Our sins are no obstacle to God.

We do not deserve God’s love, but we have it anyway—not because of who we are, but because of who God is.

The God who created me wants more for my life, just as I do.

The history of God’s work in this world gives me confidence: rescuing the lost, restoring joy to the broken, reconciling the estranged.

Carrying my sins is a heavy burden—God’s plan is that I take them to the Cross.

  • This earth is a bridge to cross the water; it serves only to support our steps. We are in this world, but we are not of this world, since we say every day, “Our Father, Who art in Heaven.” We must wait, then, for our reward till we are at home, in our Father's house. This is the reason why good Christians suffer crosses, contradictions, adversities, contempt, calumnies—so much the better!

But people are astonished at this. They seem

to think that because we love the good God a little, we ought to have nothing to contradict us, nothing to make us suffer.

We say, “There is a person who is not good, and yet everything goes well with him; but with me, it is of no use doing my best; everything goes wrong.”

It is because we do not understand the value and the happiness of crosses. We say sometimes that God chastises those whom He loves. That is not true. Trials are not chastisements; they are graces to those whom God loves. . . .

We must not consider the labor, but the recompense. A merchant does not consider the trouble he undergoes in his commerce, but the profit he gains by it.

What are twenty years, thirty years, compared to eternity? What, then, have we to suffer? A few humiliations, a few annoyances, a few sharp words; that will not kill us.

It is glorious to be able to please God, so little as we are! Our tongue should be employed only in praying, our heart in loving, our eyes in weeping.

+ + + We are great, and we are nothing. There is nothing greater than man, and nothing less. Nothing is greater, if we consider his soul; nothing is less, if we look at his body. We occupy ourselves with the body, as if we had it alone to take care of . . .

+ + + We are the work of a God. One always loves one's own work. It is easy enough to understand that we are the work of a God; but that the crucifixion of a God should be our work!—that is incomprehensible.

Some people attribute a hard heart to the Eternal Father. Oh, how mistaken they are!

The Eternal Father, to disarm His own justice, gave to His Son an excessively tender heart; no one can give what he does not possess.

Our Lord said to His Father: “Father, do not punish them!” . . . Our Lord suffered more than was necessary to redeem us. But what would have satisfied the justice of His Father would not have satisfied His love. Without Our Lord's death, all mankind together could not expiate a single little lie.

The Curé of Ars Selections from the Writings of Saint John Vianney

  • Forgive me my sins, O Lord, forgive me my sins: The sins of my youth, the sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body, my idle sins, my voluntary sins, the sins I know, the sins I do not know, the sins I have concealed, the sins hidden from my memory. I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present hour. I know my sins have wounded Your Most Sacred Heart. O my Savior, let me be freed from the bonds of evil, through the grace of Your most sacred passion and death. O my Jesus, forgive what I have been and what I have done. Give me the grace to flee from sin from this moment on, and ever to seek your mercy. Amen.

The Sign of the Cross is formidable to the devil, because by the Cross we escape from him. We should make the Sign of the Cross with great respect.

We begin with the forehead: it is the head, creation—the Father; then the heart: love, life, redemption—the Son; then the shoulders: strength—the Holy Spirit.

Everything reminds us of the Cross. We ourselves are made in the form of a cross.

“Our faults are like a grain of sand beside the great mountain of the mercies of the good God.”

For 2000 years theologians and philosophers have explored this question. We will spend the next six weeks peering into this fascinating mystery. Join us in the Bayley Conference Room at 9:30 AM on October 21. Books will be available for purchase, but are not required.

DEAR WOMEN OF FAITH: Feeling overwhelmed?

Searching for God in your life? Too busy to find time for prayer? Struggling with hustle & bustle of family life? Needing more peace? Could you use some fellowship with other women struggling with the same things? Well, your prayers have been answered!

You are warmly and cordially invited to the

October 24 Diocesan Women’s Conference at Bishop McDevitt High School! There are registration

brochures in the church, or register online at www.hbgdiocese.org/women. Registration fee: $40

until October 23; $50 at the door.

RED MASS: The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, DD, JCL., will be the principal celebrant at the Red Mass on Monday, October 19, at 5:30 PM at Saint Patrick Cathedral, Harrisburg. The homilist will be the Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, JCL, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, and a founding member of the St. Thomas More Society. At the Red Mass, lawyers, judges, lawmakers, and public officials gather together to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance in their pursuit of justice. The Red Mass

originated in medieval England at the time of King Edward I, when the judges of the High Court attended Mass on the opening day of the judicial calendar. Today, the Red Mass coincides with the time period in which the U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term. All are welcome.

MARRIAGE ANNULMENTS: The Tribunal of the Diocese of Harrisburg will be giving two presentations within the diocese concerning marriage, divorce, and annulment according to Church teaching, These presentations will be helpful for divorced Catholics, those divorced who wish to marry Catholics, parish leaders in the RCIA process, and any others who may have a vested interest because of family or friends. The sessions are Thursday, October 22, at 7 PM at Saint Philip Parish,

Millersville, and Wednesday, November 11, at 7 PM at the Cardinal Keeler Center, Harrisburg. No prior registration is required. Contact:

    (657-4804, ext. 304, [email protected]).

BLOOD DRIVE: We will be attending Mass at Trinity High School on October 18, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t holding our blood drive for the Central PA Blood Bank. As you know, the location of the blood drive has been moved during our construction project. Our blood drive will take place next Sunday from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM in the parking lot

of Weis Market, Bumble Bee Hollow Road.

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Because we’re celebrating Masses at Trinity next Sunday (and there’s no Vigil Mass on Saturday), our next blood pressure screening will be the weekend of

    November 21 & 22.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH OFFICE ADMINISTRATION POSITION: Saint Joseph Parish, Mechanicsburg, has a vacancy for a part-time office administrative support position that could lead to full-time employment. This position requires a detail-oriented and flexible individual who can work independently and enjoys meeting people. Candidates should be skilled in Microsoft Office software applications and have the ability to learn proprietary software programs. Proofreading capability, coupled

with good spelling and grammar, are essential. Hours of work are daytime, Monday through Friday. Interested persons should contact the

    Saint Joseph Parish Office (766-9433).

OCTOBER 18 IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: Your support is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and the Islands of the Pacific. Your generosity helps priests, religious, and catechists reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of

circumstances. Please pray and give generously.

  • Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton called her community of sisters "the seed of an immensity of future good."

This vision of our patroness is the vision for our own parish—a community that helps each of us to discern God's grace-filled call in our lives.
