; Quality of Life, and; Excellence in Government. During the past month we have made the most progress in the Excellence in Government area. We will continue to drive forward there, but I assure you that in the next month or two you will see that effective budgeting, ramping up tax abating economic development and moving forward on key planning initiatives will be high priorities. And I am confi dent that, working together, our Town Board, our excellent staff, volunteers and our citizens who are a vitally important part of the process, we will achieve the goal of making Bethlehem the “Best Local Government That It Can Be.”

Starting in the last Our Towne I began showcasing an individual Town department, because Town residents should know more about the terrifi c leaders, staff and programs that serve them day-in-and-day-out. This month it is timely to have Nan Lanahan, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, provide some information about her department and the programs that will be offered in the coming months.

Sincerely,

Sam Messina

The Parks and Recreation Department strives to enrich the lives of our residents through quality parks and activities. We operate seven parks, Colonial Acres Golf Course, a Dog Park, and the future Moh-He-Con-Nuck Nature Preserve. We also offer a variety of athletic, aquatic, and cultural programs throughout the year for people or all ages. Our most signifi cant features for the upcoming summer months include our three-pool complex including Splash Islands, picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts, boating and fi shing at Henry Hudson Park, and of course Colonial Acres Golf Course.

Summer activities and special events are too numerous to list here. We do feature our own Camp Adventure which includes swimming, crafts, games, and fi eld trips. Special events include our 4th of July Family Day, concerts, theater, movies, and much more.

Please visit the Parks and Recreation Department website (www.townofbethlehem.org) and tour all of our parks. You can also view our recently mailed Park Playbook, your play by play guide to all your recreation needs, for a complete list of activities and events!

Carrie Brown fell in love with Africa in during a high school trip to the country of Kenya during the summer of her sophomore year at BCHS. Once she got there…..she knew that one day she’d return to Africa. Carrie loved the friendliness of the people and found the culture compelling. While pursuing a M.F.A in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design, she fulfi lled her dream of returning to Africa for 6 months to work on her thesis. She went to Woe, a village on the eastern coast of Ghana. She volunteered with the non-profi t organization Cross Cultural Solutions (CCS) as a freelance photographer and documented the daily life in Woe. This allowed her to travel around the village and to get to know the people well and learn about their culture. The more she saw…..the more she wanted to stay. They showed her a different way of life unlike that back in the States. Carrie points out that getting someplace on time wasn’t a priority but saying hello to people you meet was.

She also realized how important it was to the villagers to have their “traditions” documented for history. Her thesis project produced a self-published book, Born on Monday, which is a photographic documentary on Ghana with essays by CCS Ghana staff. Carrie chose this title for her book because she was born on a Monday, and Ghanaians are named after the day of the week they are born. Brown returned to Savannah College and earned her masters degree. Shortly thereafter she returned to Woe for 15 months and began teaching photography in a senior high school. She loved working with the students and found her passion in life. The students were very interested in learning photography and for many of them it was their fi rst experience using a camera and so; classroom instruction began with basic information. Carrie remembers the joy and amazement in the students’ faces as they were processing and printing photos. One student, Genevieve, commented how clear they were and she had never seen pictures like that before. A whole new world opened up to her by a simple photograph of a fi sherman mending a net! Carrie returned home and starting the ball rolling to begin a permanent program called Kekeli Inc. which means “daylight”. It is a non-profi t organization in the USA which provides opportunities for Ghanaian youths to learn photography. Its goal was to establish and open a photography school in Ghana for youths to learn a vocational skill they could use to earn a living. Carrie is proud to point out that students from Bethlehem Central High School helped organize 2 fund raising events in 2008 and 2009. Many students donated artwork to

these fundraisers for Kekeli Inc. Carrie opened the school to three different groups of students from diverse backgrounds. Openings were extended to students who usually wouldn’t have an opportunity to study photography. These students were orphans, those with learning disabilities and children with relatives who have been cured of the disease leprosy. She said, “Each of these groups has a stigma attached to them and the cured lepers, in particular, are treated as outsiders by the community. The families of cured lepers are isolated socially, living in an area outside of the town.” What was important to Carrie was to create a more positive image of these children to help remove the stigma attached to them. Using her photography skills, Carrie developed learning materials for students in a special needs program. Brown began taking different pictures and using them as learning tools in the classroom. She also created games and learning materials to use as interesting and stimulating lessons to educate the students and to share with their parents. She fondly remembers taking the kids’ pictures with their names attached and hanging them up in the classroom. The kids loved looking at themselves and proudly showed them off to every classroom visitor! Carrie plans to return to Ghana on June 30th to teach for two years. This year Kekeli Inc. is actively involved with Company of Common Sense, a program in conjunction with the 2012 Olympic Games being held in London. Carrie will organize arts and storytelling programs in Ghana for the 2012 Storytellers’ Olympiad. Her students will certainly be involved with the project. They will tell stories. These will be written down with added illustrations. It will be a kind of historical document of short stories. A book and a DVD will be created with the help of her talented photography students snapping away with the camera and taking awesome pictures. Carrie Brown is a documentary photographer. She views

life through a lens and captures it on fi lm. But she gives so much more than photos to her students. Whether they are pictures of themselves smiling or pictures used as instructional tools and games, she uses them to teach her students not only lessons in the classroom but lessons on life as well. Kekeli, Inc. will gratefully accept monetary donations as well as cameras both fi lm and digital. A fundraising event will be held on Friday June 11, 2010 from 6-8pm at the Delmar Reformed Church. Please call 518-465-6576 or e-mail [email protected] for more information. To learn more about Kekeli, Inc. visit our website at www.kekeliinc.com

Spring Showers Bring Driving Safety HazardsWorn out tires and windshield wiper blades are symptoms of neglected vehicle maintenance that put drivers and passengers at serious risk during the typically rainy months of spring.

Thin tire treads create hazardous driving conditions when water builds up on the roadway, according to the Car Care Council. Deep tread accommodates accumulated water; thin tread does not. Thin tread causes the tire to hydroplane – ride up on a fi lm of water, losing contact with the pavement, similar to driving on ice.

The simplest way to check tire tread depth is with a penny. Insert the penny into the grooves of the tread. If you are able to see all of Lincoln’s head, the tire needs replacement.

Rainy weather also affects driver visibility. Because 90 percent of driving decisions depend on good vision, a clean windshield is imperative. Streaking and smearing impair vision and are caused by worn windshield blades. One out of every fi ve vehicles that went through the Car Care Council’s check lanes had worn wiper blades.

“Replacing worn wiper blades is easy and inexpensive,” said Rich White of the Car Care Council. “Why put it off until there’s a downpour and your blades are chattering and smearing the windshield?”

IIn this month’s “Ask the Pharmacist” we will answer some important questions about the seasonal concern of deer ticks and Lyme disease. Deer are extremely prevalent in this area and ticks can be a worry to those who spend a lot of time outdoors in the spring and summer. What is Lyme Disease?Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks. People who spend time in grassy and wooded areas are at an increased risk of exposure to Lyme disease. This risk is increased from May-August, when ticks are most active and abundant. If Lyme disease is left untreated it can progress to cause symptoms that affect the skin, nervous system, heart, and joints. How do I protect myself from Tick Bites? There are many ways to protect yourself from tick bites and stay safe while you are outside in the summer. Here are some easy tips: • Cover yourself: wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.• Tuck in loose clothing.• Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors.• Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails.• Avoid sitting directly on the ground or in vegetation. • Keep long hair tied back, especially when going through wooded areas.• Wear light-colored clothing so that ticks can be spotted easily.• Use an appropriate insect repellent!

What Type of Repellent Should I Use?There are many different types of insect repellents available. It is important to know that not all repellents protect against ticks so be sure to check the ingredients. Ingredients that protect against ticks are:• DEET: Use an insect repellent with a 10-30% concentration of DEET. Apply the repellent to exposed skin and to the outside of clothing.o DEET comes in concentrations ranging from 5%-100%. The higher the concentration the higher the protection, but the higher the risk of side effects (headache, dizziness, bad smell, clothes damage).

o Use the lowest concentration that you think will provide the protection you need. o The American Acedemy of Pediatrics states that products with 10%-30% DEET are safe and effective for children. Products with these concentrations are effective for about 2 hours – 5 hours respectably and should be reapplied if children remain outdoors longer. (aapnews.aappublications.org)

• Picardin: Picardin products can repel ticks and have low adverse effects. However, there is no safety data in children and therefore are not yet recommended for children.

• Oil of menthol eucalyptus: Currently there is no evidence that these products repel ticks and therefore are not recommended for use.

• Permethrin: Permethrin products are for use on clothing only, not on skin. These products kill ticks that come in contact with treated clothes. o Permethrin can remain effective for 2 weeks if treated clothes are not washed. Keep these clothes in a plastic bag when not in use.o These products are known to cause eye irritation and contact with eyes should be avoided. What precautions should I take with children?People of any age can be a target for tick bites and can acquire Lyme disease. Children need protection and to be checked for tick bites. Children may be at greater risk for adverse reactions to repellents and an adult should assist in their application. • Keep repellents out of the reach of children. • Do not allow children to apply repellents to themselves. • Use only small amounts of repellent on children using 10% DEET.• Do not apply repellents to the hands of young children (it may result in accidental eye contact or ingestion)• Dress children in long sleeves and long pants tucked into boots or socks. • Use netting over strollers, playpens, etc. • DEET products are not recommended for children under 2 months of age

What do I do if I fi nd a tick bite?1. Don’t panic. Your chances of acquiring Lyme are low if the tick is removed during the fi rst 24-36 hours 2. Remove the tick promptly and properly:- Using tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.- Gently pull the tick in a steady, upward motion.- Wash the area with a disinfectant.

When trying to remove the tick:• DO NOT touch the tick with your bare hands or try to remove it with your fi ngers• DO NOT squeeze the body of the tick as this may increase your risk of infection.• DO NOT put alcohol, nail polish remover or Vaseline on

Cynderella's customers;

We have closed our doors, however we would like to thank so many of you for your continued support and patronage over the past 15 years. It has been both a pleasure and an honor to serve all of you and we will miss you very much. Thank you for the opportunity you have given us and the many friendships we have made along the way. It is diffi cult to fully convey our appreciation in this way, however we truly could not have done it without you.

The students at Glenmont Elementary School, as part of a grant project partially funded by Pepsi, have been learning about dance and music from the 1930’s and 1940’s. To bring the lessons to life, residents of Delmar Place, an assisted living community, have been visiting monthly and sharing their fi rst hand experiences. It’s not only about the music and the dance steps, but about bringing different generations together. Prior to the fi rst meeting, residents prepared short biographies for the students to get acquainted with them. They shared simple information like favorite color, pastimes, occupation, and where they grew up. From this the children developed questions for the visit and introduced themselves to their “adopted grandparents”. Some of the classrooms sent their “grandparent” home with hand-made cards and notes, some with photos of the visit. Some residents received follow-up cards. It has been a beautiful experience.

There is nothing like the joy and hope that children exude. The participating residents left Glenmont Elementary excited and full of smiles. Each commented on how wonderful the children were and how happy they felt to participate in the gathering. They are looking forward to the next visit. Monthly visits are scheduled in April, May and June with the hope of culminating the “Grandparent Program” with a real Swing party complete with big band music and dancing.

Teachers and students have commented on how much they enjoyed getting to know their “grandparents”. They expressed some surprise at the wonderful experiences and accomplishments the visiting seniors have achieved. What a wonderful lesson these young people are learning--to value and appreciate the elders in our communities. Even though times and technology have changed, the love of music and dance found a way to bridge the differences. When the visit ended, the children escorted their “grandparents” to the school entrance where they loaded the vehicle for the return trip to Delmar Place. The children and the residents hugged and waved goodbye as if this was not their fi rst get-together, but a long awaited reunion. Perhaps it was in a way, for in that visit, the seniors returned to their childhood, shared their memories, carrying the children along with them. Both were changed by the experience as common ground was formed.

If you have an opportunity to visit a senior, take the time to do so. They will greatly appreciate a warm smile and a conversation. It is good to let them know that we care about them and are interested in their stories. In the end, by taking the time to do so, we receive the greater gift. Volunteers are always welcome at Delmar Place. To get involved, please call the Welcome Desk at 434-HOME (4663).

Hi Friends,

There are many holidays throughout the year but one of my favorites is Mother’s Day.

Did you know that Mother’s Day has offi cially been recognized in the US for about 100 years? The holiday is to honor mothers and, as we all know, there really isn’t just one type of mom. There are biological mothers, step-mothers, foster moms, big sisters, cousins, aunts and grandmothers who children give that special word “mom” to. There are teachers, social workers, school counselors, ministers and adult female friends too. What’s important here is that children are given love, care and support.

Children honor their moms in many ways. While gifts can be bought, handmade items are just as wonderful. I still have the mother’s day gifts my kids made for me in pre-school! I often look at their “homemade” cards and still get a laugh from them. Now that my kids are older and have jobs………a card with a dinner reservation inside it will do nicely!

I am one of eight children…..5 boys and 3 girls. My mom did an outstanding job raising us while also working outside our home for 25 years, teaching at Saugerties High School. (I think the woman meets the qualifi cations to run for president!) I still remember the stories she told and the family traditions she handed down to us. I am doing that with my own children. OMG……I’m beginning to sound and act like my mother!

As a child, I remember the gentleness of her touch and the soft sound of her voice…..except when I heard, “I need to speak with you right now Mary Katherine!” I immediately lost any teenage attitude I was carrying or the smirk on my face. An internal radar signal was alerting me to the seriousness of the situation - which never was a good sign! It was kind of like the caution warning the robot shouted out to Will Robinson and Dr. Smith in the 1960’s TV series “Lost in Space” when the two of them were approaching a potentially dangerous situation…….”Danger Will Robinson….danger!”.

My Mom is 80 years young. How lucky I am to still have her in my life. Over the years I have known men and women who have lost their mothers. I know that time heals missing someone but I can only imagine that on this holiday, many memories of our mothers resurface. For those of us still fortunate enough to have a mom with us, let’s make sure we tell her “Thanks and I love you.”

On May 9th, I plan on spending some time with my mom. If by chance she offers me advice and kiddingly calls me “Mary Katherine”, I’m sure we’ll both start laughing and I will smile back at my best friend and the woman who gave me life. Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!

Talk to you soon.

the tick.• DO NOT put a hot match or cigarette on the tick in an effort to make it “back out.”After a tick bite is discovered, call your physician to determine if you are at risk for Lyme disease.

What are early Symptoms of Lyme disease to look for? Signs of Lyme disease can appear from 3 to 30 days after a bite occurs. This rash is often called a “bull’s eye rash” because of its very characteristic appearance. Below is a photo of an individual with Lyme disease and the typical bull’s eye rash:

Less identifi able symptoms include fever, headache, and fatigue.

Q: There are a number of dogs in my neighborhood and one of them recently bit my 10 year old. What can I do to help prevent future dog bites?: Dog bites and attacks are a serious health problem. Dog bites requiring medical attention in the United States number 500,000 to 800,000 annually. Countless more bites go unreported and untreated. May is National Dog Bite Prevention month. The vast majority of dog bites are from a dog known to the child—his or her own pet, a neighbor’s or friend’s. You can help prevent this from happening to your child. Please discuss with him or her the appropriate way to behave around dogs. The following tips will help you and your child understand the difference between safe and potentially dangerous interactions with dogs.1.Do not stare into a dog’s eyes.2. Do not go near or tease dogs behind fences or chained in yards.3. Do not touch a dog that is off-leash outside.4. Teach your child if they see a loose dog to tell an adult immediately.5. Do not run and scream if a loose dog comes near you.6. Stand very still like a tree and be very quiet if a dog comes near you.7. Do not touch or play with a dog while he or she is eating.8. Do not touch a dog when he or she is sleeping.9. Only pet a dog if you have received permission from the dog’s owner.10. Ask permission of the dog by letting him sniff a closed hand.11. If you fall or are knocked over by a dog, curl up into a ball with your hands over your head and neck. Protect your face.12. If a dog approaches to sniff you, stay still. In most cases, the dog will go away when it determines you are not a threat.

Remember, regardless of size or breed, any dog can bite if provoked. Responsible pet ownership is the key to reducing the likelihood of a dog bite. Dog owners must understand the importance of

appropriate behavioral training and supervision of contact between their dog and children or strangers.

What happens when you bring together more than 300 women, ask them to all wear red, and give them the chance to learn and laugh? In the case of the sixth annual Go Red for Women Luncheon on Tuesday, May 18, at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany, you deliver a strong blow to heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women in America. “Women put off taking care of their health while they take care of everyone else’s,” said Kathy Lanni, chairwoman of the American Heart Association event, which raises funds to fi ght heart disease in women. “We put ourselves on the back burner until there’s a fi re, and this luncheon is a great opportunity to improve our heart health.” Lanni, account manager with BroadBlast Managed Communications, became involved with the American Heart Association four years ago, after her daughter Erin was diagnosed with third-degree heart block and received a pacemaker at the age of 18. Lanni has worked with a group of executives to put together the Go Red for Women Luncheon, which begins at 10 a.m. at The Desmond Hotel and Conference Center. In the morning, there will be manicure touch-ups provided by Allusions Hair and Nails, health screenings, a silent auction, and two breakout sessions. The sessions are:

•“Healthy, Wealthy and Wise,” presented by Alissa Quinn and Carol Nieckarz of UBS Financial Services The Quinn Group and Eileen Lawlor of Canyon Ranch. Moderated by Laura Daniels of B95.5’s Ric and Laura in the Morning. •“It’s Your Heart: What To Expect In Your 20s, 30s, 40s and Beyond,” presented by St. Peter’s Cardiac & Vascular Center.

A new feature at this year’s luncheon is “A Picture and a Promise.” Photographer Thea Coughlin will take photos of women, who will be encouraged to make a pledge to themselves about something they’d like to do to improve

their health and well-being. “Our guests will receive a card with their picture and the promise on it,” said Kelly Heaney, American Heart Association director of the Go Red For Women Luncheon. “We get so busy, but if we commit to just one change, it can make a big difference.” Benita Zahn of NewsChannel 13 will be the mistress of ceremonies at the luncheon. Keynote speaker at the luncheon is Nadja Piatka of Nadja Foods. Johanna Tessman will share her story of heart disease. The Desmond will serve a delicious and heart-healthy lunch. Tickets are still available to the luncheon at the cost of $100. For information or to make a reservation, call 869-4051 or visit www.heart.org/capitalregionnygoredluncheon.National sponsors of Go Red for Women are Macy’s and Merck. SEFCU is the Capital Region Goes Red sponsor. St. Peter’s is the Heart Health sponsor and Albany Medical Center is the Heart Check-up Sponsor.

Dear Constant Reader…A former Maine schoolteacher who founded the Dead Poets Society of America and traveled 15,000 miles to document the graves of poets has a new mission — to create a Dead Poets Remembrance Day on Oct. 7, the date master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe died.Amateur poet Walter Skold of Freeport is launching his new endeavor Friday, beginning another 22-state tour of the graves of fallen bards. He’s enlisted 13 state poets laureate to help drum up support. His “Dead Poets Grand Tour 2010” kicks off on what’s believed to be the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth in 1564 with a poetry reading at Portland’s Eastern Cemetery, the burial place of British and American sea captains cited in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “My Lost Youth.”“Of course, it takes a little chutzpah to say we’re starting a holiday,” said Skold, who left his job as a public school technology teacher to pursue his passions of poetry and photography. “But we believe it’s a really good idea, and we hope it catches on nationwide.”As in last year’s tour, Skold will drive a boxy cargo van, dubbed the Poemobile, to graveyards. But this year, the 49-year-old Skold will be accompanied by a couple from Georgia who will fi lm the journey for a documentary they hope to make.Having learned from past mistakes, Skold sought permission from cemeteries ahead of time so there’s no suspicion about satanic rituals or disrespectful behavior. The idea of a day of remembrance was inspired by Skold’s discovery that the nation’s literary forebears have been neglected. Communities have readings at the graves of Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Anne Sexton and other famous poets, but many others are in danger of being forgotten, he said.Wisconsin’s poet laureate, Marilyn L. Taylor, said Dead Poets Remembrance Day is a wonderful idea.“There’s all kinds of commemorative dates for things like National Potato Week or something like that,” she said. “And I think it’s time that the poets got some recognition.”Tennessee’s poet laureate, Margaret Vaughn, noted that April is National Poetry Month. She said it would be nice to have a day set aside to honor poets, as well.Until next month…enjoy Spring and make time for a great book!Trish Eldridge

ARE YOU FIT TO FUNCTION?Sandbag Training and Functional Fitness

How many times have you heard people say they’re bored with their workouts and aren’t seeing the results they’d hoped for? Some do bicep curls and triceps extensions using 5, 8 or10 lb dumbbells, then go home and carry a 25 lb toddler, or suitcase, or bag of cat litter/dog food/mulch/top soil,...

There are very few times in our daily lives where we use our triceps, biceps or calves exclusively to get something done, so why would we train that way? Our bodies were designed to be able to squat, bend, reach, lift , push , pull (and also to sprint in order to avoid being some animal’s lunch). Western culture and propriety dictates that most of us sit in chairs which is an unnatural position, often resulting in short, tight hamstrings, poor posture, and back pain.

Functional fi tness means being strong enough to do all of those natural movements. And because many of us have jobs where squatting at our desks or behind a counter would be frowned upon, we need to incorporate those movements in our workouts. Functional training – exercise that requires you to lift, carry, push and pull - results in whole-body strength that, at the very least, increases your odds of living independently longer.

Sandbags are one of the best tools for this type of full body training and can be made inexpensively using the following items. Most can be found at lumberyards, hardware or discount stores.

Outer bag: sturdy canvas duffel or backpackMiddle bag: Heavy duty contractor bag Inner bag: Offi cial mesh-type sandbags

(found at Army surplus store or online for about $1)Sand: pea gravel or playground sand

Duct tape: “Gorilla Tape” is my favorite

Lay the sand bag fl at and cover completely with duct tape. Fill with desired amount of sand or pea gravel, leaving enough room for it to shift around as you work out. Seal the opening with tape, insert into contractor bag and seal again. Insert into duffel bag and seal. Make a few bags of different weights if you like, so that you can vary your workouts. Try a few of these moves...pace yourself!

Pick it up and put it down. Squat down and bear hug it, stand, 1. squat back down to put it down.Bear hug it and walk around . Do a few laps or a few minutes. 2. Ignore your neighbors. Rest and repeat. You can also carry one or two around by the handles of the duffel. Once you have the hang of carrying it around, try putting it over 3. your shoulder and walk up some stairs or a short hill. Roll it end over end.4. Pick it up and press it overhead or bench press it.5. Hold it on your shoulders/back and squat.6. Hold it by the handles in one hand and squat, resist the pull of 7. the weight, keeping your body square.Dead-lift it, or do a bent-over row8. Throw is as far as you can, run to it, squat down, pick it up and 9. do it again!

It may go without saying, but sandbags are best used outdoors...especially when doing #9...

Have fun!Nancy L. Hallock, CPT [email protected]

FINANCIAL FOCU$Invest in Your Mother’s Future Mother’s Day is almost upon us. This year, in addition to giving Mom some fl owers and a card, why not brighten her day — and her future — by making a fi nancial gift?

Your fi rst thought might be that giving your mother a check may seem “tacky.” But these days, everyone can use a little extra cash. However, you can fi nd other types of fi nancial gifts that can have a longer-lasting impact. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Help Mom fund her IRA. If your mother is still working, • she can contribute to an IRA — and she should. Either a traditional or Roth IRA is a great way to build tax-advantaged savings for retirement. Yet most people don’t fully fund their IRAs each year. In 2010, your mother can put in $5,000 to her IRA, or $6,000 if she’s 50 or older. While you can’t directly contribute to her IRA, you can write a check for that purpose.

Purchase an investment for Mom. If you can afford it, • consider giving a few shares of stock, possibly issued by companies that make products or services your mother uses. (If you give shares that you own, you’ll need to keep records of your initial sales price; this information will be useful to your mother if she ever sells the shares and needs to pay capital gains taxes.) If you think your mother could benefi t from an increase in her cash fl ow, you might consider giving her a corporate or government bond, which can provide regular interest payments.

Take care of a debt payment. The lower your mother’s • debt payments, the more she can put away for retirement. While you probably aren’t in a position to pay off all her debts, perhaps you could handle a car or credit card payment as a Mother’s Day gift.

Make a charitable gift in Mom’s name. Your mother • probably supports many worthy causes — and a fi nancial gift to any one of them, in her name, would probably please her greatly. Furthermore, your generosity may provide you with an immediate tax deduction, assuming the group to which you donate meets the tax deductibility guidelines established by the IRS. In fact, if you donated an appreciated asset,

such as a stock, you could possibly get two tax breaks: a deduction on this year’s taxes and the avoidance of capital gains taxes that will result from the eventual sale of an asset. Before donating this type of asset, though, consult with your tax advisor.

Provide Mom with some fi nancial education. If your • mother doesn’t know much about investing, you might get her a book on the topic. Or, better yet, if you have a fi nancial advisor whom you trust, introduce him or her to your mother. Once your mother enters her pre-retirement and retirement years, she may have many issues — such as cash fl ow management, estate planning and investing to stay ahead of infl ation — for which she could use the help of a fi nancial professional.

Mother’s Day comes and goes in a day — but by making the right type of fi nancial gift to your mother, your generosity can be felt for years to come.

Five Fit Kid Rules:There's a lot of discussion these days about fi t kids. People who care (parents, doctors, teachers, and others) want to know how to help kids be more fi t.

Being fi t is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical activity (exercise), and has a healthy weight. If you're fi t, your body works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do, like run around with your friends.

Some steps only parents can take — such as serving healthy meals or deciding to take the family on a nature hike. But kids can take charge, too, when it comes to health.

Here are fi ve rules to live by, if you're a kid who wants to be fi t. The trick is to follow these rules most of the time, knowing that some days (like your birthday) might call for cake and ice cream.

Eat a Variety of Foods, Especially Fruits & VegetablesYou may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. If you eat different foods, you're more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Taste new foods and old ones you haven't tried for a while. Some foods, such as green veggies, are more pleasing the older you get. Shoot for at least fi ve servings of fruits and vegetables a day — two fruits and three vegetables.

Drink Water and Milk Most OftenWhen you’re really thirsty, cold water is the No. 1 thirst-quencher. And there’s a reason your school cafeteria offers cartons of milk. Kids need calcium to build strong bones, and milk is a great source of this mineral. How much do kids need? If you are younger than 9 years old, drink 2 cups of milk

a day, or its equivalent. Aim for 3 cups of milk per day, or its equivalent. You can mix it up by having milk and some other calcium-rich dairy foods. You probably will want something other than milk or water once in a while, so it’s OK to have 100% juice, too. But try to limit sugary drinks, like sodas, juice cocktails, and fruit punches. They contain a lot of added sugar. Sugar just adds calories, not important nutrients.

Listen to Your BodyWhat does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don’t notice when they need to stop eating. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and, over a period of time, can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

Limit Screen TimeWhat’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games (console systems or handheld games), and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding, and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time, not counting computer use related to school.

Be ActiveOne job you have as a kid — and it’s a fun one — is that you get to fi gure out which activities you like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is karate, or kickball, or dancing. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. Find ways to be active every day. You might even write down a list of fun stuff to do, so you can refer to it when your mom or dad says it’s time to stop watching TV or playing computer games!

Speaking of parents, they can be a big help if you want to be a fi t kid. For instance, they can stock the house with healthy foods and plan physical activities for the family. Tell your parents about these fi ve steps you want to take and maybe you can teach them a thing or two. If you’re a fi t kid, why shouldn’t you have a fi t mom and a fi t dad?

Art at the Arboretum Pein Air (Open Air) events to be held on June 5th and June 11th, July 17th and July 18th.

Pine Hollow Arboretum on Maple Avenue Slingerlands 12159.

The event will host the two days for artists to come and bring their easels, paints, pen and inks, brushes and cameras to capture a sight forever by producing a piece of art. It is hope that artists will then frame the piece of art and bring it to the Arboretum on July 17th between 10 AM and 12 noon for hanging and then to celebrate

and award the artists with a "People's Choice" award on July 18th at a 4PM -6 PM reception.

The intent for the event is to celebrate art, nature and the human pursuit of adventure. The Arboretum is 25 acres with over 2500 species of trees which have managed to thrive in a habitat managed naturally. The pristine site is of value because it contributes to our community's native habitat, and also provide a respite from the nearby busy highway which circles our community. "Our Town" has managed to maintain it historical

atmosphere and it is in the place that nature prevails.
