YEAR 6: Summer Term 2019 Our topic will be: Rainforests and The Mayans. Our whole class text will be ‘WonderStruck’. LITERACY Our key text will be WonderStruck. Our learning will include: A travel leaflet on Gunflint Lake; A free verse monologue poem; An informaon text about America in 1970. READING Reading tasks will include: reading and discussing our class text; comprehension tasks to deepen understanding of the whole class texts being studied; reading and answering quesons based on a personal book chosen from the reading scheme; reading a variety of books at home (for 10 minutes 3 x per week). HISTORY / Geography We will be discovering the ancient Mayans and the impact that they have had on the modern world. The pupils will also learn about Gods and different aspects of Mayan culture. We will also explore the human and physical features of rivers and rainforests. RE We will be thinking about what religions say to us when life gets hard. MATHEMATICS We will be spending longer on each area of Maths in order to gain depth of understanding. We are covering: Stascs Geometry: Properes of shape Invesgaons ART / DT The children will use clay to make Mayan sculptures, and draw artwork in the style of Henri Rousseau . SCIENCE We will be studying: Living things and their environments; Evoluon and inheritance. This will be a taught through child-led invesgaons, praccal experiments and teacher-led acvies. HOMEWORK This is set every Friday and due in by the following Friday. Spelling sheet (tested the following Friday); Maths work sheet (linked directly to skills taught that week); Reading (as menoned previously). Please encourage your child to give 100% effort to homework. PSHE We will be working on understanding our relaonships, feelings and emoons. We will also connue teaching Spring Fever. Our topic will be: Rainforests and The Mayans. Our whole class text will be ‘WonderStruck’.

LITERACY

Our key text will be WonderStruck. Our learning will include:
