Our Mission: To promote understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science education.

Our Vision: That all children will learn about and be inspired by the natural world so that they become responsible stewards of the Earth.

For the past 38 years the Environmental Volunteershas dedicated its efforts to educating children about the natural world. What keeps us focused is our vision: That all children will learn about and be inspired by the natural world so that they becomeresponsible stewards of the Earth.

Since 1972 we have brought that vision to over300,000 Bay Area children. In the last school yearalone, the EV educated more than 13,000 K-8thgrade children at 47 different elementary and middle schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Why? Because we want them to care for and respect the Earth they will soon inherit. And whileenvironmental awareness is growing, there is mucheducational work still to be done.

The theme of this annual report is “Impact,” and weinvite you to learn more about our current activities. The following pages illustrate our impact on chil-dren, teachers, volunteers and the community, andhow our efforts are making a positive difference.

We want to say “thank you” to our extra-ordinary volunteers, donors, and staff who contribute to accomplishing the EV’s mission. Our impacts and successes as an organization are a direct result of the invaluable support you provide. We thank you for being our partners in educating current and future stewards of the environment.

All About Birds:“Thank you for the great experience…students loved the bird presentation… and as many are limited English speakers this is great for their language development. The hands on experience will make a lasting effect on them. Your volunteers were wonderful and I look forward to having you back next year.”—Ms. Susan Brophy/ Grade 1 McCollam School

Early California Indian Life:“Thank you so much for the wonderful morning you gave our fourth grade students. They loved the hands on activities and are still talking aboutthem. Your generosity of spirit, time and knowledge is admirable and definitelyhelped drive home some important lessons to be learned from the Native Califor-nians about taking care of our earth and ourselves. I know I for one will not look atrope, acorns, hides and deceptively simple games in the same way.”—Ms. Ruth Cady/ Grade 4 St. Joseph’s School

Baylands and Marine Ecology:“Thank you so much for kindly volunteering your time to our classroom. The experience you give them is invaluable. Many of them have never seen a view of the bay or the ocean! Getting them out and having them learn first hand is a priceless gift. I am honored to have worked with you again this year and I hope to continue the relationship in years to come.”—Ms. Angela Brandt / Grades 3 and 4 George Mayne Elementary

EV Impact on CommunityAt The EV, we meet our mission in a variety of ways.Though most of our work is with kids, we find ways tobring our message and mission to adults, too. Last yearwe developed several new programs that cast a widernet and allow us to reach new audiences in new ways.

Corporate Volunteer Days: The EV facilitates fun volunteer work parties for corporate groups. Some of the groups we assisted included Motorola, PriceWaterhouseCooper, and KBAY radio station. Corporate work groups join us at the Palo Alto Baylands where they get a crashcourse in native and non-native plant ecology (why in-vasive non-natives are a problem and the benefits ofnative plants). Then they spend a few hours pulling outinvasive plants. After they’ve worked up a sweat andgenerated ‘charitable endorphins’ (feeling good aboutdoing good), we treat them to a baylands nature walkled by one of our wonderful volunteer docents. Knowof a company who might be interested? Let them knowabout us. We’d love to help them help the baylands.

Bringing The Village Together to Raise A Child’s Science Education:The EV is at the forefront of a wonderful project. Working with the Mountain View-Whisman SchoolDistrict, we are helping to develop a large-scale collaboration that is bringing together multiple environmental education non-profits and increasingscience education hours in Mountain View schools. The program is serving every 4th and 5th grade classroom at every school in the district. Our goal is to increase science education hours for students by leveraging the collective services of many science

education non-profit organizations. Collectively wecan deliver more hours of instruction without any oneorganization needing to increase its resources and capacity. By working with the school district leader-ship, we are able to impact a whole community in a resource efficient manner.

Passport To AdventureGoing Beyond the Classroom: We are trying to impact the families of the students who participate in our programs. Two projects allow us to do just that. The first is a simple list of follow-up questions thatteachers send home to parents following our pro-gram. The questions are meant to inspire conversa-tion around the dinner table about the subject theirstudent studied with us. With a link to our website, parents and students can find out the answers if they are stumped.

The second program iscalled “Passport To Adventure.” Staged on a weekend in a local park, families visit a series oflearning stations wherethey participate in educational activities. At each station their ‘adventure passport’ isstamped and the goal is to fill up the passport. Of course, the real goal is for parents and children to learn environmental science together.

Thanks to our VolunteersThanks to these volunteers who have dedicated their time and passion to the Environmental Volunteers in a variety of ways throughout the year. You are the heart and soul of theEV!

6

Since 1972 The Environmental Volunteers has been teaching natural science to children in our community using a hands on, small group educational philosophy. Our programs nurture a connection to the environment and spark a long interest in the joy of discovery while at the same timeproviding science education to under-resourced schools to assist them in their efforts to meet state mandated standards. In 2010 our educational programs reachedover 13,000 students through more than400 Classsroom programs and 100 FieldTrips.

Water Science“I really found it interesting that water has a very thin but flexible skin…You know, I don’t think I knew one thing you taught me before I sat down on a chair in your group. After writing this I hope I’ve convinced you to do this again next year.” —Daughty / Grade 5

Earthquake Geology:“Your rock game was so fun and educational. Before this I never knew there was such a thing as a rockcycle……Without you, how would I know? This is what happens when there is a hybrid between fun and learn-ing!”—Derek / Grade 4

Water Conservation:“I am thankful that you took the time to teach us about our planet’s water. I really enjoyed the hands on experiments…..my favorite was the magnet molecules. I could have played with those for a while. It’s very hard for me to leave a cool looking contraption just sitting there. You let us touch everything! You answered when we asked you a question and the stuff you showed us was interesting. So basically I’m saying that you rule!

—Simon / Grade 5

Marine Ecology:“My favorite part was the squid dissection. I learned not only why, but how marine life does what it needs to do and this was a pleasant change from reading out of a textbook. All in all it was a nice, messy and fun way to learn.”
