November 24th, 2019 ~ Our Lord Jesus Christ ~ King of the Universe

FROM FR. MARCIN MY DEAR PARISHIONERS,

Today we celebrate the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe. Our celebration of Jesus Christ as King today means that we place Jesus first in our lives at all times. On this last Sunday of this liturgical year before Advent begins next Sunday we celebrate publicly that Jesus is first in our lives.

In the Gospel today we see Jesus sitting on the most

unusual throne of the cross. “King of the Jews” was written over it. But that moment of pain and humiliation was passing, and then Jesus assumed his real throne at the right hand side of his Father. This can teach us something; to bring about the kingdom of God we may have to abandon what the world considers important and even be prepared to be ridiculed as Jesus was on the cross. It was not easy for Jesus to begin establishing his kingdom with values at odds to those of the world; it cost him his life. It is not easy for the Church now trying to establish the kingdom of Jesus in a society growing daily more secular and pagan. But for those who die to themselves, who truly open themselves to Jesus, the reward is a share in Jesus’ kingdom, “Indeed I promise you, today, you will be with me in paradise.”

This feast is an invitation to all those who have power or authority of any kind to compare their use of power or authority with Jesus. Are they using their power to serve others or to manipulate? Are they using their power for the building up of a more just society or to feather their own nest? Are they using their power in any way that might cause pain to others or in a way that could help to alleviate pain? In the prayer Jesus taught us, we pray, “thy kingdom come.” Jesus has shown how to bring about that kingdom. Let us pray that nations and individuals will be humble enough to look at how Jesus used power and bring about the kingdom of God.

Our celebration today is a joyful celebration because Jesus is not like kings of earthly kingdoms who may be remote from their people. Jesus is close to us, he walks by our side, he lifts us up when we need help, and he gave his life for us. Our celebration of Jesus Christ as King today means that we place Jesus first in our lives at all times. We put Jesus first in our lives and make him King of our lives, first in our minds and then in our actions. We make Jesus King of our minds by blocking out voices that are contrary to Jesus and filling our minds with what would please Jesus. When we make Jesus King of our minds it is much easier to make Jesus King of our actions. We make Jesus King of our actions when we have decisions to make and we choose the option that would most please Jesus.

Let us ask ourselves if Jesus reigns in our minds, reigns in our wills and desires, reigns in our hearts, and reigns in our bodies. Is Jesus the first and the last, the Alpha and Omega, over everything in our lives? If Jesus is not our King, let us once again today place Jesus first in our lives and ask his forgiveness.

THANKSGIVING – November 28th

On Thanksgiving Day, we are encouraged to pause and give thanks to God. When we give thanks, we bring to mind God’s gifts to us. On this Thanksgiving Day, we thank our Heavenly Father, and we pray fervently, “God Bless America!” It is a beautiful holiday. Jesus shows us the importance giving thanks. By expressing gratitude, we overcome sadness, we cement relationships with each other and with God. By coming to Mass on Thanksgiving Day, we are thanking God in the best possible way. THANKSGIVING MASSES – November 28TH: St. Mark’s at 8:45 a.m. and OLM 9:30 a.m.

ADVENT IS COMING Next Sunday we begin the New Liturgical Year and the First Sunday of Advent. The Sunday lectionary will move to cycle A. As we begin Advent let us start with a renewed spirit. Consider coming to confession during Advent as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal “For I Was Hungry…”

This time of year, as we come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, please consider making a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal as a way to give thanks for our many blessings. Each year, tens of thousands of people in profound need seek out the services of our Catholic Charities and, with the help for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, they find an open door and a compassionate response. Please make a pledge to our Annual Appeal today! For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2019appeal.org. Wish you a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving! Wishing you the gift of faith and the blessing of hope this thanksgiving day! We gather on this day to be thankful for what we have, for the family we love, the friends we cherish, and for the blessings that will come. Happy Thanksgiving! From Fr. Javier TEACHING FROM THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH - THE SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH The Sacrament of Holy Orders My dear brothers and sisters, the ministerial priesthood has the task not only of representing Christ - Head of the Church - before the assembly of the faithful, but also of acting in the name of the whole Church when presenting to God the prayer of the Church, and above all when offering the Eucharistic sacrifice.

Page 4: Our Mission Statement “Recognizing that we are the Body of ... · 11/24/2019  · 10:45AM Dennis McKenna 12:15PM Special Intention (Living) Sanctuary Lamp in memory of Dn. Pat VanOrman

"In the name of the whole Church" does not mean that priests are the delegates of the community. The prayer and offering of the Church are inseparable from the prayer and offering of Christ, her head; it is always the case that Christ worships in and through his Church. The whole Church, the Body of Christ, prays and offers herself "through him, with him, in him," in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to God the Father, therefore those who in the Body are especially his ministers are called ministers not only of Christ, but also of the Church. It is because the ministerial priesthood represents Christ that it can represent the Church. Also, "The divinely instituted ecclesiastical ministry is exercised in different degrees by those who even from ancient times have been called bishops, priests, and deacons." Catholic doctrine, expressed in the liturgy, the Magisterium, and the constant practice of the Church, recognizes that there are two degrees of ministerial participation in the priesthood of Christ: the episcopacy and the presbyterate . The diaconate is intended to help and serve them. For this reason the term sacerdos in current usage denotes bishops and priests but not deacons. Yet Catholic doctrine teaches that the degrees of priestly participation (episcopate and presbyterate) and the degree of service (diaconate) are all three conferred by a sacramental act called "ordination," that is, by the sacrament of Holy Orders. God bless you. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC We are Catholic because we believe: When the hour had come for him to fulfill the Father's plan of love, Jesus allows a glimpse of the boundless depth of his filial prayer, not only before he freely delivered himself up ("Abba . . . not my will, but yours."), but even in his last words on the Cross, where prayer and the gift of self are but one: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do", "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise", "Woman, behold your son" - "Behold your mother", "I thirst."; "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? It is finished"; "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" until the "loud cry" as he expires, giving up his spirit. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 2605
