Founded in 1876 by Gideon Frost for “the children of Friends and those similarly

sentimented,” Friends Academy is a Quaker, coeducational, independent, college

preparatory day school serving 780 students from age three through the twelfth grade.

The school’s philosophy is based on the Quaker principles of integrity, simplicity, patience,

moderation, peaceful resolution of conflict, and a belief that the silence and simple ministry

of the “gathered meeting” brings the presence of God into the midst of busy lives.

Friends Academy is committed to developing a diverse community whose members value

excellence in learning and growth in knowledge and skill, a genuine commitment to service

and ethical action, and a realization that every life is to be explored, celebrated,

and enjoyed in the spirit of the Religious Society of Friends.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of all in the extended Friends Academy family, it is with great anticipation and excitement that

Tim and I welcome you to the 26th Annual Friends Academy Dinner and Auction. For the first time in many

years, this event is on a Friday night! That means it is NOT a school night and THAT means we all get to

stay out late – and THAT means more fun! In fact, it won’t be over when it’s over because this year the fun

continues at the after party. The last time I attended an “after party” was 198–? But, who’s counting...

It’s never too late!! Needless to say, Tim and I are well rested and so look forward to this momentous

celebration and spending the night with all of you.

For the third year in a row, the beautiful Garden City Hotel, a favorite destination for many, serves as our

host. Once again, our venue has been transformed by our outstanding volunteers into a magical setting.

We are all in for a fantastic evening!

We are indeed indebted to the incredible people that make our Auction one of the most anticipated events

of the year. It is impossible to mention each volunteer by name here, but we honor all of you – our

sponsors, underwriters, Silent/Live Auction item donors, event volunteers, attendees, and bidders. We

thank in particular this year’s co-chairs: Michele Cagner (who is serving as co-chair for the second year in

a row), Janet DellaFera, and Roseann Martin. Their efforts have been extraordinary and their leadership

invaluable. Please offer your own gratitude to our chairs and to all of our “behind-the-scenes heroes,” who

are so instrumental in our success.

Thank you for another incredible year and for all there is to celebrate tonight. Like you, Tim and I

now count the Friends Academy Dinner and Auction as an annual favorite. So, bring your energy, your

generosity, and your best dance moves tonight and enjoy Friday Night with Friends!

Warmest regards,

Andrea Kelly

Head of School

March 16, 2018

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 26th annual FA Dinner and Auction, Friday Night with Friends. As we gather here on a

Friday night, we hope that you will allow yourself to relax, have fun, and enjoy the festivities the night has

to offer - including our first ever afterparty!

To say this experience has been gratifying is an understatement. Collectively, we agree that this experience

has brought nothing but joy. We also agree that this night wouldn’t be possible without the dedication

and tireless effort from the individuals in the Development Office. Without Diane Biolsi, Joan Bruen,

Marilyn DelRosso, and Jim Michalek, this night would not be possible, and for that we offer our sincerest

thanks. Additionally, we would be remiss if we didn’t take time to extend a very special thank you to Ling

and Jerry Wang, the dinner sponsor of the night. This very generous donation helps ensure success of our

auction and ultimately our children. Lastly, everything special about Friends Academy wouldn’t exist if

it weren’t for you...our current families, alumni, teachers, staff and students. Thank you to all for your

contributions to help make this night, and each school year, a success.

As a school community (and there is no time more important to be a part of a community than right now),

we lean on each other and give each other continual support and encouragement to do what’s best for our

children during the most important years of their lives. This year, we thoughtfully considered a meaningful

way to incorporate the students from all three divisions into tonight’s event. Be sure to explore the

space with your eyes and ears to find smatterings of each of your children. This most meaningful part of

the night is due to the leadership of MaryJo Allegra (LS Art Department), Clare Nesfield (MS Technology

Department), James Liverani and Joe Romano (Music Department). We thank these individuals and all who

helped them to make this evening truly shine a spotlight on our students.

As with each annual Dinner and Auction, our main purpose tonight is to stop and appreciate our

community, its values and mission, and the invaluable experience our children are blessed to be a part of.

Please consider supporting our school tonight at this event and other opportunities throughout the year.

Warmly,

Michele Cagner, Janet DellaFera, Roseann Martin

AUCTIONEER JED MOREY ‘ 90Husband, Father, Writer is how Jed Morey describes himself on his LinkedIn profile. Jed is the husband of Eden White and Father of Ava (9th grade) and Maya (6th grade). He is devoted to his family. He is passionate about politics. His business is digital marketing.

When he is not volunteering for his alma mater, he is busy leading Morey Creative Studios, a growth-driven marketing agency focusing on inbound marketing, sales enablement and customer retention. His passion project is being the executive producer of News Beat, a political and cultural podcast that blends journalism and music. He is the former Publisher of the Long Island Press and author of The Great American Disconnect: Seven Fundamental Threats to our Democracy. In his spare time, he roots for the Mets and Jets.

A special thanks to Joe Romano, James Liverani and the Upper School Jazz Band for an incredible performance tonight!

Over the last few months, Lower and Middle School students have worked passionately on art projects to support the Auction. These projects will be gifted back to the school for all to enjoy, and it is our hope that our collaborative donations to them will send a message of unity and hope and underscore the essence of our community. We ask that you show your dedication to these students and their commitment to collaboration with a $1 dollar donation.

Batik Silk Scarves Created and Signed by Every Lower School Student.A batik is an art form best-known in Indonesia in which hot wax is used to draw designs onto fabric. The fabric is then dyed and the wax is removed, revealing a design made up of the original colored fabric. Lower school artists in kindergarten through grade 5 used a water-based wax resist to draw images and text onto silk scarves. Students were asked “What does it mean to be a part of a community?” and brainstormed visuals that clearly expressed their thoughts. They worked collaboratively to draw their ideas onto the scarves and bring them to life with vibrant silk dyes. These wonderful works of art will be on display permanently in the Lower School.

The Meeting House Through The Eyes Of Middle School StudentsFriends Academy’s Quaker spirit is brought to life with this lovely, original watercolor of the Matinecock Meeting House by Middle School artist Yihan Ding, and signed by our entire Middle School student body. The windows of the Meeting House are lit up from behind to symbolize “The Light From Within” as a wonderful reminder of the beauty and simplicity of our community values.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Annual Fund Committee for the hard work they do on behalf of Friends Academy. Soliciting donations and raising money from your peers is not an easy task, but this group does it with integrity and class and their results are impressive. In the 2016-2017 school year, this group secured financial gifts totaling $1,880,439 with 83% of our parents participating. These funds are critically important to Friends Academy and directly benefit every member of our community. Please consider a gift to the 2017-2018 Annual Fund. Our goal is always 100% parent participation. Best wishes to all for a successful end to the school year and enjoy the evening!
