Where I grew up as a kid, we would usually have snow by this time of the year. My fondest memories of the cold winters were making an ice rink in the backyard. My dad and I would go out at night and flood the back yard, building one layer of ice after another. All the neighborhood kids could come to play. We used to pretend we were professional ice hockey players, but in reality we were just a bunch of kids having fun. What are your memories of the season? I’ve observed how some people’s attitude seems to change in the month of December. For some reason they have a tendency of becoming a gentler, kinder, giving soul underneath an otherwise stealth demeanor. It seems that the holidays cause some magic to spill into their personality. But then I’ve also observed the other side of the coin where we find the “bah humbug” Ebenezer Scrooge-type attitude—people who almost seem to resent the fun and festivities of the holidays. The older I get, the more I can almost understand why people resent all the busyness of the season, since routines are disrupted constantly. I’ve even caught myself saying a time or two, “Andrew, be more like a child and appreciate all the fun, food, and festivities that December has to offer.” Since my wife and I recently became empty-nesters, I can understand that trap of longing for “days-of-yore” when the kids brought that innocent sense of awe and wonder, love and joy, laughter and energy into December. But with each new year, I try to challenge myself to build new memories. As long as there is life in this ol’ body, there are ways to enjoy each day, each memory and each situation. What it really does boil down to is attitude! So how will you be spending the holidays this year? I will be eager to hear of the different traditions and events experienced by the different families. Please do not stop making memories! That is of utmost importance. But of equal importance is our ability to take a positive attitude toward not just the season, but of each day that we are given life on this planet called Earth. I suggest we all keep a smile on our face, a bounce in our step, and look for the all the best that this December has to offer! “The difference between a hardship and an opportunity is the attitude we take toward it.” — Rev. ‘Tis the Season forHealth - by DRCS

Christie StifleThe holiday season is a favorite

time of year for many people, butit can be easy to overlook dietwith all the delicious foods, andeven easier to neglect exercise.Exercise is beneficial for everyone, and is especially beneficial forseniors over 65 years of age andolder. As the body ages, it takes alittle longer to repair itself, butphysical activity benefits people ofall ages and activity levels.

Starting or maintaining aregular exercise routine can bechallenging as you age, especiallyif you are discouraged by illness, health problems and injuries orfalls. While these factors can bediscouraging, these reasons areactually the best reasons to getstarted and keep moving. Thereare many benefits to exercise, andit can be enjoyable, especiallywith other like-minded people.

Regular exercise has numerousbenefits, including increasingenergy, improving mood andsleep, maintaining independence, lowering changes of injury, relieving stress, and eveneliminating symptoms of illnessor pain. Many medical conditionsare also improved with regularexercise, such as diabetes, highblood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity, coloncancer, and Alzheimer’s anddementia. Exercise can also

improve your overall sense ofwell-being—it is the key to stayingstrong and healthy.

Remember to speak to yourdoctor before starting an exerciseprogram, especially if you have apreexisting condition. Since it maybe easy to overlook diet andexercise during this holidayseason, it is important toremember all of the numerousbenefits of exercise. Committingto an exercise program is one ofthe healthiest decisions you canmake. Don’t wait for your NewYear’s resolution. Get startedtoday!
