There is a well-worn phrase, ‘Not all who wander are lost.’ It comes from a poem by J.R.R. Tolkien, the author who wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy among many other works. The first stanza goes like this:
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
When the phrase is used, I think folks are saying that those who strike out on different paths (those paths less traveled by) aren’t necessarily wrong in doing so. Creativity, even a bit of rebellion against the status quo, is seen by many as a good thing. Often, traditions are resisted simply because they are traditions.
So it begs the question, ‘When does wandering turn into being lost?’ ‘What does it mean to be lost?’
There is a tension in scripture between ‘Freedom in Christ’ and ‘walking the straight and narrow’. Within the Christian faith, there is a solid foundation of truth, moral absolutes, and non-negotiable terms of salvation. Jesus made it quite clear in the very exclusive statement found in John 14:6, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.’ Peter said in Acts 4:12, ‘And there is salvation is no one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ That leaves no wiggle room for opinion or any ‘All faiths lead to God’ kind of nonsense.
However, there is much freedom in living out such a grounded faith. All over the world, Christians have differences in worship style, architecture, customs, and language. The problem comes when freedom turns into too much wandering, and wandering leads us too far away from Home. The problems come when freedom becomes license to sin, and wandering is seen as politically correct and our society’s version of ‘tolerance’. Not all who wander are lost, but those who make a habit of wandering to the point of falling off the foundation set themselves up for disaster - they shipwreck their faith.

Summer Sermon Series
Lost and Found Not many people like to admit when they’re lost.
But Jesus said there would be many who would be, and He said He came ‘to seek and save those who are
lost.’ This summer’s sermons will help encourage and equip people of faith to lead those who are lost to a
saving faith in Christ.
