Remembering When Jesus broke the bread on the night before he died, he told his disciples, “do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19). Christians have been faithful to that sol-emn command. Our eucharistic remembering is not nostal-gia, nor is it merely historical, recalling events and facts of long ago. In the liturgy, remembering is action. “Do this,” Jesus said. In the Eucharist, we remember by doing. And as we remember, the sacrifice of Jesus is renewed, truly made present, no longer then, but now. After the consecration, each of the Eucharistic Prayers includes a section called the anamnesis, a Greek word that means “remembering.” In this part of the prayer, “the Church, fulfilling the command that she received from Christ the Lord through the Apostles, keeps the memorial of Christ, recalling especially his blessed Passion, glorious Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven” (General In-struction of the Roman Missal, 79e). We pause and call to mind the whole paschal mystery, Christ’s dying and rising. “We celebrate the memory of his death and resurrec-tion” (Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation II). Obeying Christ’s command, recognize that Jesus is the Messiah fore-told by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, “be opened,” used to describe we remember.

The choir would like to encourage everyone to keep their member, singer and friend Don-na Smith in their prayers. Donna, who has

been fighting cancer for some time, was recently placed on hospice care. Those of you who know Donna know that she’s a tough cookie and a fighter, but please pray for Donna and her husband Harry at this very difficult time. Many thanks. The choir is hoping to travel to Donna’s home in the next week or two to serenade her so if you have cards or notes of encourage-ment you’d like us to carry to her when we do so, please just give them to any choir member. God bless you for your pray-ers and thoughtfulness.

Bishop George Leo has re-quested a special collection be taken this weekend. The funds collected will be used to help the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in Haiti.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

We, the family of Our Lady of the Valley parish in Pahrump, Nevada, a growing town rich in our traditions, recognize that our mission is to give glory and praise to God as a community united in faith. Mary is our patroness, our inspiration to be faithful to Jesus Christ in the Eucharist which is the center of the life of the church, the source of our energies and the summit of our celebration. We are a community gifted with many talents and are called to share these gifts to their greatest potential in the service and work of God. We proclaim the “Good News” of Jesus Christ with other Christians through words, actions and service to others; and by being loving, compassionate and forgiving people; seeking to help others in need, especially the sick, the poor and the elderly.
