Ask the Pastor

Why does Fr. Paul not permit eulogies at a funeral, other priests do?

Fr. Paul does permit eulogies at funerals. A complete funeral is comprised of three main parts: Vigil, Mass, and Commit-tal. Eulogies can be given during the vigil for the deceased, or at the committal, the Church does not permit them at the Mass. The Order of Christian Funerals approved by the Vatican and published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, in reference to the funeral mass clearly states, “there is never to be a eulogy.” In addition this directive is further reinforced by the Liturgical Guidelines published by Bishop Bransfield for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

The celebrant may express a few words of gratitude about the person’s life in his homily, or he may allow one relative or friend to provide a reflection of the deceased during the concluding rite. While this may first appear to be contradictory, it actually is not, and it hints at what a funeral Mass is supposed to signify. "It is a tribute to the merciful love of Christ and to the victory over death won by Jesus, together with a prayerful plea that the merits of that victory be extended now to the person being prayed for. The purpose of the Mass is not to celebrate the life of the deceased but to offer worship to God for Christ’s victory over death, to comfort the mourners with prayers, and to pray for the soul of the deceased."

Furthermore, the Diocesan Guidelines for Wheeling-Charleston state: "Given the emotion of the moment and to ensure the words are in harmony with the celebration, any comments made should be put down in writing and reviewed by the presider. The speaker should limit his/her remarks to three to four minutes." This is about one page double space typed. These family comments should not consist of a biography (the place for that is the obituary) or an endless chain of humorous stories about the decedent (those are more appropriate at the wake (vigil) service the night before or at a luncheon following the funeral).
