Zone Athletics Carnival – Day 1

On Tuesday the 3 September, Wiley Park Public School took a team of approximately 28 students to represent the school at the Wiley Park Zone Athletics Carnival. The weather was sensational and the students presented themselves with great sportsmanship. They cheered on fellow school mates and also students for other schools. They competed in 100m, 200m, 800m and relay events. Miss Shelton and Mrs Bonney were very proud of the way the students represented the school. All students put in 100% effort. A special mention to a few students: Jayden (Year 4) came 2nd in the zone for 200m under 10s, 3rd in the zone 100m under 10s. Malachi (Year3) came 2nd in the zone for 100m. Salma (Year3) made it to the finals for the 100m (top 8 in the zone). Nabeeha (Year 6) made it to the finals for the 100m Under 11s (top 8 in the zone). Our Junior boys relay also made it to the finals. Congratulations to all students who represented the school for the running events. REMINDER: Day 2 (Field events) Tuesday 17 September, Week 9.

Holidays Parents and teachers both get concerned when students fall behind in their studies because of long absences. Families who plan to travel are encouraged to travel during school holidays. Parents are reminded they must seek permission from the Principal to take a student out of school during term time. If you are planning to take your child out of school during term time, please see the front office as a form will need to be completed for the duration of your child’s absence. (An itinerary or airline ticket must also be provided).

And taking breaks to spend time outdoors is an option that has stood the test of time for a reason. We need to have those eyes reaching the horizon, not crammed in on a phone or iPad.

Too much screen Time linked To an epidemic of myopia among young people

Sort sightedness, or myopia is on the rise…. and at an alarming rate.

Experts warn that this is because of the amount of time young people are

spending looking at screens. Therefore, using any electronic

media before the age of two should be avoided, even if it’s only for a

few minutes. A limit of one hour per day should be the rule for those

between two and five years of age and the emphasis should be put on educational sites or applications

that promote interactions between the parent and child.

The following links give helpful information about myopia. https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/twoyearolds-life-ruined-by-excessive-smartphone-use/news-story/2be97877e06f120b077188cf398b7058 https://theconversation.com/too-much-screen-time-linked-to-an-epidemic-of-myopia-among-young-people-111599 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-13/watching-videos-on-phone-leading-to-surge-in-eyesight-issues/9538776

LOST PROPERTY Parents/Carers Many items are often found around the school that belong to your child/ren. Please remember to label every item that belongs to your child/ren. These items are very expensive to replace. Remember if your child/ren loses or misplaces anything, there is a lost property box just outside the back of the staffroom. Thank you for your co-operation.

General information If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please DO NOT stop them in morning lines. Lessons start at 9am and the morning routine is an important one to maintain. A message can be left with the office for the class teacher to make an appointment with you, should you need to see them. From time to time, issues or disagreements may occur between students. It is the responsibility of school staff to deal with these matters. We would ask all parents/carers to bring these matters to the attention of a staff member or to the Principal, Mrs Demos, rather than approaching students and discussing matters directly with them.

On Monday 9 September, the students in the Support Unit were lucky enough to have a visit from GIFT A SMILE, a non for profit organisation in the community who visit Support Units in schools and provide a goody bag filled with toys and sensory items that add a smile to a student’s life. Thank you to GIFT A SMILE for their visit with balloons and a goody bag. It really made our day.
