Klirrklockor, klirrklockor

Klirrklockor, klirrklockor

Bjällerklang hela vägen

Åh, vad roligt det är att rida

I en en-häst öppen släde

Klirrklockor, klirrklockor

Name: Anke De Clercq Degree: Master in Chemical Engineering (2016) Current Job: Improvement Engineer at Dow Benelux (Terneuzen) In September, I started working in Dow Terneuzen as an improvement engineer in the LHC (Light HydroCarbons) department, more specifically in the furnace section of the steam crackers. As an improvement engineer, I am working with run plant engineers, project managers, process engineering, operators,… which makes the job very diverse. It is my task to investigate common failures of the furnaces, find the cause of these failures and try to prevent them in the future. Afterwards, projects are started which implement the proposed solution in the plant. The first projects assigned to me include the investigation of trips, an improvement of the decoke procedure, a process automation upgrade, implementation of flow transmitters,… Furthermore, I am helping with the preparation of the LHC2 turnaround next year. In the meantime, I am still discovering everything about the steam crackers. Some trainings are organized, but most of the learning is ‘on the job’. When I have questions, I can simply walk into someone’s office and get a more experienced person’s opinion. To gain some practical experience, I am working closely together with the operators for a few days. In this way, I get to know the actions they have to take in the control room and the plant. All of the above, makes my job at Dow a very challenging, interesting and fun job! If you have questions, you can always contact me via e-mail ([email protected]).

MaChT Volunteers

You all probably already know the board members of MaChT, but do you know

who our volunteers are too? They are a big part of MaChT, without them we

wouldn’t be able to organize our big events like the New Year’s Reception or the

Cocktail Party. In order to know them a little better we asked them some ques-

tions. Below you can find their answers!

*Editor’s note: Not everyone replied on the questionnaire so not all the graphs will be 100% correct!

45 % of our volunteers are girls, so

we can say we got a nice distribu-

tion between the sexes, which can

be hard to achieve in an engineer-

ing study!

As expected no one is a first or second

bachelor, most of our volunteers are

third bachelor or first master students.

This chart shows which master our

volunteers would like to study or are

studying at the moment. Chemical

engineering is the most popular one!

6

40% of our volunteers is in a

relationship! 20% is forever alone

and 10 % doesn’t even know what

a relationship is.. Maybe you

should ask that to the 10% who is

still single!

We all had the courses Analyse I, II, III, MeLa, … But do our volunteers

really do know math? I asked them a simple question: How much is 7 + 8?

Here are the answers:

We also asked them their opinion on Zwijnaarde. Do they like it here or

not?

Working at Dow Benelux Working at Dow is unique. In principle, every employee is responsible for the work that he/she does. So it is up to you to decide what interests you. The personal development plan is completely tailored to your own preferences. You have lot of freedom in the execution of your work. Dow expects every employee to have the knowledge and experience to make decisions independently. Dow is a worldwide company. When you apply for a function at Dow in Terneuzen, it does not necessarily mean that you will work at that location. Based on your personal interests, you could be located everywhere in the world. That is why all the Dow job vacancies are offered via the internet and why Dow has a worldwide internal job bank on the intranet. UGent graduates within Dow Benelux Name: Sara Vernimmen Degree: Chemical Technology (2016) Current Job: Improvement Engineer at Dow (Terneuzen) Since the first of September 2016 I started working as an improvement engineer for Dow in the department Power & Utilities. This department makes sure all other factories on the site have a continuous supply of steam, water, electricity, nitrogen, etc. As an improvement engineer I oversee a multitude of projects, varying from maintenance projects to the design and construction of new (parts of) installations. On the one hand I collaborate a lot with engineers, but on the other hand I get the opportunity to be in the plant and see everything for myself. As an improvement engineer you guide the project from the very first phase where an idea is generated to the final start-up of the installation. Seeing projects evolve from the beginning until the very end is a great experience as a freshly graduated engineer to learn a lot in a short period of time. As I had been doubting for a long time whether to pursue a phd or not, I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of water quality projects with different universities, among which Ghent University. Getting the chance to steer your career into a direction that fits your interests, makes Dow an ideal company for a first job.

Exxon Mobil

Dear burgies,

For some of you, Ir. still seems unreal, while for others the prize is almost within reach.

In late June two years ago, I also received that coveted title, and I could call myself a Chemical Engineer. On top of that, I did not have to worry about the future since I had already signed a contract with ExxonMobil. After working here for a year, I can assure you that I have made worse decisions in my life.

I left the student-life behind me and started as Utilities & Environmental Engineer at the Antwerp Polymers Plant. Simply put, I am the engineer responsible for the power plant and the water purification of the site. My job contains, next to contact with the people who ensure continuous operation of the company and the day-to-day follow up, also a number of larger projects. From day one you will already be given a huge responsibility, but luckily you're not alone: with the help of your coach and colleagues you work your way into a whole new world. In addition, everyone's door is always open for questions, which doesn’t only benefit learning but also the atmosphere in the workplace.

What particularly appealed to me in the company is that you get a lot of opportunities, whether or not in the form of training. For example, after a month I was already in Scotland to hone my technical knowledge. But also soft skills such as learning to present and networking are trained. The advantage of working for a multinational company, is that there is wide range of job opportunities; through the concept of job rotation, you always get presented a new challenge, this being in an international context if you would like this.

This may sound as a cliché, but in the future you will be at work most of the week. So make sure you choose something which makes you feel good and you like doing. Go and talk and listen to different companies and make sure there is some kind of click. And who knows, we might soon be colleagues.

If you want to know more or if you'd have any questions, you can always send an e-mail to [email protected].

Bekaert

After earning a PhD in Chemical Engineering, I started as R&D manager at Bekaert in September. Bekaert, worldwide leader in wire solutions, aims to offer added value to its customers through continuous improvement of its products. The associated importance of innovation within Bekaert I found quite attractive and got me to apply for a job interview. The application rounds followed each other in quick succession, between the first call and the eventual contract proposal were about 5 weeks.

My first month in Bekaert was of full training on processes, products and business strategy. One of the advantages of Bekaert is that it is headquartered in Belgium, making our CEO himself could explain his vision for the future to the new executives.

As R&D manager you are assigned projects for which you carry the ultimate responsibility. To give you an idea, some of my current projects are the development of materials consisting of metal fibres for use in electrolysis equipment, fuel cells and batteries. Apart from the technical side this function also includes the protection of intellectual property, providing technical support to customers worldwide as well as scaling up of prototypes to industrial quantities.

In short, a job at Bekaert is very diverse and allows you to further develop in various fields, e.g. technical / commercial / management. There are plenty of opportunities for growth within Bekaert depending on your interests. If you would like some more information, don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail ([email protected]) or pay a visit to our website (http://www.bekaert.com/)

Exam Workout

We are sorry to remind you, but the examination period is coming.

That means that you are going to spend many hours sitting at your

desk, which can result in sour muscles and back pain. As you will

have enough other things on your mind during this period, we have

gathered some simple exercises for you to relieve or prevent some

Exercise 1: chest

Starting position

This one you can easily do sitting on your desk chair.

Sit up straight. Put one hand in your neck. Keep the

other hand stretched along your head.

Execution

Reach upwards with your hand. Hold for 3 seconds,

then relax. Repeat 2 x 20 times for both hands.

Remarks

Keep your shoul- ders open.

Exercise 2: lower spine

Starting position

Lie on your back. Bend your left leg and set your foot

next to the knee of your other leg.

Execution

Grab your left knee with your right hand and bend it

around your right leg. Try to keep your left shoulder

on the ground. Hold for 5 seconds and go back to the

starting position. Repeat 2 x 10 times each side.

Chemistry Jokes

A neutron walks into a restaurant and orders a couple of drinks.

As she is about to leave, she asks the waiter how much she owes.

The waiter replies, “For you, No Charge!”

Two atoms are walking down the street. Says one atom to the

other, “Hey! I think I lost an electron!”. The other says,

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I‟m positive!

A small piece of ice which lived in a test tube fell in love with a

bunsen burner. “Bunsen! My flame! I melt whenever I see you!”

said the ice. The bunsen burner replied: “It‟s just a phase you‟re

going through.”

Where and how frequently do chemists have sex?

On the table, periodically.

I told a joke about noble gasses but there was no

reaction.

Do you know a good chemistry joke?

No sorry, all of them argon.

What do you do to chemists when they die?

You barium.

Don't trust atoms, they make up everything.

Did you know that you can cool yourself to -273.15˚C and still be

0k?

11

Exercise 3: hip

Starting position

Lie on your back. Bend your knees and set your feet

flat on the ground next to each other.

Execution

Spread your legs as far as possible. Keep your feet to-

gether. Hold for 5 seconds and slowly go back to the

starting position. Repeat 2 x 10 times.

Exercise 4: shoulder

Starting position

Stand up or sit and keep your arms relaxed.

Execution

Pull your shoulder blades towards each other as far as

you can. Hold for 3 seconds. Relax. Repeat 3 x 10 times.

Exercise 5: lower spine

Starting position

Lie on your back. Bend your knees and set your feet

flat on the ground next to each other.

Execution

Move both knees as far as possible to one side. Pay

attention: your feet should stay on the ground and

your shoulders should not move. Hold for 5 seconds and go back. Repeat each

Pick-up Lines

In the corridors of the LCT we overheard some people saying that

they sometimes experience some difficulties on how to start talking

to a random stranger in whom they are might be potentially

interested in. Whether you just want to hook up for a one-night

stand or you are interested in a relationship, we will provide you

Let’s start with when you have already had some drinks, and you don’t trust your

instinct anymore on whether it might be the one or not. So in this case you should

play safe and make sure that that person also understands that it’s just for the night.

However you still have to score first, and there are two ways of doing so. Which one

you chose depends on the type of person you are: either more the direct type of

person or the more subtle type. Let’s start with the more subtle type, these people

typically feel more comfortable hitting off with a compliment:

Do you have 11 protons? Cause your sodium fine.

Were your parents engineers? Because you have a nice design.

You must be differentiable, because all I see are smooth curves.

No fan of subtle approaches? No worries, here are some for the daredevils amongst

you:

Baby you've definitely got potential, my place would be a great place to

convert it to kinetic

I must be a diamond now, because you just gave me a hardness of 10

You must be related to Alfred Nobel, because baby you are

dynamite!

If you were a concentration gradient I'd go down on you

Hong Tong

If you feel like Asian food, Hong Tong is the ideal place to fill your stomach! They

serve Thai food and are open all days of the week except Monday. There is also a

take away option for the busy afternoons. And of course we went to check it out

ourselves as you can see in the pictures below!

Prices: € 13-15 (for one take away dish)

Adress: Grotesteenweg-Noord 61, Zwijnaarde

Food in Zwijnaarde

Of course you cannot always cook yourself. Especially when you‟re

stuck in Zwijnaarde the whole day. Ghent University is not really

scoring on a gastronomic level this academic year. For that reason,

we have made an overview of other potential retreats where you

can get your lunch (and for the zealous thesis students, dinner).

Ally‟s

Ally’s is quite the alternative for the 904 cafeteria. Next to a wide variety of

sandwiches, they have panini’s and also a day soup. They are open every day of

the week and if you give them a call before 11.15 a.m., they will prepare your

order and you will not have to wait in line! If you order the sandwich of the week,

you also get a free drink!

Prices: € 3-5

Address: Grotesteenweg-Noord 83, Zwijnaarde

Our rating: ★★★★★

„t Lekkerbekje

‘t Lekkerbekje cannot be forgotten in this list. For your French fries, this is the

place to be! They also serve other snacks and even sandwiches!

Prices: € 6 (fries + bicky); € 3-5 (sandwiches)

Address: Grotesteenweg-noord 51, Zwijnaarde

As you can see, these pick-up lines clearly won’t work if you’re going for a keeper. If

you’re in this situation, you might want to consider a more gentle approach. And

what better way to roll into a profound conversation then to use one of these

opening lines:

Hi does your body consist of Oxygen and Neon? Because you are the ONe

Are you made of copper? Cause I Cu in a relationship with me

Is it getting hot in here? Or is it just our bond that is forming?

Even if there wasn't gravity on earth, I'd still fall for you

Forget hydrogen you're my number one element

But of course it might also be possible that you no longer have to look for that

special one in the nightlife, because you meet her every day when going to school.

From the first year on, you saw her in the plateau. And lucky you, when you came to

the LCT she was still there, but you still don’t have that special connection that you

desire so much. Well especially for you, we present you this perfect line, that will

win her heart in no time:

Baby stop with diet coke, you've got plenty of ASSpertame

Editor’s note: MaChT takes no responsibility for any physical violence induced by the

use of these pick-up lines.

14

Skiing Workout: Squats

Some of you may have planned a skiing trip after the examination

period. Skiing is an endurance sport and takes a lot effort from

your leg muscles. If you prepare your leg muscles, you can ski much

longer without any pain and lower the risk of muscle injuries. The

quadriceps is the most used muscle group during skiing. Actually,

Start 2 months ahead of your trip with a squat session 3 times a week. Each time,

do 3 squat sets (without any weight). For example 3 x 10. Each week, increase the

number of squats per set by 5-30, depending on your level. 3 weeks before your

trip, start to decrease the number of squats. In this way, your body will peak to-

wards your skiing week and will be in optimal shape.

How to do a squat?

Place your feet 30 to 50 cm apart from each other

Bend your knees until your thighs are parallel to

the ground and stretch your arms forward to

give some counterweight

Make sure your knees do not move too much to

the front

Keep your legs steady during the squat move

Move back to the starting position and repeat

If this goes easy for you, squat deeper

How to Steam Vegetables in the Microwave

An article in the New York Times revealed that microwaving does NOT kill the

nutrients in your food although this is the common perception. So, forget about

waiting forever while cooking your vegetables on the stove! You can enjoy delicious

and healthy steamed vegetables in less than 10 minutes when using your

microwave. Just follow these 5 easy steps!

Editor’s note: Works well with carrots, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, peas, bell

peppers

1. Wash and dry your vegetable and cut it into equal size pieces.

2. Place them in one layer in a microwave safe glass bowl or a dish with sides.

3. Add just enough water to the bowl that it comes 1/8 up the side of the

vegetable piece.

4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a microwave safe cover, and microwave

for 2 minutes. Test the vegetable for softness, and rotate or flip it if

necessary. Cook again for 4 minutes.

5. Continue alternating sides and cooking for one minute per side until the

vegetable can easily be pierced with a fork. Once your veggies are moist and

tender, they are all ready to serve!

One-Bowl Microwave Macaroni and

Cheese

Ingredients

1/2 cup macaroni or shell pasta

1/2 cup water

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup milk

1/4 to 1/2 cup shredded cheese, like cheddar cheese or Emmental

Extra add-ins: diced vegetables, shredded or cubed cooked meat, cubed tofu,

salsa, dried mustard, chili powder

Instructions

Combine the pasta, water, and salt in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave on high power (800-1000 W) for 2 minutes, then stir. Watch to see if the

water is foaming over the side of the bowl and stir sooner if needed. Continue

microwaving in 2-minute intervals until the pasta is cooked. Stir between each

interval and continue microwaving until the pasta is soft and cooked through. This

should take 4 to 8 minutes total, depending on your microwave strength. If the

pasta absorbs all the water before the pasta is cooked, add another 2 tablespoons

of water.

Stir the milk and cheese into the pasta. Microwave on high power for 30 seconds,

and stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring between each

interval, until the cheese has melted and forms a

creamy sauce. This should take 1 to 11/2 minutes

total. For a creamier sauce, add an extra

tablespoon or two of milk and cheese.

Eat immediately: This mac and cheese is best

when piping hot from

the microwave. If you

need to reheat it, add

some milk.

40g softened butter or 2 tablespoons vegetable

oil (NOT olive oil, it’s too strongly flavored)

1 teaspoon vanilla sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa

1/3 cup plain flour

1/3 cup table sugar

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1

Combine water, butter and essence in a large (1 cup capacity) coffee mug. Add

remaining ingredients. Stir well to combine.

Step 2

Microwave on high for 60-75 seconds (using a 1100 watt microwave). 60 seconds

results in a molten center. 75 seconds will result in a more uniformly cooked brownie.

Step 3

Serve topped with vanilla ice-cream. Take care, as brownie will be hot and will

continue to cook while standing.

French Toast In a Mug

Ingredients

2 Slices of bread, cubed

1 egg

1 tablespoon of butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon of sugar (optional)

2 tablespoons of milk

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon vanilla or vanilla sugar

Instructions

Place the butter in a cup and microwave it for about 30 seconds to melt. Then, coat

the sides of your mug(s) to prevent sticking.

Whisk the egg in the mug, then add milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla (sugar). Mix

everything well together. Add the cubed bread to the mix and allow it to soak for

about a minute. You may need to gently stir the pieces of bread around to make

sure all of the pieces get coated evenly.

Microwave on about 1000 W for about a minute and a half, check it every 30

seconds until the egg is completely

cooked.
