    Elmwood avenue, died at his homeThanksgiving day. He had b ~ e nill for n ea rl y a year, fol lowing astroke. His death occurred sudden ly . a s he s lept , and followed apartial recovery during which timehe was a bl e to r es ume s ome of hisactivities. He was 56 yca rs of age.

    Mr. Caldwel l was born at Intercourse, Lancaster county, the son ofMr. and Mrs. John B. Caldwell.\Vith his father and two brothers hemoved to Narberth in 1894. beforethe horough was formed, a nd en gagcd in business.The grocery store of C. E. Tayl or was purchased. and for a number of years was conducted a s t heonly stO'rc in the neighborhood. It

R ob er t M .Caldwell, took over the local coalyard. which they managed until Mr.Caldwell entered actively into politics.He was first appointed DeputyTrcasurer of the county, at Norristown. and lat er received a pos ition a t t he S ta te Capital. Late r hewas a ff il ia ted with Schwenk andCaldwell, wholesale grocers, in thecapacity of a representative, traveling t hr ou gh Che st er a nd Mon tgomery counties and the State ofMaryland.In partnership with \Valter Cowi n, t he rea l e st at e f irm of Caldwell

    and Co. was f ormcd, s uc ce ed in gA. D. vVarnock, in the office whichis no w t he home o f the local BoyScout Troop. 'When Mr. Cowinwithdrew, Mr . Caldwell continuedthe business under his own name.In 1924 his son, ]. Baird Caldwell,joined the firm. and later Robert W.Caldwell identified himself with thebusiness.

    Mr. Caldwell was t he agent forWilliam T. Harris in the la tter's extensive building and real estate ope ra tions in the borough over a period of years. Unde r the name ofCaldwell and Harris the two menbuilt and operated the Arcade Theater on Haverford avenue, Narberth's first movie venture .Mr. Caldwel was one of the organizers of the Board of Trade lastyear. He was a member of theNa rbe rth Pre sbyter ian Church andof Cas si a Lodge , No. 273 , F. andA. M., of Ardmore. He was oneof t he f ir st membe rs of the Narberth Fire Company, and a ls o wasprominent in theaffa irs of the Lower Merion-Narberth RepublicanClub.A staunch Republican, he wieldeda noticeable influence in county political affairs. During his Ii fe hemade political enemies and staunchfriends, and was admired for hisdevotion to his family and his generosity and friendship in personalcontacts over a long period of years.He is survived by his aged mothe r, Mrs . Amanda Caldwell, knownto all as "Grandmother;" by hiswife, Mrs . Hel en B ai rd Caldwell,whom he married in 1 90 0; by twobrothers, William J. Caldwell, ofLan ca st er a nd Rob er t W. Caldwell, of Narberth, and by s ix chi ldren: James Baird Caldwell, Helen,Lois, J anet , Ed ith and Eunice.Funeral services were held fromh is home Monday. 'rhe serviceswere conducted by the Rev.
