While political discourse has always had its dark side, it seems to have grown worse in recent years. And the unfortunate fallout has been an increase in hostility among people outside Washington DC. You know what I mean. And we Christians can easily get caught up in the verbal free-for-all without thinking much about it. After all, every bodys doing it! Why is that happening? Well, there are lots of reasons, but I think the problem has its roots in a spiritual reality: Were fallen people living in a fallen world. And we Christians are constantly ex- posed to the ideas and examples of our fallen world. Following along is a pretty natural response. But as Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: (2 Cor 5:17) - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Were no longer trapped by the ways of the world ... were changed people; we can choose to be different. But were also reminded that God doesnt choose for us. (Rom 12:1 ) - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. We have to participate in the pro- cess of change. Again, we have to choose how well act. KSITSADS DSARD But theres more. In JesusSermon on the Mount, we learn what we Christians are to be like: Jesus said: Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. (Matt 5:3) To mournmeans to feel sorry” ... in this case, sorry for our sin and rebellion against God. And our sorrow for our own sin should lead us to grant mercy to those still trapped in the ways of our fallen world. (Matt 5:7) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. We must be ready to overlook the hateful and accusing language of others. Why? First, because weve been there ourselves, we understand the fallen heart behind the language. But second, because nothing anyone can do will separate us from Gods love (Rom 8:38-39). So we can offer mercy, rather than retribution. And finally, we need to remember that while were to stand up for righteousness, sometimes evil wins some battles. But Ecc 12:13-14 gives us hope: The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. Church, in the end, righteousness always wins. Lets not be drawn back into the very traps Jesus died to free us from. As Matt 5:16 teaches: "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Which leads me to a final reminder. In my January sermon series, Whos Your One?, I asked you to begin to pray for one person you know doesnt know Jesus. While the world needs to see us living in a Godly way, it takes someone to actually share the Gospel message for the Holy Spirit to change a heart. Sunday, February 16 th were starting our Three Circles Evangelism Training Course . The 3 Circles is a simple and conversational tool to help you share the Gospel. The class meets from 4:00 to 5:00 pm in room 222. The cost is $5 per person. Sign up list is posted outside the church office. My prayer is that FBC will be a church where people not only see Jesus in how we speak and live, but also as a place where people come to embrace Jesus as we share the good news of the Gospel. Together in Him, Jim Isaiah 49:6b - I will also make You a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth." NASU

I suspect we’ve all grown weary of the harsh and hostile language used by some of our political rep-resentatives. While political discourse has always had it’s dark side, it seems to have grown worse in recent years. And the unfortunate fallout has been an increase in hostility among people outside Washington DC. You know what I mean. And we Christians can easily get caught up in the verbal free-for-all without thinking much about it. After all, every body’s doing it!

Why is that happening? Well, there are lots of reasons, but I think the problem has it’s roots in a spiritual reality: We’re fallen people living in a fallen world. And we Christians are constantly ex-posed to the ideas and examples of our fallen world. Following along is a pretty natural response. But as Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: (2 Cor 5:17) - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. We’re no longer trapped by the ways of the world ... we’re changed people; we can choose to be different.

But we’re also reminded that God doesn’t choose for us. (Rom 12:1 ) - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. We have to participate in the pro-cess of change. Again, we have to choose how we’ll act. KSITSADS DSARD

But there’s more. In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we learn what we Christians are to be like: Jesus said: Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. (Matt 5:3) To “mourn” means to “feel sorry” ... in this case, sorry for our sin and rebellion against God. And our sorrow for our own sin should lead us to grant mercy to those still trapped in the ways of our fallen world. (Matt 5:7) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” We must be ready to overlook the hateful and accusing language of others. Why? First, because we’ve been there ourselves, we understand the fallen heart behind the language. But second, because nothing anyone can do will separate us from God’s love (Rom 8:38-39). So we can offer mercy, rather than retribution.

And finally, we need to remember that while we’re to stand up for righteousness, sometimes evil wins some battles. But Ecc 12:13-14 gives us hope: The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.

Church, in the end, righteousness always wins. Let’s not be drawn back into the very traps Jesus died to free us from. As Matt 5:16 teaches: "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Which leads me to a final reminder. In my January sermon series, Who’s Your One?, I asked you to begin to pray for one person you know doesn’t know Jesus.
