what matters most to your clients? Our clients are talented and passionate about their work, and they value outstanding legal guidance together with practical solutions that reflect an understanding of the challenges they face and the core issues that drive their business.

How do you relax?Spending time with family and friends.

Name: Jonathan ClarkeLocation: IstanbulPractice Group: Corporate

what quality do you admire most in people? I am a fan of pluralism, so my initial reaction would be to cheat and say that I admire admiring different qualities in different people. However, if I had to pick one, I would say authenticity (closely followed by kindness).

what was the best day of your life? I did a very happy ‘swallow dive’ onto my school’s cricket outfield when I got accepted to the University that I wanted. Sadly, I could not repeat this when I got my recent news (there’s lack of cricketing outfields in Istanbul!). However, the best day of my life was without a doubt the day when my son, Baris, was born.

Name: Jacek Gizinski Location: warsawPractice Group: Corporate

How do you judge success at work?Being able to build a strong business case while at the same time being liked by others (including clients and colleagues).

what superpower would you like? The ability to be in two places at the same time. This would be very helpful in improving my work-life balance - which in my case is not actually that bad!

Name: rob McKieLocation: sheffieldPractice Group: Corporate

what motivates you most in your job?Working in a profession where you are continually challenged, and which enables you to learn and develop is what makes getting up in the morning that bit easier. The exhilaration of completing a large, complex transaction is second only to seeing a business that you have acted for being successful.

where’s your favourite place in the world?I would say Sydney. Despite having the worst weather in its history when I visited (that happens a lot to places I visit, especially on holiday!), and having seen every indoor activity the city has to offer, I absolutely loved it and would go back tomorrow.

what has been the highlight of your DLa Piper career? There were several special moments since I joined DLA Piper in 2008 - when we started to build a fully dedicated employment team in Romania using the enthusiasm of team members and the support of all colleagues. Of course, becoming a partner is another one.

How do you relax? I am passionate about my work, but I also value the moments when I can relax such as when I am travelling, dancing, playing volleyball or simply enjoying the wonders of a live butterfly garden.

what quality do you admire most in people?I admire people who know what they want, who are successful in life and in their job but who also care for others and remain ‘down to earth’.

what was the best day of your life?Fortunately, I have had so many great days in my life that it is difficult to distinguish one as the best. What all of these great days have in common is that I shared them with friends and/or family.

what motivates you most in your job? I work with technology companies, investors who fund them and companies who buy them. With tech companies and investors, there is a sense that everyone is trying to do something innovative. That drive to develop something new creates excitement and urgency even with relatively ordinary transactions.

where’s your favorite place in the world?I’m a huge fan of Barcelona, so I’m thrilled to be going there with the firm in May this year. I visited Barcelona for a few weeks in college and loved the architecture, the art and the beach.

what qualities do you look for in a leader?A leader should be someone who inspires others, is confident in their beliefs, is willing to listen and learn from those around them and is able to motivate and empower others, working always to gain their trust. A positive attitude together with an ability to appear calm under pressure are also key strengths, particularly in the legal world.

what is your ideal alternative career?Thinking back to my teenage years, I would have to say a professional flutist. My flute was very much my life before I decided to study law, playing from the age of seven.

what does DLa Piper mean to you? It’s the only firm I’ve worked at during my career of which I’ve wanted to be a partner, with its impressive client list, high quality work and great people across the globe. Not forgetting a special mention for the fantastic, hard-working and hugely supportive London Debt Finance team.

who inspires you?People overcoming adversity in their daily lives. It puts having to do the occasional all-nighter on a deal into perspective.

what matters to your clients? Our clients seek long-term relationships with us as their strategic business partner - where we are ultimately invested in their success. They don’t want us to just advise on the law, but to help drive their projects to completion while collaborating with them to achieve their broader commercial objectives (and having a laugh along the way!).

what’s your favourite place in the world? This is tough! I’ve worked across many of our offices and travelled widely (for work and pleasure). So, my favourite place is anywhere that allows me to experience a new culture and pushes me out of my comfort zone!

what has been the highlight of your DLa Piper career thus far?First, we represented the State of Illinois and took the first state lottery asset to private management. Second, when New Jersey passed internet gaming legislation, it triggered a chain reaction of government interest.

what is your ideal alternative career?I would probably like to be part of a private equity or venture capital fund, investing in and managing the investments of certain media, entertainment and technology businesses. I find gardening and small-scale construction projects immensely satisfying as well. Perhaps a PE firm that invests in Home and Garden Television shows!

Name: Michael Kasdin Location: ChicagoPractice Group: Finance

what matters most to your clients? My clients want someone who understands their business and unique problems. They want practical advice instead of just information. They want a lawyer who sees the attorney-client relationship as a partnership, not just as a commoditized service.

How do you relax? One of the best ways to relax is to get behind the wheel of an airplane. There’s something about the white noise, the intense concentration required, the very rote procedures, and the amazing scenery that makes it impossible to worry about all the other nonsense going on. It’s very meditative.

Highlight of DLa Piper career thus far? Why, joining the esteemed ranks of the partnership, of course!

where’s your favorite place in the world? There is a spot atop the ruins of Old Yaffo in Israel where one can take in the magnificent view of the entire Tel Aviv beach, boardwalk, Marina, and the sparkling Mediterranean. My favorite place is a toss-up between there and my living room couch, located some 5000 miles away on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

what motivates you most in your job? Our clients are some of the brightest, most innovative and hardest working business people in the world. It is incredibly rewarding to work with them and help them accomplish their goals.

where’s your favorite place in the world? Durham, North Carolina – where I live.

Name: Lee McGuirkLocation: LondonPractice Group: IPt

who inspires you?My parents for their hard work and drive, and Jimmy Choo (or perhaps his shoes).

How do you judge success at work?Being a trusted business partner to long standing clients, valued for your contribution to their commercial decision-making processes and, of course, being taken by clients to film premieres!

Name: Natalia PakhomovskaLocation: KyivPractice Group: IPt

what has been your biggest achievement for a client?Signing rights assignment contracts with 300 IT guys in just several weeks, prior to acquisition of a software company by a client.

what would be the best day of your life?My best day would involve attending yoga class in the morning, having lunch with my family during the day and going to a concert of a favourite band with my friends in the evening (and, in between, reading the IP magazine of course!).

what has been the highlight of your DLa Piper career thus far?Participating in jury and ITC patent infringement trials. Trial work is the most exciting aspect of being a litigator. I also value working with intelligent, diligent, fun colleagues who have become close friends.

what is your ideal alternative career?Run Leslie Knope’s campaign for President.

what motivates you most in your job?The work that we do in assisting the Australian Government in some of the largest, most sensitive and most complex transactions that it undertakes.

what superpower would you like?

Superhuman powers of persuasion. This would benefit my clients, as contract negotiations would be so much more efficient if everyone just agreed with me. I would use my powers at partners’ meetings to implement important new policy initiatives (e.g. since 2004 I have been lobbying for a Dog Day Care Centre to be set up in the office so I can bring my dogs to work!).

Name: tao XuLocation: Northern VirginiaPractice Group: IPt

How do you judge success at work?Being respected by your colleagues and trusted by your clients.

what is your ideal alternative career?A chef with my own restaurant, which opens only when I feel like it, serves only what I like to eat, and charges exorbitant prices. Yes, the last part is the most important one.

Name: Cara edwards Location: New York Practice Group: Lit&reg

what motivates you most in your job?Finding creative solutions for our client’s stickiest problems with a team of wickedly smart, professionally dynamic and good-humored colleagues.

what would you invent to make your life easier?I would invent a cloning machine to be in multiple places at once! Then I could achieve my goal of being the best lawyer, wife, mother and friend simultaneously. Barring that, I’m hoping for the true pocket computer with the keyboard of a Blackberry, the functionality of an iPhone and the expandable screen of a mini iPad. Maybe then I would achieve my previous goal – without having to clone myself.

Name: Douglas Mateyaschuk Location: New YorkPractice Group: Lit&reg

what motivates you most in your job?The intellectual challenge and international scope of the work. Work-related travel to places like Jordan, the West Bank, Israel, Abu Dhabi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have helped me gain a perspective that continues to enrich my personal and professional life.

where’s your favorite place in the world?Anguilla. It is a relatively remote Caribbean island with beautiful beaches: one of the few places I have been recently without a trace of commercialism, and nobody brews Starbucks. It is a great place to recharge and pretend not to be able to access email.

Name: John Holahan Location: washington, DC Practice Group: Lit&reg (Gov’t affairs)

How do you judge success at work?I judge success by building longstanding relationships with clients that I consider my friends. These relationships that last throughout time are vital to my practice.

what is your ideal alternative career? My alternative career would be a football coach. I played football in college and I have a deep passion for the game. I would love to coach others and use my life experience to help build a winning team.

Name: Michael Holzhauser Location: FrankfurtPractice Group: Lit&reg

How do you judge success at work?By being regarded as a trusted adviser and having a team that is recognised as being innovative and passionate.

what would you invent to make your life easier?A remote control that can stop, pause, rewind and fast forward time.

Name: Jacques Jacobs Location: sydneyPractice Group: Lit&reg

what has been the highlight of your DLa Piper career? It is difficult to pick one particular highlight. There have been many. However, one of the most important highlights for me of this firm has always been its culture and people.

where’s your favourite place in the world? In summer, North Bondi Beach, Australia. In winter, the last ski run of the day at Cadrona, near Queenstown, New Zealand.

Name: David shawLocation: PerthPractice Group: Lit&reg

what skill would you like to develop? To become fluent in French. My school French lessons came flooding back to me on a recent trip to France, but I would love to be able to hold a decent conversation.

How do you relax?Cooking, with a glass of wine in hand. My photo is a very poor attempt at a Marco Pierre White (a British celebrity chef) impersonation, without the big hair!

How do you judge success at work? Results. A great result for a client is different in every case and circumstance. Achieving the desired result, and even reaching milestones on the way to achieving the result, provides an adrenaline rush and a great sense of personal accomplishment. Most importantly, consistently achieving great results brings opportunities to do it again.

what is your ideal alternative career?Architect, engineer or building contractor. While I enjoy developing, carrying out, and seeing the end results of a successful litigation strategy, I envy those who get to transform their ideas into something physical that others can see, utilize, and enjoy.

Name: John VukeljLocation: New YorkPractice Group: Lit&reg

How do you judge success at work?By demanding and giving the best of yourself even when no one is looking, doing to others as you would have them do to you, and finding humor no matter the circumstances.

what is your ideal alternative career?Undoubtedly, my ideal alternative career would involve being in a rock band. Go ahead and name one bad thing about being in a rock band. You can’t.

Name: todd NoonanLocation: sacramentoPractice Group: Lit&reg

what matters most to your clients? Understanding what they can and cannot achieve, and why.

How do you relax?Head to Lake Tahoe. The DLA Piper Sacramento office is only 100 miles from Tahoe, and I go there as often as I can with my family.

Name: Gregg GrainesLocation: ChicagoPractice Group: real estate

Name: Cara Nelson Location: BostonPractice Group: real estate

what motivates you most in your job?I am motivated the most by developing new client relationships and by bringing new opportunities to clients.

what is your ideal alternative career?I would own and be the pitmaster of a small BBQ place located in rural Texas.

what matters most to your clients? My clients want top-notch legal work, and they want it completed as quickly but as efficiently as possible.

what would you invent to make your life easier?I would create a duplicate of myself! How great would it be to actually be in two places at once?!

Name: Miguel BazLocation: MadridPractice Group: tax

what matters most to your clients? Being very closed to their needs and understanding their business, so we can be proactive in our advice.

what is your ideal alternative career? My ideal alternative career would be something very linked to pop and rock (garage, R&B, pop and anything related with sixties music). In this regard, having my own radio programme and being a music writer/critic would probably be something close to such alternative career.

Name: Dania Duncan Location: DallasPractice Group: tax

what does DLa Piper mean to you? For me, DLA Piper means one united firm where we serve clients all over the world providing the same quality of services.

where’s your favorite place in the world?Cape Town, South Africa. An amazing port city located at the bottom of the earth, Cape Town’s coastal beaches and waterfront landscapes are breathtaking. The climate is perfect, providing excellent local wine. Home of the 2010 World Cup Football tournament and Nelson Mandela, it’s a must-see location for anyone who has never been to Africa.

what does DLa Piper mean to you?I knew DLA Piper was where I wanted to build my career during my very first interview because it had the work I wanted to do, the clients I wanted to serve and the best professionals to work with. I have an incredible team here at DLA Piper and it’s a privilege to work with each of them every day. DLA Piper is not just a job, it’s a family.

who inspires you? What most people don’t know about me is that I volunteered with Mother Teresa between university and law school. In my conversations with her, I was inspired to give of myself to others, be true and look to my heart for answers.

Name: steve weerts Location: Los angelesPractice Group: tax

what matters most to your clients? My clients want a well-rounded advisor who understands their businesses and responds quickly to their business needs anywhere in the world. Clients are interested in our full service global offering. Most importantly, they appreciate the business-focused approach of our practice groups worldwide.

what was the best day of your life? It’s a tie – my wedding day and the birth of our daughter. My family is the foundation for everything I do. They inspire me to be the best husband, dad and lawyer I can be.
