Who are we?

• Weareoneof 10nationallaboratoriesunderthestewardshipof the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.

• Ourstate-of-the-artinstrumentationandfacilitiesareusedby more than 3,000 researchers from government, academia and industry each year to advance scientific discoveries.

• Wewerefoundedin1962,andinour50-yearhistory,wehave enabled numerous scientific advances in areas ranging from energy and material sciences to particle physics and drug discoveryandeventheWorldWideWeb.Researchconductedat SLAC has resulted in six Nobel Prizes to date.

• WeareoperatedbyStanfordUniversity, oneof theworld’sgreat institutions for research and higher education.

Our VisionSLAC is a leader in exploring frontier questions of science. Our facilities are used to solve scientific mysteries – from the workings of subatomic particles to the structure and function of matter to the nature of the cosmos – with the potential to improve life for all of us.

Our MissionSLAC is a multi-program laboratory exploring frontier questions in accelerator research, particle physics and astrophysics, and the structure and function of matter.

Our mission is to:

• Growintoapremierphotonsciencelaboratory.

For SLAC, being a premier photon science laboratory means twothings:OurX-rayresearchfacilitiesmustbeamongthebest intheworld, atrusteddestinationforscientistsfromallover theglobe.Andwemustconstantlyexpandourin-house researchcapabilities,soSLAC’sownworld-classscientists can make groundbreaking discoveries here.

• Maintainourpositionasthepremieracceleratorlaboratory.

Throughoutourhistory,SLAC’stwo-milelinearacceleratorhas produced high-energy electrons for revolutionary physics experiments. Our capabilities in accelerator technologies are foundationaltothelaboratory’sexistence.Whetherfine-tuning existing technologies to improve experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), or spearheading research and developmentintothenextgenerationof facilities,SLAC’sgoalis to continue to provide the best accelerator technologies to the nationandtheworld.

• Pursuestrategicprogramsinparticlephysics,particle astrophysics and cosmology.

SLAC has a rich history in particle physics, one that has yielded greatdiscoveriesoverthelastfivedecades.Ourworkinthis areacontinues, withprogramsaimedatbetterunderstandingthe fundamental building blocks of matter and the great mysteries of the universe.

Our Future 1110 Our Future

Our FutureSLAC is poised to welcome a frontier of discovery unlike any other in our 50-year history.

Our areas of exploration include:

• Designingnewmaterialsforalternativeenergy.

Scientists at SLAC are focusing on the atomic-scale design of materials for energy production and storage. Examples of SLAC research critical to future energy technologies are the use of catalysts to create cleaner fuels and to develop sustainable processes for the production of chemicals and materials, and making materials for better, more efficient batteries for energy storage.

• Developingsmallerandmorepowerfulaccelerators.

SLAC is at the forefront of experiments aimed at improving the powerandefficiencyof particleacceleratorsusedinbasic research, medicine, industry and other areas important to society.Byinducingelectronsto“surf ”onwavesof plasma, researchers have accelerated these particles to 1,000 times greater energies over a given distance than ever before.

• Pursuingdarkmatteranddarkenergy.
