Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 8, 2019 First reading: Wisdom 9:13-18b Second reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17 Gospel: Luke 14:25-33 A reading from the Book of Wisdom Who can know God’s counsel, or who can conceive what the LORD intends? For the deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans. For the corruptible body burdens the soul and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns. And scarce do we guess the things on earth, and what is within our grasp we find with difficulty, but when things are in heaven, who can search them out? Or who ever knew your counsel, except you had given wisdom and sent your holy spirit from on high? And thus were the paths of those on earth made straight. A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to Philemon I, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for Christ Jesus, urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment; I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I should have liked to retain him for myself, so that he might serve me on your behalf in my impris-onment for the gospel, but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary. Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man and in the Lord. So if you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and ad-dressed them, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself un-able to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can suc-cessfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

Pray for the Dead PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED for our Parishioners,

Religious Education Office Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 1, 2019 Sunday’s Gospel Luke 14:1,7-14. Reflection for Parents Most often the role of a parent is cast in humility. When we think back on our own childhoods, even if we have taken the time to tell our parents how much we appreciate all they did for us, children rarely take in the whole scope of what their parents do for them. Yes, in some cases we might even say what par-ents sacrifice for them, but it’s hard to call something a sacri-fice when it’s given out of love. Still, parents know what it means to provide for someone who cannot repay us. We don’t expect our children to repay us financially for what we’ve given them in food, clothing, shelter, educa-tion, and entertainment. Not only is it not real-istic, but it’s just not the way it works! We understand the meaning of this Gospel in con-nection with our children, but how much greater our understanding will be if we reach beyond our own family to provide for someone in our society who cannot begin to repay us Bringing the Good News Into Your Family Using your parish bulletin, local newspaper, or knowledge you have of your community, find someone or a group of people who cannot repay a kindness from you. Decide as a family what you will do to serve this person or group. Perhaps you can help serve a meal at a soup kitchen or hunger center. Maybe you can provide clothing or transportation to a family strug-gling at this time. You might look for non-profit organizations that rely on volunteers in order to provide services to the com-munity. When you have finished your service experience, read this passage again and share together how you lived the Gospel message this week. Question of the Week Children: Does it make you a better person to be chosen first for a team or some other honor? Why or why not? Adults: Has the hunger for status and influence in the world around you endangered your life as a Christian? Attention Parents Classes will start Wednesday, September 4, 2019 Hours: 6:15pm to 7:45pm. Thank you and God bless.

DID YOU KNOW? The right kind of touch is important for children Children are often naturally affectionate and trusting, and this can lead to unexpected hugs or touches that indicate their love for the adults in their lives. For adults who are aware that some touching can be inappropriate or can appear to be a boundary violation even though it was initiated by the child, it can be difficult to respond in these instances. Healthy, appropriate touch is important for children. Use these instances as teach-able moments where you can affirm your affection in words and guide an appropriate touch by description and exam-ple. Some examples of this could include patting a child on the shoulder or back, high fives, holding hands out of the classroom or when crossing the street, or helping a young child tie his shoelaces. As part of our commitment, the Archdiocese has updated the www.archla.org/protect website with valuable information and resources on how to protect our children and young people from child sexual abuse. For more information, read the VIRTUS® article “The Healing Power of Touch, Part II” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
