A framework for sustainable development

Sustainable development is an integral part of running our globalbusiness successfully. We work within a sustainable developmentframework which focuses on the 10 priorities most relevant and material to our business’s environmental, social and economic footprint. This framework has been embedded into our global operations and wehave developed, tested and launched a sustainable assessment matrix(SAM) which enables each operation to measure its performanceagainst the 10 priorities. This framework provides a common approachwithin the group, supporting learning between our businesses.

The creation of the sustainabledevelopment framework of 10priorities and the accompanying SAM system has been an importantinvestment for us. The self-assessmentprocess enables our businesses tocompare their performance againstthe 10 priorities and with their peerswithin the group.

All operations where our groupcompanies have day-to-daymanagement control must achieve the minimum level 1 on the stairways.Operations which fall short of level 1must have mitigation plans in place to achieve this standard as soon aspossible. Where operations haveachieved the highest standards at

level 4, they provide case studies and learnings for other parts of thebusiness. In addition, to encourageoperations to engage in level 4projects, we have also committed to long-term scenario planning for the key priorities of water, carbon and HIV/Aids, to assess the businessneeds and current and potential future thinking on these issues.

Through SAM, we aim to collate and report the sustainabledevelopment performance of all our businesses where SABMillergroup companies have day-to-daymanagement control, either as a result of a majority shareholding orthrough a management agreement.

However, we share our standards and policies with our associates and other business interests where we do not have direct managementcontrol. In China, for example, wehave had several meetings with theCR Snow senior management team to share our sustainable developmentapproach.

Empowering soft drink distributors in Zambia

Since SABMiller re-entered the Zambianmarket in 1994, Zambian Breweries Limited(ZBL) has become one of the country’slargest taxpayers and investors outside of the mining sector.

ZBL’s sales and marketing department has invested more than US$1,300,000 insetting up an empowerment distributionchain for its carbonated soft drinksoperations, creating over 1,800 jobs. This investment involves several initiatives, including the sourcing, purchasing andmaintaining of 500 branded kiosks, or N’tembas, complete with ice bins;providing 155 fully branded containerswhich are placed in high density areas as retail sales points and wholesale outlets; and the provision of more than 300 vending trolleys and 700 ice boxes tostreet vendors. Interest free start-up loansand loans to purchase vehicles are alsoprovided to enable distributors to moreadequately distribute our products in ruralareas where distances preclude directoutlet delivery, and in urban high densityareas where drop sizes are too small. In order to help these entrepreneurs tosucceed, trade marketing representativesfrom ZBL provide training to ensure thatthey distribute the product effectively.

Through these investments ZBL achieves additional sales volume, while the distributors make a profit, enablingthem to employ people and generategrowth within their community.

Honduras providesskills to children

Our soft drinks business in Hondurasintroduced an education programme for the children of workers in the Azunosasugar cane fields with the aim ofeliminating the problem of child labour inthe local industry and improving the level of education and household income in the community. Up to 100 children attendthe school operated by the CerveceriaHondureña Foundation, where they areprovided with knowledge and skills in astructured and certified programme. Food, medicine, clothes and financial assistanceare also provided. Part of the trainingincludes the growing of non-traditionalcrops such as sweet potatoes, peppersand tomatoes. These crops are taken to the local market to be sold, and theproceeds are reinvested in the Foundationto cover some of the costs of theprogramme.

Angola supports Junior Achievement

In partnership with several othercompanies operating in Luanda, our soft drinks business, Coca-Cola BottlingLuanda (CCBL), supports the Coca-ColaFoundation’s Junior Achievement Initiativein Angola. The training programme aims to develop entrepreneurial spirit and self-initiative, as well as to provide a basicunderstanding of business fundamentals to students in public schools.

The people of CCBL volunteer tocontribute 75 working hours to theprogramme, giving their time and expertiseto teach the students and provide themwith knowledge and information about how the business world works and howstrong ethics and values can contributetowards creating a successful business.

Two courses are available: PersonalEconomics, which introduces the studentsto the business world, and helps them tochoose a career path and understand theskills required for it; and Mini-Enterprise,which consists of basic business contentfrom setting up a business to producingand selling the goods. Students set up their own simulated businesses and areresponsible for producing and selling the products, and ultimately its success.

Almost 900 students benefited from thefirst two semesters of the programme, and CCBL believes this will prepare andinspire Angola’s youth to lead fruitful lives athome and make a meaningful contributiontowards the country and a better world.

ABI addresses HIV/Aids

For several years our soft drinks businessin South Africa, ABI, has addressed theissue of HIV/Aids among its workforcethrough a comprehensive interventionprogramme.

The two areas of major focus internally are to manage existing infections throughvoluntary counselling and testing (VCT) andearly diagnosis; and managed health care, which includes anti-retroviral treatment andan effective education programme aimed at reducing or preventing new infections.Wellness educators have been trained toapply the model in small group sessionswhich are carried out during working hours. ABI focuses on VCT through its ACT campaign (Awareness, Counsellingand Testing), which is designed toencourage employees to discover theirstatus early enough to start treatmentshould it be required. The costs of the ACT campaign are paid for by thecompany and since its inception, 86% of ABI employees have participated andknow their status.

Information regarding the medical condition of employees is kept strictly confidential at all times and employees who have a life threatening disease are treated withsensitivity and compassion. The companysupports the principle of non-discrimination.

A Life Threatening Diseases policy has been put in place to provide aframework within which to manageHIV/Aids and inform employees of their rights, responsibilities and benefits. All employees and their dependents have access to a managed health careprogramme which includes lifestylemanagement and the provision of anti-retroviral therapy through an externalservice provider.

ABI aims to contribute to the reduction of HIV/Aids in the communities in which it operates by making HIV/Aids preventionand management an integral part of itsCorporate Social Investment strategy and projects.

Angola training for success

Coca-Cola Bottlers Luanda (CCBL)believes in harnessing the potential of the people who live and work in the communities in which it operates. In partnership with a professional trainingschool, EFTA (Escola de FormaçãoTeconológica de Angola), students arerecruited and provided with the training and skills required by CCBL for expansioninto other parts of Angola.

Through the education programme thestudents are trained to become mechanics, electricians and production line operatorsover a period of three to 18 months. Thisenables the business to invest in bothdeveloping skills for future employees, and in enhancing the capabilities of localcommunities. An added benefit is thatstudents are also equipped with skillswhich can be transferred to other parts of the business.

Workplace continued

We are committed to building strong teams of smart, educated people who are capable of working throughout the company, throughout the world.

Zambia assists employees with HIV/Aids programme

Most of the employees who work atZambian Breweries and its soft drinkoperations are locals who have grown up with the stigma that surrounds HIV/Aids in a country which has a national prevalence rate of 18%.

HIV/Aids is a major focus for ZambianBreweries and as such it was the firstcompany in Zambia to provide anti-retroviral treatment for all of its staff and their families, as well as to havevoluntary counselling and testing (VCT) centres in place on all sites.

Following initial discussions withemployees, the first on-site VCT centre was opened, and within six months approximately 100 employees had been through the centre. A year laterthe business had an HIV/Aids VCT count of 80%. This was a huge source of pridefor management, indicating a high level of trust from employees.

As an example to all employees, members of the Operating Board went for VCT and were taken through the counselling training. Managers werethen required to include HIV/Aids in theirgoals in order to create a sense ofownership from senior managers. While its HIV/Aids policy is recognized as one of the strongest in the country, the disease remains one of the biggestrisks facing the business, given its highprevalence among those individuals whoform part of its supply and distributionchains. As a result, Zambian Breweries has also started a programme to promoteawareness and understanding of thedisease beyond the workplace and into the communities in which it operates.

At our operations in Botswana, a similar programme is in place to assist all employees. The company provides on-site clinics, a doctor who calls twice a week to test and counsel employees, and nurses and peer educators educatethe staff about the virus.

Environment

Operating in an environmentally responsible way is a priority for all of our businesses.

ABI sets the benchmark

ABI, the soft drinks subsidiary of SAB Ltdin South Africa, has set the benchmark for SABMiller’s priority to make more soft drinks with less water. ABI’s Midrandmanufacturing and distribution unitupgraded its water treatment plant, replacing the conventional chemicaltreatment plant with a Nano/RO membranefiltration plant. In a country where potablewater remains an issue, the plant investedR2.4 million ($344,800) in new equipmentand systems to reduce waste water.

The upgrade resulted in the plantperforming at 1.48hl of water for everyhectolitre of product, and a water ratiotarget of 1.3hl/hl by 2012 has been set. The percentage of water lost down thedrain was also reduced from 30% to 10%.Steady progress has been made on theprevious water to soft drink ratio of 2hl/hl at the plant, and 1.35hl/hl is now beingachieved when production conditions are favourable. This compares very wellagainst other PET only plants and theaverage usage across TCCC’s globaloperations, which includes those plantswhich use returnable glass bottles, is between 2hl/hl and 2.5hl/hl.

In a further effort to reduce the company’senvironmental footprint, ABI is also a major funder of South Africa’s PolyethyleneTerephthalate (PET) Recycling Company(PETCO), which is a world first industry-ledinitiative. The company’s activities involvethe recycling of PET plastic bottles andtheir conversion into polyester resin, whichis then used to make products such asvideo tapes, pillow fibre, fleece jackets and carpets.

Established in 2005, PETCO has madesteady progress in increasing the volume ofrecycled PET in South Africa. The companyis also committed to increasing awarenessand education about PET recyclability.

Creating business opportunities in Zambia

Zambian Breweries Limited (ZBL) is thelargest recycler of bottles and plastic cratesin Zambia. Of the 320 million bottles thatare used in Zambia every year to bottlebeer and soft drinks, only 9 million of theseare being used for the first time. The restare reused between 10 and 25 times duringtheir lifecycle, after which they are crushedand recycled.

ZBL also uses 13 million plastic crates ayear, only 100,000 of which are being usedfor the first time. These plastic crates arereused several times and, once damaged, they too are crushed and recycled.

In addition to reducing its impact on the environment, the recycling of bottlesand crates has created opportunities for small local recycling businesses todevelop. ZBL has helped to set up anindependent plastic recycling businesswhich has created 40 jobs and resulted in any new crates consisting of 75%recycled plastic materials.

Three local entrepreneurs have also been assisted with the purchase of a glass crusher to help them set up a glassrecycling business. Additional kilns mayalso be purchased with the aim of turningthe bottles that are no longer suitable forbottling beer or soft drinks into recycledglassware which small businesses can sell to local bars and trade outlets.

Environment continued

As a bottler, our operations play a crucial role in water conservation and purification, energy efficiency and solid waste management.

Honduras recycles PET bottles

As PET plastic bottles have grown inpopularity with consumers in Honduras, the lack of an existing recycling culture has resulted in problems with litter andenvironmental damage.

On the island of Roatan, CerveceriaHondureña, in collaboration with the local municipality, government authorities, local communities and other private sector businesses, has established a recycling programme involving thecollection, storage and transfer of PETbottles. The programme aims to removethe solid plastic waste on the island andreduce the environmental damage causedto beaches and coral reefs; promote aculture of recycling plastic bottles amongthe community, consumers and the general public; protect the mangroves; and help reduce environmental pollution. The project involves the collection ofplastic waste from the collection pointsestablished by the local council. The wasteis then transported from the island to themainland at La Ceiba and Puerto Cortes.

A pilot recycling campaign held during theEaster period in two local communities alsoincluded visits to schools and colleges tohelp educate students about recycling andthe impact of litter on the environment.

Cerveceria Hondureña has undertakenseveral other initiatives to reduce itsenvironmental footprint. Among its majorachievements has been a 21% reduction in the total glass weight used for sparklingsoft drink returnable glass bottles over the last 10 years, and the introduction of100% recycled plastic crates two yearsago. Of the current crate population, 30%is now made of 100% recycled plastic.

Cleaner water at Appletiser

At the Appletiser plant in South Africa, waste water used in the manufacturingprocess is carefully cleaned and filteredbefore either being reused to irrigate theneighbouring apple orchards or returned to the nearby river.

The Appletiser plant filters and releases its waste water into a series of four ponds.Through the ponds, the Ph balance of the water is restored and it is aeratedbefore being allowed to settle. From there, the water is pumped through a shallowlabyrinth, which allows oxidation to takeplace and uses ultra violet light from the sun to help sterilise the water.

At the end of the process, the chemicaloxygen demand (COD) has been reducedfrom an average of 8,000 units when itleaves the plant to between 30 and 50units. This reduction in COD is critical, as a high level can cause water life to die from lack of oxygen.

The waste and treated water is carefullymonitored and a report supplied to theDepartment of Water Affairs and Forestry.

Community

The continued health and sustainable growth of SABMiller’s business depends on the long-term wellbeing and success of the communities that surround us. We are firmly committed to benefiting our local communities.

Lesotho: educating the supply chain on HIV/Aids

In line with our Sustainable DevelopmentFramework, SABMiller’s subsidiaries andaffiliates aim to contribute to the reductionof HIV/Aids within their sphere of influence. The Lesotho Brewing Company (LBC) helda workshop to educate soft drink hawkersand street vendors about HIV/Aids. Thecourse provided attendees with information on how to avoid infection, the use ofcondoms, voluntary counselling andtesting, as well as living with the virus.

El Salvador provides water to students

In partnership with TCCC, Industrias La Constancia in El Salvador has worked to help schools in local communities gainaccess to water, thus elevating the qualityof life of the students and enabling them to enjoy their education in a healthierenvironment.

The company identified the TutultepequeSchool as one in need of assistance and in co-ordination with FONAES, a semi-autonomous organisation, designed aproject that would enable the school tohave its own water supply through theconstruction of a rain harvesting system. The programme, called ‘Water for myschool’, was such a success, benefiting

both students and neighbouringcommunities, that the company identifiedother local schools in need of access towater where it has implemented the rainharvesting system.

Through this project, Industrias LaConstancia has helped three schools in the Nejapa area neighbouring the softdrinks plant. Over 1,000 members of thecommunity have directly benefited from the programme to date. The system hasalso enabled the schools to save money as they no longer need to buy water.

Angola builds for the future

In an effort to improve access to water and health facilities, Coca-Cola BottlingLuanda (CCBL) has embarked on twoprojects to improve local facilities andinfrastructure. The Community WatershedsPartnership Programme aims to reduce theincidence of water borne diseases amongthe residents of Kilamba Kiaxi and Viana in Luanda, thus leading to improvements in health and the quality of life. The projectincludes the construction of 10 communitywater standpoints, training for communityhygiene promoters, the establishment ofmunicipal water boards and a governancestructure being put in place.

The programme will benefit 23,000 people in local communities and issupported by several companies includingUSAID and financed by the Coca-ColaFoundation. It will contribute to thecountry’s efforts to reconstruct andrehabilitate the infrastructure that wasalmost entirely destroyed during the war, by increasing access to water among theurban poor and improving the managementof water points.

In a second project CCBL also recognized that the hospital in Bom Jesus, the municipality where CCBL’s plant islocated, needed substantial upgrading in order to improve access to healthcareservices for its 150 employees and thelocal community.

In a partnership which CCBL establishedwith other local companies, local authoritiesand the provincial government, criticalservices at the hospital have been upgradedin order to more effectively combat commondiseases such as cholera, tuberculosis andmalaria, and to decrease the infantmortality rate.
