Our Mission 1
Our vision is to invest in the next generation of powerful female change-makers.
Unleashed is a social justice/leadership program
empowering middle school girls to take a stand
against an injustice they care deeply about, advocating
for animal rights and welfare. Over the course
of twelve weeks, girls develop critical tools that
enable them to solve complex social issues over the
course of their lives.
Our 2012-2013 fiscal year was transformational for Unleashed as we embarked on a few monumental journeys and trans-formed the lives of the middle school girls we were able to reach.
Our goal this past year was to increase sustainability and strengthen our capacity! After three years of being a grass-roots organization, we wanted to standardize our best practices, codify our program, crystallize outcomes and lay the foundation for future expansion.
Our strategic priorities were:
Building capacity by expanding our pool of talent.
Securing an Unleashed community space.
Increasing partnerships and alliances with other organizations
Articulating our value, brand and identity
With pleasure, I confidently report our goals and objectives were met successfully.
We were able to design and implement a training program for Unleashed coaches, expanding our ability to deliver the program to other sites in 2014. Unleashed created the Unleashed Coaching Manual to support coaches and coaches-in-training throughout the delivery.
We hired Board Assist to manage the recruitment and training of potential board members, and we increased the number of committees within the organization, conse-quently expanding our volunteer base.
In August, we secured an office space that enabled us to hire a part time Operations Manager, provide a work area for interns, host friendraisers, hold committee and board meetings and offer fee-for-service programming in the community.
Unleashed is a highly collaborative organization that developed partnerships with the schools and commu-nity centers that offer the program; the experts that serve on the panels offered to our girls or offer council in areas of development; the shelter and rescue organizations we work with in rural, high kill areas of the country; and local businesses that resonate with our values and mission. This year we have increased the number of partnerships in or-der to achieve our vision: Investing in our next generation of powerful female change-makers by empowering girls to take a stand against an injustice they feel passionately about and advocate for animal rights and welfare.
Our dynamic, committed Board of Directors and commit-tee chairs enabled us to assess and re-evaluate our current
communication strategies, materials and the processes by which we reach out to the public, helping us effectively articulate who we are, the programs and services we pro-vide, and the outcomes we produce.
I would like to personally thank all of those who have in-vested in Unleashed, either financially or generously do-nating time, so that we can continue transforming the lives of middle schools girls and provide them with the critical tools and opportunities that will shape the rest of their lives.
All my best,
Founder and CEO

Scope & Objectives Collaboration
Creating common ground among diverse groups of girls, recogniz-ing it is critical to respect others’ opinions, differences and values and be able to resolve conflicts in order to accomplish goals.
Social Activism
A deep understanding of the Unleashed social change model:
Diagnosing a social problem, identifying root causes and the consequences if these issues con-tinue to persist
Addressing the immediate problem, simultaneously working toward creating sustainable change
Increasing awareness and design-ing educational campaigns
Engaging others in their mission
Animal Rights and Welfare
Unleashed reframes animal inhu-manity as a social problem mask-ing larger issues in our country. Our goal is to empower girls as experts, inspiring them to create change. The Unleashed rescue or-ganization provides participants with the ability to learn expe-rientially about the salient issues animals are confronting.
Leadership Development
Girls develop their capacity to identify and leverage strengths, communicate effectively, advocateand defy the status quo, and im-plement change that creates im-pact. Girls’ leadership capacities increase as they apply their newly formed skills to a cause they believe in, gradually becoming aware that if they can change the world for animals, they are capable of tack-ling any challenge they encounter throughout their lives.
Female Identity Development
Unleashed leverages a critical time in development to provide opportunities for girls to take risks, build resiliency, explore and experiment with self identity, challenge gender stereotypes and manage pressure to conform to gender roles that limit their advancement.

Unleashed Model of PowerPersonal Poweris strengthened as a result of custom designed leadershipexercises that facilitate dis-covering strengths, identi-fying core values, self mas-tery and awareness which builds resiliency, increases confidence and emotional intelligence, and fosters psychological growth and development.
Relational Power develops by using the team as a microcosm of a girl’s world, building a strong, vibrant community. A “sis-terhood,” among partici-pants enables our Unleashed groups to see first hand the impact they have on others.Communication style, col-laboration, negotiation, pro-viding and receiving feedback, conflict resolution andempathy all are factors of relational power, and social and emotional learning is embedded throughout the curriculum as a means of strengthening this type of power.
AssertivePoweris increased by the social justice aspect of Unleashed. It encompasses the ability to take action and stand for a cause; create innovative solutions; manage resistanceand pushback; take risks; advocate; execute a project; educate others; and become civically engaged citizens who are passionate about creating a difference in their community. Unleashed is an integration of social justice, leadership development, an-imal rights and welfare, and female identity develop-ment. The transformational results of the program are due to a systemic approach, a combination of multiple factors, purposely designed as an equation leading to powerful outcomes.

Unleashed also operates a puppy rescue organization, saving dogs from urgent lists nationwide. The purpose for the rescue organzation in relation to the program is two fold:
The Unleashed social change philosophy proposes that activism necessitates having exposure and experience with the population or issues being advocated or changed
Participation in the animal rescue components of the program serves to increase engagement and ignite passion.
Activities girls are involved in include (but are not limited to): receiving updates on the status of puppies rescued and adopted; brainstorming names for each puppy so they can be listed on www.petfinder.com; reviewing applications and conducting mock interviews; providing Unleashed coaches with questions the rescue volunteer can use in their adop-tion/foster interviews; recruitment of foster/adoptive homes; fundraising to support the needs of the rescue; tempera-ment testing and intake of each litter of puppies rescued.
New Partners include 4 shelter partners and 7 rescues: Gail ’s Playground Pups, Kiki’s Dog Spa, Biscuits and Bath, Dog Days NY, Infinity Hope, Shiba Inu, Stray from the Heart
Shelter Partners in: Nash County, NC; Dillon County, SCLogan County, WV; Cherokee County, SC; Chesterfield County, SC; El Faro, Puerto Rico
Unleashed to the RescueWe started the process looking for a rescue
without really knowing what to expect.
However, the Unleashed Program made it
a comfortable and enjoyable experience by
finding the right pup for our family…
Thank you so much Unleashed!

ImpactThe impact our program has on participants extends beyond the quantitative evaluation conducted. Program evaluation includes measurements of self-esteem, self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, overall life satisfaction, conformity, content knowledge, and power and commu-nication. However, qualitatively, testimonials from parents and teachers demonstrate noted differences in communi-cation, passion that extends to other areas of life (home, school and the community), the ability to initiate and achieve goals, improved behavior in the classroom (attention, participation) and adopting other leadership roles. The skills developed by the program are highly correlated with National School Counselors Association’s competencies, measuring fundamental factors contributing to achievement in school and in life.
My daughter has benefited in so many ways from hertime spent with Unleashed. She has developed a quiet leadership style, her con-fidence and empathy have grown, and she has made new friends…We are very grateful to Unleashed and wish every Middle School were as smart as Nightin-gale in affording this oppor-tunity for our daughters.
– Parent (Nightingale)
Unleashed is a program where a girl can walk into the room and learn to use her power…to change society and help dogs and change the world and make it a better place.
