Attorney Diane Lockhart from the CBS drama The Good Wife is back tonight in The Good Fight on the streaming service CBS All Access. Reprising her character in the spinoff series is Emmy-winning actress Christine Baranski, 64.
Tell us a bit about Diane. She is trying to get her footing in a world where she’s been robbed and cheated of her money by fam-ily members, and the firm that she created won’t give her job back. She’s estranged from her husband, who cheated on her.Have you heard from Julianna Margulies, the star of The Good Wife? Yes, we’re great friends. She was done after seven years. She said, “I’m exhausted, I’ve told the story, I need to get back to my husband and my child. I want a life,” and so she gracefully passed the baton. You’ve had quite the run on TV. But before that you did Broadway, with two Tony awards to prove it. The nice thing about The Good Fight is it’s 10 episodes, and if it were to continue, I would have a good part of my year off where I could do a play. You never want to stay away from the stage for too long. Do you have a philosophy that helps you get out of bed in the morning? I am a person who counts her blessings. I realize that I’m at the tippy top of the planetary heap, given what’s going on in the world. Whenever I think to complain I always say, “But it’s a Champagne problem.” I don’t really have problems. I am the luckiest person.
How did she rebound from the death of her husband and how does she feel about being a “working grandma”?
Go to Parade.com/baranski to find out.
Chad Michael Murray is one of my favorite actors. What’s he up to?
—Michael L., Reno, Nev.A: The former One Tree Hill star, 35, will be back on television in CMT’s new eight-part series Sun Records, premiering Feb. 23, about the early days of rock ’n’ roll. Murray will play Sun founder Sam Phillips, the Memphis-based music producer who helped shape the careers of iconic artists including Elvis Presley (Drake Milligan), Johnny Cash (Kevin Fonteyne), Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees) and Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram), in the series based on the Tony-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet.
What’s in store for Bates Motel and when will it be back on the air?
—Joe B., Tempe, Ariz.A: The TV prequel to Psycho, the classic 1960 Alfred Hitchcock fright film, returns to A&E to begin its final season Feb. 20. And Freddie Highmore, 25, says his character, Norman Bates, will be moving even further along the road to Crazytown. Fans know Norman’s mom, Norma (Vera Farmiga), “checked out” at the end of last season, but Norman remains in a state of denial, says the former child star of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). “This season is based around the objective reality of that.”

Witherspoon, 40, stars with Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern in HBO’s Big
Little Lies, premiering tonight. She’s also a producer of the series, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, about a group of moms whose lives unravel to the point of murder. Here are five facts about the New Orleans–born actress.
1. She claims descendance from John Witherspoon, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
2. Witherspoon played the sister of Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) in two episodes of Friends.
3. She spent six months learning how to sing for her Oscar-winning role as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line.
4. Her son Deacon is named after pitcher Deacon Phillippe (Pittsburgh Pirates, 1900–1911), a relative of her ex-husband, actor Ryan Phillippe.
5. Her favorite book is The End of the Affair by Graham Greene.

I loved Judi Dench in the James Bond movies. What’s her next project?
—Alan O., Victorville, Calif.A: Who doesn’t love Judi Dench, once proclaimed by a magazine poll as the Best British Actress of All Time? James Bond fans may know her best as M, the head of 007’s Secret Intelligence Service, in the eight movies in which she ap-peared between 1995 (Goldeneye) and 2015 (Spectre). But Dench, 82, also has more than 100 other TV and film credits—including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar in 1999—and she’s an acclaimed star of the stage too. Her latest movie, Tulip Fever, opening Feb. 24, is a romantic drama set during Amsterdam’s tulip mania of the 17th century.
My friend says she swam in meets as a child with a girl who grew up to be actress Mary McDonnell. Is that possible?
—Claire S., Newark, N.J.A: Possible, even probable. The Dances With Wolves movie star, 64, was a competitive swimmer as a child and has said that it was good train-ing for her later roles as strong, competi-tive women in a “male world”—such as LAPD Capt. Sharon Raydor on Major Crimes, the TNT drama that returns for its season-five midwin-ter premiere Feb. 22.

HAWAIISaiminThis unique-to-Hawaii dish combines Japanese-style chicken broth and Chinese or Japanese noodles, garnished with strips of Spam, char siu (Chinese roast pork), kamaboko (fish cake), egg pancake and all manner of toppings.
GEORGIAPeach CobblerIt’s no surprise that Peach State residents would make this warm, homey dessert their go-to sweet.
IdahoFinger SteaksMade with deep-fried chunks of sirloin, these are kind of like chicken nuggets, served with sauce for dipping.
ILLINOISDeep-Dish PizzaThe Land of Lincoln is home to so many iconic comfort foods that it’s hard to choose just one. But Chi-cago’s doughy, thick-crust pizza is a universal favorite.
INDIANABreaded Pork Tenderloin SandwichThis classic Hoosier sand-wich features a large, flat piece of deep-fried pork tenderloin that overhangs a round burger bun.
IOWAMaid-Rite SandwichSince 1926, this simple sandwich of beef loose meat (or ground beef) heaped on a warm bun has been a favorite in the Hawkeye State. According to legend, this sandwich got its name after a deliv-eryman sampled butcher Fred Angell’s creation and declared it “made right!”
KANSASChicken-Fried Steak and Mashed PotatoesAt home or dining out, Kansans love this classic comfort food—always slath-ered in white gravy.
KENTUCKYHot BrownCreated at Louisville’s legendary Brown Hotel, this indulgent open-faced sand-wich sports turkey, bacon and a cheesy white sauce—served hot, of course.
LOUISIANAGumboEvery home cook in the Bayou State has his or her spin on this iconic stew. Creole versions typically feature seafood, while their Cajun cousins incorporate chicken and sausage. (At Parade.com/gumbo we’ve got a recipe for Mardi Gras gumbo from a local.)
MAINELobster RollWell, anything with lobster, really, since the state has such an abundance of the sweet crustacean.
MARYLANDCrab CakesMarylanders expect their cakes to be filled with big chunks of fresh lump crabmeat with just enough breading to hold it all together.
MASSACHUSETTSClam ChowderLocal clams star in the Bay State’s riff on this creamy stick-to-your-ribs soup.
MINNESOTAHotdishMinnesotans whip up many variations of this homey casserole—typically with locally grown wild rice, tater tots or hash browns, chicken or tuna, veggies (usually canned or frozen) and a creamy sauce (often cream-of-something soup).
MISSISSIPPITamalesMexican migrant laborers brought tamales to the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century, and local African-American cooks embraced this comfort food, using cornmeal instead of tradi-tional masa.
MISSOURIToasted RavioliFor this St. Louis specialty, ravioli are breaded and deep-fried, then served with a thick tomato dipping sauce.
MONTANAHuckleberry PieWild huckleberries are a special summertime treat in Big Sky Country—coveted by both human and animal (bears!) foragers.
NEBRASKARunzasPocket sandwiches filled with ground beef, cab-bage and onions, Runzas are popular on-the-go
comfort food in the Cornhusker State.
NEVADAThai FoodVisitors may line up for the all-you-can-eat buffet at the casinos, but locals love their Thai fare—served at more than 450 restaurants in Las Vegas alone, thanks to an influx of Thais over the last 20 years.
NEW HAMPSHIREApple Cider DoughnutsGranite State residents (and other New England-ers) enjoy this sweet treat made with apple cider and finished with a dusting of cinnamon sugar.

Send questions to marilyn @ parade.com
Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant
Say a college student named John is a fine artist but finds chemistry fascinating too. Which of the fol-lowing statements is more likely to be true? (1) As an adult, John is a chemistry professor; or (2) as an adult, John is a chemistry professor and enjoys doing art as a hobby. —Eike Freidank, Schortens, Germany
What do you think, readers? The answer appears at the bottom of the column.
The first statement is more likely. Why? Because it’s broader. It indicates only John’s profession, so just one condition must be met. (John could do anything as a hobby or have no hobbies at all.) The second statement contains two condi-tions to be satisfied.
