MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LANTUNDA SHADOW PUPPET PLAY I would like to take the opportunity to say
congratulations to our 5/6 students who
did an outstanding job in writing,
creating and performing the Pollard
Garden shadow puppet play on
Saturday night. Students worked
tirelessly with our visiting artists
Debbie, Lana and Mary along with
Ms Azzopardi and Ms Vella to create a
wonderful story about Pollard Gardens
and the creatures who live in them.
Thank you to all the families that came
along to support the students and I trust
you enjoyed the show. Well done team.
We are very proud of you all!
CURRICULUM DAY We had a very productive day working
with our Numeracy consultant Kathy
Palmer. The main focus of the day was
developing a deeper understanding of
Mathematics and how children learn.
Teachers explored different ways to
engage students in Numeracy concepts.
The YUMI Maths concept is about taking
abstract concepts and making them
real and practical which helps students
gain a greater understanding of what
can be complex ideas. Teachers have
already started using new ideas in
classrooms which the students are really
enjoying.
NAPLAN Next week all our Year 3 and 5
students will participate in the National
Literacy and Numeracy testing program.
These will take place over three days.
The results of these tests provide
information for students, parents,
teachers and principals alike concerning
the progress of our students which can
be used to support teaching and
learning programs. Please see the
timetable below. We wish all our Year 3
and 5 students the best of luck!
ENROLMENTS FOR PREP 2017 It’s that time of the year where we
commence our formal process of
enrolments for Prep students commenc-
ing school in 2017. Students will need to
turn five years of age by the 30 April,
2017. If you have a child who will be
coming to school for the first time in 2016
please complete an enrolment form, (available from the office), at your earliest
convenience. I would also appreciate it,
if parents would let other families in the
community know that we are currently
accepting enrolments for next year.
New parents to the school are encouraged
to make an appointment to see myself for
a tour of the school.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL I hope all our Mum’s have a wonderful
day on Sunday and enjoy the special
gifts from your children.
A big thank you to Sonia,
Rebecca, Helen, Heidi,
Lyn, Michelle and Anna
for making the stall a
great success.
FAREWELL I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Felicity for her valuable
contribution to our school as School
Council President. We all wish Otis, Nina,
Felicity and Simon all the very best on
their move to the NSW cost.

PREP L & PREP/1 E During our Reading lessons this term, students will be learning about the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts and will practise comprehension strategies such as asking questions when they read. We will continue to develop strategies to decode unknown words when reading such as using the letter-sound relationship and using picture cues. During our Writing lessons, students will continue to practise their letter formation and write a simple recount and procedural text. In Numeracy, students are continuing to count and are all very excited to be celebrating 50 days at school! We will be investigating patterns and learn about two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Students will be modelling addition and subtraction using hands on materials.
Our Term Two Inquiry unit, ‘Watch It Move!’ will allow students to explore the properties and attributes of different objects made out
of different materials, sizes and shapes. The students enjoyed the Incursion run by ‘Hands On Science’ yesterday where they looked at forces (push and pull) and conducted experiments on what factors may help or hinder objects to move.
3/4 L & 3/4 K In Reading, students are focussing on the following comprehension strategies: questioning, prior knowledge and predictions, summarising, ‘testing as a genre’ strategies eg. reciprocal teaching routine, and features of fiction and non-fiction texts.
In Writing, students are exploring two genres, persuasive and explanations. They are applying the process of writing: planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Students continue to receive spelling words based on their individual needs. Please support your child in learning their spelling words each night using the strategy look, say, cover, write, check.
During the term a Numeracy will focus on place value of large numbers, counting and addition, patterns in numbers, time, location, chance and data collection. Students continue to reflect at the end of each numeracy session about what they have learnt.
This term Inquiry topic is Our Precious Earth. Students will
explore Earth’s formations, how they change over time and
how to preserve them for future generations. They will be
collecting evidence about different landforms. Students will work
collaboratively to make suggestions about how to prevent future
negative impact.

5/6 K & 5/6 O In Literacy this term, students will focus on ‘testing as a genre’ in preparation for NAPLAN. In Reading, the comprehension focus will be on the strategies of Questioning, Summarising and Visualising to assist the students becoming more confident and capable readers. In Writing, the focus will be on developing our writing skills in the areas of Narratives as well as Informational Writing focusing on biographies. In Numeracy during Term Two, in addition to NAPLAN preparation, we are learning about fractions, decimals, measurement, time, money and chance and data. Additionally, a weekly mental math's program to support students with their automatic recall of number facts and strategies is in full swing. We encourage students to regularly practise this automatic recall of number facts, including all times tables and division facts.
During this term’s Inquiry, ‘A Portal to the Past’, we will explore
Australia’s history and development from convict settlement, colonisation and migration by investigating significant individuals or groups from these times. We will explore Melbourne and Australia’s history of immigration and its impact on our development.
An excursion to the Immigration Museum is planned for Tuesday 14 June.

Music Update
What a great turnout last Saturday for our Shadow Puppet Lantunda project. Julie Vella and I would like to thank
everyone involved, from the artists who came to our school each week for teaching and developing our puppeteer-
ing skills, Brimbank council and Lyn Read for allowing our school to be involved and especially the students who did
an amazing job on performance night and for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout the project. A special
thank you to the parents for letting your child be a part of the project and everyone who came along to the perfor-
mance night and supported our students.
Our second Concert Committee meeting will be held on Thursday 12 May at 1:40pm in the Art room. All welcome.
If you are unable to attend but would still like to help out in some way, please leave your name at the office and I will
be in contact.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate all the students who were involved in our school song writing workshop. I have
included the lyrics in this newsletter so all students can practise it.

The SPS Rap Hey, it’s Sunshine Primary School
We listen to our teachers
And we think it’s cool
We come to school, ev-ery-day
We’re always learning
That’s our way
Lilly the learner, loves to learn
All day long, and ev-ery term
We try our best, to be-have
Let’s all shout hip- hip-hooray
Respectful Ruby teaches us,
To listen and be kind, it’s a must
Sunshine kids respect everyone
Respecting is our way of fun
We want to feel, safe at school,
Safety Sam, tell us what to do
Safety house is open everyday
Just feel safe, it’s ok
The prep buddies, are our friends
We go to them, their help never ends
We love to shine, every time
We do our best, to help the rest
Sunshine kids, learn to share
Show they care and are always fair
When we’re hurt, or feel sad
The buddy bench makes us glad
100, plus 20, plus another 5
That’s how long our school’s been alive
We all love to sing along
What do you think of our brand new song?
