First Sunday of Advent - December 1, 2019

Next Weekend . . .

“Swords into Ploughshares”The first reading of the entire Advent season presents

Isaiah’s famous dream of a people at peace: “They shall beattheir swords into plowshares and their spears into pruninghooks.” How can we get that peace?

In Isaiah’s vision, that peace comes from the word of theLord. That word comes from Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalemsits on a hill, but it is a stubby little hill. Other hills are larger. But Isaiah prophesies that Jerusalem’s hill will be establishedas the highest mountain. All will stream toward it to hear God’sword.

For Christians, when we hear this prophecy on the FirstSunday of Advent, we imagine Isaiah’s dream on a granderscale. We see heaven as the new Jerusalem, establishedhigher than anywhere else. We see all peoples streamingtoward it for instruction. The word that comes from the newJerusalem is the Word made flesh at Bethlehem. We yearn tohear that word and form our lives by it.

This day, let us hear the word of God. Let us take theweapons we hurl at our neighbors—the angry words, thehurtful deeds—and beat them into plowshares that open fertilesoil of communication and into pruning hooks that weaverenewed relationships of peace.

“Alarm Clock”People act differently at night than they do in the day. In the

day we are busy with personal responsibilities, but nights inviterelaxation. On some nights, we relax too much. Some peoplelet their guard down at night. In the dark we are more prone tocommit crime and enter sin, as if no one can see.

When the hour comes to wake from sleep, we are filledwith expectation and remorse. We look forward to the promiseof the coming day, but we regret the sins of the past.

Advent is here. The alarm has just gone off. St. Paul says,“It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep.” Paul is nottalking about the dawn of another weekday. He speaks of thedawn of an eternal day. Our salvation is near at hand. The risenChrist longs to enter our hearts and dwell there by faith.

We have to quit acting like it is night. We should behave asif it were eternal day. Our responsibilities as Christians continuein every circumstance—when we are at work or at play, whenwe are active or at rest. The faithful Christian remains vigilant atall hours, so that we will be ready for Christ when he comes.

Christ is coming soon. Our salvation is near at hand. Letus spend this Advent doing the deeds of day, and avoiding thedeeds of darkness.Written by Paul Turner. Grateful Stewardsof God’s Gifts . . .

“The kingdom of God is among you” Luke 17:21

Since the moment of your baptism, the Father, Son, andHoly Spirit came to dwell in you. Yes, we find God at church,in the Eucharist. And we can certainly find God in our sistersand brothers, especially the poor and needy. And God isever-present in our Bibles, ready to speak to us. But evenwhen we feel alone, we are not alone. God is within, lovingus and holding us in that caring love. We can make timeeach day to sit quietly and enter within ourselves to restwith God and let God refresh us. We have all the divinestrength, love, and care present within us at every moment.

An excerpt from Living with Christ

We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving andthat being with family and friends will be happy and peaceful.Family gatherings can sometimes bring some tension, sowe pray that everything goes well.

We are blessed to be the children of God, to know that nomatter what happens our Father in heaven will always bewith us, love us, accept us, forgive us, all if we just openourselves to Him. Our Lord speaks to us in many ways, Hecomes to us through Scripture, our family, nature, and allthat is good. During the upcoming holidays when thingsbecome rushed and hectic, we must remember to maketime for God. He will help us stay focused on what is trulyimportant during Advent, it’s not just about gift giving butreceiving the love and joy that only God can give.
