L L

O L L . Lent will officially conclude on Holy Thursday when we begin the Sacred Triduum. The days of Lent have all been leading up to the celebra on of the Triduum, the three days when we focus intently on the mystery of our salva on won for us by the saving passion, death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ. But this Sunday we begin Holy Week with the observance of Passion, Palm Sunday. Each year we gather to hear the Passion proclaimed on this day and we hold alo palm branches with which we acclaim Christ as our Redeemer. Just as the Lord asked his disciples at the hour of his agony in the garden, he asks us to draw close to him: “Remain here and keep watch with me” (Ma hew 26:38). This Holy Week can be a me of renewal for our faith and a hope that we become ever closer to the Lord in friendship.

A M P S , the priest addresses these words to the assembly: “Today we gather to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebra on of the Lord’s Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of his Passion and Resurrec on. For it was to accomplish this mystery that he entered his own city of Jerusalem. T , , let us commemorate the Lord’s entry into the city for our salva on, following in his footsteps, so that, being made by his grace partakers of the Cross, we have a share also in his resurrec on and life.” With the celebra on of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion we cross the threshold and enter the most sacred me in the Chris an Year: Holy Week; these are seven days that commemorate the central mysteries of our faith in Jesus Christ and give us a privileged me of grace to accompany the Lord as he opens for us the gates of salva on.

T J C won for us by his passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead; these are the days to seek closer friendship with the Lord and to recognize our need to be connected to Christ’s body, the Church. Our first reading for the Mass of Palm Sunday is from the Prophet Isaiah; the prophet reflects upon his God given voca on: “Morning a er morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back” (Isaiah 50:4-5). As we come towards the end of Lent we are reminded that our journey towards conversion does not end with Lent. Rather, the work of being converted to the Lord, pu ng aside selfishness and self-centeredness, living for others, and in fidelity to the Gospel requires a willingness to open our hearts “morning a er morning” to hear the voice of God, le ng go of those things that hinder our growth in rela onship with God and finding our joy in the light of the Risen Christ.

D H W , S T – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday – the liturgies celebrated will touch you and speak to your heart; the Lord has a word of grace to speak to us as individuals and as a community. It is a privilege to be able to take part in the liturgies of Holy Week and I encourage you to join with our community in praising God for the gi of salva on during this special me. Life is busy, many concerns press in us, especially when so much of our area has been inundated by floods and all of the anxiety and frustra on that goes along with them. The celebra ons of Holy Week are an opportunity to step back from the ordinary events of our lives, important as they are in their own right, to reflect upon the path that we walk with the Lord Jesus each day.

O P S , in the presence of the Lord among us: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!” (Mark 11:9). As we enter into Holy Week with the celebra on of Palm Sunday we are mindful of the king whom we follow. Jesus is not an earthly king who clings to wealth, power, and posi on. Jesus is the King who manifests his true glory by laying down his life for sinners on the wood of the cross. Through his blood we are washed clean of our sins; through the blood and water that flow from his side the sacramental life of the Church is given life and we are all able to have confidence in the promise of eternal life with the Lord.

O H T E M L ’ S we find ourselves in the upper room with the Lord and his disciples, we reverence the gi of the Eucharist, thank God for the gi of the priesthood, and recommit ourselves to be faithful servants of the one who washes the feet of his disciples and who encourages us by example to follow this example of humble, selfless service. Saint John’s Gospel tells us that the Lord gave this as a command: “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that what I have done for you, you should also do” (John 13:14-15). The Eucharist strengthens us in our

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

call to be servants of the Lord Jesus and one another.

O G F L P L we are awed by the supreme sacrifice of Christ in laying down his life for our sins. The beau ful language of the Prophet Isaiah turns our minds eye to the suffering servant who died to make us whole: “Yet it was our infirmi es that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smi en by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chas sement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed” (Isaiah 53:4-5). The Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ, calls us to turn away from sin, to embrace repentance and to make of ourselves an offering of our lives to God.

O H S , I R S , we are delivered from the slavery of sin and take our places as God’s children, redeemed and sanc fied by the blood of the lamb. We can sing with the Israelites of long ago: “My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. He is my God, I praise him; the God of my father, I extol him” (Exodus 15:2). These are very special days and celebra ons, please join us. Giving your me to the Lord, the most precious gi that we have, will help to renew your hearts and make you joyful in the celebra on of Easter morning. These celebra ons help us to view our lives in the light of the risen Christ who gives us the gi of eternal life.

I M 2, 2017 M , H F , P F , spoke of remaining with Christ on the journey of faith; the Va can News Service provides this summary of the Holy Father’s medita on:

Here, then, is ‘the reality of man: we are faced with good and evil — the reality of God — God-made-Christ — and the third human reality, the reality of the journey.’ The ques on to ask then is, “‘how do we go, which road do we take?’” The Pope answered by referring to Jesus’ own words: ‘If any man would come a er me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’ Because, the Pope affirmed, ‘the reality of the journey is that of Christ: following Christ, doing the will of the Father, as he did, by taking up the daily crosses and denying ourself in order to follow Christ.’ This means ‘not doing what I want, but what Jesus wants: following Jesus.’ And Jesus says ‘that on this path we lose our life so as to regain it a erwards; it is a con nuous loss of life, the loss of “doing what I want”, the loss of material comforts, of always being on the path of Jesus, who was in service to others, to the adora on of God: that is the just path.’

T H F in keeping the Chris an life vital and effec ve. This Holy Week is a me of intense prayer. It is a me for us, as much as possible, to keep watch with the Lord, to listen to his voice, and recommit ourselves to following him. Please don’t let the opportunity to walk with the Lord Jesus during the Sacred Triduum, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday pass by without taking advantage of God’s word and sacrament that is celebrated in the liturgy. Please take part in the liturgies of Holy Week. I know that you will be moved by them and your faith will be strengthened by the experience. Our Holy Week and Easter Schedule may be found on the front of the bulle n. The liturgies of Holy Week, especially the liturgies of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, the liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night are the most beau ful liturgies of the church year. I know that if you take part in one or all of these liturgies you will never experience Holy Week and Easter in the same way again. These liturgies help us to really understand what we mean when we proclaim in every Eucharist, the “Mystery of faith.” The liturgies of the Sacred Triduum help us to open our hearts to the gi of God’s life that is given to us as a gi through the saving passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead of Jesus Christ our Lord. Join us! During Holy Week and the Triduum we walk with the Lord with all faith and devo on and joyfully celebrated the great mysteries of our faith. What gi , grace, and joy this week is for all of us and a precious opportunity for the Lord to speak to our hearts.

C M , A 10, 2017 7:00 S P A P , C ; 6:45 . The Chrism Mass is the liturgy at which the Bishop blesses the oil and

consecrates the sacred chrism that is used for the celebra on of the Sacraments during the liturgical year. Please join Bishop Serratelli at this Mass at which the priests renew the promises made at the me of their ordina on. Please pray for priests in a special way on Monday of Holy Week as they gather with the Bishop to concelebrate this Mass; please pray that we are all worthy servants of the Lord and never grow indifferent to the gi of the priesthood and the promises made to the Lord at the me of our ordina on.

T S R

In order to prepare for the celebra on of the great feast of Easter, the Sacrament of Reconcilia on will once again be available in Church on G F , A 14 : 10:00 12:00 . According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

‘The whole power of the Sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God's grace and joining us with him in an in mate friendship.’ Reconcilia on with God is thus the purpose and effect of this sacrament. For those who receive the Sacrament of Penance with contrite heart and religious disposi on, reconcilia on ‘is usually followed by peace and serenity of conscience with strong spiritual consola on.’ Indeed the Sacrament of Reconcilia on with God brings about a true ‘spiritual resurrec on,’ restora on of the dignity and blessings of the life of the children of God, of which the most precious is friendship with God (n. 1468).

As we draw closer to Easter, celebra on of the Sacrament of Reconcilia on is an opportunity to open our hearts to the power of God’s mercy and to leave aside those ways of living that do not foster a deeper rela onship with God or one another and having received the gi of God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on we celebrate Easter with a heart renewed.

E F M

Those who want to remember deceased loved ones through the Easter flowers that will decorate the church please use the envelopes at the entrance to the church and return them by today, Sunday, April 9th. Please clearly print the names of your deceased loved ones on the envelopes so that they may be added to our Book of Remembrance.

G F C H L

On Good Friday we will have our annual collec on for the Shrines in the Holy Land. For nearly eight-hundred years, the Franciscans have been serving the shrines of the Holy Land, celebra ng the sacraments, preaching God’s word, and providing hospitality to visitors. Bishop Serratelli asks that we be as generous as we are able in order to support the work of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. Thank you for your con nued generosity.

P R

As you know, parking spaces are at a premium in our parking lot. Please do not waste spaces by failing to pull all the way through to the first space available. When spaces are wasted we squeeze our already insufficient parking to its limit and people who need to be able to park close to the church then need to walk long distances. Please be though ul in the way that you park and please be aware of the needs of others. I thank you for your pa ence. At this especially busy me of the year, I ask that we all try to be a en ve to doing the best that we can with our limited parking.

Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

Faith Formation Corner Attention 2nd Grade Parents As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together began on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and continues through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.

These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 mass together are as follows:

4/23, 4/30

We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.

Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are especially in need of servers for the Saturday and Sunday evening masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server.

Lectors Readers Wanted! We are in need of lectors to read once per month during one of our liturgies. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming a lector.

Our Music Ministry Needs You! Join us in our Adult and Children’s Choirs as we share our love for the Lord and praise Him through music. For more information, contact Stella at 973-256-5200 x-23 or talk to her after mass.

Faith Formation Assistants Classroom Assistants are needed for our Faith Formation Program. Please contact Trish Filiaci at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

Food Bank Community food bank dates have been set for this year. It is a wonderful ministry and opportunity to work with others to help feed the hungry. For more specific information about dates and what is involved in this ministry, please contact Laura Sodano at [email protected].
