From Father Gerald ….

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Thirty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time –Today’s Gospel is the parable of the foolish and wise virgins. It is a parable about the kingdom of heaven and who will enter and who will be left out-side the door wanting entrance. The five wise virgins have oil for their lamps and the five foolish do not. The wise do not share their oil, fearing they will not have enough for themselves, lead-ing us to wonder whether they responded appropriately or not to the foolish virgins. Ultimately, Jesus’ pointing telling the parable is for us to be prepared to enter the kingdom of heaven. Will the Lord know us? Will we know the Lord?

Suffering/ Sickness/ Care-Giving – A big thank you to Susan Duggan for her presentation and discussion this past Thursday. I pray that for those that attended, this was an opportunity which provided some rich reflection on a very important area of concern. May we always be mindful of our brothers and sisters who are sick and suffering, their caregivers, and our response to those who share in a portion of Christ’s Passion.

Understanding the Catholic Funeral Rites – This Thursday, November 16 at 7pm we will have a presentation in the Church on the three parts of the Roman Catholic Funeral Rites. 1) The Wake Service, 2) The Funeral Mass/Service, 3) The Burial. This will hopefully give those attending a better understanding as to why we do what we do surrounding the death of a loved one. Please also consider inviting someone you may know who can truly benefit from this presentation. At the end of the presentations we will have an opportunity for questions. Thank you Brother Peter and Cathy Driscoll-Cainen for your help with this evening.

Practice/Meeting with All Altar Servers – There will be a practice/meeting of the Altar Servers on Saturday, November 18 from 1pm – 2pm. Please plan to attend for a time of review and renewal of what we do and our schedules. Adam Scott has been asked to coordinate practices around the liturgies and Matthew Thompson along with some parents will help organize some of the outside events to keep us connected.

Assembly of the People of God 2017 – Last Friday evening and all day Saturday, the Archbishop hosted a renewal conference for our Archdiocese called Equip the Saints. It was truly a wonder-ful and grace-filled opportunity for the people across our Archdiocese to come together, to pray, reflect, and receive the challenge for the New Evangelization. Archbishop Mancini shared more in depth about the ongoing work for the Pastoral Plan for our parishes and our Archdio-cese. The Archbishop also spoke about the fact that the work on the civil restructuring of our Diocese and work on Corporation Sole has been withdrawn. There will be some restructuring of the Churches in our various regions throughout the Archdiocese from a canonical perspective. More information will be forthcoming as regional discussions take place.

Month of November – During the month of November, it is customary that we remember in each Mass our beloved dead. In each Mass that is celebrated we will have the Book of Remembrance which holds the names of all, whom we have lovingly written in the Book to be remembered. Feel free to add names through the month of November. If possible, plan a visit to the cemetery, to visit the grave of a loved and to pray for all the deceased. There is an indulgence attached to that particular act.

Installation of Kitchen Vents – This past week we have installed the new ventilation system in our kitchen in the Parish Hall. This is great news as now it will allow us to utilize our kitchen for the preparation of meals for Margaret House. This extends the possibilities for the safe use of our kitchen combined with the fact that we had several people take the food handling course.

Processional Candles – A few donors contributed to help us reach the goal of purchasing new processional candles for our Church in Memory of a loved one who died. Thank you to Anne James (In Memory of her mother Rae James) Myrna Hetherington (In Memory of her husband Bill Hetherington), Judy Dompierre (In Memory of her father Allan Naugle), Frank Matthews (In Memory of his wife Lorraine), Betty Rhynold, (In Memory of a loved one ), and the Knights of Co-lumbus (In Memory of Brother Knights who have died).

EBINGO

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our archdiocesan collections. We count on your support to maintain and grow pro-grams and services throughout the Archdio-cese of Halifax-Yarmouth. You may have no-ticed a change in 2016 in how collections are taken up in our Archdiocese – as part of an overall restructuring we have reduced our diocesan collections from seven unrelat-ed collections to three collections focusing on a common purpose: Mission, Communi-ty, and Formation. Please prayerfully consider your contribu-tion to this important diocesan collection. Funds received will help us to support one another to equip the saints – all of us! – for the work of ministry.

WEEKEND OF GRACE 2018

“Let us love, not with words, but with deeds” Pope Francis has declared Sunday November 19, 2017 as the first World Day of the Poor. In his mes-sage regarding this day, the Holy Father says "If we truly wish to encounter Christ, we have to touch his body in the suffering bodies of the poor, as a response to the sacramental communion bestowed in the Eucharist." We can all experience being poor at some point in our lives in different ways - materially, spiritually, or through loneliness. And when we share with each other in our poverty, we experience the presence of Christ in His divine mercy. The parish of St. Vincent de Paul, Dartmouth has been named the lead parish for the Archdiocese of Halifax/Yarmouth for this first World Day of the Poor. On Sunday, November 19th the parish will be hosting a Fellowship Meal for people from the community who may be in need of nourishment of the body and soul. We are inviting anyone who would like to share in an afternoon of music, games, conversation and a beautiful meal being offered by the Knights of Columbus to join us in the parish centre. We are especially interested in welcoming seniors, people who live alone, or who may not otherwise have this opportunity for fellowship to join us. If you know anyone who could benefit from an invitation to this event, please see the poster in the lob-by of the parish for invitation cards to hand out, or encourage guests to RSVP to (902) 435-2500 exten-sion 6 or by email to [email protected] Children welcome!

REFORMATION 500

From Conflict to Communion This fall Catholics and Lutherans in Canada are holding joint services to commemorate the 500th anni-versary of the reformation as well as 50 years of Lutheran-Catholic dialogue. Bishop Michael Pryse, the Lutheran bishop of the Eastern Synod of ELCIC will co-preside with local Catholic bishops at services in Toronto, Kitchener, Ottawa, Sudbury, Lunenburg and Montreal. These services of common prayer prepared by the Liturgical Task Force of the Lutheran-Catholic Commission on Unity mark a very spe-cial moment in our journey from conflict to communion. They offer an opportunity to look back in thanksgiving and confession, and to look ahead, committing ourselves to common witness and contin-uing our journey. All are welcome to take part in the service of common prayer that will take place in Lunenburg on Sun-day, November 19 at 2:30 pm at Zion Lutheran Church with Lutheran Bishop Pryse and our Archbishop Mancini co-presiding. The pastors of Zion Lutheran and St. Norbert’s have worked together with the rep-resentatives of their respective bishops for the detailed planning, choosing hymns and selecting local people for various roles, as well as making arrangements for the hospitality to follow in the Anglican parish hall a block away.
