Andrew’s CornerThanksgiving
We all know that November isthe month that ushers in theholiday of Thanksgiving. It iswithout a doubt my favoriteholiday. Surprisingly enough, itwas not until I reached earlyadulthood that I realized thisspecial celebration was not aglobal event, but rather anAmerican icon! Although thePilgrims and Native Americansreceive credit for gathering theirmeager crops into a sharedbanquet of feasting, it was GeorgeWashington who issued the firstThanksgiving proclamation in1789; thus making it a publicholiday. It was this proclamationthat set aside a day on theAmerican calendar to focus onblessings, abundance and victoryover a stronger, better equippedfoe (Britain in this instance). Solet’s roll the calendar forward acouple hundred years. We stillcelebrate Thanksgiving as aholiday, and it is still observed onthe fourth Thursday in November. However, I dare say the focus ofthe day has changed for many ofus over the years. Even in my(relatively) brief lifetime, I can seea shift in the focus of thisNovember holiday. I grew upspending Thanksgiving withfamily, going to church, eating
turkey, and watching football ... inthat order. It was a day ofreflection, a day of gratitude and aday of thanks. Today, with the aidof advertising dollars and the fearof congested mall traffic duringDecember, it would appear, forbetter or worse, that theThanksgiving holiday has becomeprecious more than a precursor tothe shopping rush of December.Don’t get me wrong, the idea ofpurchasing “just the right gift” forour loved ones is both generousand honorable. It says that “wecare.” On the other hand, if wemiss out on the positive,life-enriching experiences ofoffering thanks, we truly miss outon something important. We missout on the opportunity to builddepth of character through thehumble action of being thankful. So how will you spend thisThanksgiving? There is no right orwrong way; that is for certain! Butlike George Washington, I inviteus all to be intentional in focusingon our blessings, our abundanceand our victories in life!

DRCS NewsTips for a Thinner Thanksgiving
Gaining weight during theholiday season is a nationalpastime. Did you know that mostpeople gain at least a poundduring the holiday, some evengain more? Worst is most peoplekeep that weight on permanently.
The good news is with a littleknowledge you can indulge intraditional holiday fare and stillenjoy a guilt-free Thanksgivingfeast. After all, being stuffed is agood idea only if you are a turkey.
Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast. Takea walk early Thanksgiving Dayand then again after dinner if youare up to it. It is a wonderful wayfor families to get physical andenjoy the holiday at the sametime.
Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.Start your day with a healthybreakfast, preferably one withprotein and fiber which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensiblelater in the day during the“big feast.”
Watch Your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose. Don’tsquander your calories on foods
that you can have all year long.Indulge with small portions ofholiday favorites so you can enjoyyour traditional favorites
Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and defatted gravy tend tobe the best bets because they arelower in fat and calories.
Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for secondhelpings or leftovers. You are lesslikely to overeat and have moreroom for a delectable dessert. Butonly one slice of that pumpkinpie!!!
