Picture a young mother with two beautiful toddlers in tow. blue-eyed, blonde and cuddly, the little boy clutches a teddy bear and the little girl clings to her pink blanket. as mompushes her shopping cart along, the children engage inthe usual sibling rivalry trying to get the most attention.one begs for a toy while the other is hungry and wantsa snack. it looks like an average day for a mom, right?

Wrong. you see that the shopping cart that mom ispushing is full of everything they own. The teddy bearand blanket have both seen better days, and there is nomoney for a toy or an extra snack. although it maysound like fiction, it is actually a cold hard reality. every-day displaced women and their children struggle to sur-vive. and it’s not in a third world country, but right herein our backyards - acworth, marietta, Kennesaw, andPowder springs - none of our communities are immuneto this common reality.

in march of this year, after one point in her life beinghomeless herself, Kim layton took on the task offounding an organization that addresses the specificneeds of displaced women and their children. “Themarion Foundation was founded to give women dignityand a positive future for both themselves and their children,” said ms. layton. Thefoundation is located in metro atlanta and offers not only shelter, but social services

as well. job skills training, recovery programs, career and life coaching are a few of themany services provided.

This august, the marion Foundation will be hostingtheir first annual royal Tea Fashion show on sunday, august 28th at the brookstone Country Club in ac-worth from 12:30 pm -5 pm. don your finest millineryand join them for a delightful afternoon of previewingFall’s finest fashions! like many other non-profit or-ganizations, donations are a key to their success. With-out the generosity of the community, they would not beable to continue with the vision of caring for those whoare in need. sponsorships are still available for this eventin the form of monetary and gift donations and programadvertisements. Products in gift baskets and gift cardsare received graciously for door prizes. businesses willbe acknowledged before and during the door prize seg-ment, and mentioned in the published program. Ticketsare $30.00 each or 2 for $50.00. local vendors will alsobe onsite showcasing their products. The brookstoneCountry Club is located at 5805 brookstone drive inacworth.

The Nurse Practitioner Will See You Now

Healthy Step Pediatrics

healthy steps Pediatrics opened its doors on march 9, 2011. mary hammock, a Certi-fied Pediatric nurse Practioner, owns and manages the practice that cares for childrenfrom birth to 22 years of age. many people have become familiar with nurse Practi-tioners (nPs) over the last decade, although nPs have been around since the 1970’s.

nurse Practitioners work in all fifty states and in many differentsettings, such as the traditional doctor’s office, retail clinics,

emergency rooms, and even in nP-owned medical practices, like healthy steps Pediatrics.

The term, nurse Practitioner, may lead one to wonder whatmakes an nP qualified to manage a patient’s healthcare.

nurse Practitioners are nurses, but they are also so much more.a typical nP has a four-year bachelor’s degree, as well as an rn license. To become annP, a nurse must return to graduate school and complete 1-2 years of coursework, aswell as, 700 clinical hours. These hours are spent in a variety of settings, such as a pri-mary care practice, the emergency room in a hospital setting, as well as,multiple specialists’ offices. Upon completion of their education,nPs take a certification exam in their area of specialty. maryhammock’s specialty is pediatrics.

We asked hammock to give us the inside story about healthysteps Pediatrics and what makes her practice tick. “Unlike adultmedicine, when one of my patients needs care, he or she is alwaysaccompanied by a parent or grandparent and sometimes the entirefamily. and everyone in the exam room is important - important to the patient and im-portant to the patient’s well-being.”

“When a patient comes in for care, i start by gathering a thorough history and perform-ing a physical exam. i may perform labs and then interpret the re-

sults. based on my more than eleven years of experience, i willthen diagnose and recommend a treatment plan that shouldbe effective at restoring the child’s health. i can prescribemedication, and i also take annual pharmacology training to

stay up on the latest recommendations, which is especially im-portant in light of the antibiotic resistance that is emerging.”

hammock practices evidence-based medicine that leads to guidelines that are recom-mended for each specific ailment. “but as you know, not every patient reads the book. This is why i feel it is important to involve the family and the child, when possible, inthe decision making process which results in the best possible outcomes”, she explains.“if i need assistance with a particularly puzzling case, i will turn to my supervising physi-cian for advice. he is available to me at all times for a consultation and between thetwo of us we have more than 30 years of experience in pediatric medicine. and ofcourse, all of the pediatric specialists are extremely helpful in answering questionsor seeing patients through referrals from me.”

Check-ups for hammock are great fun and she receives a great deal of satisfac-tion watching her patients grow. Check-ups include a wide variety of areas suchas nutrition, safety, development, discipline and parenting. in march 2011’s issueof money, dr. roland goertz, an md and president of the american academyof Family Physicians, said nPs are often better trained and more experienced than doc-tors in teaching patients. Check-ups provide an opportunity to help parents raise astrong, safe and well child that aspires to be the best he can be.

hammock encourages West Cobb families to give her a chance. “let me be the “medicalhome” for your children. it is my number one priority to give you great customer serv-

ice, have shorter wait times for appointments, and your familywill get personalized care. as a mother of four young chil-

dren, i understand a hectic life. healthy steps Pediatricsoffers an early morning Walk-in Clinic for those ear aches, sore throats or other ailments that develop in the night and

need to be addressed before rushing off to the rest of yourday. healthy steps Pediatrics is here to help groW healthy

children one step at a time. Please call with any questions orconcerns.”

healthy steps Pediatrics is located at 3911 mary eliza Trace, ste 200 in marietta (on thecorner of due West and acworth due West). office hours are monday- Friday 8:00am-5:00 pm. 678.384.3480

ONLY $20 TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP BUT HAS NEVER BEEN TO A CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE

(Or Hasn’t Been In A Long Time)dear Friend,

if you’ve ever thought about going to a chiro-practor but you’ve hesitated because youweren’t sure it was right for you please readon…

my name is dr. erin arnold. i would like toshow my heartfelt thanks to the communityby celebrating the summer and the month ofaugust by announcing Community healthWeek. it’s my way of saying ThanK yoUto the people who have been so helpful andmean so much. i hope this will benefit youand yours.

i have agreed to “give away” (to anyone whoasks for it) $200 worth of my services for only$20.

That’s right-$20.

in the years that i have been practicing i havehelped many people in the north georgiaarea feel better and live healthier, more pro-ductive lives through chiropractic care. iwould now like to introduce you to the manybenefits my profession has to offer.

For instance, chiropractic care may be able tohelp you if you are suffering from any of thefollowing conditions.

• low back pain

• neck Pain

• migraines

• sciatica

• herniated discs

• degenerated discs

• shoulder/arm pain

and a whole host of other problems, rangingfrom Tmj to carpal tunnel.

These symptoms can be caused whenever thevertebrae in your spine are out of alignment, because this “misalignment” directly affectsyour nervous system.

Fortunately, if you are suffering from suchproblems or similar conditions right now, theymay be relieved or eliminated by proper chiropractic treatment (commonly called “adjustments”).

so if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what is in it for you,now is the best time because…..

right now $20 will get you all the services inormally charge my new patients $200 for!

WHAT DOES THIS INCLUDE?

everything. Take a look at what you’ll get….

• an in-depth private consultation aboutyour health and well being.

• a chiropractic spinal examination….

• a set of specialized X-rays to determineif a misalignment in your spine is caus-ing your pain or symptoms…(noTe: nobody gives these kinds ofX-rays Free. They would usually cost$100)…

• an analysis of your X-rays andspinal exam results so we cansee what needs to be doneto help.

• helpful literature thatshows how your bodyworks and why youexperience pain…

• answers to all yourmost probing ques-tions about chiroprac-tic care and what it cando for you….

The appointment will not takelong at all. and like i said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays).

but now, as a part of this one time offer, youcan come in and find out for certain if youneed chiropractic care and how it can help youeliminate the pain you are feeling.

before you come in, though, you’ll probablywant to know a little bit about me. so let metell you….

MEET THE DOCTOR

Prior to obtaining my doctor of Chiroprac-tic degree at life University in marietta,ga, i received my b.s. degree in biology. iam nationally and state board certified in Chiro-practic and Physiotherapy.

i have happily donated my time to organiza-tions such as mUsT ministries, yWCa (domestic Violence shelter for Women),and ross memorial, just name a few.

i am very proud to be a wife and mother of2 beautiful daughters and a member of lib-erty Church in marietta, ga.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLY WORK

absolutely! When you come in i’ll provideyou with studies that show why chiropractic isa preferred method of treatment. but whatprovides the best “proof ” on how well chiro-practic works is what our patients say about it.

Back To School!august rings “back to school” for Cobb County and metro atlanta kids this month.and boy, oh boy, this always brings a “backpack” full of excitement for the entirefamily! The following are tips to get you and your children back in the groove andready to make this school year the best ever!

Reading for Fun: reading is a basic survival skill in today’s society. by readingto your children and teaching them to enjoy reading at an early age will not only en-hance their grades, but reading will give them a lifetime of enjoyment. setting aside20 minutes a day for reading will get them into a routine and prepare them for therigors of homework throughout the year. if your child’s summer vacation has notincluded reading, it’s not too late to establish this routine during the weeks leadingup to school. it may be difficult to launch at first, but by incorporating that 20 min-utes into the days ahead you will start getting his mindset in the right place.

First Day Anxieties: The first day of school can often bring out overwhelmingfeelings for kids, especially the younger ones. To make this day easier, it’s always agood idea to attend the Teacher “meet and greet” sessions that area schools holdthe week before school begins. your child can see where his or her classroom is,who the other students in the class will be, and what supplies will be needed. duringthis time you can also discuss with the teacher your child’s dislikes, fears, allergies orany other issues the teacher should be aware of. by preparing for that first day ofschool, your child will feel more confident and less likely to suffer from the nerv-ousness and anxiety that often rears its ugly head on that first day.

Good-byes: Try to set up a ritual or routine when sending your child off to school.doing the same thing every day, beginning with their wake-up time, breakfast, and

getting them out the door helps to ease theiranxieties. Kids love routinewhether they realize it or not.always be positive when sayinggoodbye to your child and es-tablish your trust with a quickkiss and hug.

After School Activities: Kids loveto do something after school or have a plan inmind for what this time will mean to them.homework time should be immediately estab-lished beginning with the first week of school. ex-perts suggest that homework should be started whenthey return home from school. once that it is out ofthe way, your child should be free to play withfriends, engage in sporting activities or other areasof interest. getting homework out of the way willfree up the rest of their day to relax and enjoy thethings they like to do best.

Bedtime: younger children need to have an es-tablished bedtime to ensure that they get adequate restto prepare them for the next day’s challenges. Parentsideally should schedule some quiet time with theirkids, time for baths, reading and snuggling before theysend their kids off to their rooms. This can be chal-lenging when both parents work and have busy sched-ules of their own, but rituals and routines allowchildren to feel more secure and less distracted andready to learn the next day.

by keeping these simple tips in mind and practice, your child should be prepared to make this thebest year ever!

having self-confidence is wonderful and a positive quality to successfully nav-igate life. self-confidence is a wonderful asset. it allows us to get past fearsand doubts and take control of life and decisions. Those with confidencehave a positive and optimistic attitude that is easy to be around. otherstypically view a confident person as dependable and admirable. however,as often true, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. over-confidence is a weakness and most would agree that arrogance is unde-sirable. There are significant differences between confidence andarrogance.

Confidence is not a belief that one is always right or a sense of being unable tofail. True confidence welcomes alternative perspectives and opinions. a confident personrarely will be found lecturing or preaching to others on how they are wrong. believing you arealways right and unable to accept influence from others can make one obnoxious to be around.Confidence is being willing to be wrong and knowing you’ll be ok if you are. a truly self-confi-dent person is able to show vulnerability and admit to past mistakes.

both the confident and arrogant person is aware of personal areas of strength and ability. however, a confident person has little difficulty seeing other’s gifts and strengths while the arro-gant cannot. additionally a confident person does not insist on the adoration of others for theirskills or abilities. People who are self-confident show it with their actions, not by their words.self -confidence is knowledge of ability while arrogance insists on sharing successes with others. There is a quiet calm in the truly confident that the arrogant do not possess. if you find yourselfconstantly trying to impress friends, family or others with your skills and abilities, you have crossedthe line into arrogance.

Confidence and arrogance come from different sources. arrogance is rooted in insecurity – adefense from feelings of weakness that are unacceptable and unclaimed. an arrogant persongenerally has a skewed view of the world and a warped understanding of themselves. however,a confident person can accept their weaknesses or faults with grace – even though they may notlike them.

arrogant people build themselves up by putting others down - to “win”. buddhismasserts that arrogance is to judge one’s self-worth by comparison with others.

arrogant people feel good about themselves only through affirming their su-periority to others. genuinely confident people feel great about themselveswithout comparing themselves with others. arrogant people tend to blufftheir way to success and often have difficulty listening to others. This personwill avoid risks or blame others or circumstances if things do not work out

as expected.

arrogant people can and often do have successes but there are significant costs.relationships are often shallow and superficial or strained. additionally, professional

successes can be fragile due to difficulties in accepting guidance and feedback and impaired abil-ities to accept and learn from mistakes.

While not always arrogant, some are plagued with an overconfidence that can be problematic. This is most typically seen with inexperience and immaturity. by definition, an overconfidentperson tends to overestimate the chances of success of an endeavor and underestimate the risks.because of the self-deception involved, overconfidence tends to make people unable to makeeffective and successful decisions.

strive for honest self-acceptance and nurture self-confidence. beware the pitfalls of crossingthe line into overconfidence or arrogance. as with most things in life, the healthy place is alwayswith balance in the middle.

“An apology is only egotism’s wrong side out.”

Fitness Myth Debunked: You Must Stretch Before You Exercise Jason GoggansWe’ve all seen it, the guy at the gym stretching feverishly before beginning his workout or run. he isusually wearing a headband and or wrist bands. his socks are pulled up to his knees. he’s got onefoot on the wall doing some variation of a hamstring stretch. The stretching session usually lastsabout 1 minute then it’s off to workout. he does this every day yet never seems to gain any flexibility.headband and socks aside, what do you think is wrong with this guy? Why isn’t his flexibility im-proving? Why is he even stretching? should he continue to stretch before he exercises?

These are great questions and i will supply the answers. it was thought for years that stretching beforeexercise was imperative in preventing injury and maximizing performance. however, recent researchshows that stretching prior to exercise is not only unnecessary but can also be detrimental. in fact, ac-cording to a recent story by aP medical writer maria Cheng, CdC experts who reviewed more than100 stretching studies found that “people who stretched before exercise were no less likely to sufferinjuries such as a pulled muscle, which the increased flexibility from stretching is supposed to prevent.”

below are the top four reasons why pre-exercise stretching should be avoided as well as tips on whenyou should stretch (and yes, you should stretch).

stretching does not Prevent injury-as stated above, pre-exercise stretching has no effect on yourchances of getting injured. injury prevention is the main reason most people stretch in the first place.Through no fault of their own, those who stretch prior to exercise have been doing so in vain. Theywould be better suited saving those 5-10 minutes and using them toward extra exercise. also, notonly does pre-exercise stretching not prevent injury it can actually cause it.

Pre-exercise stretching Can Cause injury-stretching a cold muscle is like a taking a rubber band outof the freezer and stretching it. What do you think would happen?? snaP! Well, the same goes foryour cold muscles. now, they may not actually snap but stretching can cause micro-tears in the musclewhich can lead to injury during your workout. stretching also causes instability in certain joints whichcan also lead to injury.

stretching is not The same as Warming Up-Unfortunately too many people believe that stretchingand warming up are one in the same. Warming up implies that the heart rate is considerably elevatedand the all important blood flow to the muscle is increased. stretching does neither of these andtherefore should not be considered a warm-up. Warming up should consist of 5-10 minutes of lightcardio followed by 5 minutes of light dynamic exercises such as body weight squats, pushups, bodyweight lunges, burpees, mountain climbers etc.

Pre-exercise stretching Can impair Performance-some may wonder if it is okay to stretch after warm-ing up first. While this makes sense on the surface, stretching in any way prior to your workout can

impair performance. The same micro-tearing that increases injury also impairs performance. Thesemicro-tears cause inflammation, which in turn makes muscles less pliable. When the muscle fibers areimpaired, your muscle force production will be impaired. if you are an athlete then a decrease in per-formance is obviously not a good thing, but even the average person looking to lose weight will sufferif performance during exercise is decreased. a decrease in performance means that your workoutswill be shorter and/or less intense which will negatively affect the speed and quality of your results.

having said all of this, i do believe in the concept of stretching; but only if it’s done correctly. sincewe now know that stretching a cold muscle is bad, it would make sense that stretching a warm muscleis the way to go. as a result, you should save your stretching for after your workout and cool down.Cooling down first is important so your heart rate has a chance to decrease. bending over and stretch-ing with an elevated heart rate can lead to light headedness and can even cause you to pass out.

When stretching after a workout and cool down be sure to follow the following guidelines:

• Stretch slow and controlled. Never bounce.

• Hold a stretch for 10-15 seconds (never more)

• Stretch to a point of discomfort, never pain

• Breath throughout your stretch (Never Hold Your Breath)

• Focus on the muscle you are stretching. Be sure you feel it where you’re supposedto. Don’t let your mind wander.

one of the worst traps awriter can make is tothrow thinly veiled ad-vice around in a columndisguised as quaint hu-morous anecdotesabout their children, pets or wives. The rea-son this trap is so terri-ble is that when youtend to give advice to

others in monthly installed platitudes, they tend to be-lieve you actually practice what you preach.

Well, i am here to say i have neVer fallen into that trap and everything i writemight as well be carved in stone because of its “truthiness.” That is why it is sodifficult for me to turn the pen around and actually ask for some parental advicethis time, rather than dole it out.

The problem i am having is with “potty mouth.” yes, the age old dilemma, thateach parent faces when their children begin speaking like their spouses. i won’t sayi have not seen it coming, but when it is thrown at you with such force and furyyou stand there looking at your precious progeny and think, “When did you becomea sailor?” it happened the other day in our minivan when i had taken the girls outfor their weekly bribe of ice cream and my oldest’s waffle cone disintegrated in herhand and filled her lap.

This is a family magazine so i won’t write the word she said, but i will spell it pho-

netically. she said, “s.T.a.y.e.g.U.n.” i know filthy right!? as soon as she said ither younger sister gasped in shock and i could see through her pleading eyes in therear-view mirror, “Please dad, don’t kill her.” The other one, knowing full well theweight of her utterance, looked sideways at her sister as if to say, “ you don’t thinkhe heard me do you?”

The car got awfully quiet after that and we only exchanged furtive glances at oneanother until we got home and the girls were instructed to get cleaned up and gostraight to bed. now, here is the part where i need advice. i have scoured the in-ternet, dictionary and local locker rooms hoping to find out what this word that isso horrible that both my daughters believe it to mean certain death if spoken aloud, even means. i am certainly no choir boy. i lived in a fraternity house for three ofmy seven years of college, so i have heard a few things, but for the life of me ithink this word is so bad that no one eVer mentions it?

it must be the conglomeration of every expletive ever spoken and must conjuresuch evil when pronounced that no one, not even the pervs of cyber space, willspeak of it. but i must know. otherwise the punishment they get will never fit thecrime.

The only other option is to let them continue to believe that their little curse wordis the worst thing they can say in the hopes that it becomes the only curse wordthey say, or ignore it, and pray they stay this cute forever.

YELLOWSTONE REVISITED

When i was just a small child, my dad had a goal for his children that few fathers shared.his goal was for us to see all of the natural wonders of the United states of americabefore we were grown. so, when i was 13 years old, we took off from new york in his 4- seater Cessna 180 to visit all of the spots across the Usa that he wanted us to see. “seeamerica First” was his motto! and that we did!

We visited many wonderful places on that trip, but my favorite stop was yellowstone na-tional Park. We flew into West yellowstone Village, which at that time was just a few cabinsin the woods. each evening we were visited by deer, raccoons, and grizzlies trying to eatthe remains of people’s picnics and leftovers. in those days, the annual tourist count ofvisitors to yellowstone was about one million people in 12 months.

Today in the summer months, the count is about one million visitors each month. Westyellowstone is now a bustling town and the main entrance to the park. There are manyrestaurants, tour companies, trinket shops, outfitters for camping supplies, etc. The streetsare lined with rVs and rental cars. english is no longer the language of choice. yellowstoneis now like the United nations of national Parks, everyone grappling for a chance to seeyellowstone Falls, old Faithful geyser and more.

yellowstone national Park is wonderful any season of the year, but this year, totally un-daunted by the 4th of july crowds, i visited the park on the holiday weekend. There werelots of visitors, all having lots of fun. The Park has wonderful hiking trails, great sites, an-imals galore and traffic jams of people looking at the animals. There is even a daily news-paper called yellowstone Today listing a number of things to do in the Park. This papergives you ideas on where to shoot the best pictures, safety around the animals, visitor ed-ucation about geysers, where to hike and bike and even where to fish. it also includesscenic pullouts along park roads where you can observe the natural beauty of the park, aswell as camping areas where you can park an rV or even pitch your own tent if you wishto.

in the old days, you could either stay in West yellowstone as my family did, or stay in oneof the rustic lodges within the park. accommodations were limited then, each with min-imal services and few restaurants. Today, there are great places to stay in Canyon Villagenear yellowstone Falls, mammoth hot springs alongside the famous bubbling pools ofhydrothermal vents, the old Faithful lodge which has now grown to epic proportionswith scores of hotel rooms, restaurants and gift shops. in addition, there are accommo-dations at roosevelt lodge near the north entrance of the Park and the lake hotel nearyellowstone lake. The lake hotel even features boat tours and has dock rentals as wellif you’d like to bring your own houseboat. some, but not all of these hotels are availableall year long in order to accommodate winter visitors as well as summer visitors.

even the 4th of july crowds could not darken the beautiful days, sunshine, and blue skies, scenic vistas and natural wonders that are there to take advantage of while at yellowstone.i can now say i have been lucky enough to have re- visited yellowstone. summer, winter, spring or fall is a good time to visit one of our country’s greatest assets...yoUr nationalpark.......yellowstone!

by Brooke Merrillmost of us have that pesky front parlor that we have neither the budget nor the energy todeal with. The space ends up being a catch-all for the old college furniture or the clutterthat we can’t seem to part with. so how can we spruce up a space that is the first thing ourvisitors see when they walk in the front door? making that useless space useful is not ascostly or time consuming as you may think!

First, decide how you would like to use the space. are you in desperate need of a playroomor an office? maybe you have always wanted a wine tasting room or bar room to retire toafter an entertaining dinner. regardless, with a few hours of legwork and a few more hoursof arranging, you can turn that space into a functional dream come true.

if you are contemplating a playroom or a home office, i strongly suggest hiring a contractorto install French doors as the grand entrance to the space. That way, you can show off theroom when the toys have been put away or you can easily shut the doorto keep all that annoying office paperwork out of eyesight.

as for furniture arrangement in an office or playroom,i recommend having a few pieces of floating fur-niture to make the space look larger. Putting tallbookcases against the walls will be great forstorage as well as making the room seemtaller and more spacious. balance thatwith a desk (for an office) or a craft table(for a playroom) in the middle of theroom to create an anchor for the eye.i would also suggest using a large 8 x10 rug to fill in the space and addcolor to compliment the fun acces-sories you choose for the bookcasesand desktop.

a playroom could also support cus-tom bookcases on either side of awindow with an adorable window seatin between. add some task lightingand you will have the perfect space foryour little ones to practice their birdwatching or curl up and read a book. youshould also tuck a small comfy chair in a cor-ner with a small lamp table and lamp. once thespace is complete, you will be surprised by howmany family members might want to use the space atany given time, so the more seating the better for gather-ing and playing games.

last, but not least, i always suggest adding window treatments to any room. if you aregoing for a more elegant look for a home office, solid silk panels on rods with rings lookgreat. Pair those with a dark bamboo roman shade to complete a more masculine design.on the other hand, if you are attempting a playful design for a children’s playroom, considerhaving custom box valances made in a fun, cheerful fabric. be careful to use colors thatflow with the connecting rooms (usually a dining room across the hall or a large familyroom). by selecting one of the brighter colors in the connecting rooms, you can play it upwith a whimsical fabric for the playroom. again, you can pair a lighter bamboo shade withthe valances for this design idea to complete the look.

no matter the function of the space, i strongly suggest finishing the front rooms of yourhome. There is a certain pride you will feel when opening your front door to neighborsand friends when you have those finishing touches to show off. by using interesting art-work and furniture, you will also give your guests some conversation starters as they enterthe house, so set your budget, do your research, and get started!

Finding your unique look whiletransitioning to college life…

by Maria SullivanI am often asked about the differences between college fashion and high school fashiontrends. Understanding the differences between high school fashion and college fashion isn’tthat difficult – in some ways they’re really similar, but in others, they’re miles apart! Beforeyou go shopping, let me show you how to bring your high school wardrobe to college:

• Know what to throw leave behind your high school t-shirts and sweatshirts. ifyou do decide to bring them, don’t wear them outside of your room. Time to move ongirls…..

• Go through your wardrobe and find the pieces that are the most “you”…the clothes and accessories that are always a “go-to” for your uniqueness. stand out inthe new crowd with your own look.

• Denim, denim, denim denim is the number one thing you wear in college!

• Invest in cute dorm wear This is especially important if you’re living on campus.you spend tons of time in your dorm studying (we hope) so get some cute comfy clothesto lounge around it.

• When in doubt about an item, leave it home you may think you needeverything, however space is limited (especially in the dorm), and if you need it later, youcan always have it shipped to you.

• Consider the weather where you’ll be going to school Check your col-lege town’s weather forecast and pack according to that region (if you’re going away).

• Buy some new things that represent the new you There is really noneed to spend a lot of money, however be selective and buy some new items that get youexcited for your new adventure in life. College is a big change from high school girls!

Ok, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s discuss the reality of college fashion.

College, there are fewer rules and restrictions. YEAH!

1. The main difference between fashion in high school and fashion in college is that no oneis telling you what to do anymore. shhhhhh…… The freedom that comes with going tocollege is so much fun – you can really begin to figure yourself out, and with that, you candevelop your own unique style!

2. College frees you to be yourself without judgment -unlike in high school where girls tendto be “clicky.” no one really judges you based on what you wear in college, and morethan likely they’ll think you’re interesting if you dress differently.

3. in college, you can become who you want to be.

College is the opportunity to start off with a clean slate, create a new image and recreate you! sowhat if you were a tomboy in high school? if being at the height of chic has been your dream, now is your chance! and if you were the one who always wore designer duds and you’re lookingfor a different look, channel your inner hippie chick and let your hair down.

This isn’t about trying to be someone you’re not; it’s about becoming the person you want to beand expressing yourself in a creative way. have fun with it! ladies, this is your time to shine, bebold, be unique and be true to yourself – the one trend that will never go out of style.

a year has gone by since the sudden, cardiac arrest death of local Pow-der springs resident, jeff bradford. For his son, Tyler and wife shirley, his memory lives on daily and the loss of this athletic, loving husbandand father seems no less a tragedy than it was in april of 2010 whenhe suddenly passed away. bradford was to all appearances a healthy 42year old that was actively involved with his son’s football activities andan avid tennis player. sudden Cardiac arrest (sCd) ended his life waytoo soon. according to the american heart association, sCd occurswithin minutes after the symptoms present themselves. only about 5% of sCd victims survive because medical treatment must be admin-istered within minutes to jumpstart their hearts. both adults and chil-dren are susceptible to sCd. a genetic connection has been found byresearchers in many conditions. “it’s not a simple test that can saywhether or not you have this,” said allison ellison, a nurse with Chil-dren’s healthcare of atlanta. “but once you know that it’s in your fam-ily, then you should be checked out immediately. There are genetic tests.in some cases, they can find it on an eKg or echocardiogram.”

Friends, family and tennis enthusiasts are slated to gather again for the2nd annual jefferson memorial Tennis tournament to be held at lostmountain Tennis Center on dallas highway. The tournament will fea-ture men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The entry fee perplayer is $25 and both winners and finalists will receive prizes. Tourna-ment proceeds will go the hillgrove high school grid iron Club andthis year’s tournament will include participation from mceachern high

school. This year’s event will again include free training on hands onlyCPr and how to Use the aed, from alison ellison of Children’shealth Care of atlanta. she is the Coordinator for Project s.a.V.e(sudden Cardiac death: awareness Vision for Prevention and educa-tion). This is a program for schools that saves lives and currently in-cludes Kell, Pope, lassiter, Wheeler, harrison and oakwood in CobbCounty. They have saved 29 lives thus far in georgia schools.

Kayal Dermatology and Medspa

What is a medical spa?

a medical spa or medspa is a spa which is overseen by a licensed, board certified physician.a medspa is designed to provide anti-aging and skin rejuvenation procedures in a spa at-mosphere. however, since a medical doctor is overseeing or performing these procedures,a medspa can offer more extensive procedures that are more effective than those providedin a simple spa setting. dr john Kayal and jaime harvey, esthetician now offer these pro-cedures to men, women and teens at Kayal dermatology and medspa.

What types of services are offered at a medspa?

a wide variety of services are offered at Kayal dermatol-ogy and medspa. services include laser treatments for

brown spots, redness, wrinkles, overall skin tighten-ing and skin rejuvenation. Chemical peels, micro-

dermabrasion, and plasma energy therapy areavailable for exfoliation and resurfacing of theskin. For deep wrinkles there is an entire lineof fillers and inject-ables, such as botox andjuvederm. dr. john Kayal, md also per-forms corrective eyelid surgery should youconsider this level of treatment. solutionsto acne are also featured with proceduresto open and clear pores and lighten darkspots. surgical options for acne scarring arealso available. Whether you are looking tosimply refresh your skin or address a moreserious condition, Kayal dermatology and

medspa offers a wide range of treatment andsolutions.

What should I look for in a medspa?

When choosing a medspa, there are several points thatyou may wish to consider. Though a medspa is typically

owned by a physician, the doctor may rarely be on site.

dr. Kayal supervises and works closely with his staff on a daily basis to assure the mosteffective treatment and patient satisfaction. The qualifications of the esthetician are alsoimportant. jaime harvey is certified within the state of georgia for all aesthetic proce-dures and treatments Kayal dermatology and medspa offer. since skin types vary inlevels of sensitivity and pigmentation, it is important that a medspa has the appropriatetools and products to suit a patient’s personal needs. Kayal dermatology and medspaoffers a complementary skin consultation by the physician or the esthetician to assureoptimum results.

If you are interested to see what a medspa can offer you, simply contact Kayal Dermatology and Medspa. (770) 426 -7177 nwgadermatologists.com

almost everyone loves pets; unfortunately this oftendoes not include the home buyer that is buying yourhome. i’m not sure why this is, but inevitably this isusually the case. homeowners that own pets have ahard time imagining that everyone doesn't share theirlove for pets. While this is often hard to deal with, itis important to get top dollar for your home.

here are a several reasons why a buyer might notwant to look at a home where a pet lives.

• Nervousness

• Allergies

• Pets are not always predictable

• Some animals are very possessive ofthere space and owner

not everyone grew up with a family pet. many people suffer from pet allergies, and these folks will walk into your home and immediately know if a pet lives with you. it’s impor-tant to be sensitive to this issue when selling your home.

i know it is a hard pill to swallow, however during the period you are trying to sell your home youmay need to make arrangements to remove your pets during showings. you may even considermaking arrangements while your home is on the market to board your pets or arrange to havethem stay with a friend or family member. i realize that boarding can be expensive, but hopefullythis inconvenience will be short lived. again the goal is to get top dollar for your house.

if this is not an option and you want to minimize the objections and nuisance factors, you shouldtake the following steps to overcome the negatives associated with pets.

• Make sure litter boxes are cleaned daily to avoid smells

• Make sure doggie potty pads are removed

• Make sure that your home does not smell like your pets - nothingturns a buyer off more than pet smells in a home

• Carpet and pet stains - Hire a professional to remove stains. Buyers will spot them and form an unfavorable opinion

• If the stains cannot be removed, the flooring should be replaced

often home owners become immune to pet orders. Cat urine is actually the worst and most of-fensive smell. ask a neighbor to come over and do a whiff test. i don’t recommend using airfresheners, as prospective buyers will sense that you are trying to cover something up. also peoplewith allergies will react to these odors.

The following are suggestions if you decide to remove the signs of your pet in your home:

• Do not put photos online showing your cat asleep on the bed

• Seal up doggie doors

• Put away food and doggie bowls

• Put away doggie toys and dog beds

• Pick up cat trees and other signs of cat paraphernalia

• Remove photos of your pets from walls and tables

• Pack up all cages, carriers and all other telltale signs

if you cannot remove your pets, place them into a carrier and attach a note warning buyers not todisturb them or place their hands or fingers in the cage. animals are unpredictable when strangersenter in your home. animals are very much like humans and become very nervous when they arefrightened.

Keep in mind if you take the advice of your real estate agent, neither you nor your pet should beinconvenienced for long. remember to price your home to sell, and do the things that are askedto guarantee top dollar and a quick sell. The key is to work together to sell your home quickly.

Meet the “Hungry Bullies”,L-R, Harry age 4,Dixie age 3,Guinny age 9.The bowl says itall, but you cantell these guysdon't miss many meals!!

have you ever felt really tempted to grab something out of the medicine cabinet when yourpet isn’t feeling well? ever actually gone through with it? how about dietary supplements?during exams, i’m frequently told things like, “i’ve started giving him abC for his arthritis”,or, “he had a queasy stomach last week so i gave him some XyZ”. occasionally, either be-cause the client had done their research or by lucky coincidence, what they gave their petwasn’t harmful- and once in a while it actually helped. often, though, that’s not the case.several of the most common human medications are quite toxic to pets, and even those thatare not toxic in proper doses become so when given improperly. i’ll talk about just a fewthis month.

The ones i hear about most frequently are the over the counter pain medications- aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. all belong to a class called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories(nsaids), and when given in proper doses (and to the proper species) can be quite helpful.however, dogs process these medications more slowly than humans do, and cats more slowlystill; they also may have side effects from long-term use. Thismeans that what appears to be a normal or very low dose canactually be a severe overdose for an animal. acetamino-phen, in particular, is deadly for cats because it causesa blood disorder that robs blood cells of their ca-pacity to carry oxygen. There is no safe dose ofacetaminophen for a cat.

Though these medications are usually onhand at home, do not take the chanceof causing severe health prob-lems- ask your veterinarian if thereis a proper dose of the medicationyou are considering. There are nsaids available justfor dogs and some can be used off-label for cats, but even those require monitoring if usedon a frequent basis.

on the topic of nsaids- did you know that Pepto-bismol contains the active ingredientin aspirin? again, it’s tempting to give Pepto when your dog is vomiting, but in too-largedoses it can actually cause problems. The newer Peptomax formulation has twice the amountof that active ingredient, which obviously makes it twice as toxic. in some cases you maybe given a dosage of Pepto to use, by your veterinarian. in that case, make sure you’re pur-chasing the proper type.

Certain human dietary supplements are very safe in the proper dosages. i frequently rec-ommend fish oils and over the counter glucosamine to clients. others are less safe, andthere is particular concern with homeopathic medications- not because alternative medicineis dangerous, but because many of those compounds are not clearly labeled, and the relativeconcentrations of their ingredients are often unclear. i have had clients who have giventheir pets herbal supplements based on the advice of their own naturopath. i would notrecommend this, as cats and dogs are very different biologically from humans, and fromeach other, and a trained human naturopath may be quite unaware of these differences. anumber of veterinarians in the area practice alternative medicine, either exclusively or incombination with traditional therapies. if that’s something that interests you, consult oneof them before embarking on a course of treatment or supplementation.

Plenty of other human medications occasionally make it into the mouths of pets, either in-tentionally or by indiscriminate tablet chewing. a lot of the time it’s nothing to worry about, but some drugs are quite toxic, even in amounts that would seem to have little effect on ahuman being. if your pet is acting strangely or showing unexplained gastrointestinal symp-toms, run through what’s within reach, and give your veterinarian a call (or, after hours, theemergency clinic) to see if it warrants a trip into the clinic. When medicating your pet, being overcautious is a good thing!

is something bugging you? more importantly, with summer in full bloom, is something bugging yourtrees? if you don’t know, it’s time to find out - take a look around your yard because insects and disease

can seriously harm trees and plants.“having trees at home can bring a touch of nature to any yard, but homeowners need to

know that sometimes nature has to be protected from itself,” said jim skiera, executivedirector of the international society of arboriculture (isa). “a hostile environment

and the presence of insects and disease can seriously harm trees and plants.”Trees and other landscape plants need light, water, and nutrients, but too much or toolittle of any of these resources can cause plant stress. severe stress can weaken a tree’sresistance to diseases and insects.

Preventing Insects and Disease“Prevention is about being observant,” said john lloyd, assistant professor of ar-boriculture at the University of idaho. What should you look for? early symptoms of problems usually appear in the spring.

dying branches in the upper part of the canopy (called dieback), yellowing, and flaggingcan be symptoms of diseases and environmental stress, while leaf drop or leaf spots

are common symptoms of foliar disease. What should you do if you notice problems?lloyd says the best first course of action is to tend to the obvious. Trees in overly dry areas

should be watered. Compacted soil should be nourished with organic mulch to reduce thesoil’s bulk density and to provide slow-release nutrients to surrounding trees.

“Knowledge of the tree’s history can also be an important tool in fighting disease,” lloyd said. For ex-ample, if a tree has a history of foliar disease, preventative sprays can be applied to reduce the chancesof disease recurrence. homeowners can also benefit from plant healthcare plans, where professionalsdo on-site inspections to ensure tree and plant health.

DiseasesTree diseases are caused by infectious or living organisms such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria. disorders, which can exhibit disease-like symptoms, are caused by noninfectious or nonliving agents such as nutrientdeficiencies, temperature extremes, vandalism, or pollutants.diseases develop when:

• a pathogen is present (disease-causing agent).• a plant is vulnerable to that particular pathogen.• The environment is conducive to disease development.

Insectsoften considered a “secondary problem” to environmental stress, insects can retard plant growth, weakentree structure, and spread plant diseases by feeding on trees.

• Chewing insects, like beetles and caterpillars, eat leaves, flowers, and twigs. discoloration and un-even or broken edges are signs that chewing insects might be present.

• sucking insects, like aphids and mealy bugs, feed on sap within the plant. damage is indicated bythe discoloration, drooping, and wilting of leaves, and the presence of honeydew.

• boring insects, like bark beetles, feed beneath the bark of the tree as larvae. most borers are at-tracted to, and successfully attack, stressed trees.

While some insects can threaten tree health, many are helpful and actually rid trees of dangerous orharmful insects.“just because you find an insect on a plant does not mean that’s the one causing the damage,” said Fredmiller, joliet junior College in joliet, il. “For example, many people think the lady bird beetle is harmful, but they actually eat aphids, which are the insects that really harm trees and plants.”

Diagnosis and TreatmentCorrect diagnosis of plant health problems requires careful examination of the situation. The isa offersthese tips to aid in your assessment:

• accurately identify the plant. insects and disease are plant-specific, limiting the number of sus-pected pests.

• look for a pattern of abnormality. Compare the affected plant with others on the site, especiallythose of the same species.

• Carefully examine the landscape. The history of the property and the adjacent land may revealmany problems.

• examine the roots. note their color. brown or black roots may signal problems.• Check the trunk and branches. Wounds in the trunk can provide entrances for pathogens and

wood-rotting organisms.• note the position and appearance of affected leaves. dead leaves at the top of the tree are usually

the result of environmental or mechanical root stress. Twisted or curled leaves may indicate viralinfection, insect feeding, or exposure to herbicides. Treatment depends on the particular insector disease problem, the species of plant or tree affected, the extent of the problem, factors spe-cific to the environment, and local regulations. homeowners who have doubts about how toproceed should consult a tree care professional for advice.
