Objectives

We must simplify:

To be scalable — to open and acquire new campuses.

To streamline and move faster.

To save time, money, and effort of executives (us).

To be a relational company (versus a database).

To have economies of scale — of buying power — of advertising — of catalogs, etc.To have one, integrated information system (e.g., e-mail).

We need to become a coherent single company.

Assignment

Task: Reduce a complexity to a simplicity which will improve productivity and make our work better – something we all can benefit from. Identify some things that are complex and select the assignment. Then present:

1. What is to be simplified.

2. How it will be simplified.

3. The likely results or saving.

4. Offer the solution in a turn-key format.

So What’s the Big Deal?

Consider a rope…

• Simple

• Strong

• Powerful

Woven from thousands of individual fibers. Its strength comes from the integration of the parts into a simple, single whole.

Integration – Taxonomic Table

This is integration by classification.

Kingdom

Phylum • Subphylum • Superclass

Class • Subclass • Superorder

Order • Suborder • Superfamily

Family • Subfamily

Genus • Subgenus

Species • Subspecies

As an example, consider a classification of the jaguar, a Central and South American wild cat. The Linnean classification for this animal is:

Kingdom: Animalae (all animals) Division: Chordata (all vertebrates) Class: Mammalia (all mammals) Order: Carnivora (all flesh eating) Family: Felidae (all cats) Genus: Panthera (panthers) Species: Onca (the jaguar)

A strength of Linnaean Taxonomy is that it can be used to develop a simple and practical system for organizing the different kinds of living organisms.

Integration – Periodic Table

Everything in the universe is related and composed of these few elements.

Integration – by ordering

12, 9, 15, 6, 2, 19, 5, 4, 13, 7, 18, 1, 11, 8, 15, 10, 16, 3…

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7….

Now it is simple — comprehensible.

Integration – questions to ask

1. Is there a sequence?

2. Is there a chronology?

3. Is there a logic ladder?

4. Is there a scale?

5. How can I classify these data?

6. Is there a hierarchy?

7. Is there a relationship?

8. Can some things be combined?

9. Is there a causal connection?

How can I reduce the units?

Definition of Integrate

To bring or join together a number of distinct things so that they move, operate, or function as a unit. Integrate implies that the things (as parts, elements, factors, or details) combined are brought into such intimate connection with each other that a perfect whole results.

1. To make into a whole by bringing all parts together; unify. 2.a. to join with something else; unite; b. to make part of a larger unit; integrated with the new procedures into the work routine.

— American Heritage Dictionary.

2. to make into a whole; complete, as parts do: to integrate the different circuits of a television set or computer. 3. to put or bring together (parts) into a whole; “the committee will try to integrate the different ideas into one uniformed plan.”

— World Book Dictionary

Purposes: To achieve simplicityTo become a single, integrated company

Objectives:To simplify so that we can:

Open/acquire new campusesStreamline and move fasterSave our time, money and effortFor economies of scale

Integration:To integrate, ask, sequence? Chronology? Logic ladder? Scale? Hierarchy? Relationship? Combination? Relationship?

To achieve simplicity is as simple as: Integrate to reduce the number of units.
