O UR L ADY OF T HE S NOWS C ATHOLIC A CADEMY With March upon us, the 100th day of school behind us, and the excitement and nervousness of a new semester now a distant memory, one cannot help but fondly reflect upon all the cherished memories created in February. As you read through the highlights of this newsletter, we should all give thanks for just how blessed we are to be part of such a wonderful culture and environment at OLS that could not exist without all involved--the dedicated staff of OLS; the supportive parent community; our most cherished gifts, the children; and, our renowned School Council. Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting, which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Students attended mass on February 26th at which time they received ashes on their foreheads, a symbol of repentance. On Shrove Tuesday, staff, student and parent volunteers prepared pancakes and sliced oranges for the entire school. Also In February, teachers participated in Christ the Redeemer Catholic School Divisions annual Faith Days in Okotoks as the entire division came together to celebrate our Catholic schools through mass, adoration and insightful and inspiring discussions led by David Wells and Sarah Hart. Learning, as always, was on display with students involved in multiple field trips including: grade one skating, grade two swimming, grade three cross country skiing, and grade six cross country skiing. In early March, the grade four and five students will have their opportunity to get out on a field trip with swimming and rock climbing at Elevation Place. Teachers were also immersed in learning as we attended our annual TeachersConvention on February 20-21st where we had the opportunity to listen and learn from some world-class speakers in education. School Council once again provided our students in kindergarten to grade five an opportunity to watch a production by Alberta Musical Theatre Company; this year students were treated to Sleeping Beauty. We are very grateful for the School Councils continued support of programs and opportunities that would not be possible without dedicated parents that volunteer their time to fundraise and run events. I would encourage any parents and guardians to consider donating to our Kindergarten Craft Supply Support through Christ the Redeemers website, which can be found here. Programs can be very expensive to run, and OLS does not charge fees for curricularly based programing. With that in mind, we do appreciate anything that families can offer as we continue to strive to provide the best quality education for our students on a modest budget. School Councils biggest fundraiser of the year, Mardi Gras, took place on February 7th. Students staff, and parent volunteers came together to deliver a great night of family fun. Parents had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction while kids had access to various games, a dance, bouncy castles, a photo booth and much more. The event was a huge success! Save the date for next years Mardi Gras which will be held on February 5th, 2021! Jamie Landry

With March upon us, the 100th day of school behind us, and the excitement and nervousness of a new semester now a distant memory, one cannot help but fondly reflect upon all the cherished memories created in February.

The Lenten Season began this last Wednesday with Ash Wednesday and lasts 40 days, ending on Holy Saturday. How can Lent be 40 days if Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter? The Lenten fast does not include Sundays, which are considered feast days (a celebration of the resurrection)—so the six Sundays before Easter are omitted from the 40-day observance of fasting. Lent will be followed by the Easter Season which lasts fifty days, until Pentecost Sunday.

    Monthly Virtue—Forgiveness

“I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:22)

Jesus said: "Do to others as you would wish them do to you" (Luke 6:31). Help us, God, to remember this Gold-en Rule, and have the courage to forgive one another and treat each other with respect. When someone you care about hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge —or

embrace forgiveness and move forward. Forgiveness is letting go of grudges and bitterness. By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy.

“Not everything in life is resolved by justice. Especially where it is necessary to put a stop to evil, someone

must love beyond what is necessary, in order to restart a story of grace. Evil knows how to take revenge, and, if

we do not interrupt it, evil risks spreading, suffocating the whole world.” Pope Francis

The Wicked Witch of the Wetlands

As a certain Good Witch once said to a certain young girl on a quest, “There’s no place like home.” Wise words, to be sure. But it’s easy to forget that these same words are true for the creatures and plant life that dwell in the threatened ecosystems that help to sustain our planet. In this Oz-inspired marshland adventure tale from award-winning playwright Jana O’Connor, Dorothy is a plucky, quirky grade five student who is happiest when learning on the go, and most at home in the great outdoors. When she discovers that her beloved wetland stomping grounds are threatened, she follows her heart (as she follows the yellow slick toad) on an epic jour-ney to find the Wizard of Bog, protect the peat, and save the sloughs!
