Dear Parishioners, I hope that each of you had a restful and blessed Thanksgiving. Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and next weekend we begin Advent. The Christmas season will be rushing upon us. Many years ago, a priest named Miguel Pro ministered to the people of Mexico. This was in the days of the revolution when the church was heavily persecuted, particularly in southern and central
Mexico. In some states it was illegal to profess one’s faith. It was in this environment that Miguel Pro secretly celebrated Mass, administered the sacraments, and preached the Gospel. It was in this environment that lay men and women, young and old, banded together in a movement called the Cristeros. Eventually Miguel Pro was caught and executed for the treachery of proclaiming Jesus Christ. His last words were, “Long Live Christ the King!” Many other Cristeros were also educated with these words on their lips. May we live with Jesus in our hearts! Bishop Gorman will confirm five of our high school students this evening. They have been prepared for this sacrament by Father Andrew. Please keep them and all those who are being confirmed in the spring in your prayers. Included with the bulletin today is a two sided insert. On one side is a letter from Cardinal Cupich written specifically to the people of Our Lady of the Woods. It is in response to the petitions that you sent to him, Pope Francis, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops about the minimum necessary responses to the crisis facing the church. Because of the publishing requirements before Thanksgiving, I am writing this column two weeks before you are reading it. This means that I am writing as the Bishops’ Conference is being held and you are reading it after the conference. It is my hope that the leaders of the conference have already begun taking the necessary steps to hold church leaders responsible and to show this by giving lay leadership real authority to hold them accountable and to be transparent. They need to make clear to church leaders around the world and in the Vatican that the time for action is now. On the other side of this handout is information about FORMED. This is a revolutionary digital platform that gives our parish unprecedented access to video-based study programs, feature films, audio presentations, and eBooks from the Church’s foremost presenters, all at no cost to you. You can initially access this through a parish code and then create your own password. Too many Catholics know very little about their faith and this is an opportunity to learn. This platform contains authors and teachers well versed in our Catholic faith. I encourage every parishioner to sign up. In Christ,
Father Mike
