Renewable and Non renewable Resources

- Groups of 2 20 minutes. - Activity: Read about renewable and non renewable resources p.76-79 and

create a chart mentioning the natural resources use in Puerto Rico and will explain how they benefit their life. They will also classify them into renewable and renewable resources. At least 2 renewable and 2 non-renewable.

Natural ResourcesThey can be used as raw materials (basic material that is used to produce goods) .

Example: Wood makes furniture, cotton makes cloth and oil produce fuel.

Raw materials can be of mineral or organic origin

• MINERALS - can be metallic such as copper, iron or non metallic like quarts.• Minerals are consider non renewable resources.

• ORGANIC - fruit, vegetable, seeds or wood. • Consider renewable resources.

• Renewable – the amount of resources can stay the same or even increase.

• Non-renewable resources - Available only in a fix amount.

Non – renewable Resources

• Non- Renewable resources = means that if we used them all up. It will take nature thousands or even millions of years to produce them again if at all.

• Examples of Non-Renewable resources are: oil, fuel, minerals and natural gas.

• Example in Puerto Rico - minerals can be found in deposits (Accumulation of mineral manner in nature), Earth surface or Crust. In P.R mining of gold was practice when Spaniards arrives but it did not last long.

Non- renewable resources found in Puerto Rico• In Puerto Rico there are more non metallic minerals than metallic

minerals.

• Non metallic resources are very useful in construction. • Ex: cement is made with non- metallic elements such as sand, clay and gravel. This are

find in a quarry or a special type of mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=071lUxclTBw

• The salt mines of Cabo Rojo is another example of a non metallic mineral in Puerto Rico. This salt deposits gives us a mineral that we use in our daily diet. http://places.eyetour.com/whatToSee/cabo-rojo/82/cabo-rojo-salt-flats-interpretive-center-efren-perez-rivera

• Our island does not have coal deposits, natural gas or petroleum. We buy this materials from other countries. We call this fuel minerals because we use them in order to produce energy.

Our Renewable Resources• Renewable natural resources – resources that do not run out or

nature can produce them quickly. • Example of some renewable resources: wind, energy from the sun, soil,

animals, and plants.

• Benefits of renewable resources in P.R• The sun – gives us light, heat and solar energy.• Air - produces wind power• Soil – gives us fruit and vegetables• Animals – gives us meat and many more products
