For this year, 2013, we have given $31,316.28 toward our district’s

Pledge to Mission goal of $48,000. This is 65.2 %, but we would

like to reach 100%. With just two months left in the year, we have

to really get going. At this time, 9 units have either not remitted

anything at all towards the mission pledge…or, have not paid the

full amount. Hopefully, these units plan on giving soon.

The good news is that 18 of the 27 active units in our district have

already fulfilled their Pledge to Mission. That’s great! Of course,

we all need to consider giving to the other four areas of mission

giving, also. They are Special Mission Recognition, Gift to

Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. These four

ways of giving help us to meet our Mission Pledge, too.

Thinking ahead to 2014, 15 of the 27 active units have made their

Pledge to Mission for a total of $23,955. But that means there are

quite a few units, 12 to be exact, that still need to send their Pledge

to Mission in to me. Please consider that as part of your agenda at

your next meeting.

I extend my best wishes to everyone for a very blessed holiday

season.

Secretary

Greetings as we close out our calendar year. I hope everyone has enjoyed

this lovely fall weather, and by now perhaps you are gearing up for the big

holidays.

I have attended the District Annual Gathering and the Conference Annual

Gathering and had a chance to connect with a lot of our faithful UMW units.

My next job is to put together the Annual Yearbook in time to distribute it

at our Day Apart event. Hopefully you have all elected your officers for 2014 and

can report them to me in a timely fashion. You will find the 2014 LOCAL UNIT

ELECTED LEADERSHIP form in this issue of the UNITER on the next page.

Some folks have already reported to me that their entire slate of officers (or

many of them) remains the same. In this case I suggest that you check all of the

info in the 2013 Yearbook to make sure there are no errors. Also if anyone of you

has an active e-mail address that was not included in the previous yearbook please

send that on to me. For those officers that remain the same, you can simply write

“same”. It is important to have as many e-mail addresses as possible, so that if we

need to inform local units of something in a timely fashion we can use e-mail.

Postage is too expensive, and “phone tag “ is no fun.

For any new information, please type or print neatly. It is easy enough to

make mistakes when I can read the info correctly, and trying to decipher cursive

makes errors almost certain.

Also let me remind you that If your president or program resources person

has changed, you need to report that to the Service Center for which the address is

provided on the new form.

Some of you tried to reach me using the phone no. in the previous

UNITER. There was an error of one digit and you reached the sheriff’s office.

Sorry about that. The number is correct on the form in this UNITER and in the

yearbook. I’m sure that the sheriff’s office also is very unhappy about this error,

but “things happen”.

Thank you all in advance for your help in providing the needed info for the

2014 yearbook. You all make it possible for me to do my job.

I wish for all of us a mild winter, happy holidays, and a successful 2014 for

our UMW local units.

Social Action

I wish more of you would have taken advantage of the Children’s Sabbath

offered by Northcott Neighborhood House October 24th. It was spiritually

uplifting and information packed. As you and your units approach the end

of the year and a time to look at your resources, please think about a special

gift to Northcott! Their partner did not receive the Head Start Grant they

depended upon. This means that 275 children had to find another place for

Head Start and 54 teachers and staff were terminated. In addition, the

wonderful new homes “Fresh Start” has built are not yet sold and the costs

of those home loans are continuing every month. I can’t think of a more

needed program than Fresh Start. Young persons get GED’s, they learn a

craft under the guidance of a skilled craftsman, the homes they build are

beautiful. Their neighborhood is upgraded. Treat yourself, take a tour of

Northcott and see one of these new homes for yourself – but, in the

meantime, Send Northcott an additional Christmas Gift this month.

Other Concerns related to the Sabbath about children and poverty.

Poverty is like a disease. It infects our brains with malnourishment

and they function at a much lower rate. (learning is less, retention is less,

comprehension fluctuates). It infects the whole body so it becomes more

susceptible to other illnesses, eg. colds become pneumonia. Did you know

the zipcode 53233 has the highest infant mortality rate in the U.S.?

Fortunately the WIC program continues to support pregnant mothers and

their children. The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program is still

languishing in a Joint Committee in D.C. because legislators can’t decide to

cut it 50% or 100%! SNAP is more than elementary school lunches; it is

elderly and college student meals.

Poverty and Violence feed each other. Numerous children under the

age of five have already seen killings, gunshot wounds and beatings. Is it

any wonder the violence of our culture is perpetuated? A child is killed every

3-1/2 hours in the U.S. Northcott is a safe haven – for children, youth and

families.

November 2013 Uniter Page 11

Racism exacerbates both Poverty and Violence. Employment

opportunities, living conditions, education are all affected by Racism.

Milwaukee bears the title of the most segregated city in the U.S. Just look

up the statistics under “The City of Milwaukee” and read what is happening

to 600,000 people.

We know the drill here. Do not allow you and your unit to become

apathetic. How long has it been since your unit used the Charter for Racial

Justice Policy Program prepared by our Wisconsin Team each year for our

use? Work it in!

One Bright Spot! THE TEEN BIRTHRATE HAS BEEN

REDUCED 50%!

A most UNHOLY Trinity exists in our most impoverished areas.

Racism is the base. Poverty and Violence are the two other sides. UMW has

long worked at illeviating these conditions, but we cannot do it alone. We

need the help of our state and federal programs. We need to talk long and

hard to our elected officials and become like the nagging woman in Luke

18:1-8. Keep pushing until we get the response our children need! Our

Nation has a GDP of more than $15 trillion. Surely, we can afford to take

care of our future – our children!

PROGRAM RESOURCES

I hope those of you who attended the combined Annual Celebration in Hartford found the

day enjoyable and productive. The Hartford UMW unit really did a great job hosting this

event. I was able to report that 13 units out of 27 participated in the 2013 UMW Reading

Program and the 2013 number of readers totaled 54. Plan 1 had the greatest number of

participants, but the other levels had good representation. Of course, everyone who

participates is a winner because each book read is a great learning experience.

This year, for the first time, my unit bought two books, Small Things with Great Love

(Adventures in Loving Your Neighbor) and On This Spirit Walk (The Voices of Native

American and Indigenous Peoples), and we intend to have discussion groups based on

these books. So the 2014 UMW Reading Program promises to be another most

interesting year for reading and learning.

When I packed up after the Annual Celebration, I found a disturbing trend and/or

potential problem regarding providing supplies for Metro South District UMW meetings.

For the Annual Celebration, in addition to UMW Program Books, Prayer Calendars,

officer handbooks, mission study books, and free materials, I ordered 84 books for the

2014 Reading Program. Eight books were not shipped, so I had 76 books to sell. After

the sale, I shipped back 53, meaning I only sold 23 books from the Reading Program.

The national UMW pays for the shipping to district events, but the district is responsible

for paying the return shipping costs. I have focused on the number of Reading Program

books that were returned because they are readily available from other sources, usually at

a lower price.

The annual Day Apart will be held in January 2014, and Metro South is responsible for

providing program resources. My question for you is: Shall I order the 84 books for the

2014 Reading Program, with the great possibility that I will have to return the majority

after the Day Apart. I would appreciate your input on this matter before the middle of

December as that is when I have to order program resources for Day Apart.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Pastor Mary Counsel Austin emailed this to many people and because our

spiritual growth coordinator is vacant thought the UMW readers would like this as food for thought in our Spiritual Growth!

'If God is for us, who can be against us?'

(Romans 8:31)

1. Pray

2. Go to bed on time.

3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.

4. Say No to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that will

compromise your mental health.

5. Delegate tasks to capable others.

6. Simplify and unclutter your life.

7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too

many.)

8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time;

don't lump the hard things all together.

10. Take one day at a time.

11. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out

what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do

anything about a situation, forget it.

12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary

purchases.

13.. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key

buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.

14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an

enormous amount of trouble.

15. Do something for the Kid in You every day.

16. Carry a spiritually enlightening book with you to read while waiting

in line.

17. Get enough rest.

18. Eat right.

19. Get organized so everything has its place.

20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of

life.

21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.

22. Every day, find time to be alone.

23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems

in the bud. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray.

24. Make friends with Godly people.

25.. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.

26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often

a good 'Thank you Jesus .'

27. Laugh.

28. Laugh some more!

29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.

30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

31.. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).

32. Sit on your ego.

33. Talk less; listen more.

34. Slow down.

35. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.

36. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that

you've never been grateful for before.

in mission, looking at the sacramental understandings of baptism and communion and lifting up models of response to God’s

call. Stories of call and response are shared from a wide array of persons from different

walks of life.

Presented by Pastor Scott Walters

This Study is a geographic in nature with an emphasis on Eastern Europe. You will

discover their history up to and including the twentieth century. You can look into the ways they are treated in contemporary

European culture. You will also be able to learn about their lifestyle and spirituality,

and investigate ways the church and other organizations are working alongside the

Roma.

2013. We Make It Happen: A Living Timeline

Honoring our United Methodist Women members

The United Methodist Women national office launched a mixed-media engagement project—We Make It

Happen: A Living Timeline—on Tuesday, October 1. The ongoing submissions will be posted on

Facebook and Pinterest. Through various means of written and artistic expression, this project asks women

to tell the stories of United Methodist Women members who have inspired them: their mothers,

grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters, nieces, goddaughters and friends.

This “Living Timeline” will be unveiled at the United Methodist Women 2014 Assembly, held in April

2014, in Louisville, Ky.

In the spirit of sisterhood we wanted to find out how members bring about change in their communities and

around the world. So we started asking the questions: How does the United Methodist Women

member in your life inspire you? How is she an inspiration to others? What does she do to show

unwavering support of women, children and youth? We want to know because we want to share with the

world how our members rely on their faith, hope and love in action to Make It Happen for those deemed

“the least,” Christ’s kin.

Girls' Night Out at LEGACY Women

Girls' Night Out that LEGACY Women, the conference's young women's

committee, put on during Annual Gathering this year was held on October

18-19th 2013. We had a lock-in for girls in 7th-12th grade at Wellspring

UMC, less than 10 minutes away from Asbury UMC where the adult UMW

festivities were held! The night started with their registration 30 minutes

before Annual Gathering's (5:00pm on Friday) and ended their event 30

minutes after Annual Gathering finishes (~3:30pm on Saturday) in order to

give our participants' drivers time to get from church to church. Chaperones

were provided at the event so if any youth's parents wanted to go to Annual

Gathering they did!

Our event started at 6:30pm on Friday night with a worship and welcoming

service. If you had to travel from a distance, you didn’t need to worry about

bringing youth late as they had activities going all night long! They did

things ranging from a mission project for Wellspring, to watching a movie,

to getting eco-friendly spa treatments (pictured above) to making t-shirts.

If you were only planning on coming to Annual Gathering on Saturday you

could also bring your teen down with you for the day. They began Saturday

registration at 8:00am and their program started with morning worship at

9:00am. Saturday was all about leadership development. We were lucky

enough to have Marva Usher-Kerr from the National UMW office giving our

workshop. Its focus was on Esther 4:14 which says, "For if you remain

November 2013 Uniter Page 28

silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another

place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that

you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

The girls brainstormed what they can bring home to their churches.

We really wanted them to see that they are Esther’s and that they can affect

the world through mission work and their involvement with UMW.

The Friday dinner was on their own before the girls arrived. They had some

snacks for Friday but girls were encouraged to also bring their own. For

breakfast they had cereal, fruit, juice, and bagels and for lunch they ordered

pizza from one of the local places in town and along with salad. If anyone

had any food allergies they did their best to accommodate. Each youth

attending was asked to bring: sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, snacks, a bible,

a change of clothes for Saturday, and some grungy clothes to wear during

Friday night's mission project.

The cost to attend this event was only $5.00. If you are going to Annual

Gathering next year, consider giving girls from your church a ride down to

their event! If you have any questions please call our legacy member

Rebecca Yang at 414-704-2365.

It was exciting to meet young United Methodist Women from everywhere

around our conference!

HMONG HOUSE WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR,

INVITES PUBLIC TO LEARN ABOUT HMONG CULTURE

Rev. Nhia Wahn Her recently accepted the position of Director at Hmong House of Good News, which

operates several days a week at Central UMC in Milwaukee. Rev. Her, a first generation Hmong immigrant

to the United States, said since the position became vacant, friends and colleagues urged him to consider

applying because he has a passion for helping the elderly. He said it is his calling and he is still exploring

the position and learning every day about the community. He explained that there is a great need for this

kind of ministry and prays that the Hmong House will grow as he continues to reach out to the community.

He hopes to do just that at the Hmong House’s annual meeting at 2 p.m. on November 10 at Central UMC,

where he will share a presentation about the Hmong religion, Shamanism, and the Hmong culture and its

traditions. All are invited to the event that will also feature displays, singing, worship and refreshments.

Rev. Her said, “The food, the clothing… all of that is secondary to the Hmong culture . . . the real culture is

what Hmong believe.” Rev. Her also said if United Methodist Women are interested in learning even more

about the Hmong culture or if they are interested in more information about Hmong House of Good News,

they are invited to contact him at (920) 562-9594 and set up a time for him or a representative to come to

your church and give a presentation.

We are excited and so grateful to the Kenwood United Methodist Women and church for

allowing us to have an egg roll sale. We fed A LOT of hungry college students and raised enough

to keep Hmong House open for another week. Also Metro North and South Annual Celebration

donated 1/3 or their offering to HHGN. Our heartfelt thank you.

How Can You Help the Hmong House of Good News?

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO DO GOD'S WORK: Hmong House of Good News is seeking volunteers to help in a few different capacities to be able to better serve the Hmong seniors that now and

will one day utilize the center. We need:

a lawyer to advise, medical personnel to provide screenings and education

social workers to provide advice, brokerage services and advocacy, one on one volunteers

Translators. Please prayerfully consider helping this vulnerable group of people. For information or to make a

commitment, please contact Cheryl Mallow at 920-261-6140 or [email protected].

Would you like to help drive our elders? We will pay you mileage.

or would like to attend this event or schedule one for your UMW or church you can get in touch

with Kady Her Yang 414-704-2365. We would like to host 5 of these in 2014.

UMW Mission Visits. We are always excited to share our testimony and joy to be at Hmong House with our visitors. Why don’t you plan to come and join us? Just give our director a call at

Hmong House of Good News 639 N 25th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233, 414-342-4380 or

email us at [email protected].

Good News, c/o Treasurer Patsy Ruppe, 2427 Sunrise Rd., Racine, WI 53402, or to the Wisconsin

Annual Conference UMC Treasurer, 750 Windsor St., Sun Prairie, WI 53590. Indicate Advance #7809.

or your unit sign up to give Hmong House of Good News a designated amount either monthly or

yearly. You may choose to have the money taken automatically from your checking or savings account, or you may pay by check.
