2018 Report to Investors:HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

OUR TIME TO SHINE

OCC IS COMMITTED TO EMPOWERING OUR STUDENTS TO SUCCEED AND ADVANCING OUR COMMUNITY.

The mission of the Oakland Community College Foundation is to obtain and allocate financial support to advance the mission and goals of Oakland Community College.

Richard A. Berkfield, Jr. Chair, Board of Directors Oakland Community College Foundation

Peter M. Provenzano, Jr. Chancellor Oakland Community College

DEAR DONORS, COLLEAGUES and FRIENDS,At Oakland Community College, we care deeply about our students and the community. We are so very grateful you do too. Through your empowering philanthropy, the work of the OCC Foundation continued to shine brightly in 2018.

The Foundation has embraced OCC’s new vision of Excellence in All We Do to become the College of Choice, Partner of Choice, and Employer of Choice. With your help, we have expanded traditional scholarships, and found new ways of empowering our students to succeed and advancing our community. Consider just three examples:

Donors to CREST enabled our Fire Training Institute to customize a new fire truck, perfectly suited to the needs of our future fire fighters.

Donors to the Provenzano Empowerment Fund are supporting a faculty-led project to reduce the cost of textbooks for our students.

Donors to the Study Abroad Scholarship are giving students international experiences, never before in their reach, toward our new Global Literacy Endorsement.

We know there is no higher calling than to provide a relevant and affordable education that leads to a better quality of life. Your support in 2018 empowered the OCC Foundation to directly improve the lives of hundreds of students, and through them our whole community.

In the pages of this report, we celebrate the many people and organizations who contributed to our success last year, and share some of the accomplishments they made possible. We are grateful for your support, and honored to highlight your role in our success.

It was Our Time to Shine…and we did!

Sincerely,

FROM the CHANCELLOR and CHAIR

10 TIMES the FOUNDATION SHINED1 The Bottom Line: Donors gave $537,508 in 2018, our best year since 2001. We improved on 2017

results by over $92,000, a 26% increase.

2 Alumni Support: Our efforts to engage alumni in philanthropy expanded with the help of program faculty and staff. Culinary Arts, Dental Hygiene, Library Tech, Nursing, and Paralegal graduates responded by giving the equivalent of 12 new scholarships.

3 Employee & Retiree Giving: In all, 62 faculty and 64 staff members gave $74,448 last year, twice the recent average. Retired employees also increased their support, with 73 retirees giving $85,125. In all, current and former employees provided about 30% of the total given.

4 The Garden Party: Southeast Michigan’s premier event in support of the skilled trades celebrated its 10th anniversary. Over 600 guests and 70 sponsors – a new record – contributed toward scholarships and program support, netting over $116,000. The Detroit News named TGP among the best charity events in 2018. (see page 13)

5 Communications: We launched the “Six Good Things” email newsletter this year. The quarterly message celebrates notable gifts and recent accomplishments. Circulation expanded to over 2,100 alumni, donors, and friends by the fourth quarter.

6 Chancellor’s Inauguration: Our sponsors completely underwrote the ceremony and reception publicly inaugurating OCC’s ninth chief executive, allowing us to welcome over 300 guests to celebrate with us. Well-wishers created a new endowed scholarship in honor of Chancellor Peter Provenzano. (see page 12)

7 Student Success Fund: Many donors supported the Student Success Fund, which provides timely help to enrolled students in a financial emergency. Following a redesign of the program, response time fell from two weeks to 24 hours. Recipients received just-in-time help with transportation and housing.

8 Scholarship Awards: With applicants up significantly, we awarded 381 scholarships totaling over $258,000 in 2018 (Winter, Summer, and Fall). Scholarship distributions increased by over $50,000 and nearly 50 awards compared to 2017. Each recipient expressed their gratitude in a personal thank-you letter to their sponsor.

9 Named Scholarships: Sponsors created 24 new scholarships this year. The new funds honor current and retired faculty and staff, memorialize family and friends, and support students of every background and circumstance. Our scholarship sponsors continue a long tradition of helping our students through philanthropy. (see page 2)

10 Legacy Society: We welcomed three new members into the Legacy Society. The Society recognizes those who have made OCC a part of their personal legacy through their estate plan. (see page 14)

LEGACY SOCIETY

LEGACY SOCIETYThe Legacy Society is our way of recognizing supporters who have made OCC and the students we serve a part of their personal legacy. Members demonstrate their foresight and generosity by naming the OCC Foundation as a beneficiary of their will or trust; insurance policy; bank, investment, or retirement account; or other estate-planning vehicles.

Membership in the Legacy Society involves no dues or obligations. It simply allows us to thank these donors for the plans they have made.

Dr. LeRoy & Mrs. Carole Salowich are among the

Foundation’s Top 10 individual donors by lifetime giving, with generous

scholarship support for veterans and first responders.

In 2018, they also joined the Legacy Society, adding the Foundation as a beneficiary of

their estate. Roy was a founding faculty member at Highland Lakes, and created

the Medical Technology program there. He retired in 2000 after

35 years of service.

GIVING GUIDE

Donors to the OCC Foundation have many ways to give, and many choices for their support. Give to an existing fund to support the scholarship, academic program, special project, or

campus facility of your choice. Create and name a new expendable or endowed fund. Designate your support to the part of

OCC most important to you. Minimums apply.

There are many ways to provide support: Sustaining Gifts – Made regularly on an annual, monthly, or more frequent basis. Tributes and Memorials – Made to celebrate a loved one, friend, colleague, company, or

organization. Estate Gifts – Made by naming the OCC Foundation as a beneficiary of a will or trust; insurance

policy; bank, investment, or retirement account; or other vehicle. Matching Gifts – Made by some employers to multiply the effect of their employees’ giving.

Requires employee to submit appropriate form.

And many vehicles for giving: Check made payable to the OCC Foundation. Credit card. American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and VISA accepted. Stock transfer through your broker. IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution through your plan administrator. Online at oaklandcc.edu/foundation. Payroll deduction for OCC employees through Human Resources. Automatic Bill Pay through your bank or credit union. Transfer of real estate or real property (aka Gift in Kind). Beneficiary Terms through your estate plan.

For more information on any of these options, contact the OCC Foundation at 248.341.2137 or [email protected].
