Saint Camillus de Lellis Award Camilluswas“bornatBacchianico,Naples,1550;diedatRome,14July,1614.Hewasthesonofanof icerwhohadservedbothintheNeapolitanandFrencharmies.Hismotherdiedwhenhewasachild,andhegrewupabsolutelyneglected.Whileintheservicehebecameacon irmedgambler,andinconsequenceofhislossesatplay,wasattimesreducedtoaconditionofdestitution.

HewenttoRome,whereheobtainedemploymentintheHospitalforIncurables.Hewaspromptedtogotherechie lybythehopeofacureofabscessesinbothhisfeetfromwhichhehadbeenlongsuffering.Heenteredthehospitalinwhichhehadpreviouslybeenandhewaseventually

appointeddirectorofthehospital.Ontheadviceofhisfriends,amongwhomwashisspiritualguide,St.PhilipNeri,hedeterminedtobecomeapriest.

Heestablishedhisorder,theFathersofaGoodDeath(1584),andboundthemembersbyvowtodevotethemselvestotheplague‐stricken;theirworkwasnotrestrictedtothehospitals,butincludedthecareofthesickintheirhomes.In1591GregoryXIVerectedthecongregationintoareligiousorder,withalltheprivilegesofthemendicants.Neardeath,hewouldpermitnoonetowaitonhim,andwhenscarcelyabletostandwouldcrawloutofhisbedtovisitthesick.Heissaidtohavehadthegiftofmiraclesandprophecy.

Hewasbeati iedin1742,andin1746wascanonizedbyBenedictXIV.In1930,PopePiusXInamedSt.CamillusdeLellis,togetherwithSt.JohnofGod,“principalCo‐Patronsofnursesandofnurses'associations.”
