Term 3, Issue 1 Thursday 27 July 2017

I would like to remind all parents, and members of the community, that the consumption of tobacco and alcohol on school premises is prohibited; below are direct quotes from the New South Wales Department of Education Policies in regards to this:

1.4 Alcohol

1.4.1

Alcohol must not be consumed or brought to school premises during school hours. This includes employees, students and visitors and other people who use school premises. In the case of cross-sectoral sites (e.g. joint school/TAFE sites), a decision regarding the extent of ‘school premises’ will need to be made in the local context. 1.4.2

The consumption of alcohol is not permitted at any school function (including those conducted outside school premises) at any time when school students, from

any school, are present. A school function is any function organised by the school and/or in the name of the school and applies to all types of functions including dances, farewells, sporting fixtures and barbecues.

1.5 Tobacco

1.5.1

Smoking on school premises, including school buildings, gardens, sports fields and car parks, is prohibited. This includes students, employees, visitors and other people who use school premises, including community groups.

I thank everyone, in advance, for adhering to the request

of not consuming either of these products on the school

premises.

Managing Type 1 Diabetes

in Children:

A Parenting Perspective

Being a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes can be extremely stressful.

The University of Queensland is seeking parents of children with type 1 diabetes to take part in a research study that will explore factors that could help or hinder parents in managing their child’s diabetes. If you are a parent of a 2 to 10 year old child with type 1 diabetes, we would love to hear from you!

By sharing your experiences (confidentially) you will help us identify better ways for health care professionals to support parents and families.

To complete the online survey, please go to: https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/type1/.

For further information about the project or to request a survey to be posted to you, call Dr Amy Mitchell at the Parenting and Family Support Centre at The University of Queensland on (07)3346-1202 or email Jade Grambower at [email protected]

Food for thought… Welcome back for term 3 and, I trust that you

enjoyed the two week winter vacation with your

children?

I was reading Saturday’s papers on the weekend

when I came across the article attached, stating that

we, as a State should consider developing a mode of

selective primary schools, similar to those which we

have for secondary schools (Selective High

Schools).

At Granville Public School, WE (the Royal WE)

have worked hard to ensure that our children are

exposed to a verity of teachers, throughout the week

which ensure that they are learning through a verity

of pedagogical, teaching, practices which reflect the

latest in research with regards learning and

teaching.

I feel that, at Granville Public School, we cater for

all of our children, ensuring that they are given

every opportunity to not only achieve to their fullest

potential but, also be extended beyond this.

What are your thoughts? I would be very interested

to hear them – please email your thoughts;

The Sydney Morning Herald JULY 22, 2017

NSW should have 'selective primary schools' for gifted

children: academic

NSW should consider selective primary schools for

its most gifted students and give them the same

early intervention as students with special needs,

according to a leading academic in gifted education.

Jae Jung, a senior lecturer in the University of

NSW's school of education and a lead researcher of

gifted education, said primary schools modelled

after the state's 48 selective high schools could be

the solution to Australia's "neglect" of its brightest

students that is leading to its sliding performance at

the international level.ime1:49 0%

"We're not taking care of gifted students at the lower

primary level," Dr Jung said. "The earlier education-

al intervention is provided, the more likely their

potential will be realised.

"These are the students who will find cures to major

medical conditions and make a real difference to the

lives of others, but they're the ones we're

neglecting."

A spokesman for the NSW Department of

Education did not rule out the option of selective

primary schools and said that the department "is

currently reviewing the Gifted and Talented Policy

and the updated policy is expected to be released

later this year".

Principals can already "create classes that best meet

the needs of their community, this includes classes

especially formed for high performing and talented

students", he said.

However, the first formal chance for gifted students

to enter special classes is in Year 5, through oppor-

tunity classes that separate the highest-achieving

students for the final two years of primary school.

This year, 11,849 Year 4 students will compete for

1740 places when they sit the opportunity class

placement test on Wednesday.

Dr Jung said more opportunity classes should be

made available and expanded across all primary

years.

"If there's political resistance to selective primary

schools, we could have opportunity classes at all

levels of primary school," Dr Jung said.

"Because gifted students aren't being identified,

they're bored in the classroom and some become

disinterested in school."

Dr Jung said that up to half of all gifted students in

primary and high schools are found to be

"underachieving significantly".

He said a major part of the problem is that teachers

are not required to learn how to identify or teach

gifted students as part of their pre-service training.

"Special education training has been mandatory

since the early 1990s but nearly 30 years later,

there's still no requirement for teachers to get trained

in gifted education," Dr Jung said.

"Australia is an egalitarian society and there's al-

ways a focus on helping those with

special needs, but we're ignoring

students at the other end of the

spectrum."
