The theme for Education Week this year is ‘NSW Public Schools Leading The Way’ with a special focus on the environment. It is a time to reflect on the position of public education and I am proud to say that education in NSW is going from strength to strength.
Murringo Public School has celebrated Education Week with a myriad of activities to keep the students active and to showcase their talents. On Monday our school participated in the Phillips Shield Athletics Carnival at Gus Smith Oval. All students participated to the best of their abilities and showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Congratulations to Jack Grant, who was crowned the Juvenile Boy Champion on the day. We are also proud to announce that Murringo won the Marching Trophy for 2009, under the guidance of Marty Hewson, who has spent many hours instructing the students in marching techniques.
Our Marimba/Choir group has performed four times this week – at the Wagga Marketplace, two performances in Young at the Cherry Jam concert and at our Education Week assembly. Congratulations to our talented performers – Claire Yates, Nick Galvin, Darcy DeBritt, Pam Wilson, Justin Taylor, Lochie Mclean and Oliver Mullen.
Students and pre-schoolers dressed as shearers and farmers on Wednesday to celebrate the National Simultaneous Storytime session. Schools and libraries all around Australia read the same book at the same time – “Pete the Sheep”, by Jackie French. The students read the story together and completed fun activities associated with the story.
Friday was our big celebration of public education. The students cooked a variety of goodies for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and enjoyed them with staff, parents and members of the community. The students then ran a very full and interesting assembly and the classrooms were opened for people to peruse the fabulous work students have completed and to see the great facilities that we have available for our students in Murringo.
Thank you to everybody who
has made our Education Week
such a great success.

He may be lacking in size, but he’s fast and has springs in those skinny little legs of his. Jack Grant, Year 2 at Murringo Public School managed to come first in the 7 yr Boys High Jump, second in the 7 yr Boys Long Jump, first in the 7 yr Boys Age Race and second in the Juvenile Boys Championship Race. This was enough to be awarded the Juvenile Boy Champion for 2009 at this year’s Phillips Shield which was held last Monday at Gus Smith Oval. Well Done Jack!
Murringo Public School students also have another reason to cheer, when they were awarded first place in the very traditional Marching Competition. Our students have been practicing with their instructor or drill sergeant, Marty Hewson. Marty taught them the meaning and the how to of parade ground orders - “ Marker”, “ Squad Full In”, “Dress”, “Attention”, “Stand At Ease”, “Eyes Right” and “Holt”, (just to name a few) which proved to be a winning formula. The students wish to thank Marty for his guidance, instruction, and time that he has given to them. The staff and parents also thank Marty for teaching their children to become such fine marchers for the parade.

The trustees of the Murringo Sportsground Trust has been successful in obtaining a grant from the NSW Sport and Recreation Department. The grant amount received was $4,923.00 to install a safe playground structure on the tennis court grounds. This amount approved could not exceed 50% of the NET project cost. Therefore the amount is on a “dollar for dollar” basis. Our job now is to provide the remaining 50% in voluntary labour, sponsorship and donations and that’s where you guys come in!. Once the site has been prepared and the structure delivered, the installation will then be made by a team of volunteers at a working bee on a date yet to be set. If you would like to make a donation or sponsor any part of this project, please call Bill Maloney (6384-6248) or Gina Galvin (6384-6284). Since the previous play equipment was deemed unsafe and taken down many years ago, there has been only a set of swings for the children to play on. So let’s get behind our young community members and support them by helping each other build a sound and safe play structure.

At the MCA Meeting in May, the latest Life Members of the Murringo Community Association were presented with their certificates and badges. Kae Neville also presented the plaque to the MCA for display in the Murringo Community Hall.
Pictured left is Kae Neville presenting the life members - Marty Hewson, Leonard Dowling, Tony Young and Mitzie (Gerardina Maria) Young with their certificates and plaque.
The grant submission for the refurbishment of the Community Hall and Supper Room, including the kitchen, has been completed and submitted to the Office of Rural Affairs. The amount requested of $42,000.00 would be a blessing to provide much needed work to our wonderful halls.
As we always live in hope, if we are unsuccessful, the Young Shire Council along with the MCA will go ahead with the refurbishment to the value of approximately $20,000.

You may have heard about Mr Rudd’s “Building the Education Revolution (BER). This federally funded program is aimed at creating jobs immediately. It is divided into two sections - National School Pride (for refurbishment and maintenance of school buildings and grounds) and Schools for the 21st Century (new building in schools). Our school has been chosen to receive funding in the first round of National School Pride. Our $50,000 will be spent on refurbishing our school this year. Jobs that will be completed include - exterior painting of every building, repair and paint picket fence, air conditioning of the admin block, painting and re-carpeting of upper division building, repairs to library windows, painting of interior and exterior of toilet block, and more. We have chosen a library as our new building in the 21st Century Program. Below is a copy of the plan for the building that we will receive. We do not know when the building will commence, but our plans are for this building to incorporate a community library/local history room and toy library.

Thanks to All!

Astronomy in Murringo
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy and in Murringo we are fortunate to see the Starry Night Sky in all it’s glory, (that is if there are no clouds). Most of us can recognise the “Big Saucepan”. It is known also as the Constellation of Orion (the Hunter). The 3 stars in a line make Orion’s belt, when you look towards the West in the evening. The planet Saturn is at present towards the North. In the early morning, before sunrise, look for the planet Venus in the northeast, Mars is a small “star” behind it. Jupiter is another huge “star” up high in the sky. Venus is huge and bright. Check out www.sydneyobservatory.com.au for lots of info. Happy Skywatching! From Tiiu.
