Have a safe silly season

Image: A view of Cronulla Beach towards Wanda, Elouera and Greenhills

Hooray! Beach days are here! Our beaches – is there anywhere better in summer? If you thought sand in your budgies was bad, think again.  A swim at the beach can quickly turn from heaven to hell if you don’t play it safe. Rips form quickly and even strong swimmers can get into trouble. So play it safe. Swim between the flags at a patrolled beach.Last summer we had no lives lost at our beaches – thanks to our professional Lifeguards and their 32,850 lifeguard hours, 97,786 preventative actions, 441 rescues performed, and the volunteer Surf Lifesavers or ‘clubbies’ who help us with the serious task of keeping you and your family safe at the beach. Have a ripper of a summer!Cronulla, North Cronulla, Elouera and Wanda are patrolled every day from 8am to 5.30pm in summer.

You told usOur community’s views, opinions and requests are critical to shaping our future. Which is why we are thankful for your feeback on the Cronulla Draft Master Plan, Parking and Traffic and Readers Surveys on ‘Join the Conversation’ on our website. We’ve learned a lot from what you told us and all your feedback will be taken on board. You can find a full summary of survey results on our ‘Join the Conversation’ website. Here’s what you told us:

Cronulla Draft Master PlanNearly 150 of you completed the Draft Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Master Plan survey online to help shape the future of Cronulla.Points that you told us were important included revitalising the area for residents and visitors, planning for the area’s long term future, creating opportunities for laneway art and dining; as well as improved spaces for families to stay and play, and simply making it easier to get around.

Parking & Traffic SurveyYour interest in this issue was very apparent with over 460 residents completing our online car parking survey and residents and business owners attending evening forums to provide further input to our draft 20 year strategy.

Our Shire Readers SurveyMost of you who participated (84.9%) told us you are either satisfied or highly satisfied with this newsletter. Just over half of you (57.1%) want to receive it in your letterbox. Many of you have requested to receive it electronically and we will work on this. Watch this space!

In your words“It provides a cohesive plan to refresh [the] Cronulla public domain.” Cronulla master plan Survey participant.“Thank goodness something is being looked into.” parking & traffic Forum participant.“Help us to cope with the increase in high rise accommodation - what roads should we use to avoid traffic snarls, where are green spaces being increased, how are community spaces being enriched to ensure the Shire’s famous quality of life is maintained?” readers Survey participant.

Towards a financially sustainable futureAre you a local library user? Do you love the leafy streets and your local park? Or is it our aquatic centres and ocean baths that draw you in?At Sutherland Shire Council, we create these experiences through the services and infrastructure we provide. Like many other businesses, the cost of energy, construction and labour have increased for us. We’re concerned these costs will impact on our ability to deliver, both now and in the future.Earlier in the year Council considered increasing rates, but, determined that before a decision was made we should see what you think. We are looking for cost savings internally, but should we also consider changing the range and level of services we provide? These are just some of the considerations we need your help on. An online survey will be promoted in coming weeks. Go to jointheconversation.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au, so we can hear your thoughts, and together, we can strike the right balance.

Hungry for hungry point to open?

Photo caption: The view from Hungry Point

We are counting down to mid-2018 for the first sections of the beautiful Hungry Point Reserve to open for you to enjoy as a space to picnic, relax and play. More than $545,000 in NSW State Government funding has been allocated to ‘Part A’ of the plan, prepared by the Hungry Point Trust and Sutherland Shire Council.Hungry Point Reserve is the former NSW Fisheries site at the Southern tip of the Cronulla peninsula.  After being closed to the public for more than 100 years, the reserve is a treasure trove of local heritage and natural beauty, with stunning views of the ocean, Port Hacking River and the Royal National Park.Lower sections of Hungry Point Reserve will remain closed to the public as they are now being used as an operational base for NSW Marine Rescue and the NSW State Emergency Service.Hungry Point Reserve is managed by the Hungry Point Trust who are proudly supported by Sutherland Shire Council.

New scenic walk edges closer to completionYou’ve told us you want to enjoy active lives connected to nature and you’ll be pleased to learn we’re building a new shared pedestrian and cycleway along Prince Charles Parade in Kurnell, overlooking Silver Beach and the beautiful Botany Bay.  You’ll be able to walk from Bonna Point to halfway down Prince Charles Parade by mid-February. Eventually the pathway will link Bonna Point Reserve to the Kamay National Park walking trail, creating a continuous scenic walk to explore.

What’s the latest on ocean grove

While we were creating the ‘Draft Cronulla Master Plan’, we spent months asking you what you’d like to see in a new and revitalised Cronulla town centre. Ocean Grove Avenue is the first step towards bringing you a refreshed meeting place for you to enjoy with friends while in Cronulla. The much loved pirate ship playground was 27 years old, really showing its age, and replacement parts had become almost impossible to find. So we’ve decommissioned the pirate ship and created a new play space for kids of all ages to enjoy at the northern end of the mall. Your favourite shops around Ocean Grove Avenue are remaining open during construction.

Tunnel visionEighteen years ago students from high schools all over Sutherland Shire poured their creative hearts and souls into Cronulla’s iconic Tonkin Tunnel, with the murals they created illuminating the space and capturing the essence of the Cronulla community. This summer our next generation of local budding artists are doing the same. Year nine and ten students from seven local high schools (pictured) are designing new artworks to be painted onto the walls and ceilings of the Tonkin Tunnel. This is part of a seven-week TAFE course organised by Council and local artist Tim ‘Phibs’ who will be unleashing his own creative talents on a mural outside the tunnel to compliment the students work. The new tunnel artwork will be complete by the end of January 2018.

Carousel fun for everyoneWe’re always looking for more opportunities to provide inclusive activities and infrastructure for you to enjoy. In many circumstances inclusive play equipment is locked up and only available for a limited time – but we’re changing that! Parc Menai has a new wheelchair carousel for everybody to enjoy, at any time. The carousel can fit two wheelchairs and a number of kids or adults, so everyone can have fun together.

Enriching our livesA good choice of tree, planted in the right location can increase your property’s value, improve the health and wellbeing of you and your family, provide privacy for your home, reduce your energy consumption bills and create a safer neighbourhood. We want to make sure trees remain a distinctive part of Sutherland Shire’s character.By planning and investing in good quality tree planting, maintenance and removal we can make sure our gorgeous green suburbs are there for future generations.

Planting for the future

To ensure future generations can enjoy the same leafy Shire we have grown to cherish, we are implementing a strategic approach to replenishing Sutherland Shire’s ageing tree canopy.Starting November, we will be targeting main roads to identify trees that need replacing as well as looking for opportunities for additional planting. We’ll be working on 1-kilometre sections at a time along these major roads. If you live along one of these roads, please keep an eye out for your invitation to be a part of the process to help us look after these trees.  For more info call 9710 0333 and ask about our Green Streets Program.

Top environmental gongOur Green Streets Program took out the ‘Excellence in the Environment Award’ at the prestigious Local Government Awards. The award was for innovation in planning, policies and decision making through our model for bringing back our indigenous tree canopy.Through this program over 7420 trees have been planted across Sutherland Shire - bringing many health, social, economic and environmental benefits.

You’re welcome to come along to Bushcare group gatherings and see what we’re all about. You’ll learn expert tips for nurturing native plants and even make new friends!Bushcare groups are listed by suburb on our website at sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/Community/Volunteering/Bushcare-Volunteers/Bushcare-Locations.

Splashing some cash on our little pockets of lovelinessWe are blessed with an outstanding local natural environment that includes over 1000 parks and reserves. Our Bushland unit works hard to preserve these little islands of remnant vegetation from threats such as storm water, urban runoff, weed invasion and pest infestations. To help look after these areas, we have successfully secured $136,684 in grant funding from the Department of Lands and Forestry. These funds will help Bushcare combat threats to biodiversity on Crown Land under our care. We’re pleased to announce this year’s projects:

Be a Recycling Star at ChristmasMake sure you’re on Santa’s ‘nice’ list this Christmas by reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

Take reusable shopping bags when you head to the shops.  If you do use a plastic bag, take it back to the supermarket so that it can be recycled through the REDcycle program.

Get creative and reuse wrapping paper and cards. They make great craft items or can be used again next year. When buying wrapping paper, remember shiny metallic foil cannot be recycled.

Take any excess cardboard or paper that doesn’t fit in your yellow recycling bin straight to the Visy Recycling Facility at 43 Bay Road, Taren Point for free disposal.

Aluminium disposable baking trays can be recycled in your yellow recycling bin.  Just roll them into a ball and make sure they are clean of any food.

Give a recharger pack with any battery operated gifts – it will save money and reduce waste.

Take your real Christmas tree on Saturday 6 January 2018 to our Council woodchipping service.

Free and safe chemical cleanoutHere’s your chance to get rid of any leftover chemicals such as paint, cleaning products, pesticides and pool chemicals. We’re hosting a Chemical CleanOut over three days, including a weekend and a Monday. Make a note in your diary now and visit Council’s website for more information.Saturday 10, Sunday 11 and Monday 12 February  2018 9am to 3.30pmBellingara Netball Car Park, 99-105 Bellingara Road Miranda

Regular rubbish collection over festive season, so your bins won’t get festyCollections for garbage, recycling and garden waste bins continue as usual over the public holidays, so ensure that your bins are out the night before your normal collection day.
