What is the premise behind your landscape company? My horticultural and agricultural background, along with my passion for sustainability, bring a unique perspective to the field of landscape design. I specialize in natural design while using native plantings when desired, bringing together a unique personal experience for garden projects of all sizes and budgets. I often accompany my clients on visits to the garden centre and stone yards so they will see and understand the range of plants and materials chosen for

Tell us about the fire pits and accessories that you design: We design and build all our fire pits in house using high quality and heavy duty materials and processes. We hand weld our products using thick quarter-inch steel for a final product that will last generations. Accessories for our fire pits include a beautiful stainless grill and spark screens featuring stainless mesh to prevent burn-through.

Describe a recent project you worked on and why it was unique: Last fall we expanded our indoor fireplace tool set line with the introduction of the Estate Set. With handcrafted leather handles and powder-coat finish, we strived to set these tools apart from anything else on the market. The result is a tool set that will fit elegantly in any contemporary home and look beautiful for years to come, all while providing the functionality you need.

Describe the range of products that you sell: We carry the full line of wood, pellet and gas products for four major manufacturers – Pacific Energy, Jøtul, American Hearth and Enviro. Many of these units can be seen in our showrooms in Primrose and Clifford. We also carry Elmira cookstoves, Green Mountain pellet barbecues, cedar furniture and hammocks. Our Clifford store is opening a new leisure line of remote-controlled vehicles, model kits, paints, etc.

What’s hot in stoves and fireplaces this winter? There are new finishes and colours to fit different styles and budgets. Pacific Energy has created side panels on their Neo stoves in eight different colours as well as a soapstone-clad version. They also have a new ivory crackle finish that is very attractive. Linear fireplaces are also becoming very popular with a clean face and are now available in many sizes with different options for frames. Some have log sets inside and others have driftwood or glass.

Describe a recent timber frame project that you are particularly proud of: We are fortunate to have the opportunity to build many timber structures including timber barns, residential housing and backyard timber frame structures. We recently completed a beautiful timber frame pergola and covered porch, which backs onto the natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment. These structures provide a cosy and surreal environment and clients love having them installed by areas with a hot tub or outdoor kitchen, giving their backyard space a luxurious design.

What kind of projects do you typically work on over the winter months? We do lots of interior work like fireplace mantels, cabinets and mouldings. We can also make outdoor projects like gingerbread trim and doors in the cold months so they will be ready to install in the spring. People tend to wait until the warm weather, but this is a great time to complete your renovations because we can provide faster

turnaround in the winter months.

Describe the variety of products and services that you offer: We custom make interior and exterior wood doors, custom matched baseboards and casings, crown moulding, railings and porch posts. We sell kiln-dried lumber and do planing, sawing, sanding and gluing. Other products include door and cabinet hardware, tin ceilings, polyurethane mouldings and custom kitchens.

Tell us about the people and craftsmanship behind Jacob’s Woodworking: I started Jacob’s Woodworking in 1992 in the house we rented. The first thing I built was a sofa table for my wife. When pieces got too large to fit out the door, I rented a shop space and the business grew from there. I’m from a Mennonite background and mostly self-taught. We’re celebrating 25 years this November. Our work reflects the values that built this company – enduring, meticulously crafted, detail-oriented kitchens that you can be proud of.

What would you say to a prospective client about the Jacob’s Woodworking quality and service? When I meet with a client, it’s important for me to see their home so I can get a sense of personal style, taste and demands of the space. Are there children? Do they entertain frequently?
