It is without a doubt my favorite holiday. Surprisingly enough, it was not until I reached early adulthood that I realized this special celebration was not a global event, but rather an American icon! Although the Pilgrims and Native Americans receive credit for gathering their meager crops into a shared banquet of feasting, it was George Washington who issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789; thus making it a public holiday. It was this proclamation that set aside a day on the American calendar to focus on blessings, abundance and victory over a stronger, better equipped foe (Britain in this instance). So let’s roll the calendar forward a couple hundred years. We still celebrate Thanksgiving as a holiday, and it is still observed on the fourth Thursday in November. However, I dare say the focus of the day has changed for many of us over the years. Even in my (relatively) brief lifetime, I can see a shift in the focus of this November holiday. I grew up spending Thanksgiving with family, going to church, eating turkey, and watching football ... in that order. It was a day of reflection, a day of gratitude and a day of thanks. Today, with the aid of advertising dollars and the fear of congested mall traffic during December, it would appear, for better or worse, that the Thanksgiving holiday has become precious more than a precursor to the shopping rush of December. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of purchasing “just the right gift” for our loved ones is both generous and honorable. It says that “we care.” On the other hand, if we miss out on the positive, life-enriching experiences of offering thanks, we truly miss out on something important. We miss out on the opportunity to build depth of character through the humble action of being thankful. So how will you spend this Thanksgiving? There is no right or wrong way; that is for certain! But like George Washington, I invite us all to be intentional in focusing on our blessings, our abundance and our victories in life!

DRCS NewsTips for a Thinner Thanksgiving

Gaining weight during theholiday season is a nationalpastime. Did you know that mostpeople gain at least a poundduring the holiday, some evengain more? Worst is most peoplekeep that weight on permanently.

The good news is with a littleknowledge you can indulge intraditional holiday fare and stillenjoy a guilt-free Thanksgivingfeast. After all, being stuffed is agood idea only if you are a turkey.

Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast. Takea walk early Thanksgiving Dayand then again after dinner if youare up to it. It is a wonderful wayfor families to get physical andenjoy the holiday at the sametime.

Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.Start your day with a healthybreakfast, preferably one withprotein and fiber which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensiblelater in the day during the“big feast.”

Watch Your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose. Don’tsquander your calories on foods

that you can have all year long.Indulge with small portions ofholiday favorites so you can enjoyyour traditional favorites

Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and defatted gravy tend tobe the best bets because they arelower in fat and calories.

Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for secondhelpings or leftovers. You are lesslikely to overeat and have moreroom for a delectable dessert. Butonly one slice of that pumpkinpie!!!
