from its humble beginnings to the

transformative role it plays in communities

today, Meriton’s story is one of tenacity

and hard work, resulting in renowned

apartments that stand the test of time.

The Australia of the 1960s was a far different place to the diverse

community we know today. Known for their love affair with the

large backyard, Australians had a strong attachment to the quarter-

acre block and wide-open spaces. In the post-war boom, tens of

thousands of migrants then came to Australia from more densely

populated areas of the world in search of affordable accommodation,

with little desire for extra upkeep and maintenance.

Meriton founder Harry Triguboff saw an opportunity to build a new

way of life: residential apartments that would be far more affordable

than houses, with the benefit of being closer to shops, transport and

work. To this day, he has never strayed from this community vision.

It was while building his first home in Roseville in 1960 that Harry’s

knack for construction was sparked. After the builder failed to meet

his expectations, Harry took on the job himself and discovered

an untapped passion. Following the success of his first project,

Harry built his first eight-block apartment project in Tempe in 1963

with just three staff. Two-bedroom apartments in the area sold for

$9,750 each, with parking spaces at an additional $500.

In 1969, the success of Harry’s largest development of 18

apartments in Meriton Street, Gladesville gave birth to the

company name ‘Meriton’ as we know it today.

Riding the waves of good and bad market conditions, Meriton

adjusted its buying and selling strategy to ensure its long-term

survival as well as security for its customers. When conditions

became tough in the 1970s, Harry opted to adapt and lease

Meriton apartments rather than sell them — a winning strategy

still fundamental to Meriton’s business.

After Harry fell in love with the Gold Coast in 1984, Meriton

expanded interstate to Queensland, with sites snapped up in

Surfers Paradise and, later, Main Beach.

The new century saw Meriton soar to new heights, and the coining

of an endearing new nickname for its owner: “High-rise Harry”.

Meriton’s journey reached an apex with the iconic 230m World

Tower, opened in 2003 by former Prime Minister John Howard.

At 84 levels and 717 apartments, it is still Sydney’s highest

residential building. World Tower demonstrates perfect integration

of serviced and residential apartments alongside commercial and

retail space – the realisation of Harry’s vision.

Meriton made its first foray into the Brisbane market in 2012

to worldwide acclaim with ‘Soleil’, then the city’s tallest tower,

and awarded Australia’s best. Just two years later, Meriton’s

revolutionary ‘Infinity’ eclipsed Soleil as the city’s tallest tower at

81 levels, 262metres.

Meriton has always sought to make things easier for its customers

by improving upon the range of services offered. Meriton launched

its Property Finance division in 1989 as an alternative financing

solution to the major banks. Property Management followed in

1990, reducing leasing risk by guaranteeing tenants for all of its

investors.

A significant shift had occurred in the perception of apartment

living, from a cheaper necessity in the early days to a truly

enviable lifestyle. More young families are raising their children in

Meriton apartments, with facilities such as childcare centres and

playgrounds in Meriton’s new addresses.

As Meriton’s developments became larger and offered more resort-

styled facilities, it introduced its Strata Management division in

2009, looking after the day-to-day running of each development.

To complete the service, the Resales division was launched in 2010,

on-selling Meriton apartments for its loyal customers.

Meriton also offers luxury, self-contained, hotel style

accommodation. Meriton Serviced Apartments debuted in 2003

with 20 serviced apartments in Bondi Junction. Today, Meriton

offers more than 3,000 serviced apartments across Sydney,

Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The combination of prime location and management expertise has

led to Meriton retaining 2,500 apartments as a strong investment

for the future.

Over five decades, Meriton apartments have evolved from

unpretentious, affordable accommodation in Sydney’s outer

suburbs to penthouse apartments in prime locations in Australia’s

top cities. Australians have traded their backyards for balconies.

And Meriton has led the way.

As Founder and Managing Director of The Meriton Group

of Companies, Harry Triguboff A.O. has overseen the

construction of over 60,000 residential dwellings, and has

won numerous awards for his contributions to the Australian

property industry.

Harry Triguboff was born in Darien, China in 1933. He spent

his early childhood in the Russian community of Tientsin

(now Tianjin) South of Beijing.

He came to Australia in 1948 and was educated at Scots

College in Sydney, before attending Leeds University in

England. He graduated with a degree in textile engineering

and began his working life in textile businesses in Israel and

South Africa, returning to Australia in 1960.

Harry Triguboff became an Australian citizen in 1961.

He drove a taxi and owned a milk run before building his

first block of apartments and establishing Meriton at just

30 years of age; in 1963.

Since then, he has become Australia’s most successful residential

property developer and a generous philanthropist, providing millions

of dollars each year in financial support to many causes.
