From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

"Surrexit Christus, spes mea" "Christ, my hope, has risen"

These are the joyous words that the Church places on the lips of Mary Magdalene found in the Sequence of the Mass of Easter! It is a cry we make our own having concluded the penitential practices of Lent! Benedict XVI, our Pope Emeritus, tells us that “every Christian relives the experience of Mary Magdalene” since our encounter with the Lord changes our life. The Lord sets us free from sin, heals us and restores our dignity. Pope Benedicts says:

This is why Mary Magdalene calls Jesus ‘my hope’: he was the one who allowed her to be reborn, who gave her a new future, a life of goodness and freedom from evil. ‘Christ my hope’ means that all my yearnings for goodness find in him a real possibility of fulfillment; with him I can hope for a life that is good, full, and eternal, for God himself has drawn near to us, even sharing our humanity.

May our Easter Sunday celebration, which the Church extends over the next fifty days, be marked by profound joy and hope. Today we renew the promises of our Baptism. May we be ever faithful and joyful in living the faith the promises express! Happy Easter to all! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Frè-m ak Sè-m yo,

Se pou selebrasyon fèt Pak nou an, ke Legliz la pwolonje pou yon lòt 50 jou, make pa yon kè kontan ak espwa. Jodia nou renouvle pwomès Batèm nou, Se pou nou toujou fidèl, gen kè kontan pandan nap viv nan lafwa pwomès Batèm yo! Bòn Fèt Pak! Avèk Afeksyon,

Msgr. Gervasio

Liturgical Lines…The Easter Season The Church’s celebration of Easter is a season of fifty days, beginning with the Sunday of the Resurrection through Pentecost, that are to be celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, as one great Sunday. These are days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung. Liturgical norms guiding this season are as follows: The first days eight days of season make up the

“octave” Easter and are celebrated as “solemnities.” During these days, as well as at Pentecost, a double “alleluia” is added to the dismissal of the Mass.

The sequence Victimae Paschali (the Paschal Victim) is sung at the Mass of Easter Sunday.

During the season special prayers should be included at Mass for the newly baptized.

The paschal candle, a symbol of the Risen Christ among His people, remains in the sanctuary near the altar or the ambo. It should be lighted at all liturgical services during the season.

A vessel containing water blessed at the Solemn Easter Vigil could be put in a suitable place in church, available for the faithful.

Baking Bread; Breaking Bread

Our First Holy Communion students have been given a little project to do. As they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist for the first time, we have asked them to bake bread with their parents and share it after Mass on Sunday, April 3. Part of being a Christian is learning to share even if we have only a little. Please keep them all in your prayers.

Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle.

Thursdays Are Days Of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord’s call…He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord’s Presence?

The Fruits of Your Sacrifices… The first of our parish rebates has arrived...

Faith to Move Mountains… I am pleased to report that we have received the first of our “rebates” from the Faith to Move Mountains Endowment Campaign. These funds that are part of the parish sharing component of the appeal amounted to $67,192.26 and represent 30% of the funds received to this point. The funds have been invested and will go a long way in helping us complete the window replacement project for our school. Here is an update on the status of the parish’s participation in the campaign: Diocesan Goal: $75,000,000 Parish Goal: $1,495,000 Pledge Total: $961,700 Total Collected: $223,974 (as of 2/29/16) Thanks to all those who pledged. Your support not only strengthens the future ministry of the diocese but also helps our parish meet its own needs. Gifts/Pledges are always welcome! If you have not pledged or given, your support is always welcome. Please contact the parish office for details or place your pledge and/or gift in the regular collection, clearly marking the envelope: Faith to Move Mountains Wouldn’t it be wonderful to reach the million dollar mark? (30% of $1,000,000 is $300, 000!)

Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you.

Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church.

Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to

proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great.

We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you.

Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us

and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

A Great Job Many thanks to our volunteer maintenance team who took the time and great effort to clean the doors and windows of the main entrance of St. Anthony Church. It was a very involved process owning of the decorative wrought iron gratings above the doors. Their work restores the luster of these entrances to the Lord’s House. Thanks to Lew Gryziewicz, Tim Jones, Steve Kovacs, Joe Novak, and Stan Nowalski!

Parish School News The latest news is in: Handwriting is alive and well at Our Lady of Sorrows School! We have all heard so much about the loss of handwriting instruction in our schools, but we are proud to say that once again OLS School exceeds the standards. The children are instructed in the skills of handwriting throughout the Lower School grade levels. Strong evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development run deep. “When we write, a unique neural circuit is automatically activated,” said Stanislas Dehaene, a psychologist at the Collège de France in Paris. The research tells us it is not only what we write, but how. We are proud to share the outstanding handwriting skills of our students. Each year, the Zaner-Bloser company (you may recall that name from your elementary school days) sponsors a Writing Excellence competition. Thanks in large part to Marlane Schreier and Joann Dusenshine, who coordinate and support our school's participation in the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Excellence Program, a host of outstanding entries have been received from both our Lower and Upper schools even though participation is voluntary! We acknowledge the winners at each grade level: Kindergarten-Danielle Butterfield, Grade 1-Carly Anderson Grade 2-Lena Sharibone, Grade 3-Michael Busa, Grade 4-Dana Antoye, Grade 5-Connor Urban, Grade 6-Kayla Paguio, Grade 7-Christopher DelCristo, Grade 8-Julio Juarez. These grade level winners are up against some very stiff competition, for a number of the entries have been past winners at the Zaner-Bloser National Excellence level! We are increasingly learning about the benefits of handwriting. “With handwriting, the very act of putting it down forces you to focus on what’s important,” said a Yale reseracher, “Maybe it helps you think better.” (source: NY Times Our parish school offers so very much for our students. For just over $25 a day, our students are offered an outstanding educational program, faith formation, and the opportunity to grow in a loving environment. Why not make Our Lady of Sorrows School part of your child's development? It may be the most important decision that you make for your child's future. They deserve the best. Stop by to learn how our parish school can work for your family.

Gervasio and the Social Justice Committee are happy to announce that our Lenten Work of Mercy will be to help our dear friend, Fr Eugene Savarimuthu, care for the people of his parish. Fr. Gene returned to India after serving the people of OLS-SA for 6 years, and became the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sikkalnayaganpet parish, a part of the diocese of Kumbankonam in Tamilnadu, India. Last year, he undertook a major project to build a community center where the people could gather for celebrations, classes, after school programs, health clinics and more. We raised $25,000 and now the community center is 90% complete. Fr Gene tells us that they will formally open and dedicate the community center on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19. A plaque will commemorate the sacrifices made by the people of OLS-SA to build the center. Already, the center is being used to hold sewing classes for local women, to house the after school program, and to host parish gatherings. All the people of Fr Gene’s parish know the name “Our Lady of Sorrows-St Anthony” and remember us and our intentions in their prayers. Fr Gene’s parish is in a very rural region of India where there are sanitation problems beyond Western imagination. With its 1.25 billion inhabitants, nearly 800 million people in the country live without basic sanitation. Approximately 65% of the people are forced to defecate in the open. Open defecation spreads diseases like cholera and E. coli and contaminates unprotected water sources. It also causes a serious safety problem for the girls and women in the villages. The lack of toilets in their homes exposes women to the risk of being harassed or raped when they rise at night or before dawn in search of a little privacy to attend to their toiletry needs in the fields. Fr. Gene wants to have every home in his parish equipped with a sanitary toilet. His goal is to provide 50 toilets

this year. Men and women from each family in the village will contribute their own time, energy, and labor to build

their own toilet for their house. He asks our help in providing some of the costs for materials.

Fr Gene and members of his parish have framed a construction plan that could be achieved through collaboration of various resources. They plan to buy the construction materials locally. Funding for the project would come from multiple sources: 25% from local government, 25% from the parish, 25% from the individual family, and 25% from our Lenten sacrifices. By providing these toilets, we will be empowering the people of Fr Gene’s parish to better their own lives, to improve their health and especially to provide dignity and safety to the girls and women of the villages. Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, “fast food,” ice cream, cookies. Each week, calculate how much money you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Work of Mercy cans at the exits. Pray! Pray for Fr Gene, pray for the people of his parish, and pray that our own hearts will be transformed through our sacrifices.

Fr. Gene at a program for the youth of his parish.
