From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Happy Epiphany! Today’s Solemnity is often called “Little Christmas.” It celebrates the coming of the “three kings,” the “magi” or “wise men,” to the Infant Jesus and recalls how they brought Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrhh. This event is recounted in the Gospel of St. Matthew (2:1-12). The term “Epiphany” comes from the Greek word, “epiphanein,” meaning a “showing,” “appearance or revelation.” In the persons of these rather exotic figures from the East, we learn that Jesus came as a Savior not only for the Jewish people but for all peoples. The Gospel does not specify that there were three magi, but tradition presumed this because three gifts are mentioned. By the 9th century, legends gave the Magi names: Melchior, who offered gold; Casper, who brought frankincense, and Balthasar, who presented myrrh. Their gifts reveal the Infant’s identify! The gold denotes His Kingship; the frankincense, His divinity (incense was used in temple worship); and the myrrh His humanity (Myrrh was used in burial rites and points us to the Lord’s sacrificial death for our salvation.) The Magi remind us of our duty to offer the Lord the gift of ourselves! Our gift of gold is using the gifts and talents God has given us for the glory of God and in the service of others. Our gift of frankincense could be the reverence and attention with which we worship. The gift of myrrh are the sacrifices that we can offer throughout each day and the manner in which we take up our daily cross. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Lò a vle di otorite Li kòm Wa; lansan an endike divinite Li, (lansan an te itilize nan Tanp adorasyon an), epi pafen santi bon an menm se imilite Li (pafen santi bon sa a te itilize nan rit finerè epi endike nou sakrifis lanmò Granmèt la pou sove nou). Wa maj yo raple nou devwa nou pou nou ofri tout nou menm a GranMèt la! Kado lò nou an se lè nap itilize don ak talan nou yo ke Bondye ban nou pou nou fè lwanj pou Li epi sèvi Li nan lòt moun. Kado lansan ta kapab reverans ak atansyon a Sila ke nou ap adore a. Kado pafen santi bon yo, se sakrifis yo ke nap ofri chak jou yo ak fason nap pote kwa nou chak jou. Avèk afeksyon,
Msgr. Gervasio

Along with this report we shall provide an accounting of the appeal’s disbursements. Thanks for your goodness and loyalty to the parish.

Tax Info In order to ensure that all donations are reflected, contribution statements will not be available until the end of January. If you would like to pick up a copy of your 2016 contribution statement, please call the parish office (587-4372) and leave your name and phone number with your request. You will be told when the statement will be available. If you would prefer to have your statement mailed to you, please put a business-size self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) in the collection basket or mail or drop one off to the parish office (beneath Our Lady of Sorrows Church). Statements will be mailed only to those who have provided a SASE.
Requirements for Baptism Attend a Pre-Baptism Instruction Session—This is usually held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at Our Lady of Sorrows Church Meeting Room, at 7:00 p.m. If you live outside the parish territory, you may attend an instruction in a parish nearby. Please submit a letter from that parish verifying your attendance. Choose a sponsor/godparent—The role of sponsor or godparent is that of modeling Catholic life. We ask that this be confirmed by submitting a letter or certificate of eligibility from the parish that the sponsor/godparent currently attends. They need not submit their own certificates of baptism and/or confirmation. In order to be a godparent, one must be: at least 16 years old (our pastor may dispense
this requirement if the person has received Confirmation);
a Catholic who has received the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation;
in a valid marriage, if married, in accord with Church law; and
leading a life in harmony with the Catholic faith; While the common practice is to name two godparents (male and female), only one godparent is required. Once cannot have two godparents of the same sex. A non-Catholic Christian, while unable to serve as a godparent, may be admitted as a "Christian Witness." A Catholic who does not meet the qualifications to be a godparent is not permitted as a Christian Witness. For more information, please contact the Parish Office (587-4372; [email protected]).

Keep Us Posted—We Care!
Whether you registered as a parishioner seven years ago or seven times seven years ago, things change. Your household grows as you welcome babies; it shrinks as your adult children move out to pursue a career. Elderly parents may move in with you or someone in your family may need to be moved to a skilled nursing care facility. You may upsize or downsize, moving within or out of the parish boundaries. We care about the changes in your life, so please keep us informed if one of your loved ones is hospitalized or moves into assisted living or a nursing home. Let us know when you’re moving—we may not join your painting party, but we will update our records. And please explain to your children that once they’re out of your home and living independently, they need to register on their own. This is a simple task but is very helpful when the time comes to request a letter of eligibility to serve as a sponsor for baptism and/or confirmation as well as letters of reference or recommendation.
The K of C Invites You What: Family Movie Night: Risen When: Wednesday, January 25, at 7:00 p.m. Where: Columbus Hall, 1451 Klockner Road, Hamilton NJ 08619 Cost: Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided free of charge.
Risen (PG-13; 1 hr., 47 min; 2016) In AD 33, a Roman Tribune in Judea is tasked to find the missing body of an executed Jewish man rumored
to have risen from the dead. "...adopts a lighter, more playful tone than most Hollywood biblical epics...as it tells a slow-moving
story of spiritual awakening." From a Variety review by Justin Chang. "Risen accomplishes something quite remarkable: It tells the familiar, timeless story of Jesus' death and resurrection from a fresh vantage point." From PluggedIn.com.
Caring Hearts Report During December, more than 265 hours of service (e.g., visiting, transportation, shopping, reassurance calls, paperwork assistance, chores, housekeeping, and the delivery of Christmas baskets) were provided by 44 volunteers to 45 persons. Caring Hearts volunteers provide non-medical services to our homebound elderly and disabled neighbors. If you would like more information on joining this satisfying ministry, either as a caregiver or a care receiver, please call Anne at 586-6596.

News from Our Parish School Baby, it's cold outside! Yes, the winter chill of January has found us but the warmth of good friends keeps us comfortable! Each morning, our dedicated patrols from Grade 5 brave the cold weather to welcome our students into school. Colin McCormick and Mary O'Shaunesey open each car door with a smile and a welcoming hello. Along with faculty representatives, the children ensure that each student is given the help they need to exit their cars and manage their belongings. Their good works haven't gone unnoticed. The many waves, smiles and shouts of "Thanks" pepper the morning routine, but it was a welcome morning basket that really put the "warmth in their tummies!” The Sharkey Family (Ben and Kate) surprised the Morning Patrols with a gift of warmth—a basket of cocoa, warm cider, marshmallows, and safety cups! On these chilly mornings, they now can stop by the Office to select from their special basket of warmth! Many thanks go out to the Fifth Grade children that apply for this Patrol position for their determination, diligence and caring behaviors. These are the first smiling faces that greet the students each morning. They set the pace for the day! And most sincere thanks to the Starkey Family for their special thank you!
Colin McCormick (left) and Mary O'Shaughnessy (right) flank Benjamin Starkey (holding the basket of goodies) and OLS School principal Donald Costantino.

March for Life – Washington, D.C. 44th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision
Join pilgrims from all over the United States in sending a clear message that we are committed to defending life—all life from conception to natural death. We cannot and will not accept the continuing slaughter of innocent unborn babies, a slaughter that has prevented over 50 million babies from ever being born and thus experiencing the joys of life and freedom our wonderful country provides. Both the Hamilton and St. Gregory the Great Councils of the Knights of Columbus are once again co-sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C., for those who would like to participate in the 2017 Right to Life March, scheduled for Friday, January 27. Please join your fellow parishioners and hundreds of thousands of others in our quest to defend the right of all, born and unborn, to that precious gift from God—Life. The Right to Life March is a very special event, with sincere and dedicated people of all ages and backgrounds. The bus will leave Our Lady of Sorrows’ parking lot at 7:30 a.m. and return by 9:30 p.m. The cost is still only $15 per adult and $5 per child. If you are interested in reserving space or would like to know more about the trip, call Rich or Mary Morey at 588-8921. We will operate on a first-come, first serve basis, so please make your reservations as soon as possible. We urge you to consider joining us this year.
